My acknowledgment and appreciation of sidewalks as a public space vs my extreme annoyance of trying to nap while a group of dudes sit on a sideways telephone pole outside my window and yell sentences primarily comprised of the word "motherfucker" while smoking so much weed that I can smell it with my window shut.
#I'm across the one lane street from a church also and they'll often gather in groups there#Sometimes with speakers#Folks should have the ability to exist in public and also goddammit#I have my windows closed my fan on next to my head AND earplugs in#Go the fuck away#It's that damn telephone pole getting used as a bench#Which again I am ideologically in favor of#In practice I'm ready to start biting

The enormous tidal wave was barreling to land. You could only watch in horror. Your legs refused to move. For a second, you thought for sure that the wave wasn’t going to hit you. It was an over exaggeration or something. It was one of those things that looked big from far way but small when it got close, right?
Unfortunately, you couldn’t be more wrong.
Buck grabbed Christopher and tossed the little boy over his shoulder, abandoning his crutches and the large brown bear he won at the water gun game. With his free hand, Buck grabbed yours and the two of you sprinted fast and hard down the wooden boardwalk.
Buck was yelling at other people to run, move out of the way, find shelter. Your voice refused to say anything. You couldn’t think of anything.
‘Incoming flood let’s go!” someone shouted. Was it Buck? Was it a police officer? You couldn’t make heads or tails of what was happening. Your hand gripped Buck’s tightly, refusing to let go for any reason as the two of you tried to seek out higher ground. Christopher was pulling the two of you behind, which wasn’t his fault, but you were running out of time.
Buck found an abandoned game in the center of the pier where people were running pass called Baseball Toss. It was essentially an open wooden box, reminding you of a small boxing ring. It had tall walls which might work for now. You couldn’t be sure.
Buck set Christopher inside the game behind the wall and turned back to the giant wave that was now blocking out the sun and inching closer to land by the second. He was leaning against you, his breath heavy and ragged, his eyes wide with fear and worry. You clung to him for your own safety, but also to let Buck know that you were there with him, and together you two will face whatever was coming.
The water broke through, crashing against the pier and exploding between buildings and windows, taking up whatever space it could find. Buck’s hand held yours even tighter as he turned to look at you.
“Get in!” he said quickly. He helped you over the wooden wall of Baseball Toss and you cowered down next to Christopher. Buck jumped in after you just as the water reached your little shelter, splashing and blasting over the three of you.
You closed your eyes and reached out to Buck, who accepted your hand within seconds. His other arm was blocking Christopher, trying to keep the boy as safe as possible. Despite the raging water above you, the world seemed quiet and still. You didn’t dare open your eyes for any reason and you refused to let go of Buck.
It didn’t work.
The water was powerful and was able to break through the wooden barrier, crashing into you, Buck, and Christopher. Buck’s hand disappeared from yours, and you were sloshed, rattled, tossed, and spun in every direction as the tsunami rolled in. You felt like an out of control ragdoll with only a few threads keeping you together. You scrambled and fought against the current, trying to reach the surface.
Was there a surface? Was there a break in the waves?
Your breath was knocked out as you were thrown about in the water and you struggled to breathe. Every time you tried, salty seawater was pulled in. You were drowning.
You swam somewhere. You couldn’t see under the rough current and the water moving fast but you were able to find something, what was it? A telephone pole? Whatever it was, it was tall enough to hang onto and climb. Using your last few precious breaths, you did just that.
You climbed and climbed until every single limb was begging for a break, aching with hot and sore muscles all over.
The water was rolling below you. You looked around in sheer panic, hoping to see someone, anyone, that was able to survive. Where was Buck? Actually wait… where was Christopher?
That sinking feeling of fear, anxiety, dread, horror, distress, and every other combination, pulled through you as you tried not to think the worst. Thankfully, it disappeared. You heard Buck shouting over the roaring waves, looking for Christopher. He must be nearby if you heard him.
You turned around and there he was, clinging to a string of lights.
“Chris! Just stay there, I’m coming!” Buck shouted hard.
You tried to call him, but he didn’t see you. His back was turned to you and he couldn’t hear you against the current. Buck let go of the string of lights and started traveling at a wildly insane speed further inland, and you mentally cursed yourself. You knew what you had to do but you didn’t want to do it.
