Hello friends. I hope this finds you well. How is your pet cat doing? Did she get fitted for that mouth guard yet? Good, that’ll help with the headaches. Nice. Sweet. Tell her I said hello.

Oh you wanna talk Diego Laxalt? Okay, I’m game. In less than twenty-four hours it appears that Leodini have made eye contact, courted, bedded, and signed a non-disclosure with the Genoan left-back and Uruguayan national, Diego Laxalt. This, was on no one’s radar before yesterday but much like the Samu signing, makes both tactical and economic sense with The Hair Buds (I can do better) using the always-welcome-here Gianluca Lapadula as a piece to drive the price down. The deal appears to be €14m with €4m in possible bonuses, with Genoa owing us Lapadula’s €11′s option, driving the price down to €4-7m. No word on the man’s paycheck. The responses to this transfer have been a lot more positive than Baka and Samu’s, which honestly means nothing to me since online Milan fans are uh... well, fickle, but I figured “Hey, you’re at home sick from work today, what else are you gonna do? Probably just check Twitter a million times waiting for Leodini to announce SMS.” So for those of you who don’t know much about Lax outside his awful hair (c’mon man, at least keep that shit tight), heres a lil’ primer.

History

Purchased by Walter Mazzarri’s Inter in 2013 from Uruguayan side Defensor, the braided bombshell would find himself immediately loaned out to Bologna, and then Sarri’s Empoli in successive seasons, failing to secure consistent playing time at either club. The third loan was the charm though with Inter renting him out to Genoa for 18 months and where, under the tutelage of current Atalanta wizard Gian Piero Gasperini, Laxalt would develop into the attacking left sided player that has piqued the interest of bigger clubs and would eventually convince Genoa to purchase outright for €5.8m and Cristian Ansaldi in 2016. His breakout season came in that 2015-16 campaign, which saw Genoa finish a respectable 11th, marshaling the left side of I Rossoblu defense while hitting the back of the net three times and providing four assists. Gasperini’s departure didn’t see Lax miss a beat, with the speedster one of the few bright spots in Ivan Juric’s (a vastly underrated coach, by the way) 3-man back setup. By now, Lax was attracting attention from bigger clubs for his deep driving runs, speed, and crosses, with Genoa rebuffing numerous attempts by English clubs over the past few transfer windows. At 25, coming off another impressive season, the time for Laxalt to jump into a deeper part of the pool has arrived.

What to expect

Well, let us begin with what a lot of us already know: the kid has wheels. Less than a day after adding more speed on the right with Samu, Leodini have markedly increased the possible pace on the left with the addition of Lax. My own personal recollections of watching him play at Genoa are the direct and uncompromising end-to-end runs, punctuated with accurate crosses or some nimble footwork opening up space for a shot or to find a teammate. He’s good at finding space and he’s a very comfortable and confident ball-carrier and his penetrating runs are a huge part of what put him on the radar of bigger clubs. Because of this ability to beat defenders with speed or dribbling, he can draw defenders in the attacking third, and depending on formation, could provide Calhanoglu with dangerous pockets of space to work his magic. Or, he can blast it from range with a respectable shot accuracy from outside the box (30%). Though his passing is certainly not his strongest attribute with a rather ho-hum 72% completion percentage, his ability to contribute more than just crosses makes him an exciting prospect on the wing or at left-back. Oh and he’s got a pretty first touch.

He’s also been praised for his intelligence both in possession and in defense. Offensively, as alluded to above, he often prefers to wait for the most sensible option when in possession up the pitch, and possesses decent vision for the position. Defensively, coming of a respectable World Cup campaign where he featured in three matches as an out-and-out left back on a four man line, he displayed impressive positioning, balancing both offensive and defensive duties against Russia and Portugal, before being sent home by eventually winners, France. 

However, Lax does come with a few warning labels. For one, he’s spent pretty much his entire club career playing as a left-mid or left wing-back in Genoa’s counter-attacking 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 system. In many ways, his strengths reflect his role as the first touch on the counter, and his runs, confidence, and decision-making are in many ways byproducts of being tasked with that role. In a more possession based setup like Milan’s, and as one in which he may not need to start as deep, or conversely, need to play more conservatively as a left-back, there’s the chance we may experience hiccups in positioning or see him dribble himself into trouble, especially in our defensive third. He’s also not a terribly efficient passer with a 72% completion ratio, which again, for a team that has been trying to play more from the back the last two years, could present some problems.

Rockett’s final words

I like this move a lot even though I’m not sure where he fits in yet. As of right now, he’s a backup for the entire left side of a 4-3-3, as he can slot really anywhere down that side, top to bottom. He’s proficient enough in attack and certainly possessing the required pace to act as a winger. He is an adept enough defender to play left-back, and has both the experience and attributes to play as a left-mid, though it is here where I’d probably consider him only as a back-up. So even if the plan is for Rodriguez to stay, I think you see these braids a lot, albeit it in a few different roles. If we switch formations, again, he can act as both a winger or a very forward thinking left-back depending on the circumstances so much like Baka and Samu, there’s a bit of flexibility in where you can field him contingent on what is necessary, and I dig that a lot (I think we’re transitioning away from a 4-3-3 for the record). Hanging teammates out to dry and his passing worries me a bit, but for his current role and the price (€4-7m) I think this is a really smart piece of business.

Now with everything I just said, and while I joked yesterday that this made R.R. dispensable as a piece for Rabiot, for all you ready thinking that this is an upgrade to R.R.
