Desert Varnish
When Charles Darwin was a young man aboard the HMS Beagle, he explored a shore off the coast of South America, where he was intrigued by rock outcroppings that he said, “glittered in the sunlight”. He deducted that the rocks shone because of a coating of thin layers of metallic oxides, but could not explain how it might have been made.
Geologists have since found the same coating that they now call “desert varnish”, in many locales and has even been proposed to exist on Mars based on data from various missions. Although they are no more certain of its provenance than Darwin was, there are several ideas that try to explain this “glittery rock”. These ideas have arisen by two observations that give reason to suspect that this substance may be a product of biology.
The first observation is that the thin layers of minerals and chemicals that desert varnish reveals in cross sections resembles the layers found in “stromatolites.” These are the formations that in Shark Bay, Australia and in upstate New York. Strom’s, for short, are formed by many generations of bacteria that layer up, live and then die one atop another. So the thinking goes, the layering of desert varnish might result from a similar biological process.
The second observation is that many of the chemicals in desert varnish layers, most notably manganese and iron, are not in the rocks (such as sandstone) that desert varnish typically varnishes, but are in fact produced by known organisms.
These observations are a long way from a clear-cut case for life though as no laboratory microbiologist has been able to coax bacteria or algae to make desert varnish. Just as discouraging (to those who might wish it to be a product of organisms), bacteria found in ‘in situ’ desert varnish (the bacteria that might reasonably be expected to produce it) are of many varieties, too many, microbiologists think, to turn out the same product so consistently.
It is possible that the stuff that intrigued Darwin and so many after him is the end result of some very complex chemistry. But no one has been able to reproduce that either. So it appears that at the moment, a natural phenomenon that exists for us to see, and after nearly two centuries of study remains a mystery. That’s the exciting part of science though, the try and solve these mysteries – some of which may never be solved, and I personally quite like the thought of that.

Environmental solutions to go global

Environmental solutions to go global
Flinders University synthetic chemistry lab Associate Professor Justin Chalker, right, with Chalker Lab researcher Nicholas Lundquist. Credit: Flinders University/SA Government
New Australian technology that could fix some of the world’s biggest environmental pollution problems—oil spills, mercury pollution and fertiliser runoff—will soon be available to global markets following the signing of a landmark partnership with Flinders University.
The collaboration, between new generation environmental technology company Clean Earth Technologies (CET) and the Chalker Research Lab at Flinders, will support ongoing development of the absorbent polysulfide “clean-up” agent invented by award-winning Flinders scientist Associate Professor Justin Chalker.
Clean Earth Technologies executives have formalised the agreement which assigns a suite of patents to the Singapore-based company. CET will commercialise the new polysulfide material for global markets, with plans to set up the first manufacturing facility in South Australia.
The Chalker Research Lab’s latest academic paper unveils a new class of sulfur polymers that are eight times faster at capturing mercury in water than previous polysulfides, and significantly improved over elemental sulfur alone, which is commonly used in mercury spill kits.
The research found that all of the polysulfides studied were exceptionally effective at trapping various forms of mercury, including a mercury-based fungicide that can pollute water, and is often used on sugarcane, potatoes and rice. The patent for these polymers is now owned by CET.
‘Mercury Sorbents Made By Inverse Vulcanization of Sustainable Triglycerides: The Plant Oil Structure Influences the Rate of Mercury Removal from Water’ (February 2020) by AD Tikoalu, NA Lundquist and JM Chalker has been published in Advanced Sustainable Systems DOI: 10.1002/adsu.201900111
The new solutions complement CET’s existing cyanide and mercury-free gold processing technology.
What is the polysulfide product?
The polysulfide is a polymer that absorbs pollutants and is made from two low-cost ingredients—sulfur, a waste by-product of the petroleum industry which is currently stockpiled in massive volumes around the world, and plant oil, such as canola. It can even be made from waste cooking oil.
How are the polymers used?
The Chalker research team is experimenting with a range of polysulfides for different uses. The material has already proven to be effective in managing agricultural fertiliser release, capturing mercury pollution in its various forms, and absorbing oil spills.
Examples include:
Mercury—a toxic neuro-poison, is a problem by-product for industries like oil and gas, coal-fired power plants, mineral processes, and agriculture. As well as being a health threat—it is banned in many countries—mercury can cause brittle pipes increasing maintenance costs and safety risks.
Oil and gas—variations of the new polysulfide efficiently soak up spills—from removing oil slicks on the surface of oceans and waterways, to domestic garages and driveways.
Fertiliser—The polysulfide can be mixed with nutrients, forming a fertiliser-composite that helps slow/control the release of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) nutrients. This optimises crop feeding and limits damaging runoff into the environment. It differs from many commercial slow-release fertilisers, because it does not leave behind microplastic residue.
E-Waste: While not a polymer, the second patent assigned to CET investigates a variety of benign methods for recycling and managing e-waste.
The patents cover numerous areas, including a class of novel polymers used for environmental remediation, and a new mercury- and cyanide-free method of precious metal extraction and recovery.
The agreement also includes a research collaboration that will provide ongoing funding for Associate Professor Chalker and his team, including scholarships and salaries for researchers, and royalties as they continue to find new ways to use the breakthrough product.
Flinders University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Robert Saint congratulated Associate Professor Chalker and his team for making big inroads into solving real-world problems via the commercialisation of the new green polymer technology.
“World-class research at Flinders University addresses challenges of local, national and global significance to deliver outcomes that improve lives,” Professor Saint says. “I can think of no better example than the work of the Chalker Laboratory in turning their outstanding research into new resources that can be used to deliver a cleaner world.”
CET Chairman and Co-Founder Paul Hanna says the partnership is an important step forward in the company’s search for an answer to some of the world’s most pressing environmental waste problems.
“We are heavily focused on some of the biggest and most challenging environmental problems in the world today—devastating oil spills, growing piles of e-waste and toxic mercury pollution,” Mr Hanna says.
“Most countries are grappling with the same big issues and they come at a huge financial, social and environmental cost.
“We are looking for smarter, more effective solutions and our partnership with Flinders University, and the Chalker Research Lab, will go a long way to addressing many of these problems.
“Technology like this, that uses waste to solve waste problems, has huge advantages for industry at the big end of town. It can also save the lives of thousands of small, artisanal miners around the world who use poisonous chemicals, like mercury, to survive and the communities around them.”