You mustered up as much courage as you could find, which wasn’t much to begin with, and you jumped into the water. The current was strong and pulling you in different directions as you rode the wave behind Buck. Swimming hard, you saw Christopher clinging to a pole, much like you were. And Buck was on his way to him.
Come on, Buck.
And…
He missed.
The current was too strong and pulled Buck, who was reaching out for Christopher but the distance between them was growing.
“Stay there!” Buck said as he fought like hell to swim against the current, to fight and reach for the boy. It was no use. He found a good spot full of items floating on the water and he clung to something, you couldn’t tell what, just as Christopher slipped from the pole and disappeared under the water.
“Christopher!” you screamed with whatever you had left. Your throat burned and ached, your muscles begging for a break, but you didn’t stop.
Buck heard you. He was looking for Christopher in the water, but he glanced just a second to see if he could find you. Taking a deep breath, the ex-firefighter dove into the water, which was something you would not have done given the circumstances, and you swirled and paddled as close to the area as you can.
Buck emerged, out of breath, holding Christopher in his arms and hugging the boy tightly. You wanted to cry from relief and for some reason, the waves seemed calmer now. You weren’t struggling to swim so hard and so fast, and you took a break, letting the current guide you. You were following Buck and Christopher and you didn’t dare blink for fear of losing sight of them.
Buck found a firetruck in the water, mostly submerged. He tossed Christopher on the roof of the vehicle and turned his gaze to find you.
“Y/N!” he shouted. Relief flashed in his eyes.
He spotted you easily enough and held onto the firetruck with one hand while reaching out for yours. Learning the mistake, he made with Christopher earlier, he was able to adjust his angle and grab your hand, pulling you toward the truck. Your back smashed into the headlight and you gasped in pain, but it passed from all the adrenaline. You put a foot on the driver side window and climbed up onto the truck, with Buck following behind.
The two of you collapsed against the metal roof of the truck, gasping and heaving for breaths. The water was rushing around you but calmer. The biggest part of the wave was done and all that was left was the flood.
“Definitely not the first date I imagined,” you said in between breaths for air. You sat up slightly and winced in pain. There was going to be a bruise on your back from the headlight, but you couldn’t worry about that right now.
Buck turned to look at you and he let out a small laugh.
“I’m full of surprises,” he said, and you couldn’t help but grin.
Your body needed rest and you laid back down, your breath slowly catching itself. Buck was next to you, glancing over at Christopher to see if the boy was okay. He seemed to be and when Buck wasn’t worried about him anymore, he turned his head to face you.
Your hand slowly crept off to the side, getting closer to Buck’s. Your pinky brushed over the back of his hand, mimicking what he had done earlier on the bench, before all of this happened. You were expecting Buck to just link his pinky through yours, but he grabbed your hand. His fingers intertwined with yours and he held on with a squeeze.
You felt your heart flutter again, just like before. Remember when you were questioning if you had a crush on Evan Buckley or not? Turns out, you do.
He was looking at you with his beautiful, light eyes. He was smiling. If it weren’t for the natural disaster that was occurring around you, this would be a nice moment. But reality has a funny way of interjecting and Buck slowly sat up and crawled his way over to Christopher. His hand slipped out of yours and for a moment, you felt cold and empty. Damn you, Evan Buckley.
It was probably best to sit up anyway. Should something happen, you and Buck needed to be able to see around you and not above you. You sat too, ignoring the throbbing pain in your back.
“You good, Chris?” Buck asked the little boy.
“Yep. I took surfing lessons,” Christopher said with a laugh.
“Well, maybe you can teach me,” Buck said, and he looked over at you, “and maybe Nurse Y/N too.”
With a free hand, the ex-firefighter reached out to you and you grabbed it. He pulled you in and you sat next to him, your arm twisted around his and tangling your fingers with his own. Hello, muscles.
Wait, wait, wait, now is not the time for this, get it together Y/N.
Buck let out a sigh, probably from the relief that both you and Christopher were okay. Water still lapped around the firetruck, but it was nowhere near like earlier. It didn’t seem to be rising but it didn’t seem to be receding either.
For now, you were safe. And so were Christopher and Buck. That was all you could ask for. The worst was over.
Right?

