With the last strenght of the Limbo Forces, I have concluded my last art for the time being... the Forces need a recovery time after this one.
As promised, I present Emperor Paris, a character of @paingoes 's Destroyer series.
-
(Arts' masterlist)
Tumblr media
A little blabbering about the art under the cut.
Paris wears more red and pink attire, so I used those colors on his clothing, but added a purple shoulder-cloak to reminisce about the previous Emperor's influence. The background is purple because of the Emperor too.
I tried to use decorations such as roses and leaves, since the rose is the Empire's official flower. I also tried to make the clothing similar to the 18th-century style in Russia and France, but I don't think I quite achieved it. The crown/tiara, however, does look a bit like the Devonshire Diamond Tiara, even though I used the Empire's colors for it. And I added as much gold jewelry as I could, because... Paris.

ateez film diary analysis
ok i am currently typing with tears in my eyes but that’s cool!!!! gonna talk about ateez diary film for a moment. btw if you’re here for theories, this might not be for you, my brain is not capable of that critical thinking lmao. although, i will be rambling/analyzing the cinematography and overall admiring the film!! under the cut because this happened to be 1.5k words oops.
man, first of all, 16 minutes?? thank you for the food kq!! i think their concept is super cool. it’s unpredictable, refreshing, and just gives me a lot of high hopes for this comeback. ateez never disappoints, they come back each time stronger and better.
“this is the story where their dimensions are split into eight pieces again.” that kinds hurt me. throughout the film we see clips of them being happy and joyful with each other, but we also see scenes where they’re all alone. they didn’t get separated by losing contacts or whatever, literally dimensions.
phew okay, when the man with the black fedora approaching hongjoong like that was soooo dskjdj ugh i love it when they have a bright light in the back, capturing the silhouette perfectly. sorry i’m such a sucker for those types of shoots!! now hongjoong’s dream. “the world inside a television cannot be reached. the world they live in and the world that i live in is blocked.” yea.. they’re separated from dimensions. isn’t that so heartbreaking?? separated by time and space.
um this might be a huge stretch, plus i’m horrible at science. i’ve read a lot of articles on where, ‘if time stopped would gravity still apply?’ and i thought of this because of the items floating up around hongjoong. without time, gravity, acceleration, speed and force are simply meaningless, so i guess that’s why it’s floating? as if we’re going back in time. there’s a lot of consequences and weird things on going back in time/time travelling (most famously the ‘bootstrap paradox’) because time is not an object and cannot ‘go’ anywhere at all, not forward, not backward, nor can it stop. so i expected some not so happy events to occur.
anyways moving on to seonghwa’s memory. i loved this. “i thought i lacked in many areas and have much to learn.” then we see a bunch of to-do lists and i guess they’re kinda like goals to accomplish or things he wants to learn. the somewhat long shot of him sitting on this table and the camera moving away from him gave me a sense of isolation (i also don’t know why yeo in the smn box is on the tv but it could mean he’s trapped). we also see him walking straight, kinda like following a straightforward path with a lot of control, hence the to-do lists. then he hits stops. now the girl is the total opposite of seonghwa. she’s dancing, moving, and overall carefree i would say. everything seonghwa is lacking. she’s freedom. i don’t have much to say about this scene but i really like how when he was walking one step at a time, it was completely dark. but as soon as it hits stops and sees her, there were lights.
now my favourite, wooyoung’s choice. that transition to seonghwa’s little emo time to wooyoung’s hyped underground music and dancing was the serotonin boost i needed. let’s talk about his ponytail because it made me a whole simp for him. plus he’s so fucking cool?? if i become a wooyoung biased soon, you know why. he talks about stage fright and the scene where people were looking down at the camera was perfect, low camera shots show dominance or superiority. when you have stage fright, you’re worried and insecure about your abilities (at least that’s how i feel) and with people look down at you is almost like they’re judging and aren’t expecting much from you. ateez brings him courage and reassurance, they give him strength. the last scene with the rain and the flickering light so chilling. its almost like the rain washed away his everything.
