Avery Sirin
Alliance Mechanic
See also: Dela Raisaris
The following information is classified. Spectre status required.
PERSONAL HISTORY
Avery Sirin was born in 2154 on the fledgling human colony of Terra Nova to Leilani and Grigol Sirin. The colony expanded slowly at first, and as a child Avery's education was patchy and largely delivered by her parents or neighbours, and focused mostly on important aspects of colony life. From an early age, she developed a keen interest in machinery and technology.
The draw of frontier life eventually attracted an impressive number of first-class educators, and Sirin was one of the first enrolled in Terra Nova's school system in the capital of Scott. Keen to encourage the colony (and boost their own recruitment numbers after the Relay-314 incident) the Alliance provided Avery and many of her peers with full scholarships to the newly established Falconer University in Scott City.
Avery attended the Technical Engineering college in 2172, just as Terra Nova's famous platinum rush was beginning. The sudden influx of people and credits transformed the colony over Avery's four years of study. As many of the new arrivals were non-human, this was Avery's first experience of wider galactic culture. While already committed to two years of Alliance service thanks to the scholarship program, in her third and fourth years of study Avery joined several social clubs designed to build inter-species relationships.
Her parents, however, were distrustful of the new arrivals and resented the industrialisation of their colony. They became reclusive and moved away from the city, causing a rift between them and their daughter that has resulted in a noticeably frosty relationship.
After her graduation in 2176, Sirin was assigned as a flight mechanic on the SSV Hong Kong, where she developed a romantic relationship with a pilot that lasted most of her required two years of service. It ended poorly with the realisation that her partner looked down on her as 'just an engineer'. After breaking it off with him, she applied - and was quickly accepted - to the Alliance Flight School in 2178. After the one year intensive program, she graduated in the top three of her class.
She was reassigned to the SSV Shenyang in 2179 and flew on several pirate suppression missions in the Attican Traverse, protecting Alliance colonies from slavers. Her skill and dedication were recognised with a promotion to 1st Flight Lieutenant in 2181.
In 2183, the Shenyang fought in the Battle of the Citadel against the rogue Spectre Saren and his geth army. Sirin fought with distinction, destroying several geth fighters and helping co-ordinate the defence of a hobbled turian cruiser. On the recommendation of Major Helmud Diaz, Sirin was awarded a commendation and, with the appointment of the new human Councillor in early 2184, was approved for transfer to the turian heirarchy ship Severum of the Council Demilitarization Enforcement Mission in the krogan DMZ.
EQUIPMENT
Alliance Interceptor Fighter
Designed for ship-to-ship combat and missile screening duties, the Alliance SX3 is less hardy than its turian equivalent but significantly more agile.
M-3 Predator sidearm
All flight personnel are assigned a basic sidearm in case of emergency. Avery's pistol range scores are comparatively poor.
SKILLS
While not much of a combatant outside of her cockpit, Avery can use her Alliance-issue omni-tool as a defensive and offensive weapon. She can release an electrical overload to disrupt enemy kinetic barriers, or repurpose the charge as a shield boost for herself. Additionally, she can use the on-board minifacturer to produce a swarm of nanides, which can be used by an invasion program to strip enemy armour, or a restoration program to repair equipment.
PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION
Avery Sirin is a model Alliance soldier. Dedicated to her mission and loyal to her allies, she has a quiet resilience and determination that make her an asset to any operation. Off duty, she is curious and friendly, and makes a noticeable effort to get along with and understand her non-human comrades. Despite her efforts, she can come across emotionally distant and prefers not to talk about herself, which leads some - particularly turians - to think of her as aloof.

“The middle circle was a goldmine,” recalls Pravit Arora, who used to frequent Connaught Place to prank the humans on the streets of Delhi. His latest target were young men in CP’s middle circle trying to make a name using the TikTok app. During the lockdown, as businesses started moving online, so did Pravit. An MLM (multi level marketing) scammer was respectfully invited to his online show only to eventually get roasted.
However, Pravit hasn’t always been an extrovert. Infact, he was the exact opposite during his childhood. He was born with a condition which made him stutter at times, and was ridiculed by his classmates for the way he spoke. “I would avoid people who had mocked me before. That was my naive defence mechanism.” His teachers weren’t the most understanding either. “While reading in class, they’d ask why I’m stuttering, as if I was doing it intentionally or was being nervous. So I started avoiding speaking in class. I would bunk school when I knew that it was going to be my turn to read a chapter in class or would go for a toilet break before my turn.” Naturally, he turned into an introvert during his school days.
