It wasn’t easy, her laugh alone had this way of making him forget what he was supposed to be doing, which, at the moment, was figuring out if she knew Zelie Arnault. He swirled the ice in his glass, pretending to be casual. “So … random question,” he started, his tone aiming for breezy but landing somewhere closer to awkward. “You ever cross paths with a Zelie Arnault? French name, probably smells like expensive candles.” He tried to sound like he didn’t care about the answer, but his stomach was doing that thing it did when he was about to find out something he didn’t want to know. He leaned back, forcing a grin that felt too wide. “Just … you know, if she ever pops up, maybe keep your distance. She’s got this whole ‘I might ruin your life’ vibe going on.” He hated how vague that sounded, but what was he supposed to say? He’d been low-key stalking her because she was sketchy as hell, and now he worried she might mess with Ishika? That’d go over great. He glanced at her, trying to gauge if she thought he was being paranoid or just his usual brand of weird. Either way, he figured he’d rather sound ridiculous than let her walk into something she couldn’t walk back out of.

He watches her drop her phone from the café table, skittering under his feet. The perfectionist in him recognises a chance to be useful. Life in Devil's Junction teaches you to spot opportunities, even the small ones. "Dodgy, these slippery phones. Had mine go flying straight into my mate's curry once." Right proper stupid, making small talk when he should be focused on his task. But sometimes being too focused makes you stand out, better to blend, to be forgettable, to seem like any other bloke having a random chat. His training screams at him to keep moving, yet here he is, picking up a stranger's phone because sometimes the best cover is being bloody normal. A simple interaction that probably won't matter tomorrow, but right now it's the perfect camouflage.

Vera couldn’t hold back the grin. Just imagining the two of them in trench coats, trying to look serious, was already cracking her up. “Okay … but we need sunglasses and mustaches,” she said, her voice dripping with mock seriousness. “You know, to really sell it. Mrs. Chen wouldn’t even know it was us.” She felt lighter just saying it out loud, letting the silliness push out everything else for a moment. “Oh … and I’ve got our codenames ready. Operation Breakfast Brigade. You’re Agent Maple … I’m Agent Waffle. Together, we’re unstoppable.” She grabbed her bag, trying not to laugh at how over-the-top her words sounded. It was dumb, but in a way that made her feel like herself again. “Alright then … until next mission, Agent Maple. Stay alert.” She watched Ishika leave, still thinking about the syrup mafia they’d invented. By the time Vera stepped outside, she was smiling like she hadn’t in days.

It wasn't often that Ishika had conversations quite as ridiculous as this one but it was nice. Essentially unassuming which felt necessary from time to time. Ishika chuckled, finishing her drink with a grin. "Well, if anyone’s going to crack the case, it’s us. I’m sure Mrs. Chen will be more than happy to assist with her ‘street smarts.’” She tapped her glass gently, raising it in the mock toast. “To justice, breakfast standards, and putting an end to syrup crimes once and for all. May our undercover operations always involve more pancakes than peril.” She smirked and stood, unfortunately needing to head to work once more. "Alright, Detective Vera, I’ll leave you to your investigation. Just let me know when we go undercover. I’ll be ready with the perfect stakeout oufits for us both."

While browsing at the high-end watches section of the department store, Sahana noticed Ishika walking in her general direction. Normally, she’d steer clear—the whole Castaneda-Mehra rivalry was exhausting enough without her stirring the pot. But after years of dealing with situations, Sahana had learned it was usually easier to just say hi than make things weird. Besides, ignoring someone in a place as brightly lit as this wasn’t exactly subtle. “Hey, Ishika,” she said, keeping her tone light but polite. She stopped a few feet away, giving the other woman room to scamper off, if she chose to. “Looking to buy a new watch too?” She asked, nodding toward one of the designs being showcased. “Haven’t seen you around here in a bit,” she added casually. “How’ve you been?” Why did she say that? It wasn’t like we were old friends catching up over coffee—she’s probably going to think Sahana was being weird.

Moving on now, we need to figure out what went wrong, and we make sure it doesn’t happen again." Because that was the only way forward. Regret wouldn't change what had already happened—but action could make sure they weren’t standing here having this conversation again. "Do you have anyone investigating it? Pulling security footage from the airstrip?"

if it wasn't for the mehra's, ace wouldn't be where he was today. in fact, he was sure that he's probably still be homeless and if he weren't homeless, he'd be living somewhere that he'd consider the slums. so, there wasn't anything that he wouldn't do for the family. he owed them everything. he wasn't sure anyone else would have taken him in the way that they did. "i don't let you down again." he promised. he was already disappointed in himself and he knew that she was just as disappointed. so there was no way he was going to give her another reason to look at him in the way he was looking at her now.

I feel like you’re the type that would…maybe even meditate for that peace?” She mused, her tone taking on the edge of teasing now as she nodded at his words. “Devil’s Junction is definitely one of those places…but hey, if there’s any solace in this nonsensical world, it’s knowing how glad I am that you made it here…our friendship, as strange as it may seem to others, is important to me.” 

“what are you trying to protect?” seong asks tilting his head at her curiously. “do you find it hard to be a mehra sometimes?” he asks knowing very well of her family name in this town when he has worked for an opposing family for almost a decade now. has it really been that long? he forgets sometimes that he has been in the states for that long. he never thought that he would really have been here when he was younger, not in a million years, part of him craved to go home but he knew that would be a terrible idea if he did go home after working so hard to get his citizenship. he did have to finally admit that devil’s junction was his home at this point, didn’t he? he didn’t ever want to be close to these people, he wasn’t sure if he could trust them, but he was starting to learn to let each person in slowly one by one and somehow ishika was making it into that list. he could relax now, almost it felt like. he could relax and not always be on the run but he didn’t want to get too comfortable in case he did have to run again. he always had a duffle bag on the go in one of his many closets in his home in dynasty hill. It was just how he was wired. “i don’t really have anything to protect anymore, most of those who i have cared about are gone. I guess devil’s junction has a weird way of keeping you here, don’t you think? i never thought i would end up in the midwest of all places. life is weird putting people in weird places. i guess if i didn’t come to the states it would mean i would have never met you.”

Gavin slumped against the bar counter at Hidden Door, mind scrambled from staring at surveillance feeds for fourteen hours straight. "My eyes are killing me. Pretty sure I've memorized every pixel of every security camera in this city," he told Ishika. The bourbon in his glass looked way too tempting for a Tuesday night, but his brain needed something stronger than coffee. A group of suits walked past their corner of the bar, and he tracked their movements out of pure habit - occupational hazard of spending his days watching people through cameras. "I swear the new system is trying to drive me crazy. Sort of feels like it's personally offended by my existence or something." His laugh came out tired and dry.

She had this way of making his complaints sound less dire, probably because she never tried to fix them. It was nice having someone who'd just listen without turning everything into a life lesson. "Want to hear something ridiculous? I caught myself talking to the monitors today. Full conversation. Complete with hand gestures. I think I need an intervention … or maybe just better wifi." He swore his life had turned into some weird tech-themed sitcom - complete with him starring as the guy who probably needed a vacation and better life choices. The fact that he was admitting this to Ishika meant he'd either reached a new level of sleep-deprived honesty or the bourbon was hitting harder than expected.
