SYNOPSIS: During a military training exercise between U.S. and Japanese naval forces, an alien object crashes to Earth which is the precursor to an invasion. Setting up an energy field that cuts off all contact, the remaining ships must work together to prevent the aliens from calling for reinforcements...

THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: Battleship is a 2012 sci-fi film, and yes, it is based on the classic Hasbro game. Alex Hopper, a down and out loser is forced into the navy by his brother. Some years later, the joint military training exercise between the Japanese and U.S. Navy is interrupted by an alien object falling to Earth. Damaged in the fall, it aims to take control of a nearby satellite array to call it's home planet for reinforcements, unless they are stopped. After colossal losses, Alex is left in command as all communications are cut, and the survivors are left to work together to stop the alien threat. The premise sounds simple enough, although adding in an alien threat to the traditional Battleship game is an odd twist. It should be simple though: battleship is one of the most simple games to pick up and play. Here's where the film makes its big miss: it is unnecessarily complicated in all aspects. The runtime is far too long (just over two hours), there's too many things happening at once, the character's (some of them anyway) attempt to have a story arc, but are often buried beneath everything that is going on. The part of the film which I suppose is meant to resemble the actual game is set up in such a complicated manner so that each side can't see the other, that I couldn't for the life of me explain how it was all working, and just accepted they were playing real-life battleships. Once this scene is over, it just moves on to the next set piece, and repeat ad nauseum until the film is over. There's no real sense of flow to everything that is happening, and just feels like a bunch of ideas thrown together.

There's some attempt to try and make a hero of the main character Hopper, who must quickly grow up when he becomes the most senior commanding officer on the ship. However, this never really materialises in any substantial way. The romance element is also rather shallow, as Alex and his love interest Sam barely interact with each other during the movie, only to set up a problem at the beginning, and resolve it at the end. Rihanna takes a small role where she does very little other than shout a few words to verbalise what is going on, so her appearance isn't too distracting (at least it's not as forced as in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets). There's not much point in delving into the intricacies of the film though, as everything is quickly swept away when the big alien ships and battleships start shooting and blowing each other up. Honestly, this is where the film starts to redeem itself, as you'll quickly forget about all the pointless diversions and attempts at a story as things start to kick off. The effects are fairly decent, and the alien ship designs are pretty cool too. When you switch off from all the extraneous nonsense, the film is entertaining enough for a summer film, but the question remains just how should should you need to detach yourself from logic and rational thought to enjoy something? Battleship certainly pushes the boat out in attempting to see just how much it can get away with without revealing the shaky foundations lurking below the surface.

La Ragione di Stato - " Delitto e castigo"

“Delitto e castigo, l’Italia a Euro 2000” è sicuramente il libro sul calcio più atteso del momento. Dopo averci raccontato i mondiali nostrani ed essersi ingrandito a dismisura su svariate pagine online, ritorna il collettivo calcistico più sardonico ed aggiornato del panorama sportivo italiano. Su carta stampata, però, non è come sui social. Avverti il passare del tempo, ritorni sui tuoi passi, non hai paura dei giudizi degli altri, tieni il tuo ritmo, respiri a seconda dello sforzo e soprattutto non sei spinto da un’innaturale foga a voler dire la tua. I libri ti aiutano a soffermarti sui tuoi ricordi: possiamo risalire tutti a cosa stessimo facendo durante l’estate del 2000, è inutile negarlo. Io, per esempio lavoravo in una sala corse, e guardai tutte le partite dell’Italia dalla mia postazione, dietro ad una lastra di plexiglass, sugli schermi di quell’ambiente poco salubre ma così, drammaticamente, connesso con la realtà in cui mi trovavo.

