The subversive sexiness of Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft has nothing to do with bra size

The 2018 reboot of the early aughts Tomb Raider series opens with actress Alicia Vikander, who plays protagonist Lara Croft, getting pummeled by an opponent in a boxing ring. One can’t help but stare at Vikander’s six-pack abs and toned biceps, a result of rigorous training for the film, as she taps out of the match.
Vikander’s Croft is, compared with Angelina Jolie’s sexed-up 2001 and 2003 depictions, the relatable version — working as a bike courier and rejecting a family inheritance and a ritzy life inside Croft Manor. Jolie’s Croft, meanwhile, appeared to be unemployed and ever-bored, with limitless means to entertain her mischievous streak, fit for an era of Paris Hiltons and the fabulous lives of intangible celebrities.
But what made the early Tomb Raider films unrealistic wasn’t just a narrative of time travel and unlikely assassins but Jolie’s impossibly bountiful bosom, amplified by a push-up bra that was talked about in nearly every review after the film’s premiere. (Imagine that happening today.)

It all makes way for a striking comparison between the Lara Croft of years past and Vikander’s Croft. Jolie, in an interview given in 2001, said of her “stunt bra as star” and hot shorts that “we weren’t even going to put the shorts on. But I felt we had to for the game. There are certain things that are specific to [Croft.]”
Fast-forward nearly two decades, and Vikander’s Croft is a tomboy who eschews makeup and other traditionally feminine qualifiers, subverting patriarchal standards of sexiness (save a suspiciously well-maintained ponytail through the film’s duration and armpit hair that doesn’t seem to grow despite multiple days spent on an island without grooming products). Some are quick to point out Vikander’s physical differences vis-a-vis Jolie; others celebrate it.

It’s what makes today’s Tomb Raider part of a growing list of cinematic women warriors who don’t have to be as buxom as they are badass: Daisy Ridley in Star Wars, Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman, and Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira in Black Panther.
The origins of the Tomb Raider franchise began in 1996, with a video game release that became as unlikely a blockbuster success as its main character Lara Croft’s proportions. The first iterations of the video game cashed in on Croft’s sex appeal, which prompted her chief designer, lead graphic artist of Eidos subsidiary Core Design Toby Gard, to leave the company. 
“What I objected to was the marketing, which represented Lara in a way that was nothing like the character. At the time I didn’t like that, and it prompted me to want to retain control of characters I created in the future, so that’s why I left,” Garb told the Guardian in 2006.
It’s that marketing that ultimately led to the Tomb Raider movie franchise starring Jolie — one that the Atlantic would end up identifying as one of the most “insipid” and “undeniably brainless, sexist, female-led action movies.” It also led to the omnipresent sexy Tomb Raider/adventurer Halloween costume, characterized by those hot shorts, skimpy tops, and garters-as-gun holsters, alongside a legion of cosplayers (costume players, people who dress up at times other than Halloween as characters in pop culture). Compare that with any given covered-up Indiana Jones ensemble, usually encompassing a leather jacket, beige cotton button-up, fedora, beige slacks, and waist-tied bags.

It’s a complicated matter, sorting through whether Lara Croft is an iconic representation of the empowered woman or whether her character is shrouded in sexism. Like the sex wars that characterize early feminist waves and continue onward, women can be both sexy in the scantily clad sense and empowered (see: Emily Ratajkowski and Adriana Lima).
To be sure, the new Tomb Raider movie is chock-full of cinematic shortcomings: Cheesy writing, worse flashback sequences, plot holes, and character deficiencies abound. But for all that it lacks by critical measure, it does give us Vikander as a true fighter. She just might be enough to win people over, without the push-up bra.

A Marketing to Media Translation Dictionary For Journalists Turned Content Marketers

