@lastdaysofwar, Day 11: Heroes (Illia Geiszler, Jacob Geiszler, Newt Geiszler/Hermann Gottlieb)
When it’s all over, Newt comes home.
The Geiszlers spend all weekend tidying up the house for him, not that Newt would notice if a tornado had hit the place. Jacob and Illia were forever getting after him to hang up his jackets and put away his toys when he was young, but all their efforts came to nothing. Not one of the Geiszler men has ever been what anyone would call “neat,” and Newt least of all. But he’s bringing home a friend, and for Dr. Gottlieb’s sale, they figure they should make an effort.
“We should have gone and picked them up,” Jacob says, fretting over the alignment of the books on the shelf for lack of anything better to do.
“They wanted to drive from the airport,” Illia reminds him.
“Yes, they said that, but we still should have…”
“The boys wanted some time alone.” Jacob knows damn well Newt’s been in love with his lab partner for years, even if Newt himself wouldn’t admit it. And now that Hermann has finally seen his finer points, of course they want to spend time together. They don’t want a couple of boring old guys ruining the mood.
“I still think—” Jacob breaks off at the sound of a car in the drive. Too late to worry about it now. The boys are home.
The brothers head outside just in time to see Newt and his partner coming up the walk. Newt grins and waves when he sees them. Meanwhile, Hermann looks like he’s being escorted to the electric chair. He lags behind until Newt throws an arm around his shoulders and hustles him forward.
“Kids! You made it!” Jacob makes his way down the front steps while Illia just goes ahead and jumps them like he’s still in his twenties. Jacob keeps telling him he’s going to break an ankle doing that, but today he can’t be bothered to fuss.
Jacob throws his arms around his boy, who staggers and loses his grip on his fellow scientist.
“Dad! Hey!” Newt returns his father’s hug with equal fervor. Hermann, looking bewildered, inches away from them until Illia catches him up in an embrace of his own.
“Hermann Gottlieb, so good to finally see your face!”
“Ah—er—yes—h-hello, Mr.—”
“Uncle, to a friend of Newt’s,” he corrects.
“Hey, don’t,” Newt says from over his father’s shoulder. “Hermann’s not a hugger.”
Yeah, Illia could tell that without asking. The man’s as skinny as a scarecrow and twice as stiff, enduring Illia’s arms around him without making any attempt to return the hug. Doesn’t matter. Illia gives him one last squeeze and lets him go.
“Come give your favorite nephew a hug instead,” Newt says, reaching one arm past Jacob, who’s still hanging onto him.
“You’re my only nephew, Newt. Unless you plan to bring me one by marriage.”
Newt’s face goes scarlet, and Hermann’s goes white. Interesting.
“Come on, let’s take this party inside,” Jacob says. He leads Newt into the house without ever letting him go, leaving Illia and Hermann to follow in their wake.
“You need us to bring your bags in?” Illia asks the young man.
“Oh, no, please don’t trouble yourself.” Hermann’s voice is much more tentative than Illia would have expected from all the yelling he’s heard in the background of Newt’s calls, and there’s a defensiveness to his rigid posture that Illia doesn’t like at all. He smiles, hoping to put the boy at ease.
“We’re very happy to have you here,” Illia says.
Hermann looks uncertainly to Newt, and his eyes widen in panic when he realizes Jacob is already drawing the kid into the kitchen for a private talk, leaving Hermann on his own.
“Hermann,” Illia says.
“Sir!” He snaps to attention like a soldier in the presence of his commanding officer. It would almost be ridiculous, if he didn’t look like he was expecting to be shot for insubordination.
“You’ve had a long flight. If you want to take a minute to rest, Newt’s room is down the hall, last door on the left. All right?”
“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.”
“That’s Uncle Illia!” he calls after him as Hermann makes a hasty retreat.
He could almost laugh. Who would ever guess that this nervous young man in the too-big sweater is one of the heroes who’s just saved the world?
*
“Where’s Hermann?” Newt asks when he reenters the living room and finds Illia sitting alone. Illia doesn’t look up from his paper.
“Hiding in your room.” He can hear the remnants of tears in his nephew’s voice, but he wouldn’t dream of stepping on the father and son’s emotional reunion. They deserve to cry in each other’s arms if they want.
“Aw, what did you do to him?” Newt groans.
