How an Estate Planning Attorney in Marietta GA Can Protect Your Legacy
Tumblr media
In the intricate landscape of life planning, the importance of securing your legacy cannot be overstated. An effective estate plan is not merely a legal requirement; it is a thoughtful arrangement that ensures your wishes are honored, your loved ones are protected, and your assets are distributed according to your intentions. An estate planning attorney Marietta GA can play a pivotal role in this process, providing the expertise and guidance necessary to navigate the complexities of estate planning. This article delves into how engaging an estate planning attorney can safeguard your legacy and provide peace of mind for you and your family.
Understanding the Scope of Estate Planning
Before exploring the specifics of how an estate planning attorney can help, it is essential to understand what estate planning involves. Estate planning encompasses a range of legal processes and documents designed to manage an individual's assets during their lifetime and after their death. This includes the creation of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives.
The goal of estate planning is to ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, while also minimizing tax liabilities and avoiding potential disputes among heirs. A well-structured estate plan can prevent the need for probate, streamline the distribution process, and provide clarity for your loved ones during a time of grief.
The Value of Local Expertise
When searching for an estate planning attorney Marietta GA, local expertise is a critical factor to consider. An attorney familiar with Georgia’s estate laws can provide insights that are essential for crafting a robust estate plan. They understand the specific legal requirements, tax implications, and probate processes that may affect your estate, ensuring that your plan complies with state regulations.
Local attorneys also have a deeper understanding of the community and its unique dynamics, allowing them to tailor your estate plan to reflect your values and circumstances. This personalized approach is vital for creating a plan that truly protects your legacy.
Comprehensive Estate Planning Services
1. Drafting Wills
One of the primary functions of an estate planning attorney is to draft a will. A will is a legal document that outlines how your assets will be distributed upon your death. It allows you to specify beneficiaries, appoint an executor to manage your estate, and name guardians for minor children.
An estate planning attorney will ensure that your will is legally valid and reflects your wishes accurately. They will guide you through the process of making difficult decisions, helping you articulate your intentions clearly. This comprehensive approach results in a will that provides certainty and peace of mind for you and your family.
2. Establishing Trusts
In addition to wills, estate planning attorneys often assist clients in establishing trusts. Trusts are legal entities that hold assets for the benefit of specific individuals or organizations. They can serve various purposes, such as avoiding probate, minimizing estate taxes, and protecting assets from creditors.
An estate planning attorney Marietta GA will help you determine the type of trust that best suits your needs. For example, a revocable living trust allows you to maintain control over your assets during your lifetime while ensuring a smooth transition of those assets to your beneficiaries upon your death. Trusts can be particularly useful for individuals with complex estates or specific wishes regarding asset distribution.
3. Planning for Incapacity
Estate planning is not solely about what happens after your death; it also includes planning for potential incapacity. An estate planning attorney can help you prepare essential documents, such as durable powers of attorney and healthcare directives.
A durable power of attorney designates someone you trust to make financial decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. Similarly, a healthcare directive outlines your wishes regarding medical treatment and end-of-life care. These documents ensure that your preferences are respected, even when you cannot communicate them directly.
Navigating Tax Implications
One of the complexities of estate planning involves understanding the tax implications associated with your estate. An estate planning attorney can help you navigate the intricacies of estate and inheritance taxes, ensuring that your estate plan minimizes tax liabilities for your beneficiaries.
They will guide you in implementing strategies to protect your assets from excessive taxation, such as gifting strategies or the establishment of trusts. By proactively addressing tax considerations, an estate planning attorney can help preserve more of your wealth for your loved ones.
Conflict Resolution and Family Dynamics
Family dynamics can complicate the estate planning process, and disputes may arise among heirs regarding the distribution of assets. An estate planning attorney can help you address potential conflicts proactively, ensuring that your estate plan minimizes the risk of disputes.
By clearly articulating your wishes in your estate plan and providing guidance on family matters, an attorney can help maintain harmony among family members. They can also serve as neutral mediators in the event of disputes, working to resolve conflicts amicably and preserving family relationships.
Ongoing Support and Plan Updates
Estate planning is not a one-time event; it requires regular review and updates as your life circumstances change. Major life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of children, or significant changes in financial status may necessitate adjustments to your estate plan. An estate planning attorney can help you navigate these changes and ensure that your plan remains relevant and effective.
By engaging an estate planning attorney Marietta GA, you gain a trusted advisor who will encourage regular reviews of your estate plan and assist you in making any necessary updates. This ongoing support is invaluable in ensuring that your legacy is protected throughout your lifetime.
The Emotional Aspect of Estate Planning
While estate planning is often viewed as a financial or legal process, it also carries significant emotional weight. Discussing mortality and making decisions about your legacy can be challenging and uncomfortable. An estate planning attorney understands these complexities and provides a compassionate, supportive environment for these discussions.
A skilled attorney will take the time to listen to your concerns and help you articulate your wishes in a way that honors your values and relationships. This personalized approach fosters trust and confidence, allowing you to navigate the estate planning process with greater ease.
