Joel was someone who knew how to make you squirm. You were standing in his room, one of his bandanas tied across your eyes and the cool fabric of his workman’s leather gloves ghost across your abdomen.

It had only taken him wearing his gloves around you one time for your curiosity to be peaked. The way his arms flexed, the muscles emerging from the openings in the gloves and the way the dark leather contrasted with his tanned skin had you longing to sink your teeth into him.

Now the cool leather teased your skin, much cooler and plusher than the warm calloused skin of his hands. The change was enticing and gave you, along with help from the blindfold, an exciting thrill of dulled senses. You tracked his body by the sound of his footsteps, the motion only giving you small warnings as the gloves ran over your chest. He circling you, and you can practically feel the way he’s thinking about you, skin flush and body reacting shamelessly to each passing caress.

You feel the air around you shift, and his mouth is on yours. He tastes like coffee, and he’s gathering you in his arms until your legs are wrapped around him and he deepens the kiss, licking into your mouth and nibbling on your lips until they’re plump and swollen.

Your head is spinning, and you realize just how under his spell you are. You tighten your legs around him, desperate for any small bit of friction and when one of his gloved hands wraps possessively around your throat a small whine slips free.

"Please?" You don't even know what you're begging for, any lasting lingering piece of his attention is enough to drive you insane. He hums, contemplating the next way to toy with you.

Suddenly you're falling back on to the bed, laid out in full display for him, "Can you use more words princess? Tell me what you want." You can practically see the knowing smile on his face loving to see you fluster and stumble through your thoughts. The bed shifts beneath your hips, as he plants his hands near your sides, you feel his stubbled chin ghost over the top of your thighs.

Your cheeks flush, his teasing making you feel utterly filthy but you can't even think to form an answer when his lips whisper against your skin, "Doesn't matter does it? You'll take everything I give you." Then touch your sex for the first time, just barely moving over your seam. The leather feels different, smoother and you can feel how slick you are as the gloves pass over your clit with ease.

He lets his mouth kiss over your mound, sweet hungry kisses like he can't help but get sweet samples of your skin. You shift, tilting your hips into his touches using your body to beg him for something anything.

He pushes your thighs apart with his shoulders, then he harshly sucks your clit into your mouth. Senses heightened you groan as he strokes the sensitive bud with his tongue. His name slipping from your lips, "More."

In the deep recesses of your mind, you know that this would be enough have your toes curling in no time, but the sweet slide of two fingers is tortuous.

His tongue leaves you, and he pushes down on your lower abdomen, crooking two fingers deep inside you and moving his hand with such tremendous pace you think you start to scream.

The pleasure is fast and white hot, burning all the way from the tips of your ears and curling your toes. When Joel presses a finger to your clit, your body falls limp, legs shaking and voice hoarse from a mixture of exhaustion. You're loosely aware of wetness binding your thighs together as Joel withdrawals from you.

"Open." You do as asked and suck the sweet spend off his work gloves ready to return the favor.

Revealed at last... the secret origin of Maxwell Lord (at least, until Geoff Johns runs out of ideas).

SCORE: 10

Maxwell Lord is one of my favorite comic-book characters of all time. His Phlegmatic personality is a very nice addition to a comic-book with a comedic tone. His super-power (which has not been introduced yet) can be very subtle and his business nature makes sense for the late eighties.

He is also no hero... (and he is definitely not a super-villain). He is just a selfish man with a lot of power that sometimes does horrible things, but for the most part, it looks like world peace was his superior ambition (maybe for the wrong reasons, but a great outcome anyway).

Of course, then Didio decided to give the finger to the fans, destroying both, Max and Ted at the same time. Sure, the character became more famous since then (appearing in TV shows and movies)... but he kind of lost his personality forever (well, technically, he wasn’t even alive when they retconned him).

But enough about the future. This story closes many plot threads introduced in the previous 10 issues (also explaining why Mister Miracle recognized fourth world technology in the satellite that gave birth to the JLI).

It kind of mixes the events of Millennium as well, with that experience changing Max’s mindset.

Now I completely forgot Metron was involved in this story...

And things aren’t as I remembered them either (I remember the post zero-hour retelling of this story, with the artifical entity being Kilg%re).

Fire and Ice become a new dynamic duo for this title (we already had Blue and Gold). But they are still to join the league.

Does the humor become too silly sometimes? Yes, Those lines shouldn’t work in any story. They were clearly added to the finished art, so you can actually remove them without affecting the story. But it is kind of this book’s thing. These are B or C level heroes, and it is nice of them to not take themselves too seriously.

Summary:

Turns out Maxwell Lord is not dead, for reasons that are as yet unexplained.

Max is in some kind of trouble and needs superheroic protection, for reasons that remain vague.

Back at headquarters, Black Canary gets to know the REAL Rocket Red, Dmitri “Yakoff Smirnov” Pushkin (the previous Red was revealed to be a Manhunter two issues ago).

The team gets an alert from Max’s office: Max, Martian Manhunter, and Captain Atom are under attack from some kind of robotic tentacle things.  Batman reasons that anything strong enough to subdue the League’s strongest members needs to be met with drastic action (action which is frankly kind of unsettling in this post-911 era), and they ram the building at top speed:

Yikes.

Black Canary shorts out the power to the entire building, rendering the robotic attackers ineffective.  Max believes the attack was masterminded by old League villain The Construct.

Conveniently, The Construct is right where Max said he’d be and he proceeds to do battle with the League.  During the fight, The Construct is in contact with a mysterious figure monitoring the fight, whom he refers to as “Master.”  When the smoke clears, The Construct’s master is revealed to be:

Thoughts:  This is primarily a setup issue for #12′s big reveal.  The Max Lord subplot has been simmering throughout the first year of the title, and #12 promises some dramatic shakeups (NO SPOILERS).

It’s cool how vital each member of the creative team is to the success of this book.  John Workman is one of the all-time great letterers, but his work in this issue just seems “off.”  All the characters just sound wrong when it’s anybody but Lappan.  Same thing with the colors-  Old comics look weird with modern coloring techniques even when they try to stick to the original guides, which is why I am not doing reprints or Comixology for this readthrough.  It’s not nostalgia so much as trying to stay as close to the creator’s choices as possible.  Now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to go listen to Living Colour’s Vivid album and pretend it’s 1988 again.