yeosang’s time giving me slight dark academia vibes and i’m here for it!!! also bird metaphors?? yes please! “limited freedom. like a bird in a cage.” we see yeosang in a room surrounded by other musicians but he isn’t playing his instrument. almost like he doesn’t wanna be there or has no real passion for this field. hence him talking about ‘expanding his dreams’. we get a close shot at his face looking forward to the right, i feel as if he’s daydreaming or reaching out. taking back to say my name, we have yeosang trapped inside that box, almost like the birds with limited freedom. he drops his violin and suddenly the birds (they symbolize peace, transformation, freedom and power) are free, giving us a scene with his friends. he’s free.
san’s resolution might just be my favourite in terms of cinematography. can we just talk about the long amount of time san has the stay put for the timelapse to work?? the scene wins my heart. now we see the classroom in a mess, meaning school was never enjoyable to san. always moving and no friends. the way he’s moving seems like there’s not much he can do in his life. the escalator scenes kinda look like the one in wonderland. time is always moving, the escalator moving, and san runs back up despite it moving in the opposite direction. im not sure where i was going with this but i thought i was kinda cool, how he’s running back up to be with his friends.
next, we have yunho and his brother. in a matter of seconds, all the light in the studio flicker and turns off. this is quite similar to the flicker lights in wooyoung’s last scene. there’s a pattern here with flickering lights and how it means lost and loneliness. we don’t know what 5:07 mean, maybe its completely relevant but knowing kq and their team, almost everything seems intentional. also i saw on twt (not my analysis) but seonghwa’s to-do list includes a task of learning how to drive, then we get yunho getting hit by a car. not sure where i got from this but i thought i would include it.
actor jongho!!!! he’s so good i love him. ok so we get that basketball was his dreams but due to his broken leg, it seems impossible for him to pursue that dream. we him sitting at a distance, admiring the game and the people who are able to play. but when he’s in the court, he’s all alone (might just be because he can’t go in court when other people are playing but just let me be deep for a second oki). the burning basketball means he cannot play again. then the fight scene between him and mingi. i want to talk about the camera work for a second. it’s unstable, harsh and a little unfocused (because it’s handheld) and it makes it seem like another member’s pov, pushing the realism on us. hmm this might be kinda dumb but the loud bang when mingi got pushed was a little unexpected hence every scene with the boys was all very calm and had music in the back, no sounds. idk just a noticed. ohmygod another silhouette scene with beautiful lighting in the back!!!! the camera is moving away from him, moving away shows weakness. i loveee this so much along with the smoke. his dreams are burning up, literally.
last we have mingi’s diary. “earphones in my ears, the world is mine for now.” again, similar to seonghwa in the dark walking, mingi is isolating himself from the world. he’s using music to escape from reality. mingi looks trapped by the way its shot, cutting off his forehead and lips only showcasing his eyes and nose. this could be his facial features are more important than anything else right now. the camera angle is below mingi, again with the dominance and superiority… because he literally kicked someone. but still the same camera angle except this time mingi is looking up at the sky or forward, not looking down. with that, mingi no longer looks intimidating, he seems slightly vulnerable. and i think that’s really powerful how quickly he transitions despite the same angle. so we know mingi uses music as an escape, “i would rather be alone than encounter the world.” then we see yeosang (by his flannel) taking off his earphones. bringing him back to reality with the boys, and everything seems a lot more peaceful. its kinda like, without his friends, he would rather be isolated. now i want to point how the loud bang from jongho’s shot. it’s literally the same shot but the noise isn’t there indicating that mingi has earphones in (i think even when they’re not literally in, he still shuts out noise), shutting off the noise. i think the little details were so well done. we also get a match cut of mingi blinking, back to the darkness. i think it shows how quickly things can be taken away from you.
