SEGUNDA FEIRA
Quando acordou naquela manhã, Maria sentiu uma estranha sensação. Como se sua força física tivesse sido esgotada. Seu corpo pesou uma tonelada no instante em que abriu os olhos. O que é isso? Pensou olhando pro próprio corpo. Na cabeça uma estranha dor e em seu peito havia um desconforto como se um balão tivesse descido pela sua garganta e se alojado em seu esôfago, travando-lhe a respiração. Parou por breves segundos e tateou em volta procurando o relógio que despertara a pouco.
POHA! Estou atrasada de novo! CARALHO, TODO DIA ISSO! Lamentou em fúria. Por um breve instante esqueceu todos os incômodos que estava sentindo, o peso da responsabilidade era maior nesse momento. Voltou a si pouco depois. Mas o que aconteceu pra eu estar assim? Pensou. Caminhou em direção ao banheiro e se olhou no espelho esperando o pior, esperando se ver destruída, mas constatou que não havia nada de diferente em seu rosto, tudo continuava como deveria. Infelizmente, pensou num breve surto de consciência e raiva.
Tomou banho rápido e se arrumando as pressas para ir ao trabalho, que detestava, diga-se de passagem, pensou na noite anterior e nos possíveis acontecimentos que poderiam tê-la deixado naquele estado. Nada! Não havia nada que justificasse. A noite anterior tinha sido boa. Nenhum excesso. Boas conversas. Pessoas amigas ao redor. Um pouquinho que álcool a mais, é verdade, mas puta que pariu, agora tem que trabalhar igual uma puta e não pode beber uma cerveja?! Já é demais também. Ah, foda-se o trabalho também! A vida não é só trabalhar! Esbravejou.
Estava numa crise, seus pensamentos e sensações se misturavam a ponto de não saber mais o que estava sentindo, falando ou pensando. Tudo estava ocorrendo ao mesmo tempo. Uma ressaca moral agora a havia abraçado com força. Sentia culpa, raiva e desanimo. Respirou fundo por alguns minutos, se acalmou o suficiente para deixar sua casa e ir em direção ao trabalho. Seguiu.
Entrando no escritório em que trabalhava, deu um bom dia apagado aos colegas. De cabeça baixa e constrangida pelo atraso não percebeu se foi respondida. Todos pareciam muito concentrados naquela manhã. Ainda bem, passou despercebida. Barulhos de teclados de computador e o sol cinza de uma segunda feira deprimente entrava pela pequena janela do lado de sua mesa descolorido todas as coisas que os olhos alcançavam. Enfim, começou mais uma semana, pensou triste se acomodando em sua cadeira.
Na cabeça, um incômodo estranho que não conseguia entender direito o que era. Não era uma dor de cabeça comum. Nunca havia sentido isso antes. Alcançou em sua gaveta um remédio e tomou na tentativa de amenizar a dor. Após vinte minutos entra na sala aos prantos uma colega de trabalho. Todos assustados pararam imediatamente seus afazeres e direcionam suas atenções a ela, se levantando e se aproximando dela para acolhe-la. Vendo a atitude dos colegas resolve fazer o mesmo e prestar solidariedade a amiga.
Após um breve instante, já cercada por toda a equipe que lhe olhava preocupada esperando alguma informação para entender o que estava a ocorrer, eis que entre um soluço e outro, a colega revela a triste notícia: Maria havia morrido num acidente na noite anterior! Todos se desesperam. Maria olha fixamente pra colega por alguns segundos ao mesmo tempo que tenta buscar em sua memória alguém conhecido de mesmo nome. Busca em vão.
Ao tentar perguntar então a um outro colega sobre a tal Maria percebe que não está sendo ouvida. Tentou mais uma vez, nada. Seus olhos se abriram em desespero, sentiu um leve enjoo, um frio subiu pela sua coluna. Temeu o pior. Afastando-se do grupo quase que em um salto para trás, conclui: estava morta! A dor de cabeça aumentou absurdamente, seus olhos fecharam em dor, não sentiu mais as mãos e ouvindo agora de muito longe, a voz de um dos colegas que revela sua causa mortis: traumatismo craniano.

