darnold is most human , he looks p mcuh normal but he consumes things that should absolutely kill him VXBSB.. hes around 5′7 , i draw him w a square-ish shape language bcs hes intelligent and relatively sensible but round corners cause hes v kind !! i hc he enjoys old-timey fashion so i give him a bowtie & suspenders under his labcoat ! he also gets dimples bc cute.
gordon is p human at first glance but if u look closer he has slightly pointed ears and his canines are a little longer than average. he also has retractable claws like a cat , benreys like wtf didnt you say it was weird that i had claws ? and hes like nah its weird you cant retract them. also its barely noticeable but gordons hair moves veery slightly when hes emotional becayse heehoo. hes around 5′9 and has a relatively wide rectangle silhouette bcs hes hard-working and trustworthy ! post-game he mostly wears comfortable casual clothes like sweaters and knee-lenght shorts. dresses like a dad :^)
coomer mostly looks like a regular friendly old guy , but he has a buncha cybernetics hidden under his clothing bcs of course he does ! the extendo-arms are visibly metallic but his leg enhancements are mostly internal. hes 5′4 and has a v much circular silhouette ! friend-shaped !! he wears kind grandpa clothes.. shorts , hawaiian shirts , vests etc ! and yes he wears crocs <3
forzen is also pretty human-passing in terms of appearence , though he Can and occasionally Does subtly shapeshift.. and she also consumes things that would be so deadly to humans. like motor oil and rocks :) hes seemingly immune to bullets and has fangs but only sometimes. shes 6ft tall and her shape is p much square ! he wears an outfit v similar to his military uniform bc everyone was like dude get some new clothes wtf. so she was like FINE *buys near-identical red beret , fishing vest , huge backpack , camo pants and boots*
tommy.... WAY too tall 2 be human. hes 7′8. taller than gman. his silhouette is very tall thin oval :) round edges again bcs hes kind ! hes lanky but a lot physically stronger than he looks. he also consumes inedible things like computer keyboards. he has fangs , his eyes glow in the dark and he can use sweetvoice to a basic extent ! he also wears suspenders and bowties along w comfy baggy clothes like sweaters & chunky sneakers or crocs ! he also wears a lot of chew jewellery and he loves patterned socks :) he also uses a cane because being SO fucking tall isnt v easy on yr joints ! he uses crutches on worse days.
bubby is. also very tall but nowhere near tommy. hes 6′5 ! he has noticeably very pale skin & neat rows of pointy teeth (altho some are probably chipped). they also have almost-clawed fingers , v pointy shape language with a tall thin rectangular kinda silhouette. theyr not v physically strong most of the time so theyre pretty scrawny. his strength works on cartoon logic tho so he can be strong sometimes if it makes the situation funnier hebfhebr.. in-game he wears p much exactly the scientist uniform w no added stuff , but post-game hes like oh shit ! i casn do what i want now !! and goes out and buys a shitload of leather jackets and chunky shoes and gets so many piercings. awesome. the piercings & studs on their clothes also add pointiness to his design :^) oh and ! they use crutches because spending most of your life suspended in goo isnt very good for your muscles .
gman ! 7′5 so also inhumanly tall. he has pale greyish skin and is pretty clearly not human , he also has fangs & his eyes glow perpetually he Cannot Turn That Off. he doesnt necessarily eat inedible stuff but he has uncharacteristic reactions to foods , like alcohol doesny affect him at all but he drinks a pint of sparkling water and wakes up in a hollowed out tree stump in the woods at 4am 2 miles from his house. he can also teleport , make himself invisible for a limited time , levitate , and shapeshift ! he has a tall thin rectangular silhouette similar to bubby , but a little wider bcs hes more imposing & strong. when hes not in one of his 50 identical suits , he wears dad clothes also; hawaiian shirts & shorts and of course... socks & sandals.
