THE GIRL BEHIND THE GUN

1918

The Girl Behind the Gun is a three act musical farce by Ivan Caryll (music), Guy Bolton and P. G. Wodehouse (book and lyrics), based on the French farce "Madame et son filleul" (”Madame and Her Godsons”) by Maurice Hennequin and Pierre Veber.

English writers Bolton and Wodehouse wrote nearly twenty musicals together with various composers, primarily Jerome Kern, who introduced them. Their most-produced collaboration is the book for 1934′s Anything Goes, despite the fact that their book was heavily re-written when a real-life sea disaster caused the show to change course. Wodehouse is probably best remembered as the author of the Jeeves and Wooster books, which were also made into musicals  - two of them - both by Alan Ayckbourn and Andrew Lloydd Webber. 

The musical takes place in Fontainbleu, France. In the plot, a soldier / playwright on leave visits his godmother instead of his wife. This pleases the godmother, but angers the wife, who then begins a flirtation with an Army Colonel. 

The original production was produced by produced by Klaw & Erlanger, directed by Edgar MacGregor, and choreographed by Julian Mitchell. 

The musical had its world premiere on August 26, 1918 at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City. First-nighters on the Great Wooden Way were enthusiastic. 

It opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre on September 16, 1918 and ran 160 performances. The cast was headed by Donald Brian, Jack Hazzard, Wilda Rennet, and Ada Mead.

“Quite properly, there was Just enough plot to get the characters on and off the stage. There were a lot of songs with a lilt that will lend them to whistling.” ~ BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE 

Although the great war (World War I) wouldn’t officially end till November 11, 1918, the war was definitely winding down when the musical was first staged. Producers were still anxious to let playgoers know that this was not a war musical.

COLONEL: “Have you got a wife?” PRIVATE: “The jury’s still out.” 

In May 1919, The Girl Behind the Gun, revised and sensibly re-titled Kissing Time, opened in London at the Winter Garden Theatre, where it played 430 performances.

How much more space does the MCU have in their Rogues Gallery? As you mention: a big problem they have is constantly killing off their villains, how much of their available villains have they snuffed out?

Well, let’s go down the list:

Iron Man: Raza of the Ten Rings wasn’t shown to be killed, Obadiah Stane is killed.

Incredible Hulk: Thaddeus Ross becomes an ongoing antagonist, Emil Blonsky/the Abomination is still alive.

Iron Man 2: Ivan Vanko kills himself, Justin Hammer is still alive.

Thor: Laufey is dead, *a* Loki is still alive, the Destroyer is...floating in space, I guess.

Captain America: the Red Skull is on Vormir, Arnim Zola as an evil A.I could easily pop up again.

Avengers: the Chitauri in service to Thanos got dusted by Tony, *a* Loki is still alive.

Iron Man 3: Aldrich Killian is dead, but AIM could come back. The real real Mandarin is going to be the villain for Shang-Chi as a slight improvement on Fu Manchu.

Thor 2: Malekith is dead. He was boring.

Cap 2: Batroc is alive, Rumlow blew himself up in Civil War, Zola could come back, Sitwell is dead, Bucky is a good guy now, Pierce is dead, HYDRA is mostly done but you could get splinter cells and the like.

Guardians: Korath is alive, Ronan died but we saw him in Captain Marvel so he could be used again in preriod pieces, Yondu died in Guardians 2 as a good guy, Nebula is now a good guy.

Avengers 2: Ultron is dead, Wanda is a good guy, Pietro is dead but could come back if Wandavision does some reality warping stuff, Klaw is died in Black Panther.

Ant-Man: Yellowjacket is dead. He was boring.

Cap 3: Rumlow blew himself up, but Zemo is still alive and will be the main antagonist in the Falcon/Winter Soldier Disney+ series.

Doctor Strange: Dormammu is still alive, Kaecilius is a Mindless One but technically still alive, Mordo is still alive and will be a major antagonist in Doctor Strange 2.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Ghost is a good guy now, Sonny Burch is still alive.

Captain Marvel: Yon-Rogg and the Supreme Intelligence are still alive.

Avengers 4: Thanos and his Black Order are dead.

So while some really promising villains (Killmonger, for ex) are dead, it’s not as big an issue as people think and there are TONS of villains they haven’t used yet.

Marvel’s fourth stage of movies--- what I agree with and what I’d replace. (part 3)

Next on the schedule, is a new Black Panther movie.  I think given the untimely death of Chadwick Boseman, the world needs a new Black Panther film starring his movie sister Shuri (Lettitia Wright) where Shuri has to deal with the sudden death of her brother, the confused line of succession, the return of Ulysses Klaw from the dead just as she is helping her colleague, Reed Richards, build earth’s first interstellar ship. 

The Black Panther was introduced in the fantastic four, so it would be a tip of the hat to introduce the movie FF in a black panther movie.  You can establish that Richards and his crew are high profile and have earned Wakandian sponsorhip and the aid of Shuri (prior to the death of T'Challa), enabling them to transition to the superhero lifestyle fairly easily.  Richards and Shuri could be seen as fast friends.

You can additionally work in other elements. Perhaps Russian spy and ally to Klaw, Ivan Kragoff and his collection of apes are part of the crew --- in Wakanda’s efforts not to be partisan to the US. 

Kragoff could modify the protective shielding Shuri built in order to expose his trained apes to extra-dimensional energies, but due to coding Shuri designed, any intentional shut down of the shields, which Shuri would think only Richards would do, would shut down all the shields, exposing everyone on board.

This would take the guilt borne by Reed Richards and partially shift it on to Shuri giving a little more weight to her coming of age story.

A true FF story would follow on the heels of that. I think you could put it 6 months down the road and the world would have seized on the Fantastic four as earth’s newest protectors.  Then the silver surfer shows up in a movie that should very much parallel FF 48-50.  I think you could squeeze in appearance by Namor and his underseas warriors of Atlantis.  Maybe have Sue beg him for assistance, showing the king’s affection for her.  That gives a great opportunity for a prolonged and violent fight between the Surfer and Namor before the FF and the Surfer saves the day.
