Hopper saves a boyâs pieces, Joyce puts him back together
TW: abuse
Hopper had been having a nice night with his daughter, the two of them had settled onto the couch to watch movies and eat ice cream. Everything was great.
Then his radio went off.
âChief? Chief itâs an emergency! Pick upâ The crackling voice of his deputy called out, breaking the peaceful atmosphere.
Hop barely blinked before Elâs used her powers to send the radio into his hands, all without looking away from the tv.
âWhat wrong?â Hopper asked as he got up and began to pull on his uniform, gesturing for El to call Joyce with his free hand as he listened to his deputy.
âMrs Rayson just called the station in a panic, apparently the foster kid went nuts and attacked her husband with a tire ironâ Hopper frowned as he listened, pulling on his boots and doing up his laces. He waved goodbye to El as he made his way to the front door.
âAmbulance are on their way, but Chief youâre the closest and the kidâs still in the house. Mrs Rayson says sheâs worried for her familyâ Hopper was already pulling his hat and jacket on as he was halfway out the door, nodding his head as if his deputy could see him.
âIâm getting in car now. What else do we know?â Hop said as he pulled his seatbelt on.
âNothing much other than that, Mrs Raysonâs frantic and we canât get much more out of her, just a lot of crying and babbling. Thought it best to respond quicklyâ Hop nodded along as he turned his sirens on and headed towards the directions given to him.
In no time at all Hopper found himself pulling up to a fairly unassuming house, just barely in his jurisdiction. Hop got out and made his way towards the door, he took a deep breath before he knocked.
âItâs the Chief of police open upâ Hop called out, his fist banging against the door.
There was the sound of someone rushing around inside the house for a moment before the door swung open to reveal a distraught Mrs Rayson.
âOh thank goodness your here chief! I didnât know what to doâ The clearly frazzled woman lead him into the house, her hands ringing the fabric of her dress.
âMy Greg is just this way, his headâs bleeding an awful lot and heâs got a few bruises so we put him on the couch with a cool cloth and some iceâ Mrs Rayson said as she led him to the living room.
There, a very unhappy looking Greg Rayson sat on the couch, his head bleeding into a rag and bruise forming on his skin.
âDamn it Sheryl I told you not to call the police! Sorry to bother you Chief, you know how women are when they see blood, all panic and no senseâ Greg shook his head slightly, only to wince in pain as a bead of blood rolled down his brow.
âItâs no trouble, and from the looks of it itâs a little more than understandableâ Hop replied sceptically as he eyed the man on the couch.
âNow why donât you tell me what happened hereâ
âOh it was just terrible Chief! He went mad he did! Snapped at my Greg for no good reason, it was terrifying! Had to put the kids up in our room to keep them safeâ Sheryl shook her head as she held her distraught face in her hands.
âSheryl enough!â Greg scolded, his wife paid no heed to his words.
âDonât you start now. You see we thought weâd do the boy some good, take him out of those cities and into a nice town like Hawkins. Heâs been in trouble with the law before you see, we thought heâd just need a firm guiding hand but that boyâs beyond help! He just wonât listen! My Greg was just trying to help and he lost his mind! Thatâs what we get for trying to help delinquentsâ Sheryl sniffled sadly. Hopper could only nod his head in sympathy.
âYou said he attacked you with a tire iron?â Hop asked as he turned to Greg.
âHa, barely, just caught me off guard is all, nicked my head. You know how those head wounds are, bleed like a stuffed pigâ Greg shrugged dismissively.
âOf course. Whereâd he get the tire iron?â Hop asked, Greg only groaned in pain as a response. Sheryl immediately rushed to her husbandâs side and checked him over for what was likely the hundredth time.
Hop could hear his men arriving out side when he decided to move this along. He hoped to get home in time to at least catch the end of a movie with his daughter.
âWhereâs the boy now? I need to have a word with himâ Hop asked as he gazed quickly around the room, sticking his head out the door and into the kitchen to check it he was there. The couple were quiet for a moment.
âIs that really necessary right now?â Sheryl asked nervously, her eyes flickering to her husband who was becoming less lucid by the minute.
âYes maâamâ Hopper frowned slightly, Sheryl looked hesitant before she began to lead him out the room.
He followed her to the door of what was very likely the basement and raised a questioning eyebrow at her.
âYou see Greg fought him off, to keep him restrained, a-away from the children! This, well this seemed like the best place to put him. I hope you donât think any less of us Chief, we had to, did know who heâd go for next!â Sheryl explained nervously, her eyes constantly darting back to the living room where her husband was out of sight.