finally benrey ! he4s so small. simply small as fuck. hes generally around 4′4 , but he doesnt really have a consistent height bcs hes constantly shapeshifting because he can. they also shift their weight occasionally and their hairstyle is never consistent at all. they have pale greyish skin , the face shadow ofc is permanent as are their eyebags , and he also just . doesnt have a nose. he can smell he just doesnt have one. probably has no ears either. he has a round silhouette but sharp uneven teeth & generally p messy hair , cause hes unassuming and laid back but Can fuck u up if he wants to. which generally they dont bcs they dont actually like being in physical conflict much at all. they use a wheelchair post-canon bcs dying does that to u <3 he doesnt mind tho , he and tommy deck it the fuck OUT w stickers. he wears casual clothes like hoodies and sweatpants , and has a seemingly endless hat collection... chullos , helmets , ball caps , beanies , you name it ! i usually draw them with a specific hat based on the situation , like im doing an animatic of the callmecarson spelling bee and benrey has a ball cap that says “im a keeper” with a pic of a bee on it. awesome

Okay so we’re going to open with the fact that while Obsidian has at least one person on staff who understands armor, literally nobody understands clothing, especially historical clothing, and though they stumbled into something... acceptable in two and a half cases(1), literally everything else they’ve produced on the subject is garbage.
So what’s the most garbage cultural garb in Eora? I’m going to shock you, despite my complaining on the affront that is the Dyrwood, it’s actually the Vailians. They’re supposedly primarily metalsmiths and textile traders, (iirc Obsidian called Venice and the Phoenicians as the major guiding influences), with really strong textual aesthetic sensibilities, and yet they’re all wearing drab closefitting garments with neither wild shaping nor excess fabric, mostly in deeply boring greys. It’s like... bad period piece Renaissance Venetians, but make it 90s haute couture. It is *painfully* bad. Deadfire improves, a little bit, but these are supposedly the most baroque bitches around, I should be seeing vivid colors (especially in reds and blues and purples), rich blacks, and enough spare fabric to drown a medium sized child. Also lace. A famous vineyard’s worth of lace. At least blackwork, come on Obsidian they look cheap.
Based on Pallegina’s armor, I should also be seeing a ‘pigeon breast’ silhouette on literally everyone, or alternatively low, square cut bodices to show off extremely fancy underwear (and don’t worry, we’ll get to the underwear), and I should be seeing split hose, not pants, if I am seeing hose at all. I will accept pants for exactly two cultures and no more. and the Republics do not apply.(2) Deadfire did them a good turn by introducing brocades but where is the velvet. The silk. The weird hats. The dagged, slashed sleeves to show off the fact you’re rich enough to wear an overdress, an underdress, and then your underwear’s fancy as hell too. Everybody on the south-eastern half of the Eastern reach is wearing, at minimum, a chemise, hose, and if you’ve got boobs some sort of stays to keep said boobs put, and pockets, before you even get to their outerwear.and just like today, everybody wants pretty underwear. Embroidered cuffs and collars, clocked hose, lace on everything, if you’re rich, blackwork if you aren’t, extremely beautiful pockets, the works. The Republics, being the rich people with all the fabric, have canonically raised fashion to an art form, so they should be dripping with extra details, and they should not only be the only people with flat patterning, they should be reveling in that fact. They are not doing any of these things.
The second most garbage cultural garb is, of course, the Dyrwood. Again, I should be seeing lots of color, not necessarily saturated but given their climate and stated food products I can make an educated guess about what dye plants are around, so lots of greens and yellows and rusty-orange reds and (maybe) pale blues, and a billion extremely rich shades of brown and almost-black, mostly plainweave for themselves (they’re shipping out their brocades for the most part), but lots of embroidery again. They can keep the bracers, they’re the only canon-given detail I actually liked (and it plays into a different headcanon re: where the fuck did you get the standing army), but they don’t even get split hose, much less pants. Skirts for everybody! Again, these people are producing all the fabric, and it’s cold(ish), so multiple layers are a thing, as is excess cloth, and if you’re going to do that, you’ll dye your underdress a fun color to contrast with your overdress (which very well might be quartered, too), at the very least. There’s probably a lot of plain trimming, and guards, and they’re coming out of Aedyran fashion so there’s not a lot of shaping but stripes and plaids are probably a thing, and certainly no flat patterning. Think bilaut over later kirtles, with side lacing and belting around the waist for various purposes (like making your boobs stay put, depending on if you’ve got stays or not, or holding up said skirt when you’re working in the fields, to get it out of the way.)(3)
Based on the leather armor you pick up, I should also be seeing the beginnings of a more conical style, moving away from clothes you just drop over your head into separate skirts and bodices (for everybody, not just women), which still probably lace up the front or (more commonly) the sides. (There’s an argument to be made that kilts are a thing, coming out of Eir Glanfath, but it’s probably more of a western than an eastern thing, and frankly I’m not sold, get back to me on this.) Also, going back to my dearly cherished ring lace headcanon, pretty much everyone wears extremely beautiful knit lace shawls (but not trim, and not non-knit), because even if you’re selling all the really nice stuff you’ve still got piles and piles of little apprentices practicing their trade, and somebody’s got to wear it.