Conclusion
In conclusion, an estate planning attorney Marietta GA is essential for protecting your legacy and ensuring that your wishes are honored. With their local expertise and comprehensive services, these attorneys can help you navigate the complexities of estate planning, from drafting wills and establishing trusts to planning for incapacity and minimizing tax implications.
By engaging an estate planning attorney, you are investing in peace of mind, knowing that your affairs are in order and your loved ones will be cared for according to your wishes. The personalized service and ongoing support provided by an estate planning attorney can make all the difference in crafting a plan that reflects your values and protects your legacy for future generations. Ultimately, effective estate planning is about more than just legal documents; it is about creating a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of those you cherish.

Changing the Equation: Moving Math Education Forward
How do we measure success? How do we acquire learning? And who leads that learning?
How do we move math education forward?
These are some of the questions that educators from across Ohio and beyond came together to discuss this spring. On Wednesday, May 22, 2019, MIND Research Institute hosted an event for thought leaders to gather and have deep conversations around how to change the face of math education.
Yesterday we hosted the MIND Research Institute in the PAST Innovation Lab. The focus was "Changing the Equation: Moving Math Education Forward”. It was a day full of speakers and exercises designed to help inspire creative and rigorous problem solving. #ChangeMathEd pic.twitter.com/AnpQbVJFbB
— The PAST Foundation (@pastfoundation) May 23, 2019
The day kicked off with Brian Coffey, Senior Academic Director for MIND. Brian set the stage for what was to come with a chat about belief. As a former elementary school principal, Brian has a lot of experience with empowering students and educators to believe in themselves. Attendees were encouraged to believe in their ability to affect change and to look for opportunities to innovate at their own schools and districts.
Kicking off our Ohio Summit with @PrincipalCoffey! He’s introducing a vision for moving math education forward that we’ll explore throughout the day. #ChangeMathEd pic.twitter.com/pLuFOW2e3K
— MIND Research Institute (@MIND_Research) May 22, 2019
Keynote speaker, Nigel Nisbet, Vice President of Content Creation for MIND, really got the ball rolling with The Neuroscience of Deeper Learning. He relayed how neuroscience has the power to transform mathematics and learning for all: students, teachers and parents.
Nigel also spoke about the importance of moving beyond procedural math and into creative and rigorous problem solving. He left the audience with insights on how to create engaging classroom environments to promote student success in the 21st century.
Math hasn’t changed - but the demands on our students have. How many people are employed to be good at procedural math? Before computers, many people were. Today computers do that work. #ChangeMathEd pic.twitter.com/9qCLJrEotU
— Jodie Bailey (@BaileyJodie) May 22, 2019
Then, it was time for the first breakout sessions of the day. Guests were able to choose from three different themes for a more focused conversation. In the different sessions, participants discussed how to move beyond “right answers” and focus on mathematics, opportunities for teachers and students to be co-learners, and the impact on learning when we give students the freedom to fail.
Take Jim Bruner, Project Manager for The Past Foundation, and Dr. Steve Lewis, Assistant Professor of STEM at Marietta College’s session, for example. They hosted a discussion around how we think students acquire learning. Jim and Steve had us participate in a lesson on tai chi. Before any math was mentioned, they had us up and moving around the room—learning different tai chi moves.
Once we sat back down, Jim and Steve had us lead our own learning. What mathematical concepts could we relate back to the moves we had just demonstrated? Each group naturally came up with a different answer and we all learned from each other. Pretty interesting way to learn about math, right? We thought so!
What does Tai chi have to do with math? It makes a creative entry point! We found so many different mathematical concepts present in Tai chi! How can you turn your hobbies into mathematical learning opportunities? #ChangeMathEd pic.twitter.com/UsC86nRM9E
— MIND Research Institute (@MIND_Research) May 22, 2019
In the afternoon, Brandon Smith, Lead Mathematician and Product Director for MIND, got the crowd thinking about building true enjoyment in math. And he did it in true MIND fashion—through games! While attendees were in their breakout sessions, Brandon laid out all sorts of puzzles and our MathMINDs Games for guests to experience.
50+ adults in business attire laughing and playing is quite a sight to behold. But it’s actually a fairly common scene when MIND is involved. Everywhere you looked, participants were collaborating, concentrating, exploring different solutions, and celebrating when they discovered answers. Brandon brought everyone back together to reinforce that this is what creative mathematical problem solving can look like for students and teachers alike.
It’s all fun and games (and math!) at lunchtime. Ohio Summit attendees learned about building true enjoyment in math from @bds_math. And then, we started playing! #ChangeMathEd pic.twitter.com/43yGmi0YnC
— MIND Research Institute (@MIND_Research) May 22, 2019
As the event wound down, attendees had the opportunity to break into discussion groups again. They joined with facilitators to ignite the ideas they’d formed during the day to move math education forward. Lots of great conversations were had around what immediate actions could be taken once individuals returned to their schools and districts.
