The Lokayukta Special Court, on Monday, issued NBW against Sasikala and Ilavarasi, who are currently on bail, besides ordering to issue notice to sureties.

BENGALURU: VK Sasikala, a close aide of former Tamil Nadu chief minister late J Jayalalithaa, and her sister-in-law Ilavarasi have been issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) by the Lokayukta Special Court, which is hearing the case related to alleged ‘preferential treatment’ received by them while serving sentence in the disproportionate assets case.

The Lokayukta Special Court, on Monday, issued NBW against Sasikala and Ilavarasi, who are currently on bail, besides ordering to issue notice to sureties. The hearing has been adjourned till October 5.

Sasikala and Ilavarasi were named accused no. 5 and 6, respectively, in a case which was registered by the Anti-Corruption Bureau in 2018. The ACB had booked the accused persons under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Among the six accused, the Karnataka High Court, in May early this year, quashed the proceedings against three accused, who were officials of the Bengaluru Central Prison, where Sasikala and Ilavarasi were lodged from 2017 to 2021. In June, Sasikala had also approached the High Court, requesting quashing of the proceedings against her.

As Sasikala and Ilavarasi failed to appear before the Lokayukta Special Court, which is hearing the case, despite issuing a summons, the court issued NBW against them on Monday.

It may be recalled that senior IPS officer D Roopa had exposed that the staff of Bengaluru Central Prison had extended ‘VIP treatment’ to Sasikala and Ilavarasi, who were serving jail sentences in a multi-crore disproportionate assets case.

The Enforcement Directorate, which arrested Balaji in connection with an alleged cash-for-jobs scam in the state transport department, had moved the Supreme Court against a Madras High Court order. The high court had allowed the shifting of Balaji.

A Supreme Court vacation bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice M M Sundresh noted that the petition was still pending in the high court and asked the ED to approach that court.

“The observations made by the high court was in an interim order and any oral observation made by this court shall have no bearing on the case,” the bench said while posting the matter for hearing on July 4.

Bajali, the electricity and prohibition and excise minister of Tamil Nadu, was arrested on June 14 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in an alleged cash-for-jobs scam that took place when he was the transport minister in an AIADMK government led by J Jayalalithaa.

The high court passed an interim order after Balaji’s wife filed a habeas corpus petition alleging illegal arrest.

CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is carrying out searches at the premises of V Senthil Balaji, Tamil Nadu minister for electricity, prohibition and excise in Chennai and Karur from this morning. The ED team is also raiding the minister's brother's house in Karur.

The Supreme Court had last month allowed police and ED to probe into an alleged cash-for-jobs scam against Balaji, who also holds the Prohibition and Excise portfolio.

Senthil Balaji was the transport minister in the AIADMK government, led by the late J Jayalalithaa, during the period 2011-15. There were complaints against him, in which it was alleged he had received huge amounts as bribes from various persons for appointing them as drivers and conductors in the transport corporations.

In connection with these allegations, three FIRs were registered against him which culminated in charge sheets filed against him and those charge sheets were now pending before a special court for the trial of criminal cases relating to MPs and MLAs.

Since the charge sheets disclosed the commission of a scheduled offence under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the ED registered the present case against Senthil Balaji and others in July 2021 and took up the investigation.

The searches also come in the wake of Home Minister Amit Shah visiting the city recently and controversy erupted over the blackout in the area which the minister claimed was accidental.

Recently, The Income Tax department conducted raids across Tamil Nadu in around 40 locations at various Government contractors' residences and offices who have alleged connections with Minister Senthil Balaji.

During the searches, supporters of Balaji allegedly created a ruckus and even vandalised a car belonging to the Income Tax (I-T) department and manhandled officials of the department who launched coordinated searches in places across Tamil Nadu linked to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) minister.

This is the second time sleuths of a central agency have entered the state secretariat for searches.

In 2016, when O Panneerselvam was the chief minister of the state after the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, Income tax Department officials conducted searches in the office of the then Chief Secretary P Ramamohana Rao.

TN minister Senthil Balaji hospitalised; breaks down after ED arrest under PMLA

It is learnt that while he was being taken into custody at 2 am, the minister complained of chest pain and was taken to the multi-speciality hospital in Omandurar Estate.

CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after a long session of questioning.

However, the Tamil Nadu minister has been hospitalised in the ICU of a government hospital here early on Wednesday after he complained of uneasiness during ED raids at his premises on June 13.

Initially, Senthil Balaji was taken into custody by the ED after 18 hours of questioning by the Central agency. It is learnt that while he was being taken into custody at 2 am, the minister complained of chest pain and was taken to the multi-speciality hospital in Omandurar Estate. TV visuals showed Balaji being uneasy while being brought to the hospital in the wee hours of this morning.

The arrest sparked concern in the DMK camp as ministers, PK Sekar Babu, and Udayanidi Stalin rushed to the hospital to meet the minister. Sekar Babu claimed there were 'symptoms' Balaji has been 'tortured.'

After visiting Senthil Balaji at the hospital, HR and CE minister Sekar Babu said that the electricity minister was unconscious. "He didn't respond despite calling his name several times. There is swelling on his leg. The state he was brought to the hospital shows there are human rights violations," Sekar Babu said.

He also alleged that the enforcement directorate, CBI and the income tax department are acting at the behest of the central government against those opposing the bad politics of the central government.

"Several leaders, including chief ministers of other states and the parliamentary opposition leader, condemning the union government shows there is opposition centrally. DMK government, led by MK Stalin, will face the problem legally. More than a minister, Senthil Balaji is a DMK worker. The CM will fight for every DMK worker to save him and all actions will be taken based on his guidance," the DMK minister told media persons.

Law minister S Reghupathy, who visited the hospital, also said there was no clarity if Balaji has been arrested. He questioned the need for the ED raids at Balaji's house running non-stop for hours.

DMK advocates, who visited the hospital, demanded the ED officially make it clear immediately whether Balaji has been arrested or not.

Meanwhile, V Ananda Kumar, the nodal officer at the Omandurar hospital, said that Senthil Balaji is being treated for blood pressure and variations in the ECG and added that there were no external injuries to the Electricity Minister. "After Covid-19, several patients come with the complaint and there is a standard operating procedure for such cases. While we are investigating if he has been tortured, there are no external injuries," he added.

The arrest comes after Supreme Court had last month allowed police and ED to probe into an alleged cash-for-jobs scam against Balaji, who also holds the Prohibition and Excise portfolio.

Senthil Balaji was the transport minister in the AIADMK government, led by the late J Jayalalithaa, during the period 2011-15.

There were complaints against him, in which it was alleged he had received huge amounts as bribes from various persons for appointing them as drivers and conductors in the transport corporation.

The ED conducted the searches under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Last month, the Income Tax department too had searched Balaji's close aides in the state.

The searches are also happening in the wake of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit on Sunday. The visit was marred by controversy when street lights went off outside Chennai airport. Balaji has termed it accidental.