Unfortunately I just don’t have enough information about Glanfathians to say anything other than what they’re wearing is also probably garbage, and fashion is probably a hugely tribe-specific thing. More nomadic tribes probably don’t wear many wovens, probably saving what cloth they make or trade for for things like belts and blankets and carrying bags, but again, it should all be extremely colorful. You’ll see more shaping and piecework here, because leather does not appear in neat rectangles the way cloth does, and if you’ve already got that curve you might as well use it, lots of fur, mostly for warmth but also as decoration, and we might see Dyrwodian fashion influences with the more eastern tribes, depending on the mystery of what’s going down politically at that border and whether or not those tribes are more or less nomadic.
Ixmitl gets an honorable mention for having the most color and also horses, and so the pants are acceptable, but I’d like to see more color and more embellishment. And also more information. Rauatai gets an honorable mention for having actually reasonable rectangular construction on everything (clearly an accident but I’ll take it) and again, some color. Aedyr gets an honorable mention for having some logic put into it’s creation, even if that logic isn’t extended out to its colonies like it should be, and even if what we see in game makes it clear Obsidian doesn’t actually understand how things like chitons work.
Engwith gets all the honorable mentions for somehow being the most internally consistent culture as far as art and fashion go, despite 90% of that art and fashion being extremely hard to see frescoes, and the rest of it being Thaos. Yeah it’s basically a straight copy off Sumer but you know what? That just means it works.
At some point in the distant future I may update this with illustrations of canon v. what we reasonably should be seeing, but right now is not that time.
1: Whoever Obsidian picked up for Tyranny clearly stayed on (Tyranny’s clothing was uniformly pretty great, even if it had the same bra problem), and they’re the only person with half a clue, which is why the Huana look as good as they do. Pillars gets half a point for Aedyr, Iximtl, and hilariously enough Engwith, for having reasonable starting points, and Deadfire should get another half point for Rautai, but that picture of Maia exists and it is such an affront they lost it again.
2: Ixmitl and the various groups of the White that Wends can have pants, the first because they’re canonically horse people, and that’s what pants are for. The White doesn’t actually get pants, per se, they’re fairly clearly inspired variously by the Inuit and the Vikings, so they have separate undergarments we would call pants in order to help keep warm, but it counts for this. Nobody else gets pants.
3: Just for the record, this is also where Raedceras should be, fashion-wise, but we have huge amounts of nothing when it comes to non-priest everyday wear so I can’t really talk about. My logic still stands, plus they’re even less likely to know about flat patterning, but, y’know.

Location: Summerveld, KwaZulu Natal North Coast, South Africa
Summerveld is located within the lush rolling hills of Shongweni, situated half an hour inland from the port city of Durban, South Africa.
This tight knit horse racing and show jumping community is home to the OBAN Estate, a contemporary residence and equestrian facility named after the Scottish seaside town from where the owner’s family originates.
The point of entry to this 4 hectare (430000 ft²) site involves driving through a raw concrete and corten gatehouse and along a curved, tree lined avenue. This provides an opportunity to catch obscured rhythmic glimpses of the home through evenly spaced Plane trees. Emerging from this leafy tunnel of dappled light, and passing under a low slung cantilevered canopy that opens up into an expansive parking court, signals the arrival at the private residence.