  Translating is a tricky business. I took seven consecutive years of French classes, and most of the time, my teacher was a Lebanese-American woman named Hala Kim. She liked to remind us that English was her fourth tongue—after Korean, Arabic, and French. In Madame Kim’s unique blend of languages, she’d always say we needed to “be careful to listening.”
My teacher had a charming way of wording things in English because her personal vocabulary was like a complicated French-accented soup: a linguistic bouillabaisse. That’s how complex and lovely things can get when you pour in terms from multiple cultures. In the marketing world, professionals tend to glom onto useful marketing buzzwords as a shared language, and those terms can actually prove useful to professionals in adjacent industries.
As the marketing and media industries continue to look more and more alike, their lexicons overlap too. Ultimately, marketers and media employees want the same thing—engaged audience members—but we’ve all been taught to talk about attention and audience using industry-specific terms.
For all you media folks out there who are planning a switch to marketing, we’ve put together an introductory translation dictionary for you. You can also use this dictionary as a lead tool if you’re a marketing exec who wants to hire a team of Pulitzer Prize-winning writers for your brand’s blog. You’ll need to speak their language to recruit them, and veteran newspaper reporters don’t necessarily know what “map against your KPIs” means.
No matter why you’re reading this, these thirteen alphabetically listed terms should help you communicate across the divide. So let’s get started!
Call to action (CTA)
A call to action (CTA) is a bit of language in a blog post or piece of content that prompts the audience to do something specific.
The primary difference between marketing and the mainstream media (which I’ll call MSM from here on out) is that every single piece of marketing content should require specific action on the part of the reader, even if that action is just” read more”. For a brand, it’s not enough if 1,000 people read a blog post—those people need to click through to more content, subscribe to an email newsletter, or make a purchase. Content marketers never make content for content’s sake.
Meanwhile, a media company like Hearst might publish a feature article in the print edition of Esquire magazine, and the sole “point” of that article might be “make the reader feel like they really get Chris Evans.” Functionally, it’s fluff. Artistically, it’s likely reaching for the standard of a classic celebrity profile like “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold.”
To many, injecting a CTA into a piece of writing is to sully the art form. A CTA is what makes a piece into “sponcon,” or sponsored content. But increasingly, CTAs are looking like useful tools for the MSM. Many media companies have begun putting CTAs on their websites—the pop-up warning you that you’ve reached your third free article for the month and will soon need a paid subscription is one example. A lead form for a magazine’s free email newsletter is another.
CMP
A content marketing platform (CMP) is software for organizing the content marketing process. It looks a lot like a CMS (content management system), but a CMP is designed to help marketers do their jobs effectively. A CMS, on the other hand, serves many different kinds of professionals at once.
Most writers at media companies simply use the CMS as a place to paste in their writing. At media companies run by tech executives like Bustle Media Group, writers may routinely use a CMS for social packaging and basic SEO metadata too, but they still typically turn to platforms like Parse.ly and Chartbeat if they’re interested in their audience metrics.
Over in the marketing world, all that audience data is usually baked into a CMP. At least, it’s there if you’re using a good one. You wouldn’t buy a CMP without data reporting capability, and the really stellar options have a transparent workflow management interface.
Content campaign
A content campaign is a plan for the strategic use of content marketing around a specific goal. This one is a pretty one-to-one translation of “editorial package.” I heard colleagues say “package” and “packaging” constantly while writing for magazines and media companies, and now that I’m in marketing, everyone says “campaign.” Why? No idea. But there’s your translation.
Just like an editorial package, a content campaign is a multi-format publishing plan that might comprise social media posts, videos, gifs, email newsletters, press releases, merchandising, print media, and blog posts. It is the central effort of several content-adjacent teams to get people’s eyeballs on a particular piece of content.
Data-driven
A data-driven strategy or program refers back to data gathered from different avenues on a brand’s target audience. In the MSM, journalists who routinely parse out study findings and crunch numbers in order to report on them often self-identify as data journalists. Not every journalist is a data journalist—that’s how Nate Silver was able to create FiveThirtyEight with a central data-breakdown “gimmick.”
It may be difficult to work as a journalist in the MSM without having any knowledge of statistics, but it is completely impossible to do similar work in marketing without those skills. Though a lot of media still relies heavily on anecdotal evidence like interviews, opinions, or criticism, marketing lives and breathes data.
In the mainstream media, one celebrity’s personal experience with divorce is a compelling enough story to stand on its own. No MSM writer is going to interrupt their lede about Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk divorcing to dig deep into the national divorce rate, but a content marketer at a dating app company probably pumps out a blog post per week on that data.
Gamification
Gamification is a psychological trick that inspires us to enter sweepstakes, pour hours into Candy Crush, and buy all our lotions at Sephora just to watch those loyalty points rack up. (Just me?) Even if you’re not a marketer, you’re probably familiar with the concept of gamification—it’s the way brands turn engagement into a game-like process that rewards active players with little incentives.
Some especially savvy media companies have played with gamification in recent years. Inverse.com’s email newsletter reward habitual readers by racking up points, which readers can spend in the media company’s webstore. The New York Times has published several stories that use interactive UX designs, and these psychologically “reward” readers for clicking around with funny animations. This gamification of a company’s own website is also a hallmark in data visualization journalism like the stories on FiveThirtyEight.
Hub and spoke
To use a hub and spoke model in content marketing is to center all pieces of content around a single enterprise project. It’s a metaphor: there’s a hub at the center of a bicycle wheel, and each spoke that supports the shape of the tire connects back to that central hub. Content marketers like to advise writers to focus on a “hub” piece—usually a long-form e-book or whitepaper—and then build supporting pieces of content around it, like spokes.
