Next I should go through all the Emily Dickinson movies. Loved Wild Nights with Emily, hated A Quiet Passion, expect everything else to fall on a spectrum between those two poles
#They made a mumblecore Emily Dickinson biopic and it's like#First of all formally speaking it dates itself almost instantaneously to this indie cinema moment between 2004 and 2017#Second of all the casting was just. Not done well#Which is too bad! I wanted to like Cynthia Nixon in the role!#It also suffers from 2010s Didactic Dialogue#Where characters in historical settings object strenuously to period-typical sexism or racism using 2010s language + logic#And it feels like an aside to the audience that breaks the fourth wall just to insult your intelligence#You're being told to support this character because they chafe against the constraints + prejudices of their time#And are therefore more comfortable for a modern viewer to identify with#Also it can't decide whether to be self-consciously anachronistic or not