“Nothing. Kid thinks we’re going to eat him.” He doesn’t point out that Newt should have seen for himself that his partner is in a strange place and clearly scared to death of putting a toe out of line. Those two can figure things out for themselves.
After Newt runs off to tend to his boyfriend, Jacob comes in and settles on the couch. Illia still doesn’t put down his paper.
“How’s Newt?” he asks.
“My baby boy is all grown up and saving the planet!”
“Ja.” He turns the page. “So, dinner’s going to be late?”
“What do you mean? Why?”
“The kids have something to work through.”
“What, you think they’re still ‘just friends?’ Newt must have told that boy how he feels by now,” Jacob scoffs. Illia shrugs.
“I wouldn’t know about that.” What he does know is that Hermann’s guard is up as high as it will go, and it’s about them, not Newt. The boy trusts Newt absolutely. He turns after him like a flower to the sun. So really, it’s up to Newt to decide what to do with that.
*
The kids come back out together before too long, both of them more collected than before.
“What can we do to help with dinner?” Newt asks.
“You could set the table.”
“Okay. C’mon, Herms.”
“What, you bring a guest into this house and then you put him to work?” says Illia.
“I don’t mind,” Hermann says quickly.
“Don’t you let our Newt bully you into doing his chores, son.”
“Oh, like I could bully this guy,” Newt snaps before Hermann has a chance to answer. He slings an arm around Hermann again, and the two of them disappear into the next room, whispering together as they go.
Illia and Jacob give them a few minutes before they follow.
They make a good start on dinner, both of the old fellas grilling Newt on the details of Operation Pitfall as they eat. Illia makes sure to leave Hermann alone at first, but he’s pleased to see that, before too long, the boy is volunteering a few comments of his own—mostly to do with Newt being a reckless idiot.
Newt absorbs the insults like they’re nothing, and turns a melting smile on his partner.
“This dickbag saved my ass,” he says. “I’d have been lost without him.”
Hermann’s mouth snaps shut, and his cheeks go pink.
“Then we owe you our thanks twice over,” Jacob says. “You saved the world, and you saved our boy.”
The pink spreads all the way to Hermann’s ears. He reaches for Newt’s hand under the table.
“Daaaaaaaad, I’m thirty-five,” Newt whines. The old folks ignore him.
“So, Hermann, what’s next for you?” Jacob asks. “I suppose you’ll be bringing Newt home to meet your own family when you leave here?”
“Oh, no!” Hermann says, and then falls silent, looking to Newt again with a flash of emotion that’s quickly suppressed.
“I’ve already met Hermann’s dad.” Newt’s voice is hard, colder than Illia has ever heard it before. Illia can only imagine what old Dr. Gottlieb must have done to make his friendly little Newt react that way, but a few details about Hermann’s demeanor click into place. So “home” and “family” don’t mean the same thing to him that they do to Newt.
“What about work?” Illia smoothly redirects. “Do you two have jobs lined up already?”
“We were planning to stay with the PPDC for the moment,” Hermann says. “Newton is shifting his focus to cleanup and conservation. His work is going to make the coastlines habitable again, someday soon.”
“And Herms is still studying the breach,” Newt puts in. “Even though it’s closed, there’s still a lot to be learned from it.”
“That’s great, kids. Keep looking to the future. Between the two of you, you’ll save the world again.” Illia raises his glass in a toast. The others clink against him.
They finish dinner, and Illia brings out the apple strudel. The boys both dig into it until they swear they can’t eat another bite, and, even better, Hermann gives him a genuine smile and says it’s the best he’s ever tasted. Illia’s happy enough with the compliment to his baking, but that smile is the real victory here.
Illia stays to clean up the kitchen while everyone else wanders off to bed. The kids have had a long day of travel, and Jacob is feeling his age these days and never stays up much past 8:00. Illia’s used to staying up on his own, making fun of his little brother for being such an old man.
Somehow, he’s not too surprised when Little Night Owl Newt comes sneaking back into the kitchen in his boxers and a t-shirt, just as Illia finishes up the last of the dishes.
“Great timing as usual, kiddo,” Illia says.
“Aw, shut it, gramps,” Newt says, and gives him the hug they skipped over before.
“What’s this about?” Illia asks, as Newt clings to him like he did when he was a little kid and he felt like the whole world was out to get him.
“I missed you,” Newt says.
