On Tuesday, Yahoo announced that it had pulled out from China. It said that the operating environment had become increasingly challenging and so the tech company left the country. The move has been seen as more as a symbolic one as the government had already blocked many of Yahoo’s operations in China. The Chinese government has been expanding its control on domestic tech giants as well as international ones.

Apple offers an official way to record your iPhone or iPad’s screen if you have a Mac. If you just have a Windows PC, there are third-party apps that will allow you to record anything on your screen.
This feature was designed for app developers, but it can be used by anyone else. Record a tutorial and upload it to YouTube, or capture a video of your mobile gaming prowess and share it with your friends.

Football betting is in full swing. Don't forget the taxman if you win
Tumblr media
Algerina Perna | Baltimore Sun | MCT | Getty ImagesIt appears Americans are definitely ready to bet on football.Heading into the National Football League's 102nd season — which kicked off last week — about 45.2 million Americans said they plan to wager on games, up about 36% from a year ago, according to research from the American Gaming Association. The growth comes as half of states now offer legalized sports betting and more are gearing up to do so.That means your winning bets could be subject to taxation even before it reaches you, depending on how big it is. And if you win money through unregulated channels, you're expected to fess up to the IRS at tax time."Whether you enjoy bets on races, join a fantasy football league, join friends at bingo — or have other gambling hobbies — the winnings are fully taxable and you must report the income on your return," said Susan Allen, senior manager for tax policy & advocacy with the American Institute of CPAs.Since the Supreme Court overturned a federal law in 2018 that had banned sports betting in most places, the number of states that have legalized the activity has reached 32, with 26 of them plus Washington, D.C., with betting available, the gaming association said. Another five states' systems may be operational by the end of the season.Generally speaking, if you win more than $600 for a sports wager and the amount is 300 times the original bet, the payor is required to withhold 24% of your winnings for federal taxes, according to the IRS.There's also a Form W-2G that you might receive from the payor, depending on how much you win. Fantasy sports players who win more than $600 generally receive a Form 1099-MISC or 1099-K, depending on how the money is paid out.Remember, those forms also go to the IRS. And if you fail to report the income, you can pretty much count on hearing from the tax agency. Also be aware that your final tax bill could be higher or lower than the amount withheld by the casino or other payor, depending on a variety of factors that include your other income. And even if no tax is withheld, you're not off the hook for claiming the income on your tax return.More from Personal Finance: Many teens are hesitant about the stock market Here are some ways to pay off big credit card debt Why you should start saving for retirement in your 20sOne way to reduce what you owe on your winnings is to write off your gambling losses — if you can."You can deduct those losses to the extent of your winnings," Allen said. "But, you must itemize your deductions."However, the majority of taxpayers do not itemize because they're better off with the standard deduction, which was nearly doubled under new tax law that took effect in 2018.If you are able to itemize and have gambling expenses to deduct against winnings, be sure you'd be able to back up your claims with documentation if the IRS were ever to question your tax return. If you do win big, you should consult with a tax advisor before doing much of anything. On top of making sure you set aside enough to cover any additional money due to the IRS or at the state level, it's worth getting guidance to ensure you don't overlook any strategies that could reduce your overall tax burden. Wi-Fi is obviously more convenient than wired Ethernet cables, but Ethernet still offers significant advantages. Join us as we take a look at the pros and cons of wired and wireless connections.
You probably won’t be connecting an Ethernet cable to your smartphone any time soon. But it’s usually worth running Ethernet cables to the devices that matter, if you can—gaming and media PCs (or consoles), backup devices, and set-top boxes being just a few examples. To help you make the decision, we’re going to take a look at the three main advantages of using Ethernet over Wi-Fi—faster speeds, lower latency, and reliable connections.

Flowers as far as the eye can see!
Love is in full bloom for Mary Costa and Mike Marsoupian.
On March 11, the Los Angeles couple headed to Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore, California for an engagement photo shoot among the now-Insta famous “super bloom” ― an explosion of wildflowers thanks to an especially rainy winter in Southern California.
The fields of vibrant California poppies were the perfect springtime backdrop for the photo shoot, which was shot by photographer Alyssa Marie and first featured on Green Wedding Shoes.
“The super bloom was truly magical,” Mary told HuffPost. “It looked like the Wizard of Oz, and we couldn’t get over the colors! It almost looked like a fake backdrop, it was so perfect.”
Mary and Mike had been dreaming of a wildflower location for their engagement photos, but couldn’t find anything that was in bloom for months. Then the couple’s florist Angelena Moio of Shindig Chic told them about the super bloom in Lake Elsinore.
“Mike and I loved the idea of being surrounded by the poppy ― the California state flower ― especially since he’s originally from Michigan and I’m from New Hampshire. It was perfectly symbolic of our home [together] here,” she said.
The super bloom craze on social media brought many people to Lake Elsinore, making the location very crowded when the couple arrived for their shoot.
“Thankfully our incredible photographer got to the location extra early and discovered that we could avoid everyone and still see gorgeous poppies if we hiked far into the trail ― so that’s what we did!” Mary said.
The pair ― who are tying the knot on June 2 in Camarillo, California ― first met in April 2013 when mutual friends took Mary, who is also a professional photographer, to see Mike’s band perform in Silver Lake. A few months later, their paths crossed again at a friend’s birthday party where they really hit it off.
“We went on our first date a few days later and have been inseparable ever since!” Mary told HuffPost. “Mike eventually admitted that he stalked my photo blog for over a year before that first meeting, which I found incredibly endearing.”
Below, more photos from the eye-catching shoot. For more on this story, head over to Green Wedding Shoes.