If a writer in the MSM were to write a single definitive feature story and then spend the next few weeks writing short blog posts about the same story, well, they’d be accused of being derivative. There’s a vast cavern between reporting on a beat and repeating yourself, and that’s what keeps “hub and spoke” out of the minds of most media writers. The only time you’ll see an editorial strategy of this kind in the MSM is if a newsroom is particularly attached to search traffic (as marketers are). When I worked at Inverse, a website modeled after Bryan Goldberg’s now-ubiquitous “search-driven” strategy, we called hub and spoke strategy “topic swarming.”
Ideation
Ideation just means pitching or brainstorming. Sometimes marketers use a ten-dollar word when a ten-cent word will do. (See also: “utilize” and “leverage” when you could just say “use.”)
Journalistic
To be “journalistic” in your content marketing work means that you operate “somewhat like a journalist.” You technically interview people at your company and write Q&As. You apply for press passes to trade conventions and cover them the way a journalist would cover a convention. It’s a sliding scale, though. Occasionally, “being journalistic” means you are close to a journalist as a bottle of orange Gatorade is to an orange.
Here’s the thing, though, and I say this from experience: a lot of professional writers in the MSM are just as “journalistic” as content marketers. If you cover the film industry, for instance, and you’re not at a trade publication, chances are you’re not actually breaking “stories” as often as you are publishing explainers and breaking down fan theories. That kind of writing is closer to “making content” than it is to “doing good journalism.” So in this case, marketers just found an apt word to describe a multi-industry phenomenon.
KPIs
Your key performance indicators (KPIs) are a group of measurable values that demonstrate how swiftly a marketing department is working toward its business objectives. Example: if your business objective is to increase your brand’s sales enablement program, your KPI for that goal might be “we will produce twenty-four new marketing-qualified leads (MQLs) this quarter.”
Sidenote: you might be wondering why KPIs are “key” performance indicators instead of just “performance indicators.” The answer is that marketers love to say the word “key.” You’re not just gathering coworkers in a room—you’re inviting key stakeholders. You’re not just telling an audience what a slideshow is going to involve—you’re giving them key takeaways. Don’t ask me why “key” is key—it’s just one of those marketing industry mysteries we don’t talk about, like “how did they get Henry Rollins to speak at Content Marketing World?!” and “why am I the only one in this office who washes their own coffee mug?!”
ROI
You’ll often hear marketers ask for a project or story’s demonstrated return-on-investment (ROI), which is just a fancy way of asking, “How did this do?” If you’re an MSM writer or editor, you might associate ROI with audience metrics like page clicks and social shares.
Marketers tend to have a deeper understanding of ROI because they wear more hats than the average writer at a website or magazine. At a media company, functions like social media strategy, newsletters, video, UX design, SEO, and aud dev are typically split across a team of people, but in a content marketing department, everyone does a bit of everything. That’s why all marketers are responsible for proving ROI on their work, whereas writers are often just told how their stories are doing by other teams.
SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of formatting online content according to parameters set by Google’s algorithm, in order to make that content appear higher on a search engine results page (SERP).
Most writers know what SEO is in a vague sense, but they’re probably not responsible for implementing a strategy. Most media companies tend to separate search data from the pitch process, drawing a line in the sand between the science and art of publishing effectively. For marketers, that line is irrelevant, because the art of content creation will always come second to the science—however, you do need both to do content marketing well.
Because of a lack of education on the subject, many writers think of SEO as simply turning their headline into a question that readers might Google. Content marketing requires a more nuanced understanding of optimization, from meta data to keywords and longtail subject authority.
Snackable
If a piece of content is “snackable,” it means it’s designed to be engaged within a single sitting. A long-form piece of writing is not snackable, but an infographic posted to social media is snackable. Because content marketers typically work in a more diverse array of media formats than writers, they come up with ways to categorize these offerings.
Again, marketers fall in love with buzzwords, but you don’t have to say “snackable” to get a job in the industry. You can just call a social graphic or an infographic or a gif whatever it is.
Thought leader
Admittedly, this is the one content marketing buzzword that creeps me out. A “thought leader” is just an industry critic, talking head, or influencer, but something about that particular phrasing reminds me of Charles Manson.
I’m not alone either. In 2017, progressive outlet The New Republic published an op-ed calling thought leadership a hollow product of income inequality in the Western world. Thought leadership in a business setting, the article argued, is sort of weaponization of TEDTalk-style presentations, and a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. “The rich have empowered a new kind of thinker—the ‘thought leader’—at the expense of the much-fretted-over ‘public intellectual,’” David Sessions wrote. “Whereas public intellectuals like Noam Chomsky or Martha Nussbaum are skeptical and analytical, thought leaders like Thomas Friedman and Sheryl Sandberg ‘develop their own singular lens to explain the world, and then proselytize that worldview to anyone within earshot.’”
So, it’s up to you whether thought leaders are harmless LinkedIn influencers or agents of late-stage capitalism. You should just know the term if you’re working in content marketing because a lot of folks fancy themselves thought leaders.
UGC
User-generated content (UGC) refers to any online media created by the audience members following a brand. Because marketers want to inspire relationships with their audiences, even more so than the average writer, they tend to put emphasis on UGC. If a brand asks followers to tweet their own stories about a product, or take a photo at a branded event and share with a hashtag, they’re requesting UGC.
Interestingly, MSM writers like to joke about avoiding UGC—see the whole “reply guy” controversy, the “don’t @ me” mindset, or the persistent “don’t read the comments” meme. It’s all done playfully, but the punchline is that an MSM writer doesn’t really want to be bothered with feedback from random readers. Social shares are appreciated, but a modern critic or reporter doesn’t like to think of themselves as embroiled in a constant conversation with the general public. Marketers, on the other hand, are ravenously hungry for that back-and-forth.
Now, this is just a list of thirteen marketing terms that require a bit of context for the average media employee. There are hundreds of more buzzwords, disappearing from industry conversations as quickly as they arrive, but if you know this set, you can have a productive conversation with a content marketer. So go forth and network!

