‘Eliza.’
‘Nope, I’m not doing it,’ she said, refusing to meet her own eye in the mirror. The dress her mother had picked out for her was pretty, she had to admit, but it was like nothing she’d ever worn before. It didn’t matter that it was partly for the mission, she still didn’t want to be wearing it.
‘You can’t hide in here forever,’ she said, her voice oddly soft for once. ‘And I’ve got your normal clothes.’
Eliza mentally cursed, regretting the decision to pass the clothes through the curtain so they themselves didn’t get too crumpled.
‘Darling –’
With a breath, Eliza pulled the curtain back and raised her attention to meet her mother’s eye. But her attention was roving over the gown, over the general look of the outfit. In any other circumstance, Eliza might have assumed the look was critical, but there was something warm about it. Something that was quickly shuttered away for the moment their eyes finally met.
‘You look brilliant,’ she said softly. ‘Thanks, Mum,’ she whispered, breaking eye contact before the tears – that she had no idea where they were coming from – could burn their way up her throat.