âThatâs fine. Whatâs the boyâs name?â Hopper frowned slightly.
âHuh, oh itâs Jackâ she replied as he opened the door, Sheryl quickly excused herself as he made his way down the stairs into the basement.
The room was dark, it smelled slightly of damp as he fumbled around for the light. When he found it the flickering bulb didnât do the room any favours.
At first glance the room wasnât very big and wasnât very different from what he expected. There was a door in the corner which likely led to more storage, shelves of random crap and half forgotten projects littered the walls, a work bench was pushed against the stairs and a washer and dryer was shoved into the corner.
Hop couldnât see the kid anywhere.
After walking behind a few boxes and shelves, even going as far as checking behind the dryer Hopper found neither hide nor hair of anyone.
Finally Hopper directed his attention to the door heâd initially dismissed as a storage closet, he couldnât help the frown that formed on his face at the sight of it. Bolted into the hard wood was three different locks, strange to have them on the outside but maybe the Rayson children were young and had a nasty habit of getting into things. Maybe it was nothing to worry about. Hopper pushed the thoughts to the back of his mind for later examination as he pushed forward and opened the door.
It was not nothing to worry about.
It was not a storage cupboard as he had thought, it was a room. A small room with concrete walls covered with peeling strips of paint. The only light coming from a small, cracked rectangular window close to the ceiling, letting in the faint blue light of the winter moon. There was empty food packets littering the ground and a half drunk water bottle discarded off to the side. An old mattress on the floor, pushed into the far corner with a pile of old blankets covering it.
There was the kid.
He was huddled up in the corner, his legs pressed against his chest and his arms wrapped around his knees. The tire iron was sill clutched in his shaking hand. His head was pressed against his knees and any remaining skin on his face was covered by his dark blonde hair.
âHey kidâ Hop said softly as he crouched down to his knees, the kid flinched and look up at him; his eyes went wide as his grip on the tire iron tightened. He hadnât heard the door open.
âItâs okay. Iâm the Chief of police, Jim Hopper, youâre Jack?â Hop scanned the boyâs face slightly, his bottom lip was split in the corner and he had a bruise forming around his neck.
Jack nodded slowly.
âCan you tell me what happened?â Hop asked quietly, nudging closer into the room.
Jack huffed a laugh, though it lacked any joy as he looked away.
âLike you would careâ from what Hop could see the kid rolled his eyes.
âTry meâ Hop replied seriously. Jack remained quiet for a while.
âHe was angry at something, he grabbed me and I reactedâ Jack snapped.
âHe hurt you? Heâs hurt you before?â Hop frowned. Jack grimaced as he looked away.
âHe wonât hurt you againâ Hop promised firmly, his mind thinking back to Lonnie Byers and Doctor Brenner. Horrible men that heâd had the misfortune of meeting, men whoâd hurt people important to him. Hop tried his best not to picture his daughter, huddle in the corner of the room instead of the boy in front of him.
âSureâJack mumbled, entirely unbelieving. Hopperâs frown deepened .
âI promise, just give me the iron and we can walk out of hereâ Hopper promised as he held out his hand.
Jack looked at him uneasily, before he seemed to just give up entirely. Hope could work with that. Jack handed him the tire iron before Hopper pulled the kid to his feet, Jack stumbled slightly and Hopper braced his hand against the kidâs back to steady him only for Jack to grown in pain.
Hopper glanced at the kid in worry, his hand moved to the bottom of Jackâs dirty white shirt, giving the boy ample time to react or tell him to stop, he didnât. Hopper lifted the back of Jackâs shirt to see various bruises and welts littering the pale skin.
âShitâ Hopper cursed quietly as he let the shirt fall back down, Jack chuckled quietly to himself.
Hopper led the kid back up the stairs, past his coworkers and straight to the back of his car.
âYou wait here, Iâll be right backâ Hop said as he shut the door behind Jack. Hop could see the kidâs blue eyes watching him through the frosted car window as he marched back into the house.
Greg was getting checked over by two paramedics as Hop turned to his deputy.
âI want cuffs on him the minute he gets to the hospital, and bring Mrs Rayson in for questioningâ Hop stated angrily, everyone in the room stilled.
âUhh, what for Cheif?â Callahan asked as he glanced at Mr and Mrs Reyson.
âChild abuseâ The air was sucked out of the room, one of the paramedics hesitated before continuing to tend to Greg with a disgusted grimace.
âChild abuse? What child abuse?â Sheryl asked a little frantic, her eyes flickering around the different faces in the room.
âWe-we didnât abuse him. We just- we had- he wasâŚheâs a very troubled boy, he doesnât listen!â Sheryl pleaded softly.