But things changed when he went to college. “There was a stand-up comedy event during our college fest. I decided to do it, and I made the audience of 600 go in splits. It was a great morale booster for someone who had avoided public speaking. I then started participating in an inter-college stand-up competition and won many.” Pravit was addicted to stand-ups by the time he graduated from college, and decided to pursue it as a full-time profession. “My 8-5 job was followed by taking the 530pm metro to that day’s stand-up venue in the city, hanging out with the comics till 11 & returning home by 12 so that I could be back in office the next day.” It’s not easy to pursue a profession where the pay is not good until you make it big. “I had a chance to move to the next level though,” he explains. “I was supposed to have my first solo on 18th March, which is a big deal in the comedy circuit. But then, the lockdown was announced on 16th.” After all, life has its own plans!

This teacher schools young students for armed forces
Born and raised in Chandigarh, Samir chooses students from his school based on their performance, personal tests, and parental counselling to take the RIMC entrance exam. Aspiring students from Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab come to Samir for preparation which is free of cost
He is a teacher by the day, but his heart beats for the armed forces. Meet Samir Sharma, a Junior Basic Trainer (JBT) at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 35, Chandigarh, who dedicated a large part of his free time to helping young children get on to the path of joining the armed forces by getting into the Rastriya Indian Military College (RIMC).
Born and raised in Chandigarh, Samir chooses students from his school based on their performance, personal tests, and parental counselling to take the RIMC entrance exam. Aspiring students from Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab come to Samir for preparation which is free of cost.
Students between the ages of 11.5 and 13 are eligible to apply for this test, after which they will be directly admitted to the eighth grade. Samir says that maths, English, and general knowledge are the three most important subjects to master in order to pass the written exam. Samir and his wife train the students for 4 to 5 hours every day, including Sundays. In addition to subjective knowledge and preparation, students receive motivational talks, yoga sessions, and meditation. Samir has a team that accommodates students from other states who want to prepare for this test at an affordable price.
“My father was a Havaldar in the Indian Army and I also dreamt of becoming an Army officer. But fate had something else for me. Now I teach these students and help them accomplish their goals. Majority of the youth today start thinking about their career when they have completed their intermediate but here, we start preparing them when they are in 5th and 6th grade,” said Samir when asked about his inspiration
So far, 13 of his students have passed RIMC, all of whom are from different states. According to Samir, the principal of Senior Secondary School, Davindar Singh Gosaim, is very supportive of this unique initiative. RIMC is an Inter Service Category ‘A’ establishment managed by Army Training Command under the Ministry of Defence. It houses a miniature India with 250 students chosen on merit from each state through a written examination, interview, and medical test.

UC 49.6 - Edinburgh vs Birkbeck
The University of Edinburgh made history last series by becoming the first Scottish side to ever claim the University Challenge title. They’d fallen at the semi-final stage the two years previous, but there were no such problems as they swept aside a strong Durham side in the last four this time around. Going into the final against St Edmund Hall, Oxford they were the clear underdogs, with the Oxonians boasting the player of the tournament in Freddy Leo.
Not to mention the fact that Oxbridge colleges had had a stranglehold on the trophy for the past half-decade, both winning and losing the past five finals - the longest stretch of consecutive Oxbridge winners since the 1970s. But the Scots held their nerve as Teddy Hall mounted their trademark comeback, and Robbie Campbell Hewson, a local Edinburgh lad, won the buzzer race on the last starter for ten to seal the victory. I later won a bottle of wine at a pub quiz because we’d named our team in honour of his heroic exploits and one of the bar staff (in Manchester) happened to have gone to school with him, where they had debated the existence of God in Geography.
It comes as no coincidence that Edinburgh’s recent success comes in the years after the formation of a Quiz Society at the University (they’d not even made it to the televised rounds in the 4 years prior to their semi finals). This is also one of the reasons that Oxford and Cambridge have dominated the show since its beginning, with the inter-collegiate quiz championship having been running for decades. And with other institutions also getting more serious with their own Quiz Socs perhaps Edinburgh’s victory will usher in a new age of supremacy for non-Oxbridge teams, or at least an age of competitiveness.
