Brass of antique period finish and reproduction finish
Brass of antique period finish and reproduction finish are typicallyregarded as the premier in the hardware business for the fact that these doorhandles provide longevity and for that reason are durable enough.Possibly the safest way to keep brass door knobs polished is to makeuse of safe and natural products accessible in the kitchen.Brass door handles are glistening when they are newly installed. Troy Wharf Office, Rickmansworth Hertfordshire
Troy Wharf, Rickmansworth Office Building, Hertfordshire Commercial Real Estate Project, UK Architecture Development, Images
Troy Wharf Office in Hertfordshire
22 Sep 2021
Design: Mark Fairhurst Architects
Location: Hertfordshire, England, UK
Troy Wharf
The purpose built high quality Troy Wharf office building for the Marble and Granite Centre is located on an industrial site set within the green belt near Rickmansworth. The four storey building is partially submerged into the landscape on three sides within a disused concrete retaining wall. The new building projects above the ground disguising itself to the lake with a south facing mono pitch green roof, creating a fully structural glazed facade overlooking the site. The building utlises many sustainable features including a ground source heat pump for heating and cooling and ventilation heat recovery system throughout.
What was the brief? The brief for the building was to provide sustainable high quality office accommodation for the Marble and Granite Centre a leading importer and distributor of natural stones in the UK.
What are the sustainability features? The building incorporates the following sustainable features: 1. The building is heated and cooled via a geothermal heating system. Three 100 meter bore holes in front of the building provide warm water to a heat pump which in turn supply a fully integrated underfloor heating system and ceiling mounted fan coils. 2. Ventilation to the building is managed by an air supply and extract fan with heat exchanger to minimise heat loss. 3. The building incorporates a south facing sedum green roof, which helps to retain surface rain water and increases biodiversity on site. 4. The building reuses an existing insitu concrete retaining wall there by maintaining the embodied carbon on site and minimising the structure for the new building.
What building methods were used? Building methods included: – 1. The building is supported on a new concrete raft foundation supporting a steel structural frame. 2. The new composite floor slabs providing lateral stability to the existing walls. A drained cavity tanking system was designed to deal with the high water table and large area of retaining walls. 3. Internally the unobstructed office areas on each floor are maximised by the positioning of the lift, stair and services at the rear of the plan. The basement provides storage and changing areas along with plant and utility space. 4. The use of natural stone to the floor, stair and work surfaces complements the internal glazed partitions maintaining a light and airy feel to the interiors.
How is the project unique? The project is unique in the following areas: – 1. The four storey building is partially submerged into the landscape on three sides within a disused concrete retaining wall. 2. The new building projects above the ground disguising itself to the lake with a south facing mono pitch green roof, creating a fully structural glazed façade overlooking the site. 3. The building is located within a protected Green Belt area therefore the design had to demonstrate no adverse impact on this sensitive environment. 4. The integration of energy saving features ensured the building is an exemplar in sustainable design.
What were the key challenges? 1. Designing an office building within the Green Belt, where new developments are usually restricted. 2. Reusing the existing concrete retaining walls which related to a previous industrial use. 3. Designing a new office building without detracting from the marble and granite slabs stored and displayed on site.
What were the solutions? The design solutions to the key challenges are: – 1. Locating the majority of the building underground, and providing a mono-pitch green roof that disguises the structure when viewed from the lake. 2. The existing insitu concrete walls were laser scanned to establish its exact profile allowing new steel frame to be tailors to fit the existing opening. A darrained cavity waterproof system was installed to allow for an moisture ingress through the existing structure. 3. Conceiving a minimal façade appearance of a single plane of frameless glass that helps mirror the surrounding countryside whilst subtly referencing the monolithic nature of the stone slabs.
Who are the clients and what’s interesting about them? The client on this project is The Marble and Granite Centre. The company is long established and one of the leading supply of natural high quality stone products in the United Kingdom.