Every summer, the fashion set descends on the streets of Florence for the semi-annual Pitti Uomo . While the runways and showrooms are replete with trends for the upcoming seasons, the streets are rife with inspiration for adding a bit of sprezzatura to our current summer wardrobes . (For the uninitiated, sprezzatura is the fashionable Italian art of nonchalant dressing—the Italian version of the French je ne sais quoi as it relates to style.) While culling through all the best looks snapped by street style photographers at Pitti, we spotted three summer trends that are definitively blowing up in Florence right now and inspiring our summer ensembles until further notice. From the bold color trend that's poised to replace neon to the controversial accessory cool girls are backing, here's what's in according to Florence's most fashionable. Scroll on to see what they're wearing and shop the rising trends now. Neon tones  have been popular in fashion circles for some time now, but on the streets of Florence, we spotted a new color trend to watch: bright, saturated hues. Worn in one block, as Sade Akinosho does here, bright colors can have the same striking effect as retina-shocking neon shades. But the trend also looks equally cool when two contrasting saturated hues are combined (aka color-clashing.) Of course, bold statement pieces also work well when grounded with reliable neutrals, as Diletta Natoli demonstrates here. From lacy bralettes to satin slip dresses, lingerie as streetwear  is one of the most prolific and daring trends we noticed on the streets of Florence. A lacy bralette layered under a structured blazer is a popular silhouette we saw more than once. Case in point. For a slightly more demure approach to the trend, try a silk scarf under your lapels. Here, Italian singer Levante makes a compelling case for pairing a slinky slip dress with a color-blocked windbreaker. If the streets of Florence are any indication, fanny packs are poised for a comeback. The controversial accessory was one of the most touted bags by the street style set at Pitti. In case you had any doubts, here's proof that the PVC accessory trend is still going strong. A classic black nylon fanny pack offers a subtler option for embracing the polarizing trend. Alternatively, go bold and lean into the trending '90s aesthetic by donning a checkered fanny pack and a bucket hat for good measure. Pt.1 | Pt.2
December/January
If it wasn’t Christmas and Lady Gaga’s entire family came to spend it with her in Malibu she probably wouldn’t even get out of bed. On Christmas day she sat thinking about Lukas and wondered how he celebrated his birthday and if he had received her gift. She didn’t want space or pity. She wanted to get busy working right away and invited everyone who wanted to stay at her place while they started rehearsals for the biggest moment of her career. She put up a tent with a dance floor in her backyard so they never had to leave. She wanted more people around her than ever and threw a massive party for everyone she could think of. “Please don’t leave me alone in this house,” she said to herself and watched her happy and excited friends have fun.
She was keeping her head full of every project remotely near in the future and enjoyed the anticipation from fans and media. She would be back on top again and all the praise and the attention would fill every black hole inside her. She worked harder than ever and continued sweating in her sleep, tossing and turning while working on solutions and ideas as she slept. The sheets were scuffled together in a pile when she woke up but Lukas’ smell wouldn’t go away and she always had his smile burning on the inside of her eyelids.
As the try-out outfits arrived she put them on and stood in a full frontal mirror and looked at herself. Trying to find out what it was that didn’t please Lukas. She tilted her head to the side and chewed on her lower lip. She had never been more fit her entire life. Yes, she was sucking her belly when the paparazzi took pics, but still. The muscles were tense, like piano strings. If she was an instrument she was tuned to perfection.
”It’s not all about looks, but you do look fantastic.”
Her assistant Mariah approached her from behind, knowing exactly what was going through her head.
Gaga sighed and let her shoulders drop. ”We clicked so perfectly. Our minds are one. So what is it?” She saw Bobby glance at her in the mirror. He looked troubled. As if his boss wasn’t in the best shape she could possibly be. Physically at least. She glanced back at him and put her chin out to show him that she was indeed ready to put on the show of her life.
Six pairs of eyes measuring my physical condition and not a single one can see my messy inside, she thought. Alright. One month to go. She held her arms out and signaled that she wanted the clothes taken off so they could get back to rehearsal.