Hopper simply glared.
âL-look, I donât know what he told you, b-but he lies a lot! All the time in fact! You learn to take what he says with more than a pinch of salt you knowâ Sheryl began muttering.
âAnd the room in the basement?â Hopper practically growled.
âHe gets violent! In-incredibly violent! Itâs just until he cools down! Just to keep the kids safe! You-you-you understand donât you!? Parents have to keep their kids safe!â Sheryl was almost frantic.
âAnd his back? That keep your kids safe?â Hopper almost growled.
âHe needs a fi-firm hand. Heâll end up in prison for good without oneâSheryl seemed to deflate into herself after that.
It took all Hopper had in him to just walk out the door, to leave the mess to his deputy and coworkers and just walk away.
Hopper took a deep breath as he sat in his car, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. His mind was rolling in fury as he tried to keep his temper down.
âI donât mind if it rains or freezesâ The mumbled lyrics of a song Hopper could just barely remember reached his ears.
âLong as Iâve got my plastic Jesusâ Jackâs voice was quiet and breathy as he mumbled the song, his head was pressed against the cool window and his fingers tracing lines into the fog.
Hopper watched quietly as the kid would breathe on his hands every so often to warm them up, heâd forgotten about the chill. Hop dug around in the glove compartment of his car before he found what he was looking for, black gloves, they may have been fingerless but they were better than nothing.
Hop tossed them towards the kid in the back seat without a word as he began to drive, Jack didnât say a word as he put them on and continued to mumble his song.
ââŚ..Colours pink.. and pleasant..â Jackâs became more slurred and mumbled as the rocking or the car put him to sleep. Hop smiled as he looked in the rear view mirror back at the kid, he tried his best to avoid bumps in the road after that.
When he got back to the station Hop sent the kid off with Linda to get photos taken of his injuries, while Hopper tried and failed not to argue with Jackâs social worker.
Apparently they had no place to put the kid for the next couple days, so that meant he was Hoppers problem until then.
Hopper groaned into his hands. Heâd just wanted to have a movie night with his daughter, this had not been part of the plan. The phone on his desk rang a little while later as he was sorting through the paperwork on his desk.
âJim? Is everything alright?â Joyceâs voice greeted him as he answered the phone.
âYeah. Itâs..itâs fineâ Hop sighed.
âWhat happened? Is everyone okay?â Joyce asked gently, Hop couldnât help the smile that pulled at his lips at her concern.
âJust had a visit with the Raysons, turns out the bastards were abusing the foster kidâ Hop sigh as the smile slipped off his face, he could hear Joyce cursing quietly on the other end.
âCalled the social worker, got no where to put him for the next couple of days. That means I gotta find someone to watch himâ Hop scrubbed his hand across his face.
ââŚJimâ Joyce said softly.
âJoyceâ Hop replied, already knowing where she was going with it.
âJimâ Hop could practically hear the motherly look on her face.
âI canât take him Joyce, I have to look after Janeâ Hop sighed.
âOkay Jimâ
âI canât just spring this on herâ
âOkay Jimâ
âI donât even know how sheâd react! We have to be careful about who we bring around, you know that!â
âOkay Jimâ
Hopper sighed to himself, he could feel Joyce basking in her victory across the phone.
âHe doesnât have anythingâ Hop barely got the words out before Joyce was interrupting him.
âJonathan will watch the kids, Iâll bring him something warm! Does he need Willâs size or Jonathanâs?â Joyce asked happily. Hopper thought about if for a minute, mentally measuring the kids before replying.
âHeâs bigger than Jonathanâ Hopper sighed.
âRight, Iâll bring him something comfy then, see you soon Jim!â Joyce quickly hung up before Hop could get another word in.
Hopper took a deep breath before Linda escorted Jack back into the room, gently placing a warm drink into his gloved hands.
âThere you go lovelyâ the older woman said kindly as she gently patted the boy on the shoulder, Jack smiled at her as Hopper thanked her before she left.
Jack eyed Hopper over the top of his mug as he took long, slow sips of the warm liquid.
âSo Jack, how old are you?â Hop asked as he made to write it down on his paperwork.
âDonât you have my file? It should say thatâ Jack raised an eyebrow at him.
âOr you could just tell me, seeing as your sat right in front of meâ Hopper raised his own brow in response.
âHmmmâ Jack only hummed in acknowledgment.
âHow about how long youâve been with the Rayson family?â Hopper moved on.
âIt should say that tooâ Jack smirked.
Hopper grumbled under his breath.