This modern home with brutalist undertones expressed in the structural design, takes on a simple arrangement of monolithic linear forms that project out across the vast manicured lawn and gently sloping paddocks, whilst still managing to position itself comfortably amongst the existing mature trees.
Approaching the home, an organic shaped concrete wall weaves its way above a shallow reflective pond, enthusiastically inviting visitors over a small bridge and through the front door.
On entering the home, the view of the distant horizon vista through an expansive unobstructed 10m (33 ft) opening is simply breathtaking. Simultaneously, the prominent V-column, the ‘googie’ styled floating staircase, and the triangulated coffer slab double volume ceiling, set the tone for what lies ahead.
The open plan kitchen, lounge and dining room area leads onto a fully equipped, covered outdoor living and entertainment area, swimming pool, and 24m (80 feet) long koi pond. A guest suite and combination study/lounge/gym area make up the remaining ground floor spaces.
Whilst functioning as the means to transition floor levels, the feature staircase offers a sculptural backdrop to the double volume space that leads up to the mezzanine landing.
Arriving at the upper section gallery area of the double volume, there is a notable change of atmosphere. The filtered light moving through the wall of vertical screens, as well as a series of 9 symmetrically formationed triangular skylights, collectively create an ethereal and uplifting experience, which always tempts a moment of contemplation.This floor level is made up of two twin suites and a master suite that includes a private lounge/reading area. All the suites are linked by a 28m (92 ft) floor to ceiling glazed passage that can be completely opened up to allow for natural cross ventilating breezes during the humid summer months.
The equestrian component adjacent to the home consists of stables, an oval shaped office, complete with private lounge and bathroom, a 2400m2 (26000 ft²) open showjumping arena surface, arena storage, workshops, and public parking for visitors cars and horse trailers.
Whilst this light weight building departs from the modernist architectural language of the private residence, the shape of the building reinforces the linear form originating from the home.
This steel and sheeted structure houses all the equestrian functions under a single mono-pitch roof, with angular sheeted walls either wrapping downwards, or opening upwards depending on the relative function that occurs within.
In some areas the wrap down is dissolved into horizontal louvre elements that facilitate the sensible balance of natural light and solar control, particularly in the area of the stables. In addition, the early morning and late afternoon shadow patterns generated by the louvres bring a warmth and texture to the robust surface areas.
The design framework for both components of the project was established in the resolution of two fundamental challenges: The first being from a site planning aspect. The residential and equestrian components had to be functionally defined according to their respective private and public usage, whilst at the same time achieving the aesthetic of a single integrated development.
The second being from an architectural aspect. The introduction of a bold modernist structure within a rustic country environment demanded a rigorous design approach. The process pursued an outcome that would present buildings confident in their demeanor, yet respectful of the prominent site that had received them.
Ultimately the aim of this project was driven by a vision to see contemporary architecture, equestrianism, and nature, coalesce into a reality that was inspiring, functional and unique within the context of its spectacular setting

I like this guy’s videos. I think he’s right about a lot of stuff about how the alt-right works and operates.
However, one thing I do NOT like about him is that he seems to see the whole universe (or at least the whole YouTube) as Leftism vs. Fascism, and that one of these is Extreme Goodguy and the other is Extreme Badguy. He doesn’t seem to see moderate viewpoints as stable, and seems to think what matters is which breed of extremism wins. While I agree that Lefty World is probably less scary than Fashy World, as a Problematic Content creator I’m not convinced I’d be much safer in Lefty World, so I just want to note that.

It makes particular sense to me as someone who really used to WANT people to be punished for bad behavior. When I was a wee Fiercelet I used to think some people were conscientious, like me, and some people were lazy or bad or stupid, and that if I was being conscientious, I deserved not only the praise I got for it, but other people deserved shame. It was like, “hey, getting all this homework done and in on time and precisely correct is HARD, even for me. What do you think YOU’RE doing?”