There wasn't any going out to look at the stars. Not when it was raining hard enough to turn the city to a blur. No problem, though. Virote was fine being draped over Adam in bed, wearing a silk slip that barely had a hold on his body. It was a movie night and Chungking Express was one of his favorite films, but he couldn't keep his eyes off Adam. Couldn't keep his arms from around him ❝I like you... So much,❞ he said. ❝I daydream about you. Morningdream about you. Eveningdream about you.❞
Morning Dreams
Vi and Adam
Too much weight today, Adam decided. Too much weight, too many reps, too long a run. Some combination of all three impounded upon a week of too much. The second work-out in the afternoon with the extra dose of cardio totally blew him out. After a strong shot of whiskey, Adam was physically, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, religiously, personally, dead to the world. An ache settled in the base of his shoulders. Spread through his hips and thighs, then bottomed-out in his feet. Even his toes hurt. A hot shower dispersed some of the pain but failed to unravel the knot. Like Adam was a clockwork toy wound-up a little too tight. When he awoke in the morning the worst would come to reckon. Rolling-out of bed, he’d grumble with regret, and yet he still wouldn’t miss a set. Eat chicken for breakfast like he was supposed to and set out for a run. Adam wouldn’t take off the pounds from the bar. He wouldn’t shorten his distance. Couldn’t say why. Adam was training. Couldn’t say for what. Just training, pushing limits, getting faster, getting stronger, getting leaner, and maybe a little meaner. Less body fat, more muscle, and it would all work, for something.
Something that he was working for.
Because as fast as Adam was now, the champion was faster.
Adam grunted, a low noise of acknowledgement situated deep in his chest. He shifted and dug his elbows into the mattress. The mountain of pillows piled behind his back and shoulders susurrate as he leveraged himself up. Adam grew-up on old box springs but Vi lived in style and on comfy beds. Which did nothing for motivating Adam. Rain pattered against the roof and streaked the windows. Shadows flickered on the far wall. The movie played on, ignored, on the silver screen. A succession of colors and images, blurred by his heavy eyes. It was the film Vi liked so much--they’d see it again, at some point. Hopefully, Vi didn’t want a plot synopsis later. Adam yawned and he splayed his hand against Vi’s back. Thin arms wrapped around his mid-section with shocking strength. Vice grips of two-fifty pound men were weaker than Vi’s hold. There was no thinking about going anywhere or doing anything. Which was fine, perfectly fine. Even if Adam’s heart ticked with thoughts that were not present in his current exhaustion. He dipped his chin and pressed his nose against Vi’s hair. Smelled shampoo and flowers, something sweet, fruity, tangled with the natural musk of oils, sweat, and people smell.
“What about night dreams?” He murmured. “Twilight dreams, dawn dreams, Midday Dreams, uh, shit, high noon dreams.” Kinda made him think of like, an old Western stand-off where instead of drawing weapons, the combatants had to imagine up something creative first. Which was an idea so dumb he found it funny. Adam chuckled, “You must have boring dreams if I’m running through ‘em, Vi.”
The other night, Adam had a dream that Ultra Tito got out and he had to spend like three hours looking for his stupid dog. Even put posters up on the telephone poles. Except Adam wasn’t in the plain suburban he called home. Adam was marching through the neighborhood an old friend from grade school lived in. The one where he fell off a bike and skinned his knee to high hell. And also, old Jimmy Valiant was there, providing words of wisdom Adam forgot. Something, something, about taking the recycling out. Shit, he should call Jimmy-- and take the recycling out. Adam was having dreams about the fossil that trained him, recycling, and his dog. Or, maybe it counted that his thoughts were drifting a little too often to movie night with Vi. When he was in the middle of dead lifts and bench presses. Damn inconvenient ‘cause he kept losing count. And he wasn’t fixating on the cinema.
Adam played his fingers through Vi’s hair. Black locks like silk, iridescent, refracting pink, blue, red, from the TV screen. Vi, warm and draped over his chest. In retrospect, Adam had no clue how he got here. It kinda happened like it was supposed to. Which was crazy because Adam had no clue where he was supposed to be or even doing. Stuck on this Island of his own making, all bridges burnt. Yet, here was Vi, who arrived by some miraculous and confounding design, draped across his chest like he kinda belonged there. Actually, Vi’s chest now, property of Vi. Like, seriously, how the hell did Vi get here? Adam slid back down against the pillows, sore body protesting even the slightest muscle twitch. He used his hands to adjust Vi’s weight so he could breath easier and then closed his eyes. A couple wiggles and Adam was well burrowed in the pillows.