MAN THE SCENE WHERE THEY ALL GATHER TOWARDS HONGJOONG JAKJDSJKSDJKSD I CANNOT BREATHE IT GAVE ME SO MUCH CHILLS MYGODDOO !!!!!! like that scene in say my name. gotta love the build up of the song then it drops when the members all show up UGH I LOVED THAT SOO MUCH!! “the memories of short happiness. and dreams broken into pieces” brb gonna cry. the hourglass is finished,, what does this mean? ;o also i cant help but to notice the lighting on how one side is dark and the other has light. this could just be for aesthetics but idkkkk just another notice.
hehe sorry this made no sense,,, anyways that’s all i have to say, i’m so excited for their comeback <33

Space Station 20th: longest continual timelapse from space
In its 20 years, the International Space Station has produced many memorable moments for Europe. Here we reflect on 20 of the best, as we celebrate yet another significant milestone for ESA and our partners in space. 1. 20 November, 1998 – The International Space Station is born. First module Zarya launches into low Earth orbit from Baikonur Cosmodrome on board a Russian Proton rocket.
Zarya
2. 2 November, 2000 – Continuous occupation of the International Space Station begins. NASA astronaut Bill Shepherd and cosmonauts Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev become the first crew to live on board the Station, staying several months. 3. 23 April, 2001 – Umberto Guidoni makes history as the first European astronaut to board the International Space Station. 4. 9 June, 2002 – Philippe Perrin becomes the first European astronaut to undertake a spacewalk (known to the crew as an Extravehicular Activity or EVA) as part of International Space Station construction. 5. October, 2004 – ESA’s Columbus Control Centre officially opens in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, Germany, providing a vital link between astronauts in space and teams of European scientists and engineers on the ground.

I created this video simply because I love nature. I always found the flower's timelapses fabulous, but most of the time they are made with a black background. Then I told myself to make a beautiful flower's timelapse with coloured and vintage backgrounds. To me, the 60's / 70's is the most representative period for the flowers. This is a way to pay tribute to them.

Our galaxy's black hole recently flared crazily bright, and we still don't know why
Tumblr media
The supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A*, is usually relatively quiet. It’s not an active nucleus, spewing light and heat into the space around it; most of the time, the black hole’s activity is low key, with minimal fluctuations in its brightness.
Most of the time. Recently, astronomers caught it going absolutely bananas, suddenly growing 75 times brighter before subsiding back to normal levels. That’s the brightest we’ve ever seen Sgr A* in near-infrared wavelengths.
“I was pretty surprised at first and then very excited,” astronomer Tuan Do of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) told ScienceAlert.
“The black hole was so bright I at first mistook it for the star S0-2, because I had never seen Sgr A* that bright. Over the next few frames, though, it was clear the source was variable and had to be the black hole. I knew almost right away there was probably something interesting going on with the black hole.”
But what? That’s what astronomers are on a mission to find out. We first reported on this story in mid August, and the results have now been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. As of now, we still don’t know what caused the super bright flare.
“We have never seen anything like this in the 24 years we have studied the supermassive black hole,” said Andrea Ghez, UCLA professor of physics and astronomy and a co-senior author of the research.
“It’s usually a pretty quiet, wimpy black hole on a diet. We don’t know what is driving this big feast.”
Do and his team took observations of the galactic centre using the WM Keck Observatory in Hawaii over four nights earlier this year. The strange brightening was observed on May 13, and the team managed to capture it in a timelapse, two hours condensed down to a few seconds.
Here’s a timelapse of images over 2.5 hr from May from @keckobservatory of the supermassive black hole Sgr A*. The black hole is always variable, but this was the brightest we’ve seen in the infrared so far. It was probably even brighter before we started observing that night! pic.twitter.com/MwXioZ7twV
— Tuan Do (@quantumpenguin) August 11, 2019
That brightly glowing dot right at the beginning of the video is the dust and gas swirling around Sgr A*. Black holes themselves don’t emit any radiation that can be detected by our current instruments, but the stuff nearby does when the black hole’s gravitational forces generate immense friction, in turn producing radiation.
When we view that radiation with a telescope using the infrared range, it translates as brightness. Normally, the brightness of Sgr A* flickers a bit like a candle, varying from minutes to hours. But when the surroundings of a black hole flare that brightly, it’s a sign something may have gotten close enough to be grabbed by its gravity.