âHas this happened before?â
âYâknow it really is a neat file, answers all these little questions for you. Even has this nice lists of prior arrestsâ Jack sassed with a small grin as Hopper groaned again.
Thatâs how almost every question Hopper asked was answered, that or with a noncommittal hum. Hell, Hopper couldnât even get the kid to admit his full name!
It was like an angel had saved him when Joyce finally arrived, a shopping bag in hand and her coat wrapped up warm around her small frame.
âHi sweetie, are you okay?â Joyce asked softly as she immediately zeroed in on Jack, her motherly instincts taking over.
âThat looks like it hurtâ Joyce said gently as her fingers gently reached for his split lip, never quite touching his skin.
âBut donât you worry about that, weâll look after you nowâ Joyce smiled brightly at Jack, would wouldnât help a small confused smile of his own.
âWhere are my manners! Iâm Joyce Byers, pleasure to meet youâ Joyce slowly raised her hand to shake as she smiled softly at Jack.
âJackson Mercer maâam, people call me Jackâ Hopper couldnât help but roll his eyes fondly, of course Joyce would get the kid to talk.
âWell itâs nice to meet you Jackâ Joyce smiled, her eyes dimmed a little as the boy shivered in his long sleeve.
âYou must be freezing, here I got this for youâ Joyce grinned as she handed the kid her shopping bag.
âYou didnât have toâ Jack said hesitantly as he eyed that bag in his lap.
âOh donât worry, I got it for my son but it was too big for him! Silly me, but at least now it wonât go to waste!â Joyce chattered pleasantly as Jack seemed to relax at her words.
The minute the kid pulled out a black hoodie with faded spots and streaks of colour as its design, Hopper knew she had lied. Sheâd definitely bought it for Jack, how she had found somewhere open and gotten it so quickly Hopper didnât know.
Jack didnât waste time as he pulled the large warm fabric out of the discarded shopping back and wrapped himself in it.
âWell how is it? Not to big?â Joyce asked with a smile.
âItâs goodâ Jack had a small smile tinge his lips as he thanked her.
âLovely,so youâre coming home with us then, weâll get you nice and warm and comfortableâ Joyce gently held out her hand for Jack to take, the kid barely hesitated before Joyce pulled the much taller boy to his feet and led him out the room.
Hopper just sat there in amusement until Joyce popped her head back into the doorway.
âIâll drive Jack the long way back to the cabin, you get there quicker and tell Jonathan to take Jane and Will back to our place for a sleepover, donât want to overwhelm Jack anymore tonightâ Joyce said quickly, ducking her head out back out the door and leaving before Hopper could respond. Hopper only huffed fondly as he got up to comply.
Just under an hour later Hop found himself fondly watching Joyce from the doorway as she brushed as sleeping Jackâs hair out of his face. The kid had knocked out almost the minute Joyce had rapped the blanket around his shoulders on the couch.
Joyce gently undid the laces of Jackâs converse before pulling them off and tucking his feet back under the blanket, lightly patting his leg for good measure
âYouâll be okay, youâre safeâ she whispered softly, her thumb gently grazing the boys cheek.
âHeâll be fine now, right Jim?âJoyce asked softly, her eyes still warm and motherly.
âYeah Joyce, heâll be fineâ Jim reassured her softly with a smile.

Jack and Jane have dinner
(stranger things crossover. Donât need to have seen four brothers, can just read as an oc)
Idea: Jackâs been put into Hoppers care after some unpleasantness with his most recent foster family. This is the first time Jack and El have been left alone for dinner since his arrival and the two take the time to bond and get to know each other while hoppers away. TW: mentions of abuse.
âBon appetiteâ Jack said as he placed down the highly requested Eggo waffles and rolled up his sleeves . He had initially offered to make some more âdinner worthy foodsâ but alas, the kid wanted waffles and who was he to deny her?
âBon..Bon app-app-pep-?â Jane scrunched her nose at the unfamiliar words, she was sure she hadnât heard them before.
âBon appetite. Itâs Frenchâ Jack huffed in amusement as Jane nodded her head and speared her first waffle with a determined jab of her fork.
âFrenchâ Jane whispered under her breath as she began to chew. âYou know more French?â She asked slowly as she looked up to meet his eyes.
âNot reallyâ Jack shrugged, Jane merely nodded her head in acceptance.
âStill smart. For a boyâ Jane nodded to herself, as if what she had said was something recently explained to her.
âThat right?â Jack laughed softly as he brought a glass of water up to his lips, trying to hide his amusement.
âYes. Boys are dumb. Like Mikeâ Jane nodded her head determinedly as she shovelled more waffle into her mouth.