“We should have... grits, in the morning,” Adam muttered. Not apart of his diet but whatever, cheat day came like once a month and he was feeling homesick. Make ‘em with milk and salt and black pepper. “With, bacon.”
Adam had the feint hope, as he drifted asleep, that he dreamed of bacon. Or Vi, who was definitely better than bacon. Not titles he’d never win or oceans to broad to build bridges.
#sailorvinus#‘The Hangman’ || Adam: IC#‘Deals with God’ || Adam: Verse#‘Star Signs’ || Vi and Adam#grits with bacon--#may be MY breakfast tomorrow#LIke Vi is better than bacon#but not by much#but that's only because Bacon is So Good#Like it's stiff competition#I feel like Vi would sell Adam for#like#bi-tua juice#so it's fair right

Eagle!Scott
When @soniabigcheese mentioned Eagle!Scott I wondered what kind of situations it would be useful in, and this is the one that popped into my head. Sorry it’s taken a long time to get round to writing it I’ve had so many other posts wanting to be written first. Enjoy!
****
The local fair was big, nowhere near state fair big, but people came from all around to visit it. Scott and his brothers had no end of choice in food. Sure, they'd had their fair share of sweet treats, but even Gordon and Alan had eaten plenty of the novelty savoury foods that were on offer. Then there were the fairground rides. They'd been on so many he was surprised someone hadn't been sick! John didn't go on all the rides, but Scott knew he was enjoying himself, despite the crowd.
Alan and Gordon ran head again and Scott sighed. Dad had left him in charge, though there was a security detail following them, because they were Tracy's after all, but the responsibility of not losing his siblings weighed down on Scott's shoulders. Thankfully, Virgil and John were dependable and together they had managed keep the youngest two in sight.
So far, they'd done a few rollercoasters and Virgil had managed to win a stuffed dolphin on a game, which he'd gifted to Gordon, but ended up carrying himself. They had wandered through some of the craft and small business stalls, which had bored the youngest, but Virgil had enjoyed chatting to some of the artists about their work. Scott had taken business cards of some local companies that he thought matched Tracy Industries ethos and might want to be involved with or support. The next ride on the list was the waltzers, which John was adamant on missing out on.
"Consider it space training!" Scott joked, knowing too well that John would be sick if he sat with Alan or Gordon. "You can sit with me and we spin as little or much as you want.”
A clear sharp 'No' from John and that was the end of it. Scott had tried. Instead he handed John his rucksack and Virgil handed him the dolphin and they joined the queue. When they clambered onto the ride, Scott made sure to wave a John. Virgil and Gorgon shared a cart while Scott had Alan with him. Gordon and Alan had a spinning contest and cheered and cheered as they made the carts go faster and faster in circles. Even with the minimal experience he'd had in a stunt plane, Scott's stomach churned, and he struggled to walk in a straight line afterwards. Alan and Gordon argued about who had spun faster until Scott threw up, forcing Gordon to admit defeat to Alan as Virgil seemed unscathed by the ride. Virgil rubbed his back as he crouched in a corner, handing a bottle of water to him so he could swill out his mouth. Scott gingerly stood up.
"I think that second corndog was a bad idea." Scott said as he turned to spy the other three, hanging around a picnic table. Scott and Virgil headed over as John sat down, dolphin still held awkwardly in his arms.
"I need to head the bathroom, then we can head down the next row of crafts stalls." Virgil announced and a small groan came from Alan. Scott plonked himself down opposite John, head in his hands as he waited for his stomach to settle. He sat there, taking deep breaths, as they waited for Virgil to return. His stomach slowly started to calm down.
"Who's got eyes on the Terrible Two?" Virgil asked on his return and looking between John and Scott. Scott looked up at Virgil. Scott gawked as he realised that he hadn't had his eyes in the youngest Tracys for the entire time he'd been sitting down. A frantic look around confirmed that they had lost sight of them. They started calling out, staying close to each other and in the area around the picnic tables. After a scout of the nearby area, the boys regrouped at the last place they'd seen their siblings and sat around the bench. Fear and dread filled Scott, but he tried to stay calm, his still unsettled stomach churning slightly. He slipped his phone from his pocket and called the security detail supervisor.