The first frame – taken right at the beginning of the observation – is the brightest, which means Sgr A* could have been even brighter before they started observing, Do said. But no one was aware that anything was drawing close enough to be swallowed by the black hole.
The team is busily gathering data to try and narrow it down, but there are two immediate possibilities. One is G2, an object thought to be a gas cloud that approached within 36 light-hours of Sgr A* in 2014. If it was a gas cloud, this proximity should have torn it to shreds, and parts of it devoured by the black hole – yet nothing happened.
The flyby was later called a “cosmic fizzle“, but the researchers believe the black hole’s May fireworks show may have been a delayed reaction.
Tumblr media
(Do et al., arXiv, 2019)
But – have a look at the timelapse again. See that bright dot at around 11 o’clock from the black hole? That’s S0-2, a star on a long, looping, 16-year elliptical orbit around Sgr A*. Last year, it made its closest approach, coming within 17 light-hours of the black hole.
“One of the possibilities,” Do told ScienceAlert, “is that the star S0-2, when it passed close to the black hole last year, changed the way gas flows into the black hole, and so more gas is falling on it, leading it to become more variable.”
The only way to find out is having more data. They are currently being collected, across a larger range of wavelengths. More observations will take place over the coming weeks with the ground-based Keck Observatory before the galactic centre is no longer visible at night from Earth.
But many other telescopes – including Spitzer, Chandra, Swift and ALMA – were observing the galactic centre over the last few months, too. Their data could reveal different aspects of the physics of the change in brightness, and help us understand what Sgr A* is up to.
“I’m eagerly awaiting their results,” Do said.

OnePlus 7
OnePlus 7 is undoubtedly a great smartphone. Equipped with a Snapdragon 855, up to 8 GB of RAM, up to 256 GB of non-expandable memory and a 6.41-inch OLED in FHD +. Sounds good.
OnePlus 7: Everything in it
Tumblr media
In the white-red packaging from the manufacturer, you can still find a red USB Type-C cable, a charger with 30 watts and various instructions, an opener for the SIM-card slot and a clear case of high quality next to the smartphone. Headphones or an adapter from 3.5 jack to USB Type-C can not be found, unfortunately. OnePlus would like to sell its own USB headphones.
OnePlus 7 Design: same procedure as every year?
Tumblr media
At first glance, OnePlus 6T and OnePlus 7 are very similar. The front side is again occupied by the almost borderless display. The screen offers - unlike the OnePlus 7 Pro - a Notch for the 16-megapixel front camera. The back is also made of frosted glass and does not look as shiny as the "big" brother. At the time of the test, unfortunately, there was only the color "Mirror Gray", in China and India it is also available in red and soon even in " Mirror Blue ". With dimensions of 157.7 mm x 74.8 mm x 8.2 mm, it is significantly smaller than the OnePlus 7 Pro (162.6 × 75.9 × 8.8mm). The dimensions are more similar to those of the OnePlus 6T. Also, the weight of 182 grams is similar (high). In the arrangement of the keys, nothing has changed. On the right side you will find an on / off switch and the Alert Slider, with the help of which I can easily put my OnePlus 7 into a "Do Not Disturb" mode. On the left side of the frame is the volume button. The bottom is taken up by the USB Type C input based on USB 3.1 as well as one of the two speakers. However, a headphone jack with 3.5 mm is not available and the case is also not IP6X certified. The manufacturer has nevertheless installed protective rubber seals on the openings. It is supposed to endure a rain shower. The processing of the OnePlus 7 is without blemish, visually but rather uniformity.
