See just how much some parts of Dubai have changed over the past 5 years
If you're on Windows 10, check out the maps app. Switch to aerial view. The satellite imagery seems to be from about 5 years ago (open Google Maps in your browser so you can compare the area you're looking at). This city sure changes a lot so quickly. Some highlights:
Work on the water canal hasn't even begun yet. If you compare the imagery to the latest ones on Google Maps, you can see just how much the canal ate into Safa Park.
Habtoor City is still under construction. Damac's Aykon City doesn't exist. You can still see the old Metropolitan hotel that used to occupy the site.
Large areas of DIFC are still unbuilt. Central Park Towers are still under construction.
A lot of Business Bay is still under construction. The new bridge behind the Marriott Marquis doesn't exist yet.
The current site of the under-construction Vida Residence Downtown was once a parking lot (I remember parking there to go to TGI Friday's on the boulevard which shut down a few years ago).
The Opera district doesn't exist yet.
Burj Vista and many of the other new towers along the boulevard are still flat ground.
The Dubai Fountain is still being expanded.
The Address Residence Sky View is still flat ground.
The Address Boulevard's foundations are rising from the ground.
Fountain Views and the surrounding area is still flat ground.
All the expansion work on the Dubai Mall hasn't started yet.
District One is still sand.
Dubai Creek Harbour contains many artificial lagoons (it was indeed formerly "The Lagoons" by Sama Dubai before Emaar took over the area).
A lot of the Palm Jumeirah is still undeveloped.
The Beach at JBR is still under construction. Bluewaters is still fresh out of the sea.
A lot of the new buildings around Ibn Battuta don't exist.
JVC is basically sand.
Dubai Hills Estate is sand (even Google Maps isn't that up to date, the current site is bustling with activity and many new buildings have risen).