"Hey, you guys have eyes in Alan and Gordon, right?" Scott tried to keep the worry out of his voice.
"Negative." The steady even tone of the supervisor did nothing to make Scott feel calm. How could they have let them slip!? They were kids. It was there job to keep them safe!
"Stay with your other brothers and stay where you are. I have eyes on you three and I have men looking for the youngest two."
Anger and frustration filled Scott. He was disappointed in himself for losing his brothers but was even more annoyed that the people paid to protect them had too. He continued to scan the crowd just in case. They sat nervously, and after ten minutes of waiting Scott called the supervisor for an update. They were still lost. After another ten minutes and another negative from the controller, Scott was getting angsty. He looked at his brothers, both of which were starting to look worried. It was getting to the point that Dad might have to be called. They waited another ten minutes and still no sighting of Gordon and Alan. Damn it! Scott thought.
"There's one more thing we should try before we call Dad, but we need to ditch our eyes."
Virgil and John looked at each other, their shocked expressions a mirror of the other.
"You can't be serious, Scott!" John exclaimed, "You can't do that here, there's too many people."
"I know the risks, but with a bird's eye view and I might be able to find them. I can easily scout the whole fair from the sky, and once I've spotted them, I'll lead you two to them, then we just need to find a safe place for me to transform."
His brothers looked at each other and sighed. They really didn't want to get dad involved, but the security detail wasn't anywhere near finding Alan and Gordon. They all felt the fear that they may have been kidnapped.
"Fine. I'll come with you and grab your clothes. Once you've found them land on that telephone pole and we'll follow you." Virgil sighed and stood. Scott headed to the men's, though instead of going in them he snuck behind the structure. They moved far enough down to be well hidden from the public. Scott pulled off his shirt and slipped out his shoes and jeans. He shivered slightly and hesitated before he pulled down his boxers, baring all to his brother. He sighed, focused and felt his body morph. His arms became great wings and it always felt strange when he sprouted his tail feathers. Virgil bent down, held out his arm and allowed Scott to step up. There wasn't enough room for him to take off from the ground.
"Carefully with those claws, Scott. I'm fed up of having to explain away the scratches. I might have to take John into class to prove we have a cat!"
Scott squawked at his brother. He really couldn't help squeezing hard, it always took a moment to get used to being a bird. Virgil stepped up the back steps of one of the food trailers which was parked by the toilets. They were still hidden from crowd and Virgil raised his arm up toward the roof. Scott hopped off and onto the roof with a wobble.
"You really aren't that graceful, are you?" A voice came from below. Scott was tempted to give Virgil a bit of 'luck', but his brother knew better and was now standing out of reach.
Scott looked up at the sky and spread his large brown wings. The wind ruffled his feathers and the urge to fly filled him. A few steps and wing beats and he was in the air. He took a moment to enjoy the sensation as he reached the right height. Once there he looked over the fair, he could already see people pointing and he had a feeling he'd be in the local papers, but it had to be done. He made a mental map of the fair and started a systematic search. He used the wind when he could, so he could glide over the fair. He followed the paths below, using his excellent bird vision to search the crowds for his brothers. It didn't take long until he spotted them, queuing for a rollercoaster that they had already been on, candyfloss and waffles in their hands. Relief and annoyance filled Scott as he curved back towards John and Virgil and perched on the indicated telephone pole. His brothers spotted him and stood up. Scott flew as slowly as he could, circling back around occasionally, until he landed on the ticket hut for the rollercoaster Alan and Gordon were about to get on. Virgil gave him the okay, and John headed to the ride's exit to wait for them.
Scott looked around. He was very aware that people were looking at him. He stood out. Changing back was going to harder than he anticipated. Virgil seemed to notice his hesitation and waited. Scott looked around again. They were close to an exit, and if he could, he would have sighed. It would be safest to transform away from the fair. With that he took off and flew to perch on a telephone pole just outside the fair. When Virgil had wondered within metres of the pole he flew off and headed to the back of the grass field, where a corn field started. Virgil knew better than follow his brother 'as the crow flies' so headed down the path towards the field. Scott had flown low over the field so no-one would see him drop down. He transformed on the floor and made his way towards the corner Virgil would approach from, carefully crouching to stay hidden.