It bothered the hell out of my parents actually, who would constantly tell me not to be so mean to myself or others and try to explain to me what extenuating circumstances were. But I did not like this at all, and I suspect part of why was why I eventually read Ayn Rand. I didn’t like how harsh she was, and the “all women are submissive” thing ticked me off like WHOA, but it captured some of the utter bafflement I felt at other people not doing their duty, and the weird bitterness I felt at them behaving that way while I did.
I didn’t really want the things they seemed to find more pleasant than homework--sex, drugs, sneaking out--so it wasn’t like I thought they were happier than I was. But I felt like they were spitting in everyone else’s face for momentary pleasure and I really didn’t like THEM. I tried to seek out other people who were smart and conscientious because if I didn’t, I’d eventually yell at them for behaving badly and they’d laugh at me and that was a bad scene.
I think this is why I feel so puzzled by “don’t get emotions in your morality, ESPECIALLY NOT THAT EMPATHY THING.” Because I’m pretty sure it was getting emotions mixed up in my morality that got me out of this and made more humans able to stand being around me for more than ten minutes at a clip.
It started with, “okay, she DID DRUGS !!!!!!!!!! and of COURSE that means she must be PUNISH-ED, but um maybe only for like a month or something? maybe we can uh, do Something if she’s self-medicating? cos I mean I hate the idea that she was so weak willed she tried it but mental illness and akrasia MIGHT GO TOGETHER so mumble humble fump.”
Or the first time I heard not just “some women will use coathangers,” but what would drive someone to feel like she should. Why having a rapist’s baby is... too MUCH Duty, and even though the alternative is taking human life and THAT STILL MAKES ME FLINCH WOW UGH can I really, really talk like that’s the same kind of “murderer” as someone who hunts down his ex and shoots her dead for leaving him? Weeeeeell, uh... maybe... no?
And so I rethought that whole thing about punishing people. And now... I don’t know. I don’t think I never want anyone punished. Lots of people do bad things and I get angry at them and I’m pretty sure THAT part’s normal. But I’m leery of who gets to decide, and I’m leery of punishment involving cordoning people off in set aside buildings because as a rule, being cut off from other humans makes you CRAZIER, so that seems like the worst possible way to get you to take responsibility and not do that sort of thing any more, whatever sort of thing it is.
So when people say “don’t use empathy,” it sounds to me like they’re saying “don’t change in the way you did when you got older.” And for one, I don’t know how to change back--I feel like I’d have to unsee something I didn’t see before. But for another, I’m not convinced that if I succeeded I’d be more moral. Less flexible sure?
More moral?
No? I was kind of... mean?
And then:
But if I don’t trust myself to punish AND I don’t trust society to punish, the upshot of that is that a lot of people get normal lives who nonetheless do an above average number of bad things consistently. (Which is the only sensible thing I can think of for “bad person” to mean.) So if I don’t get to take them away from my presence, what it means is I get to take MY PRESENCE away from THEM.
Which I think is why the resistance to certain labels because of stigma makes me feel multiple contradicting ways. Because if I’ve decided not to lock people away, then that implies I have said “Hey society! I take it upon myself to protect myself from people who do more bad than good!”
And once I do that, patterns to match and rules to thumb are helpful, because ain’t no one gonna do it for me, or whisk someone off to Abuser Jail as soon as they start gaslighting me or whatever. So it helps to know “this is the kind of person who tends to do that, and this is what they tend to do, and this is why.”
Which also explains why when people say “don’t talk like that” or “don’t talk about that” it seems threatening or even dangerous. Because if I’ve accepted that the only one responsible for my safety is me, that doing bad things isn’t necessarily summoning some Cosmic Punishment Hammer, then.. I need as much information as I can get about who to be wary around, precisely because I promised everyone that would be enough.

((I don’t think it’s altogether fair or accurate to call depression a “flaw”; it’s a weight that negatively impacts a person’s life to varying degrees. Putting it in the same category of adjectives as being (for example) abusive, corrupt, etc. is not… sending a good message, and I hope that’s not the intended message.
Felix is a man who carries a lot of weight on his soul. He’s lived through a lot, and they are not the sort of experiences you just go through once—he has to live with choices made and the outcomes produced (by himself and others) for the rest of his life.