Does my bird recognize me?
I was asked the other week if I think the birds I work with “know” who I am and can distinguish me from other humans. Personally, I can tell that the hens and turkeys I train at the research laboratory, the raptors I work with in the evenings, and my own pet chickens behave towards me in a way that’s different from how they react to other human beings, suggesting that they do recognize me as an individual. But, as a someone working in behavioural research and running a science-based blog, of course I’m not going to leave you all with nothing but personal anecdotes!
Hypothetically, chickens (and other birds that live in complex social groups) are capable of telling the difference between human faces, at the very least. We can make this assumption based on the fact that 1) individuals living in societies with selective/affiliative relationships/hierarchies (as chickens most certainly do) have to be able to differentiate between each other and remember each others’ features (eye position, beak length, feather colour/pattern, movement/behaviour pattern, vocalizations, etc.) to survive (I’ve previously touched on this here). If no one recognize anyone and keep track of who’s above and below who, there would be total chaos! 2), Pigeons have been trained to discriminate not only between different people’s faces, but between different genders and emotions as well (Watanabe and Masuda, 2010). There are no official scientific reports of similar tests being done with chickens that I could find, but based on their behavioural biology, and the things that I’ve personally trained chickens to do for my research, I’m confident that they’d be more than capable of it, too.
(Photo from https://experiment.com/projects/how-do-birds-see-the-world)
So, while it’s more than likely that chickens can discriminate between different human faces, this does not strictly mean they recognize their subject as individuals, per se. Individual recognition requires that the bird can recognize someone as a whole, and not just a forward-facing portrait of that person, as most recognition experiments do (Tibbetts and Dale, 2007). The bird has to be capable of forming a mental image of an individual from any angle, and also be able to use other identifying features other than the face, such as the person’s mannerisms and voice, like I mentioned above. Apparently, pigeons have difficulty with this. And again, there’s nothing in the literature for it using chickens as a subject. But, I think any backyard poultry owner who’s experienced the joy of their birds eagerly running over for treats or cuddles while ignoring other humans would strongly agree that they recognize their owner (and have positively associated them with food and maybe even affection, no less!), especially if you hatch your own chicks and have them imprint on you.