Chi lavorava, chi studiava, chi aveva la fortuna di essere già in vacanza. Chi era pendolare e chi aveva un bar o una panetteria. Delitto: i rigori contro l’Olanda in semifinale, le parate di Francesco Toldo, i falli di Iuliano e la tracotante giovinezza di Totti, che raggiunse l’apice con la leggendaria “Panenka” all’altissimo portiere olandese Van der Sar. Castigo: il disastro di Del Piero in fase di ripiego e le reti di Wiltord in pieno recupero e Trezeguet al golden goal, per quella finale che sembrava vinta. Fato, destino, karma e meriti. C’è poco Dostoevskij e tanto folklore, in questo libro che si legge tutto d’un fiato, complice una narrazione ficcante e sarcastica che, nonostante il finale noto, lascia, con il trascorrere del tempo di gioco, sempre un barlume di speranza nel lettore. Amato e Chirac in tribuna, noi e i francesi nelle piazze. Pizzul che non ce la fa più, Umberto Bossi che, abbandonata ormai del tutto l’idea federalista, si lascia scappare un “non tiferò per la Francia” a un giornalista che gli chiede di esprimersi sul risultato della finale. Nonostante il troppo scontato il capitolo finale, dedicato presente dei protagonisti di questa storia che sa tanto di “dove sono adesso”, “Delitto e castigo, l’Italia a Euro 2000” è uno dei volumi più commoventi e intimisti mai scritti sul nostro calcio. Dall’inizio alla fine. Non siamo usciti vivi dagli anni ’90, come non siamo riusciti a spazzare un pallone al novantatreesimo minuto di una finale europea. “Ma stavolta c’è qualcosa di diverso. A Napoli dieci anni fa, nel 1990, sono stati gli argentini a portarci contro la nostra volontà all’epilogo dal dischetto. A Pasadena nel 1994 e in Francia nel 1998 le partite si sono stancamente trascinate ai rigori per forza d’inerzia, senza che nessuno abbia fatto nulla o quasi per evitare questo finale. Stavolta è diverso. Stavolta siamo noi che abbiamo deciso, in scienza e coscienza, di portare l’incontro alla lotteria, di buttarla in caciara, di evitare che potesse vincere il più forte. Non dobbiamo avere paura di quanto abbiamo voluto.”

L'Altamura approfitta di un Nardò spaesato e porta a casa tre punti determinanti per la corsa alla Serie C. Il Nardò, dopo un primo tempo giocato sulle ali dell'orgoglio, è calato nella ripresa lasciando spazi invitanti ai biancorossi abili a cogliere l'episodio decisivo.

Piove sul Nardò. Terza sconfitta consecutiva e addio ai sogni di promozione. Eppure la squadra aveva iniziato col piglio giusto. Subito due conclusioni nei primi 10'. Prima un tiro di Ceccarini parato da Fernandes poi una girata al volo di Ciracì alta sopra la traversa. L'Altamura si fa vedere al 35' con un colpo di testa di Saraniti fuori misura. Ultimo sussulto del primo tempo un altro colpo di testa impreciso, stavolta di Ferreira. Finisce il primo tempo sullo 0-0.

Nel secondo tempo si attende il forcing neretino invece esce alla distanza la squadra altamurana che approfitta dei continui errori in impostazione della compagine neretina. Serpeggia il nervosismo tra Guadalupi e compagni e l'Altamura ne approfitta.

Al 50' colpo di testa di Saraniti con palla di poco fuori. Al 55' Logoluso manda fuori d'un soffio da posizione invitante con difesa granata in affanno. Pochi minuti dopo l'episodio decisivo. Sulla sinistra Grande entra in area contrastato da De Giorgi, il n.2 neretino tocca accidentalmente con la mano e l'arbitro, irremovibile, fischia il rigore. Al 70' dalla sinistra Di Benedetto piazza un cross teso che Guadalupi incorna lambendo il palo.

Al 90' la palla-goal più ghiotta è per la testa di Addae. Dammacco pennella una parabola su cui Addae schiaccia di testa mandando fuori. Episodio cruciale che di fatto chiude il match.

L'Altamura si riprende i tre punti persi in casa all'andata e punta decisa verso la C. Per il Nardò continua il periodo nero e la C diventa una chimera.