**The introduction to this review was written at the time, but what follows comes after one of this Blog’s classic month-long semi-accidental detours from working. Anyway, five weeks ago, there was a first starter for ten…**
Edinburgh’s Moon, in this case not the same moon usually shared by Birkbeck, is quickest on the buzzer for the opening question, winning the race to The Leaning Tower of Pisa (I tried to write that in normal font, but there seems to have been an issue with the italics). The Scots take two bonuses on the word tragedy in a literary context (i.e. as could be used to describe this paragraph) giving them a twenty point lead. This vanished as quickly as it had appeared, with Birkbeck replicating the performance on set about US Presidents.
Maclaughlan then puts Edinburgh in charge with a hat-trick of starters, including the first picture round, on musical notes in different clefs. It's odd how automatic the reading of music becomes when one is doing so to play it, to the extent that its all sort of done using an alternative memory that knows exactly what the note means without knowing what note it is. That probably doesn’t make sense, but what I’m trying to say is that even though I can read music it took me a few seconds to figure out what letter corresponded to the sound in my head, like how I can never really remember what my PIN number is unless I’m typing it out.
This gave Auld Reekie a fifty point cushion, which they never relinquished. Whenever Birkbeck looked like threatening, they were there to slap away the hand before it could reach the buzzer, and at the gong the lead was even bigger.
Final Score: Edinburgh 190 - 65 Birkbeck, London
A solid start to their title defence from Edinburgh, though they may need to up their game in subsequent rounds when they come up against tougher opposition.

The Canucks are Attractive 101
by @markstrom, @feistyteee, @tomiath, @nhlmarkstrom, @huttsybobuttsy, @pyatts, @baercheese
This is the ultimate guide for anyone who ever said the Canucks are not attractive. Say goodbye to the world as you know it.
First of all: Swedes. We all know it, Sweden somehow produces the best looking people on this planet and the Canucks have some of them.
1. Jacob Markstrom
Our starting goalie is 6′6 and no one can look at him without melting away. His voice and his sweet Swedish accent is the cutest thing you’ll ever hear. Also: eyebrows. Also: eyes. The curved nose needs a shoutout cause it’s adorable. His face is just a masterpiece of art and anyone who doubts this has, well, no idea of art. We also love to mention his tattoos because damn.
2. Anders Nilsson
Only a fool might think one Swedish goalie is enough. Meet Anders Nilsson, another 6′6 goalie from Sweden. He’s the absolute purest sweetheart, as you can spot a pride flag on both his masks. To represent his gay friends, he says. His hair/beard color combo is different but it works. So. Damn. Well. Plus: the freckles, we love them dearly. Our Swedish goalies support each other at all times, goalie controversy? We don’t know her.
3. Alexander Edler
He looks like Alexander Skarsgård but on skates. Another sweet Swedish blondie who is also the sweetest dad. His hair always looks on point and he does indeed have a nice tan in his pic. Probably best dressed Canuck, his fashion is on fire. What a man.
4. Loui Eriksson
A man also known as The Poodle. His fluffy and curly hair make you want to touch it. His look is sometimes very weird and intimidating and some people might think of Louis Vuitton when hearing his name but remember, this kind of fur is completely Canucks branded.
5-6. Henrik and Daniel Sedin
These are our leading Swedish fish and they do look the same. Some people might say they aren’t really pretty, but hey if you’re into gingers, we got two identical ones for you. We aim to please.
Next: the team dads (Disclaimer: this does not mean they actually have kids). We got plenty of them and they’re mostly cute and obviously good with kids – or still single.
7. Sam Gagner
Sam Gagner aka Gags is a really smiley. GAGNER WITH SCRUFF IS ICONIC. Also smirk smirk smirk. He likes to wear an all white mouthguard that makes his teeth look weird during the game but that’s okay because he needs to protect his perfect smile at all costs! Bonus: He looks so comforting like you can trust him with your life.
8. Brandon Sutter
His sarcasm is A+ comedy. He also looks like he could play the role of a guy everyone falls in love with on The Young and the Restless. He’s just very pretty, hair is soft, light scrub and eyebrows are 👏🏼. His eyes are pretty and they are very kind. Also that little smile/smirk is giving me all kinds of feelings ngl.
9. Christopher Tanev
He most definitely looks better with teeth than without. Tanev is the protective type of guy, he takes pucks to the face for you but mostly for Marky, literally. Long hair don’t care. The soft, dark brown of his eyes can tell that he couldn’t hurt a fly. Bet he takes the ladies out on good dates too.
10. Michael del Zotto
“Michael Del Zotto does wedding photoshoot, does not actually get married”
“New Vancouver Canucks defenceman Michael Del Zotto was named one of our nation's 25 Most Eligible Bachelors”
“Just showed up, plugged in his iPod without anybody asking, just plugged it in”
Michael del Zotto, more commonly known as DJ MDZ has Italian heritage as you might realize in his name. He’s got curls curls curls. Simple, overall goof who often thinks too highly of himself. Further he’s the absolute kind and friendly standard Canadian.