Christian stood on the patio, waiting to accompany his client to a birthday party. Functioning as representative/security/date this time so she wouldn’t have to go alone. He had given her space since his clumsy attempts at seducing her before Christmas. And now Lukas had broken her heart. Just as Bobby had feared.
Every time she pushed Christian away, he moved a little bit closer by letting her think she won. It was a dirty game but he’d played it before and he knew how to win it. Gaga was a huge celebrity, wanted by many but intimidating and hard to approach - that way. Christian knew this and he was sitting on front row ready to take her on when the timing was right.
She threw a sulking stare at him and he smiled back at her, complimenting her looks.
Gaga wanted to scream at him to do something about his hair, but slammed the car door shut instead and walked ahead of him towards the gate of the house belonging to Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk. Gaga played the piano and sang a few songs, celebrating the couple along with the other guests. She didn’t pay attention to Christian who followed her around like a shadow.
When she wanted to leave he stepped out before her and waited by the car. He kept a neutral face and was nice, treating her like a lady and held the door open for her. She had no reason to be mad at him anymore, but still went on like he had deeply offended her.
”Are you still upset about-”
”You knew damn well I was dating Lukas,” she snapped while she bent down in the seat covering her eyes from the flashes from the cameras. ”What did you think?”
Christian turned his head a faced forward. Yes, what was he thinking really. He didn’t take Lukas seriously. He never thought that relationship would prosper. Lukas was too young. Too easy to sideline and too weak.
”It was disrespectful.” Gaga stated as the car started moving.
”You didn’t complain when we were alone.”
”Well, I-”
”I think you were very aware of what was going on. It’s not like you were wasted.”
Gaga stared at him with her mouth open. How dared he speak to her like that? And that annoying smile, like he wasn’t even bothered. She felt the comebacks literally exploding inside her brain but swallowed them all since he clearly enjoyed it when she snapped back. He sat with his legs wide apart and took up a lot more space than he needed. Gaga curled up in the corner against the window and thought about Lukas. She was certain both Bobby and Christian had driven him away. She wondered what they had said to him. She was so lonely - again.
They sat quiet for several minutes. She felt like he treated her like she was an immature brat, and not a woman, with his way of brushing over her outbursts like they were nothing. Man, does he wanna daddy me or…, she thought.
She could sense his eyes were locked on her and she turned to look at him but didn’t say anything. Don’t let him win, she thought. His dark eyes looked into hers and it felt like he never blinked. The headlights of the other cars swept across his face.
He has nice eyes. Maybe I’m too hard on him, she thought and felt her shoulders drop. Maybe he really does care about me. Christian immediately noticed when she relaxed.
“We only want what’s best for you,” he said quietly and leaned in her direction.
”Thank you, but maybe you should let me decide what’s best for me.“ Gaga looked away and felt his hand on her hip. She instantly went stiff and crossed her arms, but didn’t stop him from continuing to touch her. His fingers swept over her thigh and stopped very close to her groin. She turned away and crossed her legs too.
”Let me look after you,” he said. It was obvious he wanted to be in charge, to make her need him. To depend on him and look up to him. She could sense it from far away.

