Nobody sent asks about the persocons AU but fuck it, I'm having visions at 11pm and doing anything more than typing away on the phone would be really unreasonable so here we go for a very short pile of Vibes
Ps: I'm using persocons in reference to the manga Chobits, as a shorthand way of saying that the boys in this are robots with a very solid mimicry of sentience going on + are a normal part of society but ALSO as a way to indicate to those in the know that we are fucking with the laws of robotics a little bit
"Thank you," says Vera as Edwin hands her the crate and the spitting mad cat it contains. "You're very kind."
Charles isn't so far gone yet that he doesn't catch the infinitesimal twitch of Edwin's lips. They're pretty nice lips, plopped in the middle of a classically nice face, paired with a neat haircut and what is probably a classically nice body under all the tweed. The PAYNE line was kind of designed for that, after all. Well, Charles doubts any designer ever planned for the tweed, but the broadly appealing features and physique were definitely discussed for at least ten years down in the bowels of Hilarion Inc. headquarters. All in all: not surprising Charles would look. He's only—well.
Out of the shadows where Charles lurks, Vera steps back towards the next service shaft and the upper levels of London. Edwin watches her go with near perfect immobility, but even Charles' factory-work-oriented eyes don't miss the relaxing in his jaw, the miniscule sag of his shoulders. Edwin, Charles is willing to bet, is satisfied with a job well done... Which means there is no reason for him not to smile when Edwin joins him at the back of the alley.
"She's right you know. You're proper kind."
He falls into step with his newly found work partner, smirking when Edwin throws him a sideway glance and looks back ahead.
"Do not be ridiculous. Kindness is a human trait, and I am not human."
"Plenty of us Robots grow emotions, you know."
Mainstream research currently holds that persocons happen over time. Owner misses a software adjustment here, shakes a bot's servers a little too hard there, and eventually that all messes with the auto-learning routines in ways unpredicted and unpredictable and boom: your fuck off tall toaster now has opinions. Charles, who gave himself a name before he was even out of the factory, would beg to differ if he didn't suspect that would get him shipped straight to the richest R&D department for a nice long play session with his programming. Not exactly an appealing prospect.
"So experience seems to indicate," Edwin says, sounding exceedingly prim. "I however, haven't. It would be illogical for you to pretend I did."
"Sure mate. No worries."
Edwin gives a little nod that Charles decides to go ahead and label as satisfied. He'll keep mum about the whole emotions thing, of course. No point in going against Edwin on it. It's just that he also knows it's a load of tosh, really, and he doesn't know it because of the way Edwin's lips twitch sometimes in response to what other people are saying. It's not because he took one look at Charles' crumbling state—the shot up voice modulator, the stringy red hair falling off his head, the long stripe of skin missing from his jaw to his collarbone—and took Charles under his wings. It's not even because Edwin gave himself a name.
It's because, well. Charles was built as a factory model. He has the specs for thousands of android parts running through his data banks at any given time and access to millions more with the internet. Edwin's eye covers—the pale green of his irises, specifically—haven't been on the market for the past sed venty three years, four months, one week and two days. A normal android his age would have been replaced a long time ago. Crucially: it wouldn't have given a shit.
That's kind of the thing with androids that work like they're supposed to: they mimick emotions real well—as much as the humans want them to, that is—but when the moment comes to have them recycled they treat it like any other day. 'Oh, you want to erase me from existence forever? Okay.' And then they go. But then once in a while, someone like Charles comes along: a defect, a bug in the machine. An everlasting problem to robotics engineer everywhere, whose position on the whole being recycled is a resounding:
"Fuck that."
That's how Charles knows Edwin isn't actually emotionless. Because no matter how many personality protocols he's actually got running—or shut down, really, he sounds like enough of a beautiful freak to actively have played with his own brains—when the time came to be recycled, it is abundantly clear that Edwin's answer in spite of any Robotics Law overrides was also no thank you.