Moving muesli from magical to mainstream

When I was much younger, muesli was just a very expensive breakfast cereal. Although generally associated with wealthier friends and colleagues, ‘Swiss Familia’ was also a shortcut to being well-fed. Whenever one was in a supermarket that carried it, one was tempted to buy it. The back-to-nature crowd, of course mixed up their concoction of oats, nuts, raisins, berries and desiccated or dehydrated fruit themselves. At one time, there was a shop in Manali that sold homemade
Kellogg
 that we would bring back to the big city. One of the first branded muesli products packed in a box and distributed to special food stores across the country emanated from a farmhouse in Bengaluru. If I recall correctly, it was promoted by a former Bollywood actress.
For much of its history, muesli has not only been seen as a wonder food but also as a cure for just about anything. Around 1900, Swiss physician Dr Bircher-Benner, known as the first modern advocate of this whole-food nutrient-rich mixture, thought that most illnesses affected by gut health, immunities and cardiovascular functions, could be alleviated if not cured by exercise and a more nutritious diet. He was a forerunner of the currently widespread profession of functional doctors, who cure everything from blood pressure to high sugar and obesity with a combination of exercise and a holistic diet.
The first mass-produced muesli was introduced in 1959 by Swiss company Somalon, (now known as bio-familia). It used the Bircher-Benner recipe and was soon exported to Germany, Austria, England, the Netherlands and the US. In the 1970s, the company introduced ‘crunchy muesli’, similar to today’s granolas with added sugar and oils – specifically in response to American taste preferences for sugary convenience foods.
Needless to say, muesli has caught on, with many local and global brands offering it as a breakfast convenience food and even as a desi alternative to processed, sugar-coated cereals that come in various shapes and colors. Conventional breakfast cereals that have caught on, particularly amongst the Indian urban upper middle class, have generally faced a tough battle against the traditional favourites of poha, parathas, idlis, dosas, uttappams and even the humble roadside bread pakora.
At first, there was resistance to conventional processed cereals because of the exorbitant price of global brands in fancy packaging, but local alternatives soon emerged in simple flexible pouches. With prosperity, and the increasing obsession with fitness, weight loss and better nutrition, the magical muesli came into the markets as a branded, healthier and more expensive convenience breakfast option. As supermarkets and hypermarkets arrive and proliferate, an explosion of muesli options have arrived and are reaching the kirana store shelves.
The muesli mania amongst food brands and start-ups has become competitive. Organized brands are attempting to bring the prices of this holistic and special mixture within the economic reach and taste preferences of a country that is full of traditional and more fascinating options but which require a working kitchen and considerable effort. Apart from the change in lifestyles that demand instant and convenient but more nutritious solutions, the cultural impetus for organic, vegetarian and coarse grains such as ragi has further fueled this category.
In an up-market hypermarket in Delhi, one can find at least 10 brands and more than 20 varieties of muesli – from chocolate-coated, to added sugar-free to sugar-less. The next steps are visible – to maintain the convenience while offering this special holistic in variations that range from with and without a particular ingredient to address allergens and sugarless varieties that address concerns such as rapidly growing diabetes.
As the muesli category catches on, and the flavors and options multiply, packaging has assumed a more important role. The need to project the new variants and special ingredients on the shelf increases as does the need for coming up with more price-competitive and sustainable packs in a choice of sizes, formats and price points.
Thus one now sees the plain plastic jars with labels and boxes with plastic bags replaced by attractively printed pouches with barrier properties as muesli becomes a mainstream staple of the holistic diet. However, to retain its mystique as a natural and holistic nutrient-rich fitness product, the plastic packaging will have to be recyclable and perhaps also reclosable in a way to keep out moisture. Nevertheless, the high value of the product and its premium positioning, allows food companies to use it as an example of organic high nutrition with convenience delivered in the new sustainable packaging to come.

Oh how it would be to live a life where everyday I have to wake up to make a cup of instant coffee and just sit on my soft powder green or blue sofa, my dog is lying next to my feet giving my a gentle tickle whenever he moves, the disco ball on my ceiling is reflecting the sunlight coming through the the huge windows of my balcony with fresh smell of poha coming from the neighbouring house. I sit and get comfy till I feel a breeze of breath on my neck followed by a gentle kiss from my husband who has just woken up. He looks like the most handsome man with his feathered messy hair, bulby eyes and red cheeks. He sits next to me with a book in his hand and eventually funds himself comfortable on my lap with his face softly pressing my stomach. He looks at me for 2 seconds until I notice his eyes following the dots on my face and just smiles at me. I graze my hands through his straight wavy hair and it reminds us of the college days where we used to be in this same situation at night in a rented apartment with a thrilling fear of someone knowing. We talked about love, now we're living it, we talked about a home, now we're living in it. Before we both get up and go to our jobs he still pulls me in for a sloppy kiss that I always get annoyed by and he smirks like he always does. We're happy, we're content, we're still in love, we're together.