11. Erik Gudbranson
YOU CANT TELL ME HE DOES NOT LOOK LIKE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE GQ COVER!!! Certified male model Erik Gudbranson. God definitely was in a very good mood when he gave him his face. His nose is straight and thin, it just makes you want to tap on it. His smile is very comforting and so is his look. His eyebrows are a statement. This guy knows for sure what a hairstyle is. His sense of fashion is straight out of a fashion magazine. The scrub is just the whipped cream on top, his face is artwork.
12. Markus Granlund
Looks quiet and serious but has a great sense of humor and arguably some of the best Instagram posts. He’s from Finland so if you want a Finnish player we have all ages. He’s got pretty green eyes.
13. Alex Biega
Alex Biega is a cute family man. Great with kids, nice, cute smile, rosy cheeks, nice nose. Con: he has no hair, but you don’t see that when he’s wearing a helmet.
Next up: our young guns! They are all handsome af and just overall lovable. They’re fast and speedy and some of them are thicc af. Save the best for last, our personal favorites.
14. Ben Hutton
1. If you’re ever feeling down, watch a hutton video, he’s happy 24/7 and knows how to have fun. 2. He’s always smiling and his smile can brighten a room. 3. Those dance moves tho. Who knew a “Barbie girl” lip sync could be so hot.
15. Darren Archibald
He is a wall, he is badass and that makes him so ass. His skin looks very soft and his beard does actually look good, not like Guddys. HIS BEARD IS PERFECT. His eyebrows are straight up goals and look at the dark, kind brown of his eyes. Beautiful.
16. Bo Horvat
Bo’s face is chiseled like a god. He carries his dog because he doesn’t want to make him walk. He love to go to the beach with his dog but he doesn’t let him swim because he’s “more of a sinker”. His nose is very cute and his body is damn well trained you can just look at him forever. Bo has very soft short hair and he is often amused by Brock’s non-existant smile.
17. Brendan Gaunce
Baby face Brendan Gaunce has the hairstyle of a guy from elementary school. His lips are so red at all times it’s inhuman. He looks very innocent but it feels like he’s not. He’s just kind of there, no one really knows how or why. Kind of looks like a little baby deer.
18. Tyler Motte
Fact: There are no good pics of him in the inter webs. Tyler “Applesauce” Motte kinda looks like a college kid from a frat. He’s a very fast skater and his penalty killing is absolutely sexie.
19. Nic Dowd
Dowdy is just overall an incredibly handsome guy. That hair line and the wavy fluff, can you see it? Beautiful. The cheek bones? Beautiful. He could work as a male model if he wanted but fortunately he plays hockey to bless us with his beautiful face.
20. Troy Stecher
Stechy has straight up the most adorable dog on this planet. Let’s be real if anyone says Phoebe isn’t their favorite Canuck they’re lying. Kind of an underrated defence man so not a lot of people fully appreciate him. He’s like that rough and tough hockey player that’s also very adorable. His voice is simply great.
21. Brendan Leipsic
Where do we start here? First of all he calls his dog his son and it’s very adorable. Also his curls. CURLS. They match his face so well and they are absolutely adorable. His lips have a perfect shape and look so soft. Generally his face looks just super soft and kind. Also, have you ever noticed his fashion sense? Definitely one of the best dressed guys on the team. He’s also very aggressive on the ice and he hustles and works very well with our favorite d-man Derrick Pouliot. His nickname is delicious country gravy because he works so well with the chicken strip.
22. Brock Boeser
Here we go, it’s time for Prince Charming! The hockey community on here already knows how great he is and look I even found a rare footage of his shiny smile. Whenever he smiles he helps the global warming because his smile melts icebergs. Awesome. He always chews on his mouthguard rather than use it and his mom doesn’t like that. Oh, he also went to prom with a girl who has down syndrome and that’s really the type of guy he is. His flow is legendary and often his hair look like actual gold. He leaked his hair routine and apparently he just uses Head and Shoulders shampoo.
23. Nikolay Goldobin
Goldy is the most adorable Russian puppy you can find anywhere in the NHL. His hair are super fluffy and he doesn’t know how to wear a hat but that only makes him look even more adorable. His nose is so small and round it’s absolute gold! Don’t even get me started on his eyebrows because they are flawless! He got the most innocent and sweet smile out there, he always seems happy. You want to squeeze his cheeks and generally just hug him. It seems like he gives nice hugs.
