Dubai Resident Convicted of Sexual Assault in Singapore
Depression and other mental health issues can drive people to drastic actions, as illustrated by a recent story from Channel News Asia. According to the report, a man from India assaulted the nurse of his wife, a cancer patient in Singapore. The incident later resulted in his conviction on the charge of sexual assault.
A VISIT TO SINGAPORE
Pillai Shyam Kumar Sadashivan and his wife lived in Dubai. The 47-year-old man worked as a managing director of a steel company; but after his wife became ill with cancer, their prosperous life changed. In December 2016, the couple travelled to Singapore, searching for more effective treatments for the wife’s cancer.
While in Singapore, Pillai hired a private nurse to care for his wife. The nurse worked independently through MedXcess Healthcare, and she agreed to visit the couple’s rented flat and help with the wife’s daily care.
THE ASSAULT ON THE NURSE
When the 25-year-old nurse came to the flat, she discovered that her patient was napping, so she went into the living area with Pillai to speak with him about his wife’s medical needs. Pillai began to turn their talk towards sex. He asked for “extra services,” and request that she pull up her shirt.
The nurse said no and placed her arms across her chest; but Pillai seized her blouse, ripping a button off, and put his hand down her shirt. He touched her thighs as well, but she rejected his advances.
THE AFTERMATH OF THE ASSAULT
The nurse reported the incident to her employers, who notified the police and terminated the contract. However, the damage had been done, and the traumatised nurse had to seek counselling to deal with the aftereffects of the incident. She suffered from ” unexplained crying, insomnia, lost or reduced appetite, feelings of worthlessness,” as well as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression in Singapore, even as Pillai returned to Dubai. Pillai’s wife stayed in Singapore to continue her treatment.
Pillai faced charges of sexual assault and of insulting the modesty of a woman. He pled guilty, and on October 13, 2017, he was sentenced to just seven months of jail time and three strokes of the cane.
THE ATTACKER’S MENTAL STATE
It is likely that Pillai himself suffered from depression, or from additional mental health issues that could have been diagnosed by a qualified psychiatrist in Singapore or Dubai. By his own admission, he had not been intimate with his wife for months due to her illness, and watching her health decline probably took a toll on his own mental state. Unfortunately, he did not seek help or support for his mental condition, and he inflicted serious emotional injury on a young woman.

My mother judges me based on these little things
1. Saying that the weather is hot. Singapore is a tropical country and the temperature averages at about 30C daily. Of course it's hot and humid. Yet when I want to turn on the air-conditioning because I'm sweating, she often forces me to eat some traditional Chinese medicine supplements because she thinks I'm feeling hot due to some imbalance in my body. She's not a trained TCM doctor. Can't even talk about the weather in this house without being judged. The irony is that if we have guests over, she will happily turn the aircon on for them and treat them better than she treats me. I realised that's a trait of narcissistic family members - my late grandmother (on my mother's side) was like that too. So I'm sure my mom picked up some traits from her.
2. Coming back soon after leaving the house to pick up something I've forgotten, like my train card or water bottle. It happens just a few times a year. Purely based on this, she insisted that it means that my memory is poor because of some deficiency. Once I forgot my card, the next day she immediately bought back some gingko supplements. She made me take those supplements but I didn't and managed to hide the fact that I didn't.
3. Symptoms of my mild chronic health issues. Once I had eczema on my hands. My doctor said it's likely because I was washing my hands too much since I cooked a lot at that period of time. Yet, my mom insisted it's because that I didn't wipe the steering wheel of her car so I developed skin issues. Also, she blames me for my chronic digestive issues when I was in my mid-20s - she thinks it's due to me not meditating enough (she's part of some New Age meditation group).
4. Having insomnia. I have sleep issues now and then and my doctor had already told me it's due to my hyperthyroidism. My mom insists that it's because I didn't listen to her TCM nonsense (I believe in TCM but I will only listen to a licensed TCM doctor) and didn't practice her suggested alternative treatments. Oh and yes, it's also because I didn't meditate enough.
5. Wanting to take my medication as my doctor directed. My mother will always try to dissuade me from taking them as she wants me to practice her alternative treatments (which doesn't work 80% of the time for me). Some of her suggestions like massages, moxibustion, did work to some extent for me. But since she's not a licensed TCM doctor, I refuse to listen to her all the time. Can't even practice my right to take medication without having to defend myself in this house. 
6. Whenever I feel unwell, I want to see a doctor like any regular human being would. However, as usual, she insists that it's because 1) I didnt meditate enough and 2) I didn't listen to her. Can't even get access to healthcare without drama in this house.
7. Going out with friends. Once I wanted to meet my group of friends at a friend's cafe. The owner of the cafe (male, married) is also from the same clique so our friends used to meet up there to show support for his cafe. I told my mom that I'm heading out with friends and she suddenly started scolding me. She accused me for trying to have an affair with a married man. I immediately wished that I was orphaned. I still do sometimes. 
There are many more things so I'll write more about them later. I'm just looking forward to the day I finally save enough money to move out. Sometimes I wish I didn't have parents. Singapore's housing law allows orphaned people to buy affordable housing at age 21. I wish I could.