“I missed you, too. And I’m proud of you. I hope you know that.” Somehow, his words only make Newt cling tighter. “Hey. Kiddo. What’s the matter?”
“Nothing. I’m just really happy to be home.” He lets go of Illia and straightens up. The poor kid looks miserable. “Thanks for letting us come visit. And thanks for being nice to Hermann. He, uh…he doesn’t get a lot of that.”
Yeah, he guessed that much. But he doesn’t ask for any details.
“You’re our family, Newt, and this is your home. It always will be. And that means it’s his home, too, whenever either of you needs it.”
“Really?” Newt whispers.
“What else do you think family is? If that boy belongs to you, we’ll make sure we always have room for you both.”
“Man, you are the coolest,” says Newt. “I never really thought about it before I drifted with Hermann, but like…I’m really lucky I have such a great family to come home to. And, um.” He points finger guns Illia’s way. “You’re kinda like my hero.”
“Who, me? I’m just your boring old uncle.”
“No, really! I always wanted to be just like you when I grew up. And, like, I still do. ‘Cause you and Dad, you’re good people. And that’s not an easy thing to be.”
Oh, Newt. Illia smiles down at his nephew—his little boy, all grown up. Newt has spent his whole life worried about being the smartest person in the room, but he hasn’t even noticed that he’s good, too, right down to the core. As good as, or better than, anyone Illia has ever known.
Illia and Jacob aren’t the heroes in this family. All they did was raise a good kid. But hey, if they’re going to be the ones these boys—both of them—can come home to? That’s really something.

winter break
Hermann has never met Newton’s family. But after a falling out with his own father and a month’s holiday looming on the horizon, that’s about to change.
Tackled yet another prompt while my students were doing their free writing. Not sure why I chose the holiday season when it’s nearly the middle of May, but here we are~ Possibly from the same universe as Nelson’s Lake. 1.331 words.
"I’m just saying- You haven't met my family." Hermann feels his expression quirk into that familiar doubt that Newton seems to so easily trigger, activated this time by the truly ominous tone said biologist had chosen to employ. Prone to theatrics, a perfect countermeasure to Hermann's ceaseless criticisms. "Newton, I'm certain that your father and uncle are perfectly decent people." After all, nothing could be worse than- Well. He didn't warrant any more of Hermann's time. Newton's eyes had turned to study Hermann's, peripherals still keeping firmly to the road beyond the spider-webbed fractures of the windshield. "See, you say that now, but you don't know them like I do, Herms. They're-" Newton's focus turns fully back to the road, right hand lifting in a vague gesture that, in Geiszlerian Interpretation, roughly translates to: It's a complicated matter, and I'm not going to waste time trying to explain every minute detail proving exactly why it's complicated. Hermann's unsure when exactly he became fluent.
Unwilling to continue with this particular tirade, and most definitely wanting to avoid a discourse that would eventually leave them both frustrated, he offers his own form of a truce. "Every family is complicated. But for you to care for them this much, I'm certain they're good people."
Newton doesn't react at first, but then comes a jerking smile, a quick glance towards the passenger seat, and Hermann knows the compliment- I trust your judgement.- was picked up after all. For a few moments, the conversation wanes, the only sounds coming from the balding tires on neglected tar-patched asphalt, the slight squeak of the serpentine belt, and the nearly silent hum of a J-Rock CD Mako had gifted Newton five years ago. It's... surprisingly peaceful. In another life, in another time, another place- Hermann would have flinched away from the very idea. Joining his best friend- and God help him if Newton ever heard him admit it- for holiday instead of returning home, neglecting his familial obligations? Inconceivable. Inexcusable. Batshit insane, as Newton would say. But after the recent fallout with Lars, Hermann had absolutely no desire to return home for the winter holiday. Frankly, he had no desire to ever return to that place. And then Newton- wild, spontaneous, caring Newton- had not-so-casually mentioned a spare bedroom, an offer that Hermann hadn't thought twice about accepting. Clearly, the other was rubbing off on him. For their part, both Jacob and Illia were allegedly delighted to have Newton's part-time colleague, full-time flatmate joining them, leaving Newton to run reconnaissance back-and-forth between his family and his- frankly, bemused- friend about allergies, traditions, and- worryingly; Hermann recalled several truly alarming Hanukkah jumpers hidden deep in the photos of Newton's Facebook- favorite colors. Several times, he had nearly reconsidered, awash with a familiar anxiousness which followed him whenever meeting new people, particularly those of some level of authority. But thoughts