24. Sven Bärtschi
@baercheese is here to confess her love: “My cute little Swiss boy ♥ my forever favourite & definitely underrated in the looks department & as a hockey player. His nose might not be straight but it’s still cute (I will fight you if you disagree) and his hair is always slicked back to perfection👌🏻 If you haven’t heard him talk you need to because he has a sight accent and it’s my favourite thing in the entire world 😍 He’s also a known dog lover & has a dog named Bear (named after himself basically), what’s not to love?”
25. Derrick Pouliot
Derrick Pouliot, also commonly known as Poulet, chicken strip and super strip is our cutest chubby teddy defenseman and we all know it. He grew up in the middle of nowhere in Saskatchewan and not a lot of people got to appreciate his beauty so far. His hair are the pure fluff and make you just want to run your hands through it. His face looks so soft, his eyes are warm and you just want to squeeze his cheeks ngl. Listen to his voice once and you never want to listen to something else ever again. He is not really tall and his hockey gear looks kind of too big for him, the others love to pat his head. Sometimes his hair get a little curly and it’s just the cutest thing ever. Just by looking at him you can tell that he gives the best and softest hugs ever and he makes you feel comfortable at all times. He is really silent and not outgoing, he needs a lot of time to feel comfortable with new people but that’s totally okay. He’s super cute with kids and just overall totally lovely and kind. A real Canadian.
26. Jake Virtanen
Jake Virtanen is the ultimate snack. He’s half Canadian, half Finnish and 100% babe. The man can skate. Fast. Right into my heart. To quote the great philosopher of our time, Taylor Swift, he’s so gorgeous, it actually hurts. He has the cutest dance moves and the most precious smile. When he does that little slanted smile, I swoon, you swoon, we swoon. Bonus: When he works hard his face turns red and it’s adorable lmao.

Epilogue - Born To Battle
On 01 Oct 2007, I began my new innings in a solemn mood, having acquired my new status as a " Veteran" of the Indian Army. It was the appropriate occasion to recollect all the memories down the memory lane, at various milestones, in my nostalgic journey of 36 years in the "Olive Greens". Besides, I reflected on the formative six years in the "Khakis" in Sainik School Satara , which laid the foundation for my career in the Indian Army. The subsequent three years, again in the "Khakis", at the prestigious National Defence Academy provided tremendous impetus towards my growth in the "Cradle of Military Leadership".
I consider myself fortunate to have shouldered diverse responsibilities in important Command, Staff and Instructional appointments throughout my career. My innings began with distinction as I was the winner of the Silver Gun at School of Artillery. Thereafter, I was thrilled to be initiated through the War experience of 1971 Indo-Pak War in the Eastern Theatre, just after reporting in my parent Regiment (98 Mountain Regiment). Later, after 20 years, I commanded the same Regiment with distinction and was awarded the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Medal. I was also enriched professionally during the initial Staff tenure in the Ace of Spades Division in the LOC environment in J&K & later Staff tenure in the Rashtriya Rifles Force HQ in the Kashmir Valley. I was privileged to be an Instructor Gunnery at School of Artillery for six years, Divisional Officer at the NDA for three years and Directing Staff at Defence Services Staff College Wellington for two years. Each of these tenures gave a feeling of gratification while I performed my roles as a coach, guide and a mentor --- in fact, a Role Model. It was a unique achievement to be proud of as a Gunner, in accordance with the motto ---" Izzat O iqbal."
Next assignment on promotion was the Command of the Artillery Brigade in the LAC environment in Sikkim, which was indeed the pinnacle of my achievement as a Gunner!! Thereafter, I was selected to shoulder the challenging responsibility of DDG (Equipment Management) in Army HQ. It gave me an entirely different exposure at the macro level, while performing my onerous role. In this tenure, I was privileged to be a member of Defence Delegations to USA and Europe. My final assignment as DDG NCC Directorate, Gujarat was equally challenging and rewarding, since it involved "Grooming Tomorrow's Leaders".In the overall analysis, we will always cherish the trove of memories of our entire journey in the "Olive Greens".