Ts discussing how they measure student success #ChangeMathEd @MIND_Research @amillia_chianti pic.twitter.com/W1qNTpMl6k
— Twana Young (@Twanayoung) May 22, 2019
We had one last surprise for everyone at the end of the day—3rd and 4th grade students from Toll Gate Elementary joined us! The students sat with our guests while Meagan Erwin, an educator with Columbus City Schools, introduced ST Math Chats. Students then participated in a live lesson and our guests got to see creative and rigorous problem solving through the kids’ eyes.
Watching students think deeply, try solutions, receive informative feedback, and then try a different solution reiterated the themes attendees had experienced throughout the day. It’s amazing to see what kids can teach themselves, their peers and even their teachers when given the opportunity!
Love seeing @PLSD students from Toll Gate be a part of the @STMath #ChangeMathEd event and working side by side with Ohio Educators to improve Math instruction. @MIND_Research #PLSDProud pic.twitter.com/nBfUQuYhm3
— Brian Seymour (@SeymourEducate) May 22, 2019
Thanks to all of our attendees, our venue sponsor, The Past Foundation, and our event partners, Pickerington Schools and Olentangy Local School District.
And a huge thank you to all of our wonderful guest speakers: Jim Bruner, Steve Lewis, Dr. Jodie Bailey, Jonily Zupancic, Keisha Slaughter, Theodore Chao, Annika Moore, Holly Lavender, Dr. Sheli Smith, Marcy Raymond, Kayla Mickens, Meagan Erwin and Kim Faulk!
Together, and with continued opportunities to collaborate, we’ll continue to move math education forward.

7th-grader's science project finds cancer-fighting chemicals in green tea
Stephen Litt has been conducting science experiments since he was in first grade. Every year, the projects became more and more complicated — until finally, as a 7th grader, he came across something that gained national attention.
The 12-year-old boy from Marietta, Georgia, discovered evidence that chemicals in green tea may have cancer-fighting potential.
For this year’s science fair project, he tested epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), an antioxidant in green tea, to determine whether it could prevent breast cancer tumors in planaria, a type of flatworms.
The research, which was part of his award-winning project for the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair, earned the boy praise from scientists across the country. He was even invited to go on a private tour of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University while on spring break in Boston two weeks ago.
“It’s not a cure for cancer,” his father, Lesley Litt, who trained as a chemist and assisted with the project, told CBS News. “What he found is a way to prevent cancer in these worms from those specific carcinogens. Their DNA is not the same as humans, but a professor at Tufts and a few others, they want to know what’s going on — they want to help.”
Stephen Litt’s project won 6 awards at the Georgia Science and Engineering fair.
Lesley Litt
Stephen was originally interested in researching the malaria virus after reading about it in class back in October.
“I said, ‘Uh, no, we can’t bring that stuff into the house — it’s dangerous,’” his father said.
Around that time, two close family friends were diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s when Stephen shifted his focus.
“He started reading about cancer, specifically breast cancer,” Litt explained. “He found an article about how the Japanese might have lower cancer rates because of green tea. He then read an article in Live Science about green tea’s anti-cancer secrets.”
The article noted that in Japan, where green tea consumption is high, prostate and breast cancer rates are about three times lower when compared with the United States, according to the World Health Organization, although many other factors may play a role.
Is there really a connection between green tea and fighting cancer? Stephen had to find out.
Stephen Litt works on a science experiment.
Lesley Litt
So the boy, with help from his father, set up a lab in his house. Stephen ordered 100 planaria, which he divided into 4 groups. Each group was exposed to a different substance over the course of four weeks.
One group was exposed to EGCG; the second group was exposed to EGCG for 24 hours and then two carcinogens (Stephen’s dad handled the hazardous stuff); the third group was exposed to the two types of carcinogens; and the fourth — as a control group — was only exposed to spring water.
Carefully, Stephen studied the changes the worms experienced, documenting every tumor grown over the month-long period. By the end of the experiment, Stephen determined that the worms exposed to EGCG and carcinogens didn’t grow any tumors, proving the antioxidant may actually help fight cancer growth in worm cells.
“We’re very far off from finding a cure for humans,” Litt clarified. “But this really does advance the research and give us more insight into what’s going on with human cancer cells.”
While it’s a good start, Litt says his son’s study is just beginning.
Stephen Litt is active in karate
Lesley Litt
Next year, he’s hoping to get a better microscope and hopes to transplant real breast cancer tissue into these worms.
“He could use another year or two, hopefully at a unviersity lab,” said Litt, explaining that his future research will become more complicated.
In the mean time, Stephen has plenty to keep him busy. Not only is he a straight-A student, he’s a Boy Scout, working on becoming a black belt in karate, he plays tennis, and he’s one of the top oboe players in the state.
“Sometimes he even has time to play on his computer,” Litt said.
His parents couldn’t be more proud of the aspiring chemical engineer, especially with his most recent science experiment.
“He got results, which you don’t always get,” Litt said.
