Cold Wave and Warm synths come together to craft something completely otherworldly and lush. London based French troubadour  Rémi Parson beguiled us earlier this year with EP La Surprise  issued by label ISOLAA. Here is his favourite tunes of 2017! 

01. MÀQUINA TOTAL – Crema el Bosc (From Estàtua / Domestica Records)

I am always interested in the releases of this small label from Barcelona. Wonderful artworks and lots of great music discoveries, old and new. This is a contemporary artist singing in Catalan. I love the atmosphere and precision of this song. Puts me in the best mood, all dreamy, in a safe, and melancholic place.

02. JOHN MAUS – Decide Decide

What can I say? He’s one of the best for me. This song is so emotional, in a strangely quiet, ethereal way. Une merveille.

03. NINA HARKER – S/T Cassette (Le Syndicat des Scorpions)

Cheating there, as it’s a full record. But since there’s no titles and no real idea of tracks and songs so you just have to listen to it in full. It’s weird because it’s exactly what I like listening to most of the time. Very ambient, full of bent, exploded structures, rugged edges, fragments. A fascinating soundtrack.

04. MGMT – My Little Dark Age

Never been listening so much to MGMT, but I didn’t mind their two tracks on heavy rotation few years ago. This new tune may be a product, something opportunistic, I don’t know. But it’s got lots of things I adore: arpeggio synh, binary rhythms, good chorus, very straightforward and minimal. It works and it’s quite addictive.

05. SOMBORN – Cruelle Saison (Self-released)

I met Gautier in Troyes where I was playing one night, became friends and even went on a small tour with his band Belle Vie. Somborn (his last name) is his solo project. I like this song he just released; like a dose of summer in winter, so sincere.

06. FRANC CALE - Brigitte

I don’t know much about this artist. He seems to be Italian, but I really like his songs. Dark and thrilling.

07. ODD HOPE – We Belong (Fruits & Flowers) 

Fan of this guy. My friend Thomas had send me a link to his big hit Brave and Olde from his first single in 2015 and I always wanted to hear more. This is from his first album. I cannot explain why him more than other homemade pop around – something about his melodies and voice are just so touching. Reminding me of the very best of Sarah Records and 90’s US pop I grew up with.

08. WILLIAM BASINSKI – For David Robert Jones 

I discovered this composer while visiting an exhibition at the Wellcome Collection, an amazing museum in London, a few years back. An artwork was using one of his pieces. This one came out this year and is quite inspiring. 100% my cup of tea, as we would say around here.

09. MARK RENNER - Half A Heart 

This person I follow on social networks has always the best taste and I found this gem of a song on his Twitter wall. I don't anything about it and this Mark R. but do I really need to? It sounds to me like the best moments of The Go-Betweens, pure class.  

10. EYE – Le Croquis de la Femme (Waving Hand Records)

This tune has been a good companion all year long. It’s just very beautiful and fragile. Bringing me back to my old bedroom where I spent all these years with my old keyboards, my cassette player. Perfectly content.