During this entire fascinating journey, both myself & Sanjivani, developed innumerous bonds and lifetime associations. It was the result of inter-personal relationships developed on the basis of mutual trust and positive attitude. The adoption of the concept of "Accept, Adapt & Adjust", in any location & in any situation, entailed a lot of sacrifice by Sanjivani and the children. Incidentally, my family had to stay away from me for a total duration of 14 years, spread over the period of my tenures either in Field Area or due to the requirement of college education in Pune. Yet, they faced these stressful moments of separation in a resolute manner and still remember the charm of staying in various types of temporary accommodation. The joy of travel by the Fauji School Bus even in adverse weather conditions, visits to the Military Hospitals in case of any emergency, seeing movies in an Open Air Auditorium and the Fauji Mela activities are some of the wonderful memories. We will always treasure the enthusiastic celebration of the Gunners Day, the Raising Day, all the birthdays/ anniversaries & all the religious festivals within the Fauji family. In retrospect, I do not have any regrets about any of my actions while performing my duty in the best interest of the Organisation. My guiding beacon was always the "Chetwode Motto".
Consequent to my retirement on 30 Sep 2007, we were permitted to retain the 'NCC House' in Ahmedabad for two months. Thereafter, we moved finally to Pune and settled down in our permanent abode ---- "Akash Darshan". The entire process of packing, moving, unpacking and finally settling down in our new 'Home', resulted in the opening of the floodgates of several memories once again. In fact, each of our Fauji Boxes & Cartons of assorted dimensions, had an interesting story to narrate. We recollected with nostalgia, every train journey across the country, either while proceeding on annual leave, posting or on Course. We also remembered our lovely sojourn in various types of accommodation in each of our 20 postings & approx 40 houses!! Such beautiful moments & memories created real magic in our lives. We are grateful to all the members of the unique Fauji family, who were associated with us and provided us regular dose of "Vitamin F"--- in the capacity of Fauji friends forever. We will continue to remember the customs & traditions of the Indian Army and specially treasure the culture and traditions of the Jat Balwans of my Regiment.
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all my seniors for their guidance, the juniors for their willing support and my colleagues for their encouragement during my professional journey. I owe a greater debt of gratitude to Sanjivani who acted as the anchor and provided a secure nest for Ashvini, Nandini & Aditya. All of them made several sacrifices with determination and dedication, which enabled me to pursue my dreams with devotion, always keeping my focus on "Service before Self". Most importantly, ANA proved their worth as precious diamonds during our roller coaster ride. In this context, we appreciate the commendable manner in which both Amit & Aashish ( our sons-in-law ) & Ashwini ( our daughter-in-law ) gelled in our family beautifully. They have adapted the customs of Army life with utmost respect. We are confident that Ashvini & Amit, Nandini & Aashish and Aditya & Ashwini will continue to pass on this legacy to their children. It is already evident since we have observed that all our grand children ( Askand, Avani, Mahi,Isha, Roohi & Abir ) take immense pride in volunteering to be called as the" Balwans"!!
Finally, I am extremely grateful to the Almighty for his blessings while I could attain several distinct identities during my Fauji Innings. The very first identity was being an Ajinkyan of Sainik School Satara. Next identity was a life long recognition of being an ex-NDA (38th Course/Echo Squadron) and winner of President's Silver Medal at the Passing Out Parade. My course was bestowed with the unique identity of being designated as --- " Born to Battle" Course, since immediately after our commission as Second Lieutenant, we were launched into the 1971 Indo-Pak War. School of Artillery gave me another recognition, as the Silver Gunner of my Course. My Regiment conferred on me another identity, with the nickname of "Jat Balwan". Finally and most importantly, after 36 years of unblemished service as a Gunner, I earned the prestigious identity as a Veteran of the Indian Army. I consider it as a Badge of Honour & tribute to the blood, toil, tears and sweat, while upholding the sanctity of our National Flag, in accordance with the ethos of the Indian Army --- "Naam, Namak, Nishan". I wish to conclude with an Ode to the Veterans...
WE ARE VETERANS
We left home as teenagers for an unknown voyage.
We bade 'Au Revoir' to friends & family.
We made new friends and extended our family and enriched our memories.
We loved the Nation enough to defend it & protect it with our own lives.
We grew up quickly, but, somehow, never really grew up.
We were happy to receive letters from our loved ones but seldom got through on a phone call.
We share an emotional bond with each other that most people never experience and very few understand.
We were welcomed home by smiles, but we mourned the loss of the families, whose loved ones never came home.
We exchange small gestures to remind each other that we were in the same boat on the turbulent sea, but we survived.
We would like to thank each other for placing 'Service before Self'. We stand tall and proud because we have earned a priceless gift to be called a Veteran of the Indian Army.