"Scott? You in there?" Virgil called.
"I'm here!" Scott called back and waited, moving the corn near him so Virgil had something to look for. Virgil came up to him with a smirk on his face. Yes, this was rather undignified, but his brothers had been found and that was all that mattered to Scott. Scott quickly dressed and headed back to the fair with Virgil. They met up with John and a rather sheepish looking Alan and Gordon, at the exit of the rollercoaster. Scott gave the security a call, who confirmed that they now had eyes on all of them, though he wasn't happy about Scott giving him the slip. Scott pointed out it wouldn't have happened if they'd done their job right.
"Right you two." Scott gave his youngest brothers a glare. "Dad will hear about this. You know that we had to stay together, and you deliberately ran off."
Gordon opened his mouth to say something, but Scott gave him a look and he kept quiet.
"I should take us all home, but I don't want to go as much as you do. So, we'll stay, but only if you stay in sight. Any funny business and we go. Got it?"
A nod from Alan and Gordon and Scott was satisfied enough. They knew he meant it from previous excursions.
"Right, I believe there are some dodgems over that way. Something we can all do together." Scott said, pointing in the correct direction. With smiles all round they headed that way. Virgil stole Gordon's candyfloss bag and nabbed some before throwing it to Scott. Scott grabbed some out of it before holding high above his head, out of Gordon's reach.
"Hey! Give it back! Get your own!" Gordon jumped up trying to reach the bag but falling short.
Scott chuckled. "I think you've had enough sugar already. You need to save room for dinner, I believe Grandma's cooking."
The grimace on Gordon's face was priceless. Alan's wasn't much happier, and Scott definitely wasn't going to tell them that he was in charge of dinner that night. Quick and simple was on the books, if anyone was still hungry.
"After I've smashed you in the dodgems, we had better eat as much as we can." Alan said to his partner in crime.
"Hey, I'm going to be the one bumping into you!" Gordon stated, giving Alan a gentle push.
"Hey! Hey! Hey!" Scott chuckled, "After the stunt you two pulled, you'd both better be looking out. I've got my eyes set on both of you!"

Rory: "He's still there."
Dean: "What?"
Rory: "Jess. He's still there. I can't believe he's still there."
Dean *sighs*: "Just ignore him."
Rory: "You know, this is a dance marathon. You're not supposed to come and sit and watch, you're supposed to dance. He's just trying to bug me - sitting there right in front of me, staring."
Jess: * literally not even glancing to her direction while reading his book *
Rory: "Jerk."
*Jess and Shane start kissing, not paying any attention to anything going on around them *
Rory: "There they go again! God, I swear, why can't they just get a room? Or forget a room, get a park bench or a door way or even a strategically placed telephone pole would probably suffice. I mean, girls like Shane, what is it with them? Don't they see what they look like? I know they have mirrors."
Jess: "Hey, you're talking about me?"
Rory: "No."
Jess: "I heard you mention Shane."
Rory: "Shane isn't you."
Jess: "Shane concerns me."
Rory: "Shane concerns me too and all woman, for that matter."
Jess: "You got a problem here?"
Rory: "Nope, just a little sick seeing the two of you sitting there, if you're not going to participate, then why won't you just leave?"
Shane: "That works for me, let's go."
Jess: "No."
Rory: "Why not?"
Jess: "Because I'm not ready to go."
Rory: "Oh really?"
Jess: "Yes, really. I'm gonna sit here as long as I like and I'm gonna do whatever I like and if you don't like it then just ignore me and pay attention to your boyfriend."
Dean: "Sorry, she can't. I'm not her boyfriend anymore."
Rory: "What?"
Dean: "You know, I tried to ignore this. I really did, but I don't know what the hell I was thinking."
Rory: "What are you talking about?"
Dean: "You don't wanna be with me, Rory."
Rory: "Yes, I do."
Dean: "Oh please, you've been into him since he got to town and I've been spending weeks, months actually, trying to convince myself that it wasn't true, that everything was fine between us, but now I know that I was an idiot. You're into him and he's into you and Shane, who by the way should be listening to this, because it's so damn obvious."
Rory: "What's so obvious? What did I do?"