OnePlus 7: technical details
OnePlus (consciously) no longer calls its new smartphone a "flagship killer". Technically, it is still up to date and can easily compete with the competition. But not more. In addition to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with Adreno 640 GPU, UFS 3.0 flash memory (128/256 gigabytes) and 6/8 GB of memory (LPDDR4X-RAM) is the 7er only a dual camera with 48 & 5 megapixels with OIS to Commitment. In summary, this means: Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (1x 2.84 GHz, Cryo + 3x 2.42 GHz, Cryo + 4x 1.80 GHz, Kyro)RAM: 6 GB - 8 GBBuilt-in memory: 128 or 256 GBDisplay: 6.41 inches AMOLED with 1,080 x 2,340 pixels and 60 HzInterfaces: LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, NFC, GPS (GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo), USB Type-C, Dual nanoSIMBattery: 3,700 mAhCamera resolution: 16 MP - Selfie camera (aperture f / 2.0), 48 (aperture F / 1.7) + 5 MPVideos: 4K (up to 60 fps), Full HD 1080p (up to 240 fps)
OnePlus 7: 6,41 inch AMOLED display
Tumblr media
The 6.41-inch, almost borderless AMOLED display of the OnePlus 7 dissolves in FHD + (1,080 x 2,340 pixels).  The display supports the playback of different color profiles (sRGB, display P3) and offers me numerous options for color calibration. Everyone should find their individual attitude. The color representation and also the contrast are of very high quality. This also applies to the maximum brightness. Overall, the screen of the OnePlus 7 makes a good impression on me. Incidentally, the panel is protected by 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass. Of course, the manufacturer has again thought of a reading mode with reduced blue, a night mode with lower brightness and a "video enhancer" for stronger colors when watching movies.
OnePlus 7 and the two cameras
Tumblr media
Well, purely arithmetically, the OnePlus 7 yes three cameras: In addition to the 48-megapixel sensor (Sony's IMX586, aperture f / 1.7) with optical and electronic image stabilization can be found on the back of a telephoto zoom camera with 5 megapixels and a diaphragm f / 2.4. Which is responsible for the double zoom. The notch on the front hides the front camera with a resolution of 16 megapixels. In terms of image quality, the main camera delivers good quality. In daylight, the colors look natural, contrast and details are right.  The software-generated bokeh effect works well, but it can not tear me from the famous stool. The OnePlus 7 records videos in 4K at up to 60 frames per second. In contrast to the Huawei P30 Pro, I can convince both the video and the sound quality here.  A timelapse and slow-motion mode (in Full HD with 240 fps and in HD with 480 fps) complete my good impression. Although the 16-megapixel front camera does not have an optical image stabilizer, it still takes good pictures. The sometimes very artificial beauty mode with the possibility for facial and body optimization is available for free.
OxygenOS 9: Very fast, very clean
The OxygenOS is definitely one of the fastest and slimmest user interfaces on the market. Visually, it is strongly based on Google's Stock Android, but also offers a few personalization options and a dark fashion. The built-in Zen mode, a kind of digital wellbeing, is activated manually via the quick settings, or automatically after continuous use of two hours.  If you use it then (is, of course, voluntary), the smartphone is locked for 20 minutes. Now I can only make emergency calls, accept calls and use the camera. The mode can not even be deactivated by a smartphone restart. New is also a screen recorder, with the help of which I can record the content of my screen in Full HD resolution inclusive audio.
Connectivity, battery, performance: Everything at its finest
Tumblr media
The OnePlus 7 offers LTE after Cat. 16 and supports Wi-Fi in all available standards. Likewise, Bluetooth 5, GPS and NFC are on board. Instead of an extension via MicroSD, you get "only" support for dual-SIM. The smartphone comes so with two Nano-SIM cards at the same time (also by LTE) clearly.  The transmission and reception performance was at a good level, as there were no significant problems. The call quality was great. The two speakers sound not overly loud, for one or the other song about Spotify and Co. or the conversations with the loved ones, but the sound is more than adequate, also thanks to Dolby Atmos ®, The built into the display glass fingerprint sensor responded quickly and reliably in the test.  Also Read - Samsung Launches Galaxy Fold in September If you like it even faster, use the built-in 2D face recognition. The 3,700-milliamp-hour battery of the 7 Pro is comparable in terms of runtime with the Huawei p30 Pro. In normal use, I come with a battery charge easily throughout the day. One and a half days is also no problem.  But I did not make it for two whole days. The wireless charging is not possible, but I can inflate the battery over the in-house Warp Charge solution with up to 30 watts. I reach 50 percent battery capacity in less than 20 minutes without the device noticeably warming up. There are no surprises in the performance thanks to the Snapdragon 855, 6 GB of RAM and a fast GPU. In the current Geekbench 4, the SoC gets 3,527 points in the single-core and 11,154 in the multi-core.