of his father filled him with a nauseating sense of ill-will, and he knew that, should he submit to Bastian's pleading emails and Karla's angered texts, a small war would be fought on the home front. No, for everyone's sake, it was best to avoid darkening Lars' doorway this season. It's begun flurrying. Newton curses under his breath as he starts the wipers, lips twisting into something resembling displeasure as he switches on the headlights. Hermann feels a small smile. He misses the snow, remembers when, not so long ago, drifts left from late November would cling to the landscape through mid-February, each winter bringing him a whole new world to explore, to study, to catalogue, to master in that way in which only children can. These days, winter was warm, a small blessing as his muscles despised the cold weather. But a small, whimsical part of him still misses the snow- its crisp, polished gleam as sunlight dances above and below, the world frozen in a space beyond Time, beyond beauty. "Ya know, when I was a kid, I used to stand out on our back porch every time we got snow. I'd spend forever just staring up at the sky, pretending I was flyin' through the Milky Way. Onkel Illia used to get so mad at me for it cause I'd get sick every frickin' time." Hermann smiles fully at the image. "I'm sure you were a terror." Newton snickers, not denying the accusation. "What do ya mean 'were?' Still am, dude." Hermann feigns a put-upon sigh. "A fact I am intimately familiar with, alas." "'Alas,' he says, like he fell out of some 19th century novel." Hermann gives his driver a mildly irritated scowl. "Must we rehash such a ridiculous argument, Geiszler?" Newton smirks, eyes practically sparkling in mischievous intent. Hermann finds himself rolling his own, exasperation not so exaggerated at this juncture. "Please, whatever it is you are thinking of, do not. The last impression I want to make is-" Newton's expression falls into something less menacing, almost... sincere. "Dude, you don't have to worry, alright? I promise Dad and Illia already love you. There's literally nothing you could do to change that." Hermann frowns, nearly scoffs in disbelief. "Be sensible, Newton. You can't love someone you've not even spoken to." Newton offers one of his half-shrugs- a gesture that mimics a consideration for Hermann's words, but one that indicates that Newton is fully confident in his own stance and isn't truly absorbing what the other is trying to say. "Like I said earlier, Herms: you haven't met my family." That- That is reasonable. Newton is, after all, drawing his conclusions from nearly 30 years worth of data, and Hermann- He cuts those thoughts off immediately, determined to find familiar footing. "And not even 10 moments ago, you were lamenting how overwhelming they can be." Newton shoots him a grin. "What can I say, Herms? I contain multitudes." The remainder of the car ride is relatively quiet, Hermann and Newton both taking turns to point out the various houses with holiday themed decor- some beyond garish, others beyond excessive, and in the case of one pink house with an astonishing amount of plastic flamingos out front, both. Americans, Hermann thinks to himself, distracted by the way Newton's begun tapping out a frantic rhythm against the steering wheel, buzzing with excited energy. For Newton, this is a homecoming. There may come squabbling and disagreements over snack foods and bickering over who used the last of the hot water, but it would be from a place of unconditional love, foundations only strengthened as the years progressed, the bond only growing fonder. And now, pulling into the drive of a mostly nondescript house- apart from the nearly four-meters-tall Godzilla replica bedazzled in holiday lights and a Santa hat- Hermann finds himself almost envious. An envy that is soon forgotten- lost, abandoned- somewhere between Jacob's engulfing hugs and Illia's quiet asides and Newton's endless ribbing. He's surprised at how easily he is pulled into the fold, barely has a moment to wonder at how fluidly he is woven into conversation. Hours, and one long dinner, later, and Illia has dragged him into a particularly heated debate about their favorite Fußball clubs, a debate which has earned the mockery of both other Geiszlers, a not-so-polite gesture from a slightly tipsy Hermann directed to a certain other (now allegedly affronted) professor, a warm laugh from his host, and a bright grin from his debate partner. Soon after, Illia is rising, kitchen-bound in the perilous quest for more drinks. Hermann takes the lull as an opportunity to check his phone. He's missed several texts from each of his siblings, multiple calls from his father, and there is a blinking red light not-so-kindly informing him that he has several voicemails waiting to be heard. For a moment, he nearly submits to his sense of duty, but it's aborted immediately. In a frankly Geiszler-esque gesture, Hermann tosses his phone away to the furthest recesses of the sectional and starts in on another snickerdoodle. Lars' lecture can wait til morning.