Evil eye gloves are the new pussy hats at the March for Our Lives

In the weeks leading up to the 2017 Women’s March, thousands of people knitted pink yarn hats, dubbed the “pussy hat,” as a symbol of solidarity for protestors across the world united in a quest for equality.
And this weekend, at the March 24 March for our Lives events scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., and in cities across the country — where protesters will encourage lawmakers to enact more sensible gun-violence prevention legislation — there may also be pussy hats. But the headlining accessory this time around is a pair of knit gloves with “evil eyes” sewn into the palms.

Krista Suh, who created the Pussyhat Project, spearheaded this initiative for the upcoming gun control march, inspired by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Her goal is to collect 438 pairs of gloves, to represent the 438 people killed or injured in school shootings from 2014 through today.
“Individually, to show the eye on the palm, you can put out your hand in a ‘stop’ gesture — as in we must stop gun violence; enough is enough. In a group, you can raise your hands above your head to show the eyes — this is the universal gesture of ‘hands up don’t shoot’ and a reminder of how vulnerable our children are in a country with weak gun control,” Suh’s website reads.

She says it’s in perfect in alignment with women’s issues, a cause she felt passionately about after the 2016 presidential election. “Women’s rights are human rights, and there are a lot of issues specific to women — elder care, health care, and yes, gun control. We are mothers, students, and teachers, so I don’t think that there’s any issue that is off limits for women to advocate for,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
While the meaning behind the “pussy hat” is more easily deconstructed — both a nod to President Trump’s comments about grabbing women and to the cat ears knitted into the headwear — the evil eye gloves are perhaps less obvious in their symbolism.
“The evil eye is the symbol of protection, just like the pussy hat was a symbol of protection for women who went to [Washington] D.C. to march,” Suh explains. “These eyes are meant to show that people are watching — history is watching — what Congress will do next. I think it’s really powerful.”

Of course, not everyone offered glowing endorsements of those pink hats. They were called vulgar, pointless, and gender normative. As of yet, the evil eye gloves haven’t caused as loud a stir, likely because they’ve been a recurring motif in fashion for years. On Fall 2016 runways, for instance, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen both showed collections with evil eyes and the Eye of Horus on garments and accessories. There are entire sections on retailers’ websites devoted to evil eye jewelry.
“If you’re going to talk about the evil eye, you’ve also got to talk about hands,” wrote Racked in 2016. “The hamsa hand may be the most popular — and ancient — protective symbol against the evil eye. An open hand with an eye in the palm, this design has origins in the Babylonian Empire as an emblem of its goddess, Inanna. … Cultures the world over agreed on one thing: This amulet embodied female power.” So maybe those knit gloves do make sense. 
As for whether protest fashion encourages “slacktivism” — the idea that throwing on a T-shirt with the slogan of any given cause célèbre replaces measurable political action — Suh, for obvious reasons, isn’t so harsh to those who aren’t ready to run for office but might be ready to knit a pair of gloves.
“Clothing items are symbolic, but they’re also a gateway to larger action,” Suh says. “Also, it’s important to let people know they’re not alone — that they don’t have to work in a vacuum when other people are visible and brave enough to show themselves.”