GROWTH 2000 Stand out from the crowd
Tumblr media
The sheer breadth and depth of UK retail is showcased for the first time in the InternetRetailing Growth 2000 report. RetailX researchers have produced a ranking that includes established names alongside up-and-coming retailers, using metrics that analyse online and offline presence and visibility in the market. These 2,000 retailers represent an industry of impressive diversity, from online sweet shops to beer specialists, from fashion brands to specialists in technology, clothing and more.
These are the 2,000 traders that sit below the Top500 that we’ve documented over four years of research into the UK’s leading retailers. We identified retailers in both lists through an initial ‘Footprint’ study, which included measuring their store estates, online and offline revenues, and web traffic. In the Growth 2000 report, we look at the 2,000 retailers immediately following the Top500 in terms of Footprint.
Zooming in on the Growth 2000
It’s a list that includes familiar British names, including Brompton Bicycle, The British Museum Shop and the Great Little Trading Company. It also includes international sites that are doing significant business in the UK, from Spanish department store El Corte Inglés to German travel company bücher.de, Australian website costumes.com.au and, from the US, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store. Designer fashion brands Donna Karan, Fiorucci, Hermes and Duchamp London are listed here alongside homewares brands Hoover, Kitchenaid and Breville. All these are among the rising tide of brands selling direct. Some leading brands already feature in the Top500. This list offers evidence there are plenty more challenger brands, both new and long-standing. Other retailers with a new business model include subscription beauty box business Birchbox, veg box company Riverford Organic Farms and meat box supplier Field & Flower. Chic by Choice and Girl Meets Dress both offer dress rental.
Some less well-known names have interesting and innovative approaches. Ann’s Cottage, for example, started as a shop within a petrol station at Polzeath, Cornwall back in 1978. The business now has ten shops, including a clearance warehouse, and its website features the latest updates on the surf at many Cornish beaches – including live web cams. This is one of a number of regionally based retailers that are using the internet to bring a retail business that started with a local geographic focus to a wider audience.
The ranking also speaks to a wide range of specialist retailers now supplying shoppers online, from Ironmongery Direct and Chinese Motorcycle Parts Online to Cult Pens, Loveknitting.com and Jigsaw Puzzles Direct. A long roster of sports and outdoors suppliers starts, in alphabetical order, with Alpine Trek and continues to Yeomans Outdoor Leisure, by way of both Angling Active and Angling Direct, and Lovell Rugby, among many others.
Altogether, this ranking illustrates a vibrant and varied retail industry, operating in competitive conditions where retailers must move and improve constantly in order to keep their place in the market. Amid this plethora of retailers fighting for attention, niche stores that offer knowledgeable services to a well-defined community may outcompete the Top500 retailers in their depth of knowledge and personal service, even though their turnover, web traffic and store network are smaller.
Understanding success among the Growth 2000
For this group, success may mean the ability to give existing customers the detailed, knowledgeable service they require, attracting others through word of mouth and a niche position. Businesses may already be selling to similar customers in different parts of the world, whether directly through their own websites or via online marketplaces. An ability to win new business may come from these retailers’ visibility when shoppers search for the items that they sell, their engagement with shoppers via channels such as Facebook or Instagram, or they may reap the rewards of a mobile-first or mobile-only approach, as they serve on-the-go shoppers. Being relevant is also important in building businesses that may only operate online or with a relatively small number of stores. That relevance may be about offering personalised goods, or services, or it may be about being local, or sharing the customer’s values.
In this report, we’re focusing on how the Growth 2000 (G2K) perform in four key areas that we believe are a key part of growing, and not just surviving, online in a hyper-competitive market.
We’re looking at how they use search and website navigation to stand out and to drive higher conversion rates, at how they enable shoppers to buy from mobile devices, at how they enable convenient and timely services through delivery, returns and collections, and at how they build a following via social media channels where engagement persists beyond the website visit. These are areas where metrics such as share of voice, and share of search are key to understanding the reach that these up-and-coming businesses enjoy, and how others might emulate them.