Thanks for reading!

Lo and behold! i’ve finally finished making it, the promised list of Pacific Rim fic recs for anon :-) everyone thank @ihavenomoralsss for proofreading this for me!
There’s a good chance most people who've read any amount of newmann fanfiction will have read the first two on this list, as they’re found on the first and fifth pages of the newmann ship tag on ao3 when its sorted by most kudos descending– however i’ve included them anyway because they’re there for a very good reason (which is that they’re FANTASTIC). also, i've grouped all of the "pov outsider" fics together at the end of this post, as they pretty much make up one third of the list– which feels like it warrants it's own section. feel free to dm me or send me an ask to let me know of your thoughts about any of these (or just pacific rim in general!!)! without further ado, may i present to thou, 10 fantastic newmann fics
It’s All in the Hands of a Lazy Projector by patster223
“Hermann is cursed as a child so that he may never remember anyone he meets. Theoretically, this should make falling in love impossible, but then he meets (and meets and meets and meets) Newton Geiszler.”
~10k words, 1 chapter, rated T; exactly what the summary says, it’s an au in which hermann is cursed to forget everyone he meets, it centers around newt and hermanns interactions and how they manage to grow close despite this
if i had to choose a single favorite pacific rim fanfic it’d probably have to be this one. it’s gorgeously written and tackles some themes that hit very close to home for me, personally. i’ve struggled with memory loss for a very long time now, and this fic manages to encapsulate that experience through the lens of magical-realism in a way i’ve never seen captured in any context. i left a comment to that effect (under a pseudonym because i rarely log into ao3 on my phone) and the author’s response is something that still makes me emotional pretty much every time i look at it, “I wanted to imagine a world where memory still mattered, even if it wasn’t remembered. And now, years later, I think that it does. You and I and Hermann hold memory in our bodies and our minds, even if what’s being held isn’t an exact picture or description, but rather an emotion or a question. Memory still has to matter to those with memory loss, even if we end up experiencing it differently.” so, this is not only a recommendation for quality, but also from a very personal place— it’s a fic that addresses the concept of memory loss through a lens of comfort and hope, which it is so rarely seen through, and does it phenomenally. if anyone looking at this post were to read one fic and only one fic from this list i’d want it to be this one. it also characterizes newt and hermann very well and i love their dynamic in it, it’s PHENOMENAL
Letters From Berlin by spenshi
“Newton keeps in touch with his family when he's shipped off to the Shatterdome. Jacob and Illia send care packages to the K-Science Lab.”
~12k words, 1 chapter, rated T; once more, exactly what the summary says– newt sends letters to his family and they send him packages. eventually hermann starts sending them letters (+ emails) as well :]
i read this one most recently out of all the others so it’s the freshest in my memory :-) it’s extremely homely and heartwarming!! additionally, it includes some really fun and sweet interactions between newt’s family and hermann. OH! and, of course, some very fun characterization of newt’s family
Plausible Possibility by cissues / @cacaesthesia
“Newt and Hermann experience some odd post-drift effects.”
~1k words, 1 chapter, rated G; a little exploration of ghost-drift
short and sweet! absolutely fucking adorable too. plus, this contains some headcanons/a discussion of sexuality that i was delighted to find very relatable (as an aromantic person)
Red Patent by highseize
“It's been months since the ocean closed up. Nothing will take this from her now.”
~2k words, 1 chapter, rated G; a snapshot of what mako’s life looks like after the events of the movie ^^
a rare non-hermann-and-newt-centered fic on this list!! this one actually centers around mako :D it’s adorable and i love mako with my entire heart, especially this depiction of her
fool by kaijusalad
“Newton is going to die thinking no-one left on this Earth loves him. (Fool.) He can't have that.”
~6k words, 1 chapter, rated T; hermann believes that seeking out hannibal chau and drifting with a kaiju brain once more will kill newt, and acts accordingly
i LOVE the way this fic is formatted and written– the word choice and unique use of italics and parentheses is incredible and works so well. it describes every action and scene so gorgeously and it just. man. here’s a small except devoid of context that i think showcases this perfectly: “His words are hollow, anyway. They hang in the air, lies filled with helium, a new year's resolution, an 'I'll quit smoking'. (God is real in belief; maybe if he believes in them hard enough they'll come true, and isn't that something for a man who works in numbers to think?)”
