It was this batch which back in 2017 faced the board system, in 10th class,  for the first time after the CCE pattern in CBSE Board was scrapped, and now to act as the cherry on top, they were exposed to this pandemic. The uncertainties for this batch started much before the pandemic though. In February 2020, due to communal violence in North East Delhi, a lot of students of the CBSE board were not even able to attempt their board exams. Not only that but the papers which were expected to be held later were scrapped in May due to the virus. These students, after working hard the entire year, never even got the chance to prove their potential and braved the ramifications of whatever the system had in store for them. The ironic thing is, not being able to write the most important exam in an Indian school student’s life was not even the worst thing to have happened to them. What is considered far worse, is the untimely postponement of competitive exams. It’s like, almost reaching the finishing line but realizing it’s a mirage, and you still have miles to go. Engineering and medical exams which collectively have more than 10 lakh aspirants, have already been postponed twice. Law entrances like CLAT and AILET have been postponed 4 times. If this is not the true test of an aspirant’s dedication and patience, I don’t know what is. The exam schedule has suddenly turned into some sort of “Agni pariksha” that no student consented to, but is still being forced into. there is so much uncertainty in everything, yet students are expected to maintain their demeanour and continue studying like nothing is wrong. These truly are the test of the times. Some institutions and states even went ahead with holding exams amidst the pandemic. The biggest example of why that should not happen is the- Karnataka state SSLC exam. The students were assured that social distancing measures and proper precautions would be taken, but to no avail. Videos of the exam centres went viral and no concept of social distancing was observed. The biggest question which arises after looking at such examples is, that why are students being made to choose between their future and their health? In case a student gets affected due to exposure to other students in the exam hall, he poses the threat of acting as an agent and transmitting the virus to his entire family. In such a risky venture, students giving centre-based exams is not advisable. Nevertheless, we are not learning from our mistakes. As of today, COMEDK is scheduled for August 19. It’s the first of its kind nationwide centre-based exam. Hopefully, good sense shall prevail and maybe this time we’ll get to see proper safety measures in place. If so, is the case, it shall set a precedent for proper conduct of further exams and give a much-sought relief to JEE and NEET aspirants who are set to write their respective exams in the first two weeks of September.

MHRD reschedules JEE Main, CBSE Board and NIOS exams due to COVID-19 - Times of India

NEW DELHI: As further precautionary measures due to the COVID-19 breakout, the ministry of human resource development on Wednesday stated that all ongoing exams should be rescheduled. Following the directions of the MHRD, CBSE has decided to postpone all the exams between March 19 and 31, 2020. The board will announce the new schedule likely on March 31, 2020.

The move will have a cascading effect as NIOS exams and JEE (main) too have been rescheduled. As per the directions issued by Amit Khare, secretary, HRD, the university exams too are to be postponed. As a fall out, the college/ university admissions too are likely to be delayed this year.

However, ICSE and ISC exams have not been postponed yet.

CBSE in its notification stated that along with the exams scheduled between March 19 and 31, 2020, the rescheduled examinations for the North East Delhi candidates will be rescheduled. Along with that the ongoing evaluation process has been put on hold and will be rescheduled post March 31, 2020.

NIOS too postponed the dates. Early on Wednesday the Apex committee of NIOS decided not to change the dates. However following the directions, CB Sharma, chairperson of NIOS told TOI, “On the instructions of the Secretary, School Education and Literacy (MHRD) Amit Khare all examination related activities will remain suspended till March 31, 2020. We will review the situation closer to March 31, 2020 and decide on the future course of action. All concerned are requested to take pro-active measure and the official notification will be issued tomorrow.”

The JEE (main) exams which are scheduled for April 7 to 12, 2020 will also be rescheduled. According to a senior official if National Testing Agency, “Following the directions of the government, we will take a view on the new dates on March 31, 2020. NTA will take a view on the dates after the CBSE and NIOS announces their new dates.”

MHRD in his direction stated that all institutions have been requested to notify the helpline numbers which students can access for their queries and urged the parents and students not to panic. “MHRD is committed to ensure safety and security of students as also the maintenance of the academic calendar and all possible steps will be taken in this regards.

Supreme Court lifts stay on IIT-JEE admissions

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the counselling and admission into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) across the country on the basis of the results of the IIT-JEE (Advance) 2017 by vacating its stay on it.

The top court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra vacated its stay ordered last Friday, but asked the high courts not to interfere in the petitions regarding counselling and admission to the IITs to avoid any confusion.

Counselling is a process in which a candidate, who clears the entrance examination, chooses the best college and stream according to his or her choice based on their rank.

The bench, also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and M M Shantanagoudar, asked the IITs to give an undertaking that such mistakes will not recur and make sure that no situation in which bonus marks have to be awarded arose in future.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, representing the IITs, said such a situation will not arise in future. The bench said the 2005 judgement in Guru Nanak University case will not apply in the present matter as there were a huge number of students involved and there was a system of negative marking in the exam.

The apex court also noted that an experts' body of IITs had met twice to decide that bonus marks should be awarded across the board for the wrong questions.

The Supreme Court had on July 7 restrained the IITs from conducting further counselling and admissions saying the court will go by its earlier judgement of 2005 and bonus marks cannot be given to those who have not attempted the wrong questions.

The AG had, however, pointed out that there was negative marking for every unsuccessful question and there may be some students who had opted not to answer "the said vague questions fearing negative marking".