And if Charles is lucky, one of these days, Edwin might even admit it.

I think the most depressing thing is that we shouldn't have to be afraid of AI.
AI, on it's own, is actually pretty cool. And we CAN and SHOULD have been able to have it without risking all these terrible versions of the future you see in clickbait youtube videos. AI should have been this interesting philosophical problem, that encouraged a wave of books about the ethics of sentience and robot labor. AI should have been the cause of celebrations, because maybe it will end up being useful for jobs that humans can't do well.
AI isn't really likely to turn evil and destroy the world. Yeah, that's definitely something to consider, but we aren't in a place where we have to worry about that yet.
AI face detection isn't inevitably evil, it's just almost inevitably going to be used in evil ways. In 20 years or so when corporations use their cameras to track your every move so they can market to you, that's going to be because corporations are awful and the government is not adapting well to regulating the internet. In some alternate world, AI face detection could be an innovative new way to use ID, one that cant be falsified or lost.
AI shuffling through the internet like an omnipresent spider isn't inherently bad. What's bad is that it uses what it finds to make dumb, unethical art, because that's where the money is. But in another world, AI's ability to analyze data could be used by scientists to find patterns in society and point to areas that need to be researched. It could also be used to evaluate sources, and disclose biases/conflicts of interests. Some schools are using it to detect plagiarism even now.
AI being able to do work that previously required humans shouldn't be scary. We should be excitedly welcoming in an era where humans no longer have to work to survive. We should be having televised councils of people debating ideas for how to restructure society when having a job is no longer required.
And AI's water consumption shouldn't have been a problem, because the people in charge should have massively scaled back once they realized the cost. They should have put AI on hold immediately, and started researching ways to either compensate for the water loss, or to reqiure less.
AI is not the problem. It is a tool, and as such, morally neutral. The ways it is being used are the problem. The people who are controlling it are the problem. If your society is structured so that the people in power cannot be held accountable, then every new tool, every innovation, only magnifies and expands their power. But if your society is structured where quality of life and ethics are valued highest, those tools become amazing, wonderful things. They become gifts, from humanity to humanity, that expand our ability to live good lives and take care of our environment.
We don't have to fight the future, we have to fight for the future.

Strange Chinese trade-war recommendations at US Congress
COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF THE COMMISSION’S 2024 RECOMMENDATIONS Part II: Technology and Consumer Product Opportunities and Risks Chapter 3: U.S.-China Competition in Emerging Technologies The Commission recommends:
Congress establish and fund a Manhattan Project-like program dedicated to racing to and acquiring an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) capability. AGI is generally defined as systems that are as good as or better than human capabilities across all cognitive domains and would surpass the sharpest human minds at every task. Among the specific actions the Commission recommends for Congress:
Provide broad multiyear contracting authority to the executive branch and associated funding for leading artificial intelligence, cloud, and data center companies and others to advance the stated policy at a pace and scale consistent with the goal of U.S. AGI leadership; and
Direct the U.S. secretary of defense to provide a Defense Priorities and Allocations System ���DX Rating” to items in the artificial intelligence ecosystem to ensure this project receives national priority.
Congress consider legislation to:
Require prior approval and ongoing oversight of Chinese involvement in biotechnology companies engaged in operations in the United States, including research or other related transactions. Such approval and oversight operations shall be conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in consultation with other appropriate governmental entities. In identifying the involvement of Chinese entities or interests in the U.S. biotechnology sector, Congress should include firms and persons: ○ Engaged in genomic research; ○ Evaluating and/or reporting on genetic data, including for medical or therapeutic purposes or ancestral documentation; ○ Participating in pharmaceutical development; ○ Involved with U.S. colleges and universities; and ○ Involved with federal, state, or local governments or agen cies and departments.
Support significant Federal Government investments in biotechnology in the United States and with U.S. entities at every level of the technology development cycle and supply chain, from basic research through product development and market deployment, including investments in intermediate services capacity and equipment manufacturing capacity.