Extension cords are one of the most common household items, but there are many different kinds of extension cords built for different purposes. Here’s what you should know about extension cords and when they can and can’t be used.
The Different Gauges (aka AWG)
The wires inside an extension cord come in all different thicknesses, which is denoted as “gauge”. It’s also sometimes referred to as “AWG”, which stands for American Wire Gauge. However, don’t get this confused with the actual thickness of the cord itself (though the thicker the gauge, the thicker the cable, to an extent). Instead, gauge refers to the thickness of the wires inside the extension cord.
Extension cords range anywhere from 18 gauge to 10 gauge, with 10 gauge being the thickest. Lower gauge (aka thicker) wires allow more electrical current to flow through the extension cord, making lower-gauge cords better for larger appliances and tools that need a lot of juice.
Most higher-gauge extension cords are pretty thin and compact (like this one), and made to be used with electronics that don’t need a lot of power, like lamps, alarm clocks, fans, and more. These are also known as “light duty” extension cords.
Thicker-gauge extension cords in the range of 10-14 gauge are known as “medium duty” or “heavy duty” extension cords (like this one) and usually look like a really-thick ethernet cable of sorts. They also usually have bulkier connectors at the ends to protect the components on the inside. However, you can sometimes find light-duty extension cords that look like heavy-duty ones (like this one), so be sure to double check the gauge, which can sometimes be found printed on the cord itself.
Thicker-gauge extension cords are suited for more demanding appliances and tools, like space heaters, refrigerators, and more. There’s a lot of controversy about using extension cords with demanding appliances, so we’ll talk more about that in a moment.

Building a modern desktop PC is surprisingly easy, thanks to modular parts and a lot of solid engineering. It’s often explained as “LEGO for adults.” But managing the air cooling system within a PC is considerably more complex.  We’re talking about physics, thermodynamics, all sorts of fun stuff. But there are a few basic principles you can apply to almost any build to get optimal airflow, and thus, optimal cooling.
Pick the Best Fans for Your PC
Any desktop PC with standard case fan mounts will work (80mm, 120mm, 140mm, 200mm—it doesn’t mater as long as they’re consistent). Deciding on a cooling approach that matches your case and your components before you go shopping for fans and coolers can be helpful.
That said, cooling fans come with a surprising amount of variation. You’ll need to make sure they’re sized right to fit the screw mounts on your case, obviously, but beyond that you’ll also want to consider:
Big or little: Generally bigger fans can move the same amount of air as smaller fans at lower revolutions per minute. Since the tiny electric motors in the fan mechanism doesn’t need to spin so fast, bigger case fans are quieter than smaller ones—and thus more desirable, if your case supports them.
Fast or slow: Case fans are rated at a maximum revolutions per minute, or RPM. Faster fans move more air, but slower fans are much quieter. With a compatible motherboard or a fan controller, though, you should be able to adjust your fans’ speed for the perfect balance, so this won’t matter as much. Some fans and cases even come with manual switches for basic fan control.
Airflow or static pressure: Case fans generally come with two types of fins: those designed for airflow, and those designed for static pressure. Airflow-optimized fans are quieter and great for unrestricted areas, like the front of your case. Static pressure fans are designed to pull or push air with extra force, which is ideal for areas with more restricted airflow—like a water cooling radiator or a large CPU cooler with lots of fins. That said, some basic tests on these “high static pressure” models show that their benefit is questionable in standard air-cooled builds.
LEDs and other aesthetics: some case fans use the power supplied to the fan motor to also light up LEDs, either in a single color or in a multi-colored RGB array. These look cool—especially when coupled with a “tricked out” overall build—but don’t add or detract from performance in any meaningful way. Splurge on LED fans if you want, or save some money and keep your build low-key.
If you don’t want to do a ton of research, we highly recommend Noctua fans for great noise-to-performance ratio—though some of their models are on the pricier side (not to mention the standard line is butt-ugly). But there are a lot of great fans out there, so dig around sites like Newegg to see what you can find.
The Basics: Cool Air Comes In, Hot Air Goes Out
The central concept of air cooling is very simple. As the components in your computer operate, they build up heat, which can lower performance and eventually damage the hardware if it goes unchecked. The fans on the front of your PC’s case are typically intake fans, drawing in the relatively cool air of the surrounding room to lower the temperature inside the case. Fans on the rear and of the case are usually exhaust fans, expelling the hot air warmed up by the components back into the room.

Dolly Parton’s life is a true rags-to-riches story: Raised in poverty in rural Tennessee, she beat the odds and rose to international stardom as a country musician, actress, producer, and philanthropist. Now, The New York Times reports that the Southern star’s down-home roots are the focus of an honors history course offered at the University of Tennessee’s main campus in Knoxville.
Called “Dolly’s America,” the seminar uses Parton's personal journey as a lens through which to examine modern Appalachian culture. The singer grew up in Sevier County, about 30 miles outside of Knoxville, and the class looks at how a "'hillbilly' girl from Appalachia grew up to become an international one-word sensation,” according to the course description on the university’s website.
Materials include Dolly Parton’s 1994 autobiography, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business, and books about Appalachia; movies, TV shows, and historic videos; and scholarly articles. Ranging from lighthearted to somber, they provide a framework for students to examine historic themes like child labor, regional poverty, and the federal-state committee formed by President Kennedy that’s known today as the President's Appalachian Regional Commission.
“Dolly’s America” also tries to dispel deep-seated stereotypes about rural America: ”Reading about how hillbillies and feuds began as made-up characters and tropes in novels and cartoons to the rise of hillbilly music to Christian entertainment and the thread of tourism, students see the processes by which fiction often becomes fact, and how heritage is a blend of the real and the imagined,” the course description says.
“Dolly’s America” was taught for the first time last year, and will be taught again in Fall 2017. That said, admission is likely to be competitive, as the course recently received a Twitter endorsement by Parton herself:
