Cine Pobre
Gibrara is a small fishing village on the Cuban coastline that, for the majority of the year, doesn’t attract much attention. Yet for one week in April, this sleepy town seems to come alive as it hosts Cine Pobre, a small and low budget international film festival. There are plenty of places to get a villa in Cuba in this area, so you can enjoy all the creativity and culture that the festival has to offer. The town becomes a hotbed for alternative film makers who come from far and wide to showcase their often impressive work. If you want to be part of something different and a little bit retro, then it is worth making the trip. The town is so small that often even Cubans may struggle to find it, but since 2003 it has been the home to this festival, and people seem to like the tradition. There are no film stars or red carpets, but this does not stop it being a truly memorable event. This international low-budget film festival has made a niche for itself as one of the most interesting events on the alternative film markets.
Tumblr media
Film makers from every continent are represented, and are given the chance to showcase what they can do. The themes of the films are also equally as mixed, with romance, historical, futuristic, funny and much more. The organiser of the event claims that it is an outlet for those who do not want their films conserved by some of the bigger studios, so you know that you are going to be seeing something a little different. The location of Gibara does sometimes put people off, a hefty 800km away from the capital of Havana, but you can get some great Cuba vacation rentals on this side of the country. Make sure you book early, as accommodation can get pretty booked up, especially around the week of the festival. It is this remoteness that gives this event an authentic and intimate charm, with the town itself being named a national monument back in 2004. The Gibarians themselves are proud hosts of the festival, providing a laid back feel that draws in visitors year after year. In addition to films, you may also find a number of music concerts, a showcase of backdrops and painting exhibitions, providing a truly eclectic collection of work. So what are you waiting for, book your Cuba holiday rental today so you don’t miss out!