âWhoâs Mike?â Jack asked as he cut into more of his food.
âMy friend. I kissed him.â Jane said as she looked up at Jack, her eyes assessing him to gauge his response.
âWhenâd you do that?â Jack asked lightly, that seemed like the right answer as Jane relaxed back into her chair.
âAt the Snowballâ Jane grinned, though she tried to shrug it off as if it were nothing as she stabbed a particularly large section of waffle to shove into her mouth.
âWhatâs the Snowball?â Jack frowned slightly in confusion.
âItâs a dance. For school.â That drew another small, almost proud, smile to Janeâs lips. She liked being the one who knew things.
âNice, never been to a school danceâ Jack shrugged nonchalantly, heâd never stayed at a school long enough, or he always seemed to move somewhere new before he could attend. It never bothered him, in fact he hadnât really realised heâd never been until he said it.
âNever ever?â Jane looked up in shock.
âNever ever. Whatâs it like?â Jake smiled at Janeâs surprise.
âIt had balloons. And music. I dancedâ Jane smiled fondly at the memory, she had really enjoyed herself that night.
âAnd you kissed Mike?â Jake smirked slightly.
âYesâ Jane grinned.
âEven though boys are dumb?â Jack chuckled lightly as he raised an eyebrow.
âYes. My first timeâ Jane grinned brightly up at him.
âSweetâ Jack nodded.
âSweetâ Jane nodded back.
âCan you dance?â Jane asked after a brief silence.
âYeah, and I can play guitarâ Jack grinned as Janeâs eyes widened.
âReally!?â Jane asked excitedly.
âYep, even played on stage once or twiceâ Jackâs grin widened slightly as Jane looked at him with awe.
âYou did!?â Jane leaned forward on the table, her eyes sparkling as her clothes narrowly avoided landing in her food.
âYepâ Jack grinned, popping the p as he leaned towards her.
âWhat else?â Jane asked excitedly as she moved her plate away, discarding it to the side to focus on the conversation.
âWhat else?â Jack smiled as he moved his own plate to the side.
âWhat else did you do?â Jane leaned in closer.
â I donât know, lots of thingsâ Jack grinned.
âDid you drink?â Jane asked, eyes laser focused on him.
âA tonâ Jack nodded.
âSmoke?â Janeâs nose wrinkled slightly, remembering the smell when sheâd encountered it.
âAll the timeâ
âSleep outside?â Jane squinted her eyes.
âA whole bunchâ Jack chose to only focus on the times heâd done so willingly.
âMe tooâ Jane grinned.
âYou did?â Jack leaned in closer, his own smile growing, she must mean camping. He hoped she meant camping.
âYesâ Jane declared proudly. âDid you fight people?â
âOh yeahâ Jack nodded as he grinned.
âThe bad men?â Jane whispered conspiratorially, leaning in so they were almost nose to nose.
âThe worstâ Jack smirked as he forced himself to keep his mind on their conversation, something made much easier by Janeâs victorious smile.
âMe too. I made one pee. I made them all go awayâ She beamed.
âThatâs badassâ Jack ginned at her, Jane nodded in agreement as her smile stretched wider across her face.
âHave you kissed too?â Jane asked slowly.
âYesâ Jack said confidently.
âWhen was the first time?â Jane asked innocently.
âA long time agoâ Jackâs confidence slipped ever so slightly as he answered more quietly. He discreetly wrapped his hand around his arm and dug the his nails into the skin, grounding himself in the conversation an away from the back of his mind. He hoped Jane wouldnât notice.
âWho have you kissed?â Jane squinted.
âLot of peopleâ Jack laughed slightly.
âGirls?â Jane smiled.
âYepâ Jack nodded easily.
âBoys?â Jane asked just the same, jack hesitated for a moment.
âYesâ Jack answered carefully, his eyes scanning the little girlâs face for any hint of disgust.
âI kissed a girl. My friend Max. For funâ Jane nodded happily.
âNiceâ Jack grinned as he reached his hand out for a high five, Jane complied enthusiastically.
Janeâs smile dimmed slightly as she looked down at Jackâs arm, the deep grooves where his fingernails had been were revealed when heâd high fived her, drawing her attention down towards his skin where a few old scars lay.
âKissed bad people?â Jane asked quietly.
Jack stilled for a moment. She had noticed then. He could just lie to her, it wouldnât be hard to do. Heâd lied to loads of different people for loads or different reasons over the course of his life, and she seemed to just believe anything.
But, for some reason he couldnât bring himself to lie to her. She was so honest and open with the way she smiled at him, he just couldnât do it.
So Jack nodded, trying his best to come off as nonchalant.