He struggles with his guilt over his role in the whole ordeal (and the pain it caused himself and others), and some people made it worse by (intentionally or otherwise) seriously messing with his mind. He resents—less than he did years ago, but still every so often—having been forced into a role he never wanted, and punished for doing the right thing.
He’s not as paranoid as he used to be, but he’s well aware that he’s a wanted man in Angara and doesn’t trust people part of/connected to forces that want him dead.
Sometimes, when he’s confronted by how others (mostly Isaac, though also Susa to a much, MUCH lesser degree) are praised in comparison to how much he has lost and continues to be hated or ignored… it makes him frustrated, even bitter. He does make an effort not to let that overpower him, but he did give in to his bitterness directly at one point when someone pushed their luck too far by provoking him (with their blatant lack of empathy and complete disregard for the solemnity of life).
Overall, though, he’s mellowed out significantly over time, so his cynicism, bitterness, insecurity, paranoia, and sense of guilt has greatly diminished and only tends to come up when he’s under substantial stress. He’s also more open to talking to his closest friends about what’s on his mind… but he can still get lost in thought very easily, sometimes even forgetting what he had just been talking about.

I write a lot on this post about self diagnosis, the aspirational notion of sociopathy, sociopathy as wish-fulfilment, and the danger and offence that comes with throwing the term around and applying it to you or anyone else based off some deeper darkness you feel you or someone else has. But things are serious. I want to go into depth, so we really know where we are. It feels ASPD is one of those things that people need, and people hate. But I want to remind you, it’s still a mental illness, and it still comes with pitfalls. We’re not just spending all day languishing in our own seductive power, or having perfect control over every aspect of our lives. We’re not working on Wall Street, devastatingly attractive, hitting every target and charming everyone we meet from the word go. I talk a lot on this blog about the real pain of it, and I hope that this is a place people come for real discussions about the disorder. In that spirit, it’s time for another rundown on what ASPD is and what it is not, and the easiest way to do that is to rely on the criteria in the DSM-V, the diagnostic guidelines that clinicians in the Western world have to follow for this diagnosis to be made. Because that’s how it works, there’s a list of things and if you do the things then you have the thing. If you don’t do the things then you don’t have the things. It’s not as easy as watching Sherlock and admiring Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance, or identifying with other villains in fiction -- they are written for you to empathise with them. The best villain is created with just enough humanity that you want to feel for them, see the good in them, and the purpose of this in good fiction is to make you question yourself, your motivations and your limits. Emily Bronte wrote Heathcliff in such a way that whilst he is motivated by only vengeance, obsession and hate, you want to like him, and you want to rescue him. Feeling that way does not make you a sociopath. It makes you a human being who is responding to art in the way the art hoped you would. So let’s run through. 1. failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest. So this one basically means, you’re committing crimes, disrespecting authority in an outward manner, refusing to accept any kind of dominant law or force, and violating legal boundaries in however way you see fit. It’s not something you switch on and off, nor is it something exclusively motivated by personal gain. It doesn’t mean “I once stole a lipstick from a shop”, it is a pervasive, repeated pattern of behaviour that doesn’t ease off when the motivation disappears. It’s not the same as thinking it. Just because you think that in a certain situation you’d behave psychopathically, it doesn’t mean you are. If your sociopathy or psychopathy depends on a special set of circumstances to function, then it doesn’t exist. 2. deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure So again, this doesn’t mean isolated incidents. It’s not about sometimes talking someone round to something. Psychopaths tend to lie and con, and anecdotally I’ve found that sociopaths do one or the other in excess, mine was always conning. What this meant for me was the conning was the game, and the success of the conning was the goal. If you are only doing this every so often and it has a clear motivation other than just doing it for the sake of it, you are not a sociopath.

There’s many reasons why someone would have no motivation to plan ahead. And the impulsivity we’re talking about here, again, is pervasive. It’s not the impulse to do something slightly out of the ordinary for a change, and whilst addictive behaviours are often comorbid with ASPD, this criterion means that your impulses are ongoing, hard to control, and are causing problems in your life. Impulses may be violent or disruptive, they may come from anger, they might be harmful. The impulse to spend an extra £20 on clothes isn’t a personality disorder. It’s treating yourself, and it’s nice to treat yourself.