Dean: "Everyone can see it, Rory. Everyone. And I'm tired, but I'm over it. So go ahead. Go. Be together. There's nothing standing in your way now, 'cause I'm out."

Chasing Phantoms ~ Prologue
It was not meant to be.
A Mother clutched her month-old daughter close. The ship shook, fire danced in the corner of her eye. Outside, a dark figure loomed. Another ship, the attacker, raining bolts down on its prey.
Oh the life they had planned. The love, happiness… The hard times and anger, sadness. All of it they were prepared to face together, forever. But not this. Never this.
The child she held in her arms cried, either from the jostling of her mother’s running, or the loud, terrifying sounds of battle that engulfed the ship whole. Soon, soon they could escape.
The woman felt terrible. Torn between the men and women of the crew that had helped her so much, the urge to stay and fight for them like they were for her… or her daughter, her Star, and the life she would surely have if she took an escape pod and ran.
The Captain knew what choice she would make, the crew knew. No one held it against her, even as she rushed away, no time spared for goodbyes. He only looked at her, stoic as always, nodding once. She smiled grimly, the first hit rocking their ship on its axis. She ran. The Captain turned and started barking battle orders. That was the last she ever saw of them, the valiant crew and their leader.
It was not meant to be.
It was hot as hell on this planet, the humidity in air stuck to the skin, only adding to the sweat that formed over faces and arms- for the humans anyway. Men and women alike wore sandals as they walked down solar-paneled sidewalks. Bicycles casually rolled past on the sidewalk separate from the pedestrian path. Every few feet the solar-panels displayed the image of a figure walking on the appropriate lane, and little bike signals on the bike path.
Leafy, flowering vines grew up telephone poles and hanging baskets dropped down within reaching distance, most full of small pitcher plants to help control the insect population. Although the wild variety smelled like rotting flesh, these small domestic ones smelled like overly ripe fruit. Edible plants and berry bushes hung down as well, such as ripe red strawberries, plump peaches, juicy oranges and many others, both from different planets and native to Linus.
Natural bridges went over highways for both human and fauna safety alike. Every block had a shaded solar charging port surrounded by benches, walkways that led to the beaches, bicycle racks and parking lots. The skyscrapers in the distance grew with greenery, bearing a strong resemblances to the massive forests surrounding most of the coastal capital.
The community, whether native or not, enjoyed this planet’s climate immensely… however the foreign General felt his sweat squelch in his thick military boots and under his formal uniform. The locals merely wore bikinis and shorts, with only the rare few daring to cover up with sundresses and tank tops. He had only been here for barely half a Standard Galactic Day, and already he hated it with determined vehemence.
The man stopped under some shade, both to catch his breath and check in with Head Quarters. Taking his communicator off the clip on his coat, he clicked it to the correct signal.
“General reporting, Sir come in, Sir.” The man states, pressing the receiver of the little device, all the while shaking sand out of the speakers despite it not having been exposed to the beaches at all.
“Oh hun, always so uptight and formal… you couldn’t just lay your head back and relax for the day could you…” An effeminate voice chimed through static from the other end. One could just imagine him in his Cat’s eye sunglasses, filing his nails. The General fought back a cringe of disgust.
“They didn’t know about the mineral… they don’t apparently use much mining resources… pride themselves on being green, having low impacts on the environment and all that… A biologist I found along the shore did not suitably help… he was more concerned with some species of cat beasts and a slug…”
“Ah yes….” The man on the other end of the line hummed. “I heard about those cuties. I think I may have seen one earlier today… maybe two if wolves in sheep’s clothing count. Very adorable little things, really. It makes me want one…” he hummed in a slight airy manner, with noticeable emphasis on the want.
“Sir, I do not think it a wise course of action…”
However within moments he was walking down the sidewalk to visit the flea markets, casting cold, grey eyes along colourful stalls that seemed to sell everything on this planet. From exotic fruit and meat, to equipment for ships, Earth antiques, and every species imaginable living on Linus, which seemed as good a candidate for ‘pet’ you could get, in as loose a sense of the word as possible.