One day from lonely by Raehimura
“Hermann is standing outside Newton Geiszler’s private quarters, bony ankles poking out from under too-short standard-issue sweatpants, his hair a wreck and his red-ringed eye still sore, with a lifetime of stolen memories in his head. What if Newt isn’t there? What if he’s sleeping? Or, worse, what if he is waiting on the other side of the door with his own stolen memories fresh on his mind? Above all he remembers, sudden and frighteningly clear: This is not what they do.”
~2.5k words, 1 chapter, rated G; another very interesting exploration of newt and hermann post-drift
i disagree a little bit with some of the characterization in this fic (particular, newt thinking hermann hates him. i think newt very well knows that hermann’s very fond of him) but it’s a great read nonetheless! the best word to describe it would probably be “cozy”
This is a Totally Normal Thing for Friends to Do by SolarMorrigan / @solarmorrigan
“Hermann and Newt don't talk about it (until they do)”
~21k words, 4 chapters, rated T; a fake dating au in which hermann’s dad nags him about not having found a partner yet and hermann panics, telling him that he actually does have a partner just to get him to asking about it, but it backfires when lars expresses interest in meeting him. newt offers to play the part of partner, hijinks and relationship progression ensue. this fic also has an explicit sequel, if that’s your kind of thing
THIS FIC IS SO FUCKING GOOD. there were multiple times where i reacted out loud to things that happened in the fic– most notably a series of “holy fucking shit”s while eating lunch with some friends. it’s adorable and includes some transmasc newt content :3 this fic also includes hermann snapping and standing up to his shithead dad and its GREAT. one of my absolute favorite pacrim fics ever, i can’t recommend it enough
POV OUTSIDER FICS:
HR Complaints by IDoNotBitMyThumbAtYou / @idonotbitemythumbatyou
“Manny Flores has been with the PPDC for nearly a decade by the time he’s transferred to Hong Kong. He just wants to do his job. And he’s good at it. But when he receives the 15th complaint from one Dr. Hermann Gottlieb in only three days, he finds his patience running thin. He wonders which of the two scientists would be more of a nightmare to cohabitate a working space with: Dr. Gottlieb - sender of endless petty complaints, or Dr. Geiszler, their hapless subject. (...)”
~3k words, 1 chapter, unrated (probably G or T); hermann and newt’s relationship through the eyes of someone reading the (non-serious) complaints that hermann sends to hr
i spent three uninterrupted hours looking for this fic to link it here and it was ABSOLUTELY worth it. this fic is so fun, and it uses my favorite trope of all time!! i’m an absolute sucker for “pov outsider” type fics <3 the characterization is phenomenal, i love the oc from whose pov we view the story, and some of the lines made me actually audibly laugh. definitely another one of my absolute favorites. i think i sent a screenshot of the first sentence from the following lines to virtually everyone i know: “After another few weeks of complaints (“Dr. Geiszler asked me if I have any tattoos.” “Dr. Geiszler made an offensive tweet alluding to my personal style. I have attached a link.” “Dr. Geiszler has named his invention ‘the milking machine.’”) And continued insistence that no disciplinary action be taken, Manny was starting to suspect that the latter was closer to the truth: these were the missives of someone deeply, inconveniently in love. Christ, Manny was half in love with the guy himself at this point.” this fic rocks, do yourself a solid and please read it
On The Outside by combeferrer
“Petra Gottlieb, Hermann's mother, watches the first PPDC press conference after the world is saved and notices her son, particularly his relationship with his fellow scientist.”
~1k words, 1 chapter, rated G; for the third and final time, exactly what the description says! newt and hermanns relationship through the eyes of hermann’s mother, who watches a press conference with her son– who she hasn’t really interacted with lately– in it
ANOTHER GREAT FIC!! I love this characterization of newt and hermann’s relationship, and i find the premise and extremely enticing in and of itself so i won’t be saying anything more here <3
Disconnect, Connect Again by cypress_tree / @cypress-tree
“Raising Newt Geiszler has never been easy. Seeing him fall in love can be harder. The development of Newt and Hermann's relationship, from Jacob Geiszler's point-of-view.”