It’s not a very well controlled rage. It’s not sensible. It’s not considerate. It’s not clever. So a recent article I read said that sociopaths and psychopaths live with two different kinds of rage: there’s baseline rage, and then rage that has been provoked. This means that naturally, if a situation arises where conflict could exist, we will take it. But it also means, we’re angry as shit all the time anyway. It’s pathetic, I know that, but it’s there. We’re just angry. It’s exhausting. It’s physically tiring, and we would stop it if we could. You can walk away from it, that’s fine. You don’t have to understand it. But this is, for me at least, the cornerstone of ASPD. It’s simmering, endless, impotent rage that stems from a deep held belief that conflict is everywhere, that conflict is safer than no conflict, and that we have to come out on top at all times. No sociopath is sitting there thinking, “I’m sure it’ll work out for the best”, or “I wonder what a morally good person would do?”. We are (see above) impulsive, quick to react, easily provoked, and lacking in empathy. Rage is real. It’s constant, and sharp.

Don’t go to work because you have no respect for your boss and the mere fact they told you to answer to them has spiked that rage again? Maybe you have ASPD.

I’m not going to labour on this one too much but for Christ’s sake, everyone says and does hurtful things from time to time and when we do those things, it makes sense to rationalise it, because that’s a human way to protect yourself, it’s normal. Going out of your way to cause harm, to push people away from you, to watch someone hurt, and to feel extremely justified in that with no room for, “but what if...?” is ASPD. If someone’s pissed you off but you know that arguing with them would make them feel worse, you don’t have ASPD. I’m writing this because I cannot fucking hear it any more. I go to therapy. I am exhausted by myself. Anger has worn me down, I look tired, I have a suspected overactive adrenal gland that my therapist agrees is what happens when you spend your whole life on edge. It’s isolating, we get lonely, we don’t know how to have normal relationships, we’re unable to show the ones we care about that we care, then we trick ourselves into not caring. We make ourselves lonely, we’re in pain. And that’s not to say that if you don’t have ASPD you’re not in pain, but remember what a personality disorder is - it’s something that gets in the way of you living your life. If you’ve not received a diagnosis, and you’ve not done anything where a diagnosis had to be made, and you’re not getting arrested, or pushing everyone you love away, then don’t worry. You’re not living with ASPD. And you know this pro-self dx, “well not everyone has access to a psychiatrist” argument? Well I don’t have access to an oncologist, and that’s because i’ve never needed one. That doesn’t mean I can diagnose myself with cancer, it means the lack of an oncologist in my life is a pretty big clue that I do not have cancer. It’s still a mental illness, and you’re still appropriating someone else’s struggle. You can’t have bipolar disorder without mood swings, and you can’t have agoraphobia if you’ve never had a panic attack, and you wouldn’t try to shoehorn yourself into these diagnoses because they’re not cool or sexy. If you’re trying to redefine sociopathy so specifically you fit into it, worse -- if you’re trying to tell diagnosed sociopaths how they should be experiencing their sociopathy based on your wishful thinking, ask yourself if you would sit down with a schizophrenic and tell them that, despite having never hallucinated or experienced a delusion, you’re really just like them.

Karasz’s own description of the evening and afternoon frocks and hostess gowns that are classically princess in silhouette but are individualized by the colorful hand-sewn appliques in intricate designs of peasant origin which are always identified with this house.”[i]
Appliqué has a long tradition in Hungary, where it was typically worked in leather, wool felt, linen or cotton. Karasz created her appliqué primarily in silk – including silk crepe chiffon – an exceedingly difficult proposition. One author noted “Mariska’s daring use of appliqué,” adding that “the illusiveness [sic] of chiffon holds no terrors for her or her skilled assistants.”[ii]
Numerous garments in the family’s collection, reproduced in Ashley Callahan’s monograph, “Modern Threads: Fashion and Art by Mariska Karasz,”[iii] show designs and techniques nearly identical to those in this scarf. It most closely resembles a pair of silk appliqué scarves Karasz created for her two daughters, Sloveig and Rozsika. Sloveig’s has a design of cats and leaves very similar to those seen here, while Rozsika’s features cupids, hearts, and arrows. Each scarf includes the girl’s name and the joined initials MK in the corner, as seen here.[iv] Karasz was consistently praised in the fashion press for her unusual color sensibility. The fresh yellow and green combination here is reminiscent of her 1937 collection, with “lively color combinations suggesting their suitability for resort wear.”[v]

Summerveld is located within the lush rolling hills of Shongweni, situated half an hour inland from the port city of Durban, South Africa.