Cinemagraph Idea Generation
16/02/18
For this cinemagraph project, we brainstormed ideas for potential cinemagraphs. The theme being “Nottingham in Motion”, we had to come up with things which relate to Nottingham. There were 4 main sub-themes under Nottingham, these being: landmarks/history/culture, areas, names/sports/music/entertainment, and building/architecture-old/new.
For “landmarks”, we came up with Robin Hood, as he is possibly what Nottingham is most known for, so this would be perfect for the theme. As for what we could film, my lecturer mentioned that we could possibly put a hat or something on him, so that the wind would blow it and everything else around will be frozen, e.g people. Other notable things worth mentioning are the statue of Brian Clough, and we could maybe put a scarf or something around his neck, which would be blowing in the wind. The caves are also a pretty good idea as they’re also what some may associate Nottingham with.
As for the next sub-theme, “areas”, we came up with the lace market, another thing heavily associated with Nottingham, and I’m sure there’s a great many things worth creating a cinemagraph. As well as the lace market, there’s the market square which again, will no doubt be teeming with things suitable for a cinemagraph, such as pigeons flying, the fountains, which all embody the theme of Nottingham in Motion. There’s also the creative quarter, as well as the Arboretum Park, which will definitely hold a vast amount of things to create a cinemagraph of, such as the wildlife and animals. I most likely will not end up going to the Arboretum Park, as I’m not so sure how to get there myself, as the last time I went was in a small group.
The next sub-theme, “names/entertainment” has some ideas the same as the landmarks theme, such as Robin Hood, and Brian Clough. However, there were a few other notable things, such as Torvill and Dean, as well Jake Bugg, a singer born in Nottingham, and went to the Farnborough Academy, the same school that I went to - but I’m not so sure about how I could create a cinemagraph based on him. Nottingham Forest and Notts’ County correspond to the sports aspect of this sub-theme, although I dislike football so I probably won’t be making a cinemagraph based on it.
The final sub-theme that we brainstormed was “buildings/architecture” which was quite a good theme, as there’re quite a few notable buildings in Nottingham. Firstly, the Adam’s building, which would definitely be quite an interesting one to film, and if I were to film this, it would probably involve people walking to and from/around the place. Wollaton Hall was another contender, as it’s another place that puts Nottingham on the map, but I only recall going there once or twice in the past, so I don’t think that I’ll be making a cinemagraph based on Wollaton Hall. Some other places include the City Ground, as well as Meadow Lane, which I most likely won’t be doing. The Council House, again is a very notable building worth mentioning as it’s another well known building in Nottingham, and will perfectly embody Nottingham I believe. The final idea for this sub-theme is Nottingham Castle, again, a very famous and well known building which would definitely relate to the theme of “Nottingham in Motion”, if i could figure out something to film.
After doing some research about various different places in Nottingham, I was starting to worry a little, as personally, I don’t really know my way around town, as I live quite a ways away, in Silverdale. I would film a cinemagraph there, except that it’s quite reserved and quiet, so not a lot happens there worthy of representing the theme of “Nottingham in Motion”.
19/02/18
My brother asked me if I wanted to go out to town with him, so I accepted and thought that it would be an excellent opportunity to keep my eyes open for an idea worthy of representing the theme. Unfortunately, I still couldn’t really come up with any innovative or unique ideas whilst I was out with him, other than some basic ideas such as people, animals, and transport. However, when we were on the bus home, my brother said to me that I could film the clock on top of the Council House, which I thought was a pretty good idea, so I developed it further, and had the idea to make a timelapse cinemagraph. What I mean by this is that I could film the clock for a whole hour, so that the minute hand would go around once, and then speed it up so that the clock is moving, however, everything else would be completely frozen. I really like the juxtaposition between time having stopped for everything, yet the clock is still moving, it’s almost like a paradox. As much as I like this idea, there are some disadvantages/problems, such as firstly, it’s a time consuming idea, and if I mess it up somehow, I’d have to start from the beginning. Another problem, which could be pretty bad, is that the clock may be too far away for the camera to film, and also, I would’ve liked to include some of the ground, with all the people stopped etc., but if I want to include that, then that’ll mean that I’d have to zoom out to make sure I can fit the clock in too. Finally, and I guess it’s somewhat minor, but I realized that the hour hand will be there, meaning that it might look out of place at the time of filming, which will be somewhere between 9:00-12:00 in the morning. Of course, I can stop the hour hand in the final cinemagraph, but it would be nice if I could get it to 12:00pm, so that it would be exactly at the top.