Therefore, across the board bonus marks were given to the candidates, Venugopal had told the court, adding that otherwise the IITs would have to strike down the marks.

The AG had also said that it was difficult to re-evaluate the answersheets of over two lakh students who took the examination and awarding of bonus marks across board was the most practical solution.

The apex court had on June 30 issued notice to the Ministry of Human Resource Development on a plea seeking quashing of the IIT-JEE 2017 rank list.

The petition, filed by an IIT aspirant Aishwarya Agarwal, had sought the court's direction to declare that the action of awarding bonus marks to candidates who had appeared in the JEE (Advanced)- 2017 examination was wrong and violated her right, as well as that of other students.

Since then several other students had approached the apex court seeking quashing of rank list.

Several IIT aspirants in their pleas had sought a direction for preparation of the all-India rank list after rectifying the scores of JEE (Advanced) and also award marks for the incorrect questions to the candidates who had attempted the right answers.

Supreme Court restrains counselling and admission in IITs through JEE-17

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday restrained the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country from conducting further counselling and admitting students on the basis of the results of the IIT-JEE (Advance) 2017 results, till further orders.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and A M Khanwilkar also restrained the High Courts across the country from entertaining any fresh petition relating to the counselling and admissions to the IITs from Friday onwards.

It directed the registeries of the High Courts to inform it about the number of petitions challenging IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) 2017 rank list and awarding of additional marks to all candidates who had appeared in the test.

The bench directed that copies of the order be sent to the Registrars General of all the High Courts and posted the matter for further hearing on July 10.

During the hearing, Attorney General KK Venugopal urged the court to suggest an equitable solution as there were a huge number of students who had taken the examination.

Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for some of the candidates, said the action of the IITs in awarding “bonus marks” to candidates for the defective questions given in the JEE (Advanced) 2017 examination was “utterly wrong” and violated the right of all the students.

The bench suggested that the solution was that those who had attempted such questions shall be awarded bonus marks.

It said the court will go by its earlier judgement of 2005 and added that bonus marks cannot be given to those who have not attempted the questions.

Venugopal pointed out that there was negative marking for every unsuccessful question and there may be some students who had opted not to answer “the said vague questions fearing negative marking”.

Therefore, across the board bonus marks were given to the candidates, otherwise the IITs would have to strike down the marks, he said.

The AG appearing for IITs said it was difficult to re-evaluate the answersheets of over two lakh students who took the examination and awarding of bonus marks across board was the most practical solution.

He said till now, over 33,000 students have taken admission in various streams of courses in premier engineering institutes of the country.

The bench said it would try to find a solution to the problem which needs to solved at the earliest, but as an interim measure, the IITs should not conduct further counselling and take admissions on the basis of the JEE-2017.

It said the admission to the IITs can only be allowed after deciding the validity of award bonus mark for wrong question to all students.

Option 2 Group C Non-Gazetted Senior Section Engineers Exam Conducted by RRB You qualify for Group C jobs by appearing for the exam conducted by the Railway recruitment board. Here are the three engineering departments with following job posts.

NEW DELHI: While women candidates in India can avail fifty per cent concession for applying in Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) Mains, they do not get any cut in registration fees for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), revealed a Right to Information (RTI) query.

According to the reply to the query filed by Neemuch-based activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur, application fee for candidates aspiring for NEET 2020, is Rs 1,500 irrespective of the gender, while in IIT-JEE Mains, application fees for B.E./B.Tech or B.Arch or B.Planning is Rs 650 for boys and Rs 325 for girls under general category and Rs 325 for both boys and girls under SC/ST/PWD and Transgender categories.

However, according to the RTI response, there is a concession in NEET under general category for Economically weaker section (EWS), OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes-Non Creamy Layer). For the entrance exam in India, students who wish to study undergraduate medical courses and dental courses in government or private medical colleges and dental colleges in India, have to pay Rs 1400. Fees for NEET applicants under categories — SC/ST/PWD and Transgender is Rs 800.

The query also found that the agency that conducts both NEET and IIT-JEE Mains is the National Testing Agency (NTA) but it follows a different protocol when it comes to giving concessions to the women candidates for these two exams.

According to the RTI reply, 9,34,828 candidates have registered for the IIT-JEE for 2020 and totalling NEET candidates count is under process. The RTI sought reason for difference in provisions for women candidates for both the entrance exams.

In the response of the query, NTA replied that the role of the agency was limited only to conduct the entrance exams and declaring the results and its work is based on directions given by the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family welfare and National Medical Commission for NEET.

For IIT JEE, the agency is responsible to conduct test and handover the results to Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board.

The NTA conducts Joint Entrance Exam as per the directions given by JEE Apex Board.

The responses to the RTI query were provided by Binod Kumar Sahu, Joint Director (Admin), National Testing Agency.

An NEET PG aspirant in Ujjain, Dr Pooja Verma, told IANS “Yes Rs 1,500 is huge. When the government can give concessions to women in application fees for other entrance exam, they must make provisions for giving concession in NEET too. I know many friends who could not give a second attempt to the NEET because they could not afford a second attempt.”

Dr Priyanka Ratnakar, an MBBS final year student and NEET aspirant from Madhya Pradesh seconds the thought, saying “Sometimes it becomes difficult for women to go for a second attempt given that the application fees for NEET is too high as compared to IIT-JEE. Women candidates must be given fee concession in applying for NEET as given in many entrance tests. Women not only deal with the entrance exams pressure but there are other societal pressures too.”

However, when IANS tried contacting NTA, no one responded.