He decided upon a particularly dedicated looking vendor, which was really just a collection of small play gates and cages full of animals. The first creature to greet him was a many-eyed reptilian-looking cat with 6 arms. It started growling- the man assumed- for it made a repeating, aggressive ticking sound combined with a series of rattling snarls. Eventually it turned to lay contentedly under a heat lamp. Then, he saw an odd looking snake whose eyes seemed to jut out like a chameleon’s and whose tail wrapped around a branch like it had a mind of its own. A certain scaly thing even vaguely resembled a dragon. But one species in particular caught his eye. If one had lived on Earth, in its golden age, one would compare it to a cute, chubby baby otter. To the people of Linus, they were Mimics. And, to the people who knew what they were capable of, limitless sources of potential.
The stern General was, however, hoping he wouldn’t have to go through with this tomfoolery.
Approaching the manager, or owner of sorts, he cleared his throat and presented his dilemma.
“I need a pet for someone… a Service Dog like animal. Something smart. Something vicious.” He said, with a glint in his eye.
“Ah, is it perhaps for that special lady in your life? I mean, it all depends on what you want smart for exactly…” The manager replied, the local Linus lilt colouring his speech as he scrutinized his latest client.
The man grimaced, disgusted by the latest developments. He supposed one could call his Commander a ‘special lady’ alright… special with a helmet maybe.
“You pry too much…” He retorted, in a very smooth, very dangerous tone despite his apparent anger. “I came to ask questions, not to answer them…. I am here for a Mimic.”
The vendor- thought he seemed slightly dumbfounded- laughed heartily. “Pardon my manners, us mainlanders don’t mean to pry as much as we do. Should have just been straight forward- we got a whole litter. I hear even the SDF are starting to use these guys. I do warn ya, they aren’t pets. With ‘em little guys it’s like adopting a kid of your own…”
He motioned to a small group of Mimics, round chubby faces with antenna like whiskers. One seeming to be a small white female, another a large dapple grey, the third a grey with a black back and light underbelly. The fourth, and final one was a small black, and white male, standing just slightly taller than the female.
“That one right there, he’s a smart one I’ll tell ya.” He says pouring some milk into a saucer with a small amount of cat food. By the time the dishes were placed in their pen, the “alpha” Mimics were chittering and hollering loudly. Already they had started to mimic the noises of the animals surrounding them. The small black and white male remained silent as the two others pushed and shoved, snapping at one another for the food.
“Chester, come over here boy.” The puppy, though young, seemed to have a natural aptitude towards this sort of thing. He stood up his hind legs, prancing up and down as if he were a kangaroo jumping in delight before the dish was placed down in front him. Followed by another one for the other two Mimics.
While the two grey males fought over who would drink first, the black puppy stared at them. When the moment was right, he snuck his snout under their chests to stealthily pick dish up carefully in his mouth, all the while pushing the other with his flippers. Once his thievery accomplished, the small male sat by the passive white female, with whom he shared his prize. She pressed up against him, affectionate, but most certainly shy.
Then, suddenly, the black male looked up at the scowling General, their gaze locking. A galaxy of blue ocean waves and worlds of the multi-hued coral beneath seemed to scrutinize the man’s very person- for he had no more soul. They glowed with multitudes of deeper secrets, hidden thoughts he would never see. Perhaps it was intelligence. Or maybe not. Was it, perhaps, something more?
It didn’t take long before the Grey’s realized what had happened and approached. They bristled and snarled, copying all sorts of offended animal calls. The black male, Chester, simply looked at them before growling and making a noise that the man had heard before, upon approaching the stall. The Mimic pup got up on his hind legs and made a noise resembling the roar of one of Linus’ big cats, albeit softer and smaller, babyfied, almost. Now, before the Grey’s, stood an almost perfect replica of the reptilian, six armed cat who slept a few cages over. The male’s siblings retreated in a frenzy, fearfully whining high pitched screeches that made the General want to shoot them. But nevertheless. If his Commander had stated he wanted a pet, he would have his damn pet. And if it was to be, the General would make sure its usefulness would be maximized. He would make damn well sure. And if he was to be stuck with an overgrown, doggish copy-parrot, he would make sure it wasn’t a dumb overgrown, doggish copy-parrot. This would be it.
The man spent the rest of the day carrying an unstable cardboard box, with holes punched in the top, under his arm. Heavily annoyed, very unamused. Little did he know, this was the beginning of 15 years of annoyance and un-amusement.