2017 Gift Guide: Tech
There’s a good chance someone in your life has one or two tech gifts on their holiday wish list. The good news is there’s a dizzying array of items merging technology with smart design to choose from now, whether it’s for the home theater enthusiast, the brainiac whiz kid, the budding audiophile, or the aesthete first adopter. We’ve been check-marking tech designs all year for this end of the year gift guide – so, here’s our design-friendly picks to entertain, educate, nourish, and even decorate the home all with technology integral to the experience.
Gantri 3D Printed Table Lamp \\\ starting at $148 A few months ago we spotlighted the emergence of this San Francisco-based company for their intriguing 3D printing and on-demand manufacturing platform. Their catalog of wildly futuristic dimmable LED accent, area, and task lamps has since grown into a tempting selection of shapes and purposes, perfect to gift the person who lights up your life. For the futurist aesthete.
DOIY Le Videpoche \\\ $41 Having a place to drop all the contents of your pockets at the end of the day could mean the difference between always knowing where your phone, wallet, and keys are or having to purchase one of these. Now if they only would make this with wireless charging built into the tray for the new iPhone X… For the perpetually organized (or forever forgetful).
TRNTBL \\\ $499 It’s the first wireless turntable designed to play nice with two of our favorite streaming audio tools right out of the box – Spotify and Sonos. Every deck is hand assembled in either creme or black, and is equipped to identify every record played on its platter, generating a playlist to keep or share via Spotify. It’s the best of both worlds: the sound of analog with the convenience of wireless streaming. For the vinyl lover who already owns Sonos speakers.
JLA M1 \\\ $995 The best technologies lay low, stay invisible until you need their service. That’s why we think this speaker disguised as a side table equipped with an 8″ ultra-low distortion woofer and a 1-1/8″ optimized silk dome tweeter inside a minimalist modern housing is almost a two-for-one bargain. For the audiophile who believes speakers should be heard, not seen.
ANICORN Series 000 Watch \\\ $410 Elegant. The fashionable combination of grey and rose gold adorning the latest Series 000 Watch is a refreshing revamp of a watch formerly available in various shades of black. Beyond the new sophisticated finish, the triple-zero model still comes equipped to keep time accurately via automatic Japanese movement. Three concentric discs turn with every second, minute and hour. The Series 000 is also imprinted with the Swiss font Numeral designed by Dinamos, is water resistant with a 5 ATM rating, protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass, and operates without a battery. But we’ll admit it, we want it for its looks, not its time-keeping dependability. For the horologist with a thing for typography.
Rylo 360-Degree Camera \\\ $499 Don’t let its small size fool you, this mighty bit of imaging equipment is capable of capturing big, seamless, and immersive 360-degree 4K video through its pair of 208-degree f2.8 lenses. An image stabilization system smooths the frosting, removing bumps and shakes for buttery smooth video playback of action. A gamut of iOS app-based controls invites further experimentation, offering a variety of different editing and focus modes, including subject locking and variable speed playback. It’s also manufactured with a confident heft that promises it can take a ding or two without even noticing. For the adventurer who wants to see the bigger picture in life.