~13.5k words, 4 chapters, rated T; newt and hermann’s relationship through the eyes of newt’s father, over the course of 12 years
LOVE LOVE LOVE this author’s take on newt’s family. it works so well and is very enjoyable to read about. i wish i could articulate how much and why exactly i love this fic in a better manner, but i can’t quite find the right word’s ^^; i’m just going to leave it at “i love it dearly and i adore it’s depiction/interpretation of newt and hermann’s history (and present + future!)”
thank you for reading!! have a lovely day/night ^^ <3
#benny beeps#fic recs#pacific rim#pacrim#newt geiszler#hermann gottlieb#newmann#newton geiszler#kaiju bros#this is my first time making a post like this so PLEASE let me know if the way i've formatted this has rendered it unreadable

quick little notes about newt since i don't have a detailed bio up yet :
newt was born in berlin & lived there until he was about 15 years old.
newt was the product of an affair. his mother , monica schwartz , is an opera singer & his father , jacob geiszler was a piano tuner. both were married to other people when they met. jacob tried to do the right thing & leave his marriage to marry monica when they discovered she was pregnant , but monica rejected him.
monica basically left newt in the hands of his dad & his uncle illia to focus on her opera career. jacob was distant when raising newt due to his broken heart over monica. thankfully , illia doted over newt & even encouraged his growing love of music & science.
newt went to MIT at the age of 15 & earned six doctorates. he even began teaching at the university at a young age while pursuing the extra degrees.
newt formed a punk band with a few friends called the black velvet rabbits during his time at MIT. he was the keyboardist & back up vocals. the band was not great , but it had a small cult following & they performed at a lot of campuses.
he joined the pan pacific defense corps when he was 25. black velvet rabbits broke up when he left.
newt & hermann had met via online chats & had been in contact for years. they only met two years after newt had joined the ppdc. their first meeting was not great & they agreed not to talk to each other ever again. unfortunately for them , they would be forced to work with each other in the future.
newt loves all things kaiju & nerdy , especially anime & godzilla films. he's also a huge tattoo lover & his arms , torso & back are covered in kaiju tattoos. he's working on getting his legs fully tatted too.
he's pansexual & has had quite the extensive dating past despite claiming to be horrible with relationships.
post the first film , newt suffers an intense amount of stress , anxiety & PTSD. it takes him a few years before he's back to something close to his normal self again.
#˗ˏˋ ᶠᶤᵍ ᶤᶤ· ﹙ headcanon ﹚ ﹕ behind the awesome.#morning have some lil newt facts#a few of you have#known me & know newt already but there's a lot of new peeps#so here's the basics of this nerd#also pls watch pac rim if u havent yet#nECESSARY VIEWING TRUST ME ITS WORTH IT!!!

six sentence Sunday...uh like three weeks late and on Monday
So I was tagged by @the-starryknight @tackytigerfic and @maesterchill super long ago and I'm FINALLY writing something just for me! It's, heh, Pacific Rim fandom- endgame Newmann, because of course it is, I only write Drarry for fests because I need the motivation of a deadline to writing something like days before it's due.
So, this is loosely five times Newt changes his hair and one time he doesn't
An hour later Newt was in a chair watching as huge chunks of hair fell to the ground. With every snick of the shears, Newt felt different. And look, Newt had seen the 90s rom-coms with the makeover montages. He knew this was supposed to help. This was part of growing up, according to popular media. He too, could look like Ryan Gosling with his classic crew cut.
This is right before he starts MIT when he's like 13 (I have a lot of feelings on him going to uni younger than that because spouse went to uni too young and I won't let Jacob Geiszler fuck up his kid like spouse was so I'm making up my own timeline as far as his age) But either way, he's a baby. And he hasn't really experimented with his hair, so he doesn't know to not make a big decision when he's anxious.
I just have a lot of feelings about Newt and hair, so what better than to write a fic about both? lolsob
If you want to do this (and you have something you can share) I'm tagging @static-abyss @cibeewastaken @p1013 @ladderofyears@iero0 @thusspoketrish and literally anyone who wants to do this. Please consider this an open tag and tag me (no matter the fandom!) so I can read it!!!!

Can't stop thinking about Hermann meeting Newt's dad for the first time and his brain immediately short-circuits because jesus christ jacob geiszler is the hottest man he's ever seen. And Newt is going to look just like that and oh dear he has to sit down for a moment