On a side note, let’s consider non-social birds, like raptors. Most raptors, with a few exceptions, live solitary lives in the wild outside of breeding season. They don’t live in large groups, and don’t have to deal with pecking orders. At the very least, they might have to remember if they’ve had to chase away the same intruder from their territory before, or if they chose the same partner to mate with the previous year. When I’m doing shows/presentations with my raptors, people frequently also ask me if the bird I’m holding “knows” me. I respond by saying that it’s more likely that things are the other way around - I know the bird very well. I know how to approach and handle the bird in the ways that make them feel most comfortable, I know what the possible stressors are in its environment that sets them off that I have to work to avoid, and all of their other quirks. All of this knowledge/understanding of the bird helps me give them as positive an interaction with me as possible during every training session, resulting in them being more comfortable with me, as opposed to a novice trainer/someone who has never worked with that specific bird before. This may also partly factor into why chickens behave differently in response to certain owners, compared to other humans they encounter. For example, a big part of the reason that my chickens seem to always want to be near me (other than the fact that I’m basically a constant source of treats), but avoid my parents, probably has to do with the fact that I specifically know how to walk up to/pet/feed them without accidentally startling or intimidating them.
As another side note, some birds discriminate and remember human faces for years, without tons of training involved. These include species in urban environments that often interact with humans. Mockingbirds that are disturbed by a human in a mask while they’re sitting on their eggs will display increasingly threatening behaviour (alarm-calling and mobbing) with each day the masked intruder appears (Stehlin et al., 2017). However, they behave towards someone in a new mask as if they’ve only encountered them for the first time. Again though, the researchers couldn’t prove for certain whether this was due to recognition, or just discrimination.
(American crow photo by me, please ask before re-posting)
A more famous example here on tumblr might be a similar experiment done with crows. Researchers wore masks and trapped crows, who responded by making vocalizations used as threats to ward off predators. Amazingly, these crows made the same calls if they saw someone wearing the same mask three years later (Marzluff et al., 2010). It’s also been shown that different regions of their brains respond to different emotional states in response to the mask (Marzluff et al., 2012). In another experiment, one group of crows was trapped by a researcher wearing a “threatening” mask, while the other group was captured, but also fed by a researcher wearing a “caring” mask. Seeing either the threatening or caring mask would activate different neural circuits in the crows’ brains - the first associated with negative emotions, and the second with reward. It’ll probably be a long time before any lab gets the funding to do PET scans on chickens, but until then, I think us doting chicken-lovers will happily agree that our birds know and recognize us!

L-Tyrosine, 3-hydroxy-.
L-DOPA is one of the direct precursors of dopamine. The dopamine molecule is the most desirable substance in the human body. It improves well-being increases motivation and allows you to achieve your goals. L-Dopa supplementation increases dopamine levels in the body. Levodopa or L-Dopa is known by various names; Levodopa, Levodopa, L-3. The chemical name of this molecule is 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine. Levodopa is one of the most promising agents for treating neurodegradative diseases including Parkinson's. In a number of scientific articles, we can learn about its high effectiveness in treating CNS disorders. A proven benefit of Levodopa supplementation is increased concentration. Indirectly, L-dopa improves motivation. Other benefits include an increase in sperm motility. The most abundant sources of L-Dopa are the Mucuna Pruriens and Velvet Bean plants. It was from these plants that the L-Dopa molecule was extracted. Most human studies have used single doses of 5,000mg of dried dried product of these plants. A dose of 5grams was given to people suffering from Parkinson's disease. In healthy subjects, the recommended dosage should be started at 2500mg.
Dopa has two isomers:
D-DOPA
L-DOPA
The L-Dopa isomer has a much higher bioavailability. The two compounds differ in the chirality of the molecule. Dried Mucuna Pruriens, exhibits broad nueroprotective and antidegradative effects. It significantly increases the availability of dopamine in the body and restores adequate levels of serotonin.
The offered levodopa has been physicochemically tested by spectroscopy and chromatography. It contains no toxic contaminants or heavy metals. The L-DOPA sold is a synthetic product of very high purity. Due to the high purity of L-Dopa, the product should not be consumed by humans and is only used for laboratory testing.
For more detailed information, see the article on L-Dopa.