âBefore here?â Jane asked quietly.
âBefore hereâ Jack agreed.
âThey hurt you.â Jane said, more of a statement than a question as she gently put her little hand on his arm, her little finger just barely brushing the edge of an old cigarette burn he almost couldnât remember.
Jack leaned back in his chair slightly, he nodded his head only once, and quickly at that.
âMe too.â Jane whispered loudly, her hand tightening around his arm slightly without either of them noticing, as her eyes briefly glazed over.
Jack nodded sadly in understanding, his heart hurt for her.
âI ran away. Safe here, with Hopperâ Janeâs eyes grew slightly colder.
âSafe hereâ her eyes seemed to bore into his soul, her tone determined and unwavering. Jack only nodded.
âYou stay with me. I make bad men go away foreverâ Jane smiled, though her eyes remained heavy and determined.
âYouâre a little badass, you know that?â Jack smiled softly as he reached over ruffle her hair. Jane smiled sweetly up at him.
Jack glanced at their forgotten dinner plates, Jane did the same before their eyes joined, neither wanted the cold leftovers.
âWanna watch TV?â Jack asked his smile beginning to grow brighter.
âWith music?â Jane asked, her eyebrow raised.
âWhy not?â Jack leaned in closer.
âAnd ice creamâ Janeâs face was inches away from Jackâs as she smiled conspiratorially.
âOf courseâ Jack replied in kind.
The pair grinned at each other for a moment, before they quickly dashed away from the table.
Later that night, Hopper returned home to find Jack and Jane sprawled out on the couch, the TV playing one of Janeâs muppet CDs as some random song played behind them. Two empty ice cream pots decorated the table, an incriminating smudge of strawberry ice cream around Janeâs mouth as she drooled onto Jackâs shoulder; the older boyâs arm supporting her as she practically used him as a pillow.
Hop smiled as he gently pulled his daughter into his arms, causing both teens to groggily open their eyes.
âBed timeâ Hopper whispered as he placed Jane on her feet and pulled Jack up to stand.
Hopper had to repeatedly choke down his own laughter as the two teens stumbled around the cabin like mindless zombies, bumping into doors and leaning against walls as they readied themselves for bed.
After Hopper finally managed to get each child into their own bed and the lights off, he got himself ready. However, just as he lay down to go to sleep he heard a noise that snapped him into instant alertness until recognition registered in his mind.
The distinct sound of little Janeâs footsteps padded across the cabin before they came to a stop. Hopper listened quietly as two pairs of feet made the return journey to Janeâs room, dragging things across the floor behind them. Quiet voices whispered briefly as Hopper sighed to himself.
Hopper groaned tiredly to himself as he made his way to Janeâs room and opened the door, preparing himself to argue about bedtimes once again only to be stopped in his tracks.
Jack lay completely knocked out on the floor, the spare blanket beneath him acting as a mattress as he wrapped himself in his own, his hair splayed out across his pillow as he breathed deeply in his sleep.
Jane was lying in her bed on her side, facing him as her eyes blinked lazily with sleep before she turned to look at Hopper.
Hopper smiled to himself in amusement as he raised a questioning eyebrow at his daughter.
âSleepoverâ Jane blinked tiredly with a smile.
Hopper carefully crossed his daughterâs room, barely managing to avoid stepping on Jack as he sat on his daughterâs bed and stroked her hair softly. Janeâs tired smile greeted him as he looked at her.
âSafe here. With usâ Jane whispered as her words trialed off lazily. Hopper followed her eyes to a sleeping Jack before he nodded his head in agreement.
âYou both areâ Hopper whispered as he pressed a kiss to his daughterâs curls and tucked her blankets in around her.
Hopper turned off the light, just as he was closing the door he heard the tired, slurred whisper of his daughter.
âIâm a badassâ
Hopper smiled as he made his way back to his room, completely content as he drifted to sleep and reminded himself to call Joyce in the morning and inform her of the new development.

Billyâs old friend, Elâs new brother.
(Crossover, but itâs just Jack so you donât need to have seen four brothers)
Summary: Billy picks Max up from school and notices someone he hasnât seen in years, Jackâs taking hid new sister to invite her friend over when he sees a familiar face.
âShut upâ Billy groaned in annoyance as he slammed the car door shut behind him.
âItâs Friday, I want to hang out with my friends!â Max leaned towards him as she snapped.
âI. Donât. Care!â Billy practically yelled in response as he threw his head back against his chair. God why did he have to have such an annoying little sister. Did she think this was how he wanted to spend his Friday? Babysitting?