This tight knit horse racing and show jumping community is home to the OBAN Estate, a contemporary residence and equestrian facility named after the Scottish seaside town from where the owner’s family originates.
The point of entry to this 4 hectare (430000 ft²) site involves driving through a raw concrete and corten gatehouse and along a curved, tree lined avenue. This provides an opportunity to catch obscured rhythmic glimpses of the home through evenly spaced Plane trees. Emerging from this leafy tunnel of dappled light, and passing under a low slung cantilevered canopy that opens up into an expansive parking court, signals the arrival at the private residence.
This modern home with brutalist undertones expressed in the structural design, takes on a simple arrangement of monolithic linear forms that project out across the vast manicured lawn and gently sloping paddocks, whilst still managing to position itself comfortably amongst the existing mature trees.
Approaching the home, an organic shaped concrete wall weaves its way above a shallow reflective pond, enthusiastically inviting visitors over a small bridge and through the front door.
On entering the home, the view of the distant horizon vista through an expansive unobstructed 10m (33 ft) opening is simply breathtaking. Simultaneously, the prominent V-column, the ‘googie’ styled floating staircase, and the triangulated coffer slab double volume ceiling, set the tone for what lies ahead.
The open plan kitchen, lounge and dining room area leads onto a fully equipped, covered outdoor living and entertainment area, swimming pool, and 24m (80 feet) long koi pond. A guest suite and combination study/lounge/gym area make up the remaining ground floor spaces.
Whilst functioning as the means to transition floor levels, the feature staircase offers a sculptural backdrop to the double volume space that leads up to the mezzanine landing.
Arriving at the upper section gallery area of the double volume, there is a notable change of atmosphere. The filtered light moving through the wall of vertical screens, as well as a series of 9 symmetrically formationed triangular skylights, collectively create an ethereal and uplifting experience, which always tempts a moment of contemplation.This floor level is made up of two twin suites and a master suite that includes a private lounge/reading area. All the suites are linked by a 28m (92 ft) floor to ceiling glazed passage that can be completely opened up to allow for natural cross ventilating breezes during the humid summer months.
The equestrian component adjacent to the home consists of stables, an oval shaped office, complete with private lounge and bathroom, a 2400m2 (26000 ft²) open showjumping arena surface, arena storage, workshops, and public parking for visitors cars and horse trailers.
Whilst this light weight building departs from the modernist architectural language of the private residence, the shape of the building reinforces the linear form originating from the home.
This steel and sheeted structure houses all the equestrian functions under a single mono-pitch roof, with angular sheeted walls either wrapping downwards, or opening upwards depending on the relative function that occurs within. In some areas the wrap down is dissolved into horizontal louvre elements that facilitate the sensible balance of natural light and solar control, particularly in the area of the stables. In addition, the early morning and late afternoon shadow patterns generated by the louvres bring a warmth and texture to the robust surface areas.
The design framework for both components of the project was established in the resolution of two fundamental challenges: The first being from a site planning aspect. The residential and equestrian components had to be functionally defined according to their respective private and public usage, whilst at the same time achieving the aesthetic of a single integrated development.
The second being from an architectural aspect. The introduction of a bold modernist structure within a rustic country environment demanded a rigorous design approach. The process pursued an outcome that would present buildings confident in their demeanor, yet respectful of the prominent site that had received them.
Ultimately the aim of this project was driven by a vision to see contemporary architecture, equestrianism, and nature, coalesce into a reality that was inspiring, functional and unique within the context of its spectacular setting