Xbox One X \\\ $499+ The Frame 43” \\\ $1299 We’ve already waxed poetic about The Frame, Samsung’s television designed to double up as a 4K, ultra high definition digital art platform, but we’re excited about this smaller 43″ option because it seems an ideal pairing for the new XBox One X, the most powerful gaming console available today. The +X console is more than capable of showcasing all the merits of 4K resolution HDR technology: games run faster, smoother, brighter, with vivid clarity, yet they’ve somehow reduced the physical size in comparison to its previous incarnation. The combination of power, resolution, and compact size makes the tandem a pretty compelling home entertainment system for the bedroom, den, or home office. For the art lover who with a strong affinity for the artistry of gaming.
Optoma UHD60 4K Projector \\\ $1999 We’ve tested and owned several HD projectors (including a couple of Optoma models) throughout the years, but nothing so gloriously satisfying as this even clearer and brighter 4K UHD 2160p resolution DLP UHD projector. It’s simply badass, for the lack of better words honestly reflecting our opinion. Whether watching movies through Apple TV or XBox, streaming Netflix series, playing video games, or even playing Drawful across a 92″ screen with friends, the pictures put out from the UHD60 never disappoints. It’s the closest we’ll get to an IMAX experience in our modest sized living room. For the cinephile who wants an execeptional picture at a reasonable price.
Nanit Baby Monitor \\\ $364 My friends just welcomed a newborn into their lives, so they seemed ideal candidates to test the Nanit. A few days after handing over the monitor, they emailed back with the following: “Nanit now and forever! The quality is light years ahead of our old video monitor. I used to have to stare at our child for a solid five minutes to detect breathing (as a new mom, you are constantly checking in on their breathing). With Nanit, you can ZOOM IN. The area that the camera covers is also really cool – an overhead shot lets you see so much more than we previously could. It even does a synopsis of the day and night via timelapse video so I can get a snapshot of it all. So not only is it informative, it’s really fun to watch.” For the parents whose favorite channel is BabyTV (aka every parent).
Nespresso Expert \\\ $329 We’re all about the ritual of grinding our own whole beans for a cup of Aeropress or Chemex brewed coffee. But we recognize many drinkers appreciate the convenience and ease of capsule systems. If so, the neo-Art Deco industrial design of this latest Nespresso coffee brewing machine is the most pleasing expression of drop-press-and-brew coffee. A pair of simple dial controls offers satisfying clicks with every turn, allowing users to dial in temperature and intensity with an old audiophile equipment-like feel. The Bluetooth app-connected controls aren’t necessary, but offers a cool additional way to customize a cup of espresso with a swipe and a tap. Pssst, you can always switch to refillable capsules to pack with your favorite local roasts too. For the coffee drinker looking for an elegant and compact design, and who wants to stop drinking from the gross communal carafe in the break room.
Sneakers \\\ $16 + Hex Calibre Sneaker Backpack \\\ $149 They’re calling this new 320 page tome dedicated to the business of sneaker design the “new sneaker bible”, its pages packed with photos and insight about the culture of collectible kicks. Pack a copy inside the dual compartment backpack from one of our favorite tech carry-all accessories maker, Hex and you’ve got business up top, party down below. For the commuter and sneaker freak who wants to carry their laptop and sneakers everywhere they go.
CARY42 \\\ $3029 With just 50 of these portable retro gaming systems slated to be made, these arcade in a box are likely to become an offbeat rare collectible amongst gamers rather than a realistic gift idea. But by chance you’re a hardcore Street Fighter II devotee, this solid American walnut case with a 12″ LCD screen flanked by two 10w stereo speakers and loaded with 100 classic game titles should make it clear you’re always ready to 1-up. For the rich gamer who just has to HADOUKEN at any given moment.
Kano Pixel Kit \\\ $79 I gave a Kano Pixel Kit to my neighbor’s daughter, and a few hours later her mom texted me back a video of her child having what appeared to be the time of her life exploring light and sound. The secret to everything Kano designs is the intuitive features that make learning a byproduct of curiosity and play. The Pixel Kit’s miniature screen is comprised of giant LED pixels capable of reproducing a spectrum of 16 million colors, and programmable using an easy block-based coding language…simple enough for Luddite parents to understand, complex enough for children to want to master. For the kid who doesn’t want to just play games, but code the next Minecraft one day.