âWhy do you always have to be such an asshole!?â Max shouted, the party were going to hang out after school, probably go to the arcade and she really wanted to join them. Anything would be better than sitting at home with Billy.
âFuck shitbird, why do you always have to be-âŚâŚ.â Billyâs angry rant trailed off as he caught a glimpse of someone through the car window and stopped dead in his tracks.
âNo wayâ Billyâs voice was quiet as he practically mumbled. He quickly rolled down the car window and stuck his head out to get a better view.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â Max asked in exasperated confusion. Her eyes searched through the crowds of moving people, trying to figure out what had caught her brotherâs attention.
âNo fucking way!â Billy exclaimed as he quickly pulled his head back through the window and shoved open the door.
âBilly!? What the hell are you doing!? Where are you going!?â Max called after him in annoyance before shoving her own door open.
âDoes this mean I can go to the arcade?! Iâm going to the arcade!â Max called out after him, he didnât acknowledge her at all. Typical.
âHey! Simmons!â Billy called out as he made his way through the crowd, Maxâs eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she followed after him. No one had responded to his words.
âFuck. What was it? Smith? Steiner? Stevens? What the fuck was it?â Billy muttered to himself as he shoved peopled out the way.
âWhat are you talking about!?â Max yelled after him, only to be ignored again of course.
âFuck it.â Billy declared as he finally came to a stop after breaking through the throng of people. Max still couldnât figure out who her brother was talking to, hell maybe heâd just lost his mind and finally gone in sane. That seemed reasonable.
âJackie boy!â Billy yelled out, not caring about the people who turned to look at him in confusion. Yep. Max was pretty sure her brother was insane.
Just as Max was about to try and argue with the brain dead idiot, a tall unfamiliar blonde whipped around to stare at them.
âBilly fucking Hargrove!?â The blonde, Jackie?, exclaimed in delighted surprise as he moved towards them, a smaller figure trailing behind him.
Come to think of it, that was a very familiar figure indeed.
âEl!?â Max yelled out in confusion as the pair walked closer.
âHi Maxâ El responded happily once they were close enough to not need to shout. Max stared at the other girl in shock as she stood comfortably next to the complete stranger, but before Max could question it she was interrupted by her stupid brother.
âWhat the hell are you doing here?â Billy exclaimed, though strangely enough it was full of joy and surprise instead of his usual ire.
âOh you know, same shit different townâ the guy shrugged slightly, though Billy seemed to frown in distaste at his answer.
âWell fuck. Whatâs your name now?â Billy asked, Max couldnât help but frown, what the hell kind of question is that?
âMercer. Its official and everythingâ The weirdo smiled, Billy smiled as he fist bumped the other guy.
âNice. Better than that other shit. The Mercers good?â Billy asked, his shoulders tensed slightly at the question.
âYeah, was a sweet old ladyâ the guyâs smile was sad, Billy only nodded his head in condolence.
âWhat the hell is going on?â Max asked frustrated, she didnât particularly care who answered her question as long as she got an answer.
âMy brother. Jackâ El replied happily as she looked up at Jack who smiled back at her, Billy only raised and eyebrow as Maxâs mouth hung open slightly in confusion.
âYour brother? You donât have a brother?â Max said slowly.
âNew brotherâ El smiled brightly as she looked at Max, much in the same way a child would show you a new drawing they were proud of.
âWhat?â Max furrowed her brows in confusion, El frowned slightly at her response and moved closer to Jack.
âMy new brother. Jack Hopperâ El said possessively.
âMercer Jane, Iâm a Mercerâ Jack said softly as he placed his hand on her hair and gently tussled it. El crinkled her nose a little in response.
âAnd Hopper now?â She asked, well more like insisted.
âUhhâŚsureâ Jack just shrugged uncomfortably, he turned to Billy and shrugged again as if to say âit is what it isâ. El seemed happy with his response and squeezed his hand with a smile.
âThat doesnât make any sense!â Max exclaimed as she crossed her arms. El frowned slightly.
âLeft the bad men. Like me. My new brotherâ El seemed just as confused as Max, but by the girlâs reaction instead of her own words.
âSo heâs like you?â Max lowered her voice slightly, careful that no one else would hear them.
âYes? My brother?â El copied her, though she was confused by the whispering.
âSo he can doâŚ.you knowâ Max prompted, not so subtly glancing at an unamused Billy.
âWhat? No? Not that. My new brother. You know. My brother?â El started to become frustrated with her friends lack of understanding, and her inability to explain it in a way Max would understand.
El looked up at Jack distressed, tugging at his arm in hopes that he would be able to explain it for her. However, it was Billy that beat him to it.
