Me, writing a one-shot entry for "We Are TroubleD": :)
Me, reading through what I have so far of the first draft: Hm, this sure is a long one...
Me, realizing that I'm already at 7,313 words and I'm not even done writing the thing yet:

I'm sorry but comparing Hide and Yoriko in that way doesn't make sense. I love her and she has her own importance, but she's a side character. She acts normally, and doesn't have weird hints thrown around. We even see her mum in the novels lol. On the other hand, it's very true that Hide's character revolves around Kaneki but, normal human or not, he's been hinted to be plot important at least a few times. Even if he turns out not to be, he still holds some mysteries (his will, the sewers etc)
What I mean is that I wouldn’t consider Hide a side character, like Yoriko, even though he isn’t developed outside of Kaneki and doesn’t have much screentime. Also, Yoriko is mainly there for Touka, but we also see a bit more of her side of things in the novel, and she also has her own story, independent from Touka’s, like her marriage. It’s weird Hide doesn’t have that. Or maybe I expect too much, I mean I’m a bit dissatisfied with Shuu rn. Sorry if I sounded offensive, I didn’t mean to ^^
Well, Yoriko was introduced specifically for the sake of paralleling Hide, so I think it’s fair enough to make that comparison. And I do think Hide is important -  as of :re, I think he’s become Eto’s henchman. The mystery of the sewers is basically just that he didn’t die completely and Aogiri captured him; other than that he was there for the reason he said he was - to let Kaneki eat him so he could survive. Honestly, I think the reason there was so much pre-:re speculation about Hide was mainly due to his popularity rather than legitimate hints. He is unusually intelligent, yes, but I think that’s more of a plot device to allow him entry into Kaneki’s new life when Kaneki goes to great lengths to bar the doors - to keep him involved in the story so that he can serve as the ironic death that completes Kaneki’s tragedy in the first series, and be revealed alive in the second to carry its theme of the revival of hope.
I also don’t agree that Yoriko’s marriage is an independent plotline - the premise is set up in the first place to put Yoriko in the hands of the CCG to serve as a difficult choice for Touka. Both characters serve more as thematic tools to the mains than fully fleshed out characters in their own right, though it’s certainly true that their personalities have been developed further to better serve that purpose, with arcs of their own like smaller gears to turn the larger ones. Besides, we’re definitely going to be seeing Hide again if he is in fact Scarecrow (which is pretty certain imo), so you’ll still get to hear more from him.
As for Shuu, though we haven’t seen much of him in terms of character development in recent arcs, he did have a very lengthy arc devoted to him in the Rose Arc, so I think it’s fair enough to cool it down a bit at this point, so long as we have some arc resolution before the end which is, again, almost certain - and almost certainly involving Chie, his own Hide to some extent.
