Lined Chiton (Week #22)
This is the Tonicella lineata, more commonly known as the Lined Chiton. It’s taxonomic classification is Animalia Mollusca Polyplacophora Neoloricata Ischnochitonidae Tonicella T. lineata. It is covered in blue, purple, or black lines. It is a mollusk, and can grow up to 5cm in length. They live in the northern pacific, from areas of the Alaskan seas to to California. They reproduce using external fertilization. They hatch from their eggs as larvae, but sometimes they hatch as mini adults. They have a lifespan of about 17 years, but the oldest chiton documented is 40 years old. They feed at night on bacteria and small, easily digestible plants and hide under rocks during the day. Their teeth are made of the toughest substance an organism can produce, called magnetite. It’s magnetic, and very, very strong.