âJackâs a foster kidâ Billy looked down at Max slightly.
âOhâ Max said slowly as undsranding finally dawned on her.
âYes! My new brotherâ El exclaimed happily as she smiled up at Billy, grateful for the teenâs assistance. Billy only shrugged at her.
âSo youâre the chief of policeâs new problem, howâs that figure? What did you do?â Billy smirked at Jack who couldnât help but laugh softly.
âOh you know, no where else to put me for a few days so went home with the cheifâ Jack laughed to himself.
âReally?â Max asked almost skeptically
âYep. That or a holding cell and Iâve spent plenty of time in thoseâ Jack and Billy both laughed at that.
âNo shit?â Billy chuckled at the mental image.
âYeah then I met Jane, like two peas in a pod right?â Jack grinned drown at the girl, who was still wrapped around his arm.
âYes! We keep youâ El responded happily as she hugged his side.
âHowâd you convince Hopper to do that?â Max asked, confused on how El had managed to get too many rules Hopper to agree to keeping a whole other person.
âAsked Joyceâ El grinned cheekily, okay that made sense to Max.
âOkay but how do you two know each otherâ Max looked suspiciously between Billy and Jack.
âWe were in the same home a while backâ Jack shrugged at the girl.
âYou are in foster care!?â Max shouted in surprise at Billy, who only raised an unimpressed eyebrow in response.
âYeah. For a little while a few years ago. Before your mum and Neil got hitchedâ Billy said as if it were nothing.
âWhy?â Max asked with a frown. Billy ignored her completely.
âSo youâre back witn your old man?â Jack asked softly.
âYeah, same old same oldâ Billy shrugged as he locked eyes with Jack, seemingly having a silent conversation.
âThe chief treating you good?â Billy asked, his eyes subtly glancing over Jack and checking for any obvious discomfort.
âYes. No bad menâ El nodded sternly at Billy who gazed at her for a moment, before his eyes flickered to Jack for confirmation.
âYeah all good so far. So your dad got married?â Jack shrugged before changing to topic.
âYeah, married shitbirdâs mumâ Billy groaned, just to annoy max while she huffed beside him.
âGot yourself a little sister thenâ Jack laughed happily.
âStep sisterâ Max and Billy replied in unison, glaring at each other.
âBesides, youâre not much better offâ Billy smirked as he gestured to where El was still suctioned to Jacks arm.
âNah, Janes greatâ Jack laughed again as he ruffled her hair; El happily leaned in to the touch.
âWhat are you doing out here anyway?â Max asked, fed up with the weird encounter.
âJane wanted some fresh airâ Jack shrugged.
âSo you came to the school?â Max raised an unimpressed eyebrow, Billy whacked the back of her head in reprimanding, though his heart wasnât in it. Max scowled at him.
âYes, to invite you for sleepoverâ El supplied happily as she looked at Max.
âAwesomeâ Max ginned, already planning the things they could do.
âYou come too?â El looked to Billy, surprising everyone.
âWhat?â Billy furrowed his brows in confusion.
âYou come, for Jack?. Double sleepover?â El grinned brightly as Jack snorted in humour behind her.
âYou hear that Hargrove? Double sleepover. Iâll braid your hair and everyhingâJack couldnât help but smirk. Billy laughed honestly.
âYes! Do hair and movies and snacks! Double sleepover!!â El quickly became more excited with the idea as she began listing all the possible things they could all do.
âReally?â Max asked, unsure about the whole idea.
âYes! Just girls and brothers! No others allowed!â El laughed happily, bouncing on her feet at the idea.
âWellâŚokayâ Max looked hesitantly at Billy, unsure of his reaction.
âSure. Why not, but youâre not touching my hair Mercer. I see the mess you walk around withâ Billy laughed easily his tone lighthearted and breezy. Max stared at him in shock.
âYou wish you had my hair Hargroveâ Jack smirked as he lightly shoved Billy.
âCome at six one fiveâ El replied joyously as she started dragging Jack away, excited to prepare for her first double sleepover. Jack only laughed brightly as he let himself be dragged along by the smaller girl.
After watching the pair disappear Max and Billy silently made their way to the car and began the drive home.
âYou said yesâ Max looked up at Billy, her eyes wide a bewildered.
âWhat?â Billy didnât take his eyes of the road.
âYou said yes to the sleepover. You never say yes to thingsâ Max furrowed her brows at him. Billy quickly glanced at her from the corner of his eye.
âDuh. Itâs a double sleepoverâ Billy smirked as he continued to watch the road. Max was officially sure her brother had lost his mind, or maybe she was the one who was going insane.