These businesses doubtless have clues for us as to how the retailers that lead in the UK market will change over the next few years. The rise of the niche pureplay, of retailers selling products from subscription boxes to own-brand goods and beyond, of the regional retailer and of the exporting retailer, are all reflected in this list.
We’ll also now be tracking their progress over time, as these businesses further develop their existing specialisms, move up to the Top500, or are replaced by other up-and-coming retailers with new models that are as yet to be revealed.
This story first appeared in the latest – and first – InternetRetailing Growth2000 report. To explore the report further – including the full Growth 2000 list – click here, and to find out more about InternetRetailing’s research reports click here.

TIMco OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES EXPANDED VETO SECURITY & IRONMONGERY RANGE
TIMco, one of the UK’s largest, independent and fastest growing wholesalers to the construction industry, has further expanded their VETO Security & Ironmongery range with the official launch of the innovative Fantom Doorstop, as well as the unveiling of a new range of Quality Steel Hinges. These new extensions follow the recent successful launch of the TAURUS range of external fence and gate hardware, whilst also helping to deliver on the company’s strategy of being a ‘one stop shop’ for builders’ merchants.
The Fantom Doorstop is the world’s first fully concealed, flush finish and trip hazard free doorstop like no other in the market. The flagship product from the Fantom Hardware range was invented in order to solve two problems; to reduce trip hazards and improve aesthetics. Unlike conventional door stops today, the Fantom Doorstop poses no trip hazard due to its innovative design. The doorstop uses a powerful rare earth magnet to activate a pin that is recessed into the floor to stop the door and hold it in place.
The magnet is so powerful that even fast-swinging doors can be stopped in their tracks. When the door is open in a controlled manner, the Fantom Doorstop will also act as a door hold open device making it ideal for preventing doors from slamming.
Because of its clean flush finish, the Fantom Doorstop can be fitted to all floor surfaces including wooden floors, tiles, polished concrete and even carpet. The product is available in six different finishes: Clear, White, Black, Chrome, Brass and Brushed Alloy, and all finishes come with a stainless-steel striker plate.
The new range of Quality Steel Hinges, also launching under the VETO Security & Ironmongery range, have been designed and manufactured to meet the high standards associated with TIMco. The range comprises of 116 hinges in total and is set for further expansion over the coming year.
The VETO Security & Ironmongery range can be merchandised on the existing TIMco stands in dedicated trays, along with supporting POS. The products will be individually packed in polybags with a bespoke label and barcode, making the merchandising an easy task for the merchant, whilst also improving both the ease and navigation of the shopping experience for the end user.
Paul White, Ironmongery Product Manager for TIMco, comments: “We are excited to be further developing our ironmongery range with the additions of the Fantom Doorstop and the Quality Steel Hinges. We are committed to providing everyday products with the signature ‘TIMco quality’ to our customers, but with added POS solutions to make the merchandising an easy task for our merchants. Introducing new and innovative products to the market like the Fantom Doorstop gives our customers new and unique solutions for problems and outlines our company mission to be that ‘one-stop-shop’ for builders’ merchants.”
The Fantom Doorstop and Quality Steel Hinges will be available to purchase from April 2019 and will sit amongst TIMco’s VETO Security & Ironmongery range, as well as featuring in the updated VETO Specialist Product Guide.
TIMco, one of the UK’s largest independent wholesale suppliers of screws, fasteners, fixings, nails, building chemicals and adhesives, power tool accessories, building hardware, site protection and ironmongery, is headquartered in Nantwich, Cheshire and imports and supplies more than 6,500 product lines from around the world to distributors throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe.  The company was established in 1972 and now employs 160+ members of staff from its offices in the UK, Ireland and Taiwan.  For more information, visit www.TIMco.co.uk