To protect U.S. economic and national security interests, Congress consider legislation to restrict or ban the importation of certain technologies and services controlled by Chinese entities, including:
Autonomous humanoid robots with advanced capabilities of (i) dexterity, (ii) locomotion, and (iii) intelligence; and
Energy infrastructure products that involve remote servicing, maintenance, or monitoring capabilities, such as load balancing and other batteries supporting the electrical grid, batteries used as backup systems for industrial facilities and/ or critical infrastructure, and transformers and associated equipment.
Congress encourage the Administration’s ongoing rulemaking efforts regarding “connected vehicles” to cover industrial machinery, Internet of Things devices, appliances, and other connected devices produced by Chinese entities or including Chinese technologies that can be accessed, serviced, maintained, or updated remotely or through physical updates.
Congress enact legislation prohibiting granting seats on boards of directors and information rights to China-based investors in strategic technology sectors. Allowing foreign investors to hold seats and observer seats on the boards of U.S. technology start-ups provides them with sensitive strategic information, which could be leveraged to gain competitive advantages. Prohibiting this practice would protect intellectual property and ensure that U.S. technological advances are not compromised. It would also reduce the risk of corporate espionage, safeguarding America’s leadership in emerging technologies.
Congress establish that:
The U.S. government will unilaterally or with key interna- tional partners seek to vertically integrate in the develop- ment and commercialization of quantum technology.
Federal Government investments in quantum technology support every level of the technology development cycle and supply chain from basic research through product development and market deployment, including investments in intermediate services capacity.
The Office of Science and Technology Policy, in consultation with appropriate agencies and experts, develop a Quantum Technology Supply Chain Roadmap to ensure that the United States coordinates outbound investment, U.S. critical supply chain assessments, the activities of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), and federally supported research activities to ensure that the United States, along with key allies and partners, will lead in this critical technology and not advance Chinese capabilities and development....

Foxy, the reason for Roxy's self doubts
I wasn't very found of the idea that there was never any Foxy animatronic at megapizzaplex. Because it would be simply boring. But I changed my mind.
Hear me out.
If there was no Foxy, that mean when they were putting together a new animatronic band, thay made a decision to change one thing. It was always the same squad, Freddy, Bonnie, Foxy and Chika. But the menagement decied to do something new this time.
You know how it works. Perhaps they wanted there to be two "girl animatronic" on the band. And maybe market research told them that kids consider wolfs cooler than foxes. And maybe even they thought (without teling it out loud) that female wolf will pull them some adults that will consider her atractive or whatever.
So they featured Roxy instead.
But you also know how fans can get with changes like that.
Imagine now what if
What if she had to face hate simply because she was not Foxy? Simply because the PR team decided it will be marketable idea to make her "a girl" and "a wolf", and suddely so many people are giving her crap for a cosmetic change that she had no inluence over?
What if she had to constanly hear she is not as good as Foxy? That she as the only glamrock had to win over the fanbase when the rest of them had an pre-established one?
She had to proove she is as good as Foxy. No, BETTER!
The popularity is life for robot entertainers. (Look what happened to Bonnie).
Ever since she came to being she had to face resentment, and fight for her right to exist, with the animatronic THAT WAS NEVER EVEN CREATED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
And then, the company builds a kids cove. Someone on the internet brought to my attention that the cove looks less like an old demonted area, but like something new that was left empty and unfinished until it could be decided of they want to follow up with the idea.
And there was the Foxy themed log ride, that had been constructed but never finished.
So perhaps the menagment HAD some plans of putting there Foxy. Maybe at first he would not be on the band. Maybe he would be like Monty before his promotion to glamrock.
And just like Monty, there was a risk he would eventually jump in Roxy's place, if he turned out more popular.
At least that what Roxy would think after learning about the potential of Plex Foxy finally baing made.
Oh boy, she has every reason to be a mess.
