SV’s Peng 20 – The Best Looks From The Gram This Past Week (23/09/19 – 30/09/19)
It’s the start of a new week and the end of a new month. While fall season has kicked off in full gear, our favorite style stars seem to be holding on to summer like their lives wardrobes depend on it.
While Orange Culture’s Adebayo Oke-Lawal and actress, Ini Dinma-Okojie, opted for other primary colors on the wheel, the predominant color we saw this past week happens to be Yellow. From South…

If you’re an avid watcher of Nigerian TV or just like me, you like to hop from blog to blog in search of entertainment or fashion inspiration, then you’ve definitely come across the uber-stylish TV presenter, Mimi Onalaja.
Mimi Onalaja in Fablane by Derin Source: Instagram/MimiOnalaja
Mimi popped up on our radar when she started hosting VVIP events on Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife. The lifestyle and events coverage show ensured that Mimi was a regular fixture at all the top events in Lagos – which translates to a ton of red carpet looks. While most presenters start out trying to figure out their style in the public eye with more fails than passes, Mimi’s confidence and intuition made her an instant style dominator and fashion fave.
A huge supporter of the Nigerian fashion movement, Mimi has been known to rock Nigerian designers both on and off duty, telling Vanguard Allure, “Everyone knows I love my Fablane by Derin! I’m also totally in love with Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Tubo, Andrea Iyamah & Sisiano and for everyday, My T5s, Ms Beefab, and Ayaba have my heart. I could go on and on, to be honest”.
One name that stands out from her long list of Nigerian designers is SV fave, Fablane by Derin. Everyone who follows Mimi’s impeccable style either on the red carpet, blogs or her carefully curated Instagram page, already knows about her love for Fablane. Just like her famous stylish friend, Ini Dima-Okojie, Mimi and Fablane have jointly created fashion moments that we doubt we’re going to forget anytime soon.

It doesn’t matter if she’s grabbing lunch with the squad, enjoying Lagos nightlife, attending a family event in Ogun state or standing in front of a camera with her show face on, 80 percent of the time, our girl is in a piece from Fablane by Derin.
Both designer and star are actually best buddies who vacation together, #Jealous #INeedNewFriends. Derin clearly understands what works for the upcoming actress and TV host. From bold statement-making yellows and whites to intricately structured print dresses, they always leave us begging for more looks.

Charlize Theron and Dior, Bella Hadid and Virgil Abloh, Genevieve Nnaji and Tiffany Amber, we all love a good designer/celebrity friendship, especially when they birth iconic looks.
Often times, these celebrities might be contracted to wear a particular designer (this is common in Hollywood) as can be seen in the case of Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior deal, and Emma Stone’s Louis Vuitton deal. However, sometimes a stylist pulls a piece from a designer and the star loves it so much, they decide to pitch their tent in the designer’s studio and make it their closet.
Ini in Fablane by Derin at the 2018 AMVCA
In less than 6 years, Ini Dinma-Okojie (Battleground, It’s Her Day) has worked her way to the top of Nollywood with several TV shows and box office record holders to her name. While she joins Somkele Idhalama and Adesua Etomi-Wellington as some of the women leading the charge to take over Nollywood, Ini has also become a fashion favorite who is known for serving back-to-back looks off and on the red carpet.
From IAmIsigo to Lanre Dasilva Ajayi, Ini has donned some of the biggest names in fashion. However, her style story will not be complete without the designer, Fablane By Derin.
Ini attending a movie premiere in Fablane by Derin
The two whose friendship runs deep, have collaborated on so many looks, it’s hard to keep track. Ini’s devotion to the label is unwavering as she has been spotted in custom pieces from the brand at the AMVCAs, movie premieres, on set and also going as far as taking pieces for a road trip to her village in Edo State, and a movie festival in Paris.
Ini in Paris, wearing Fablane by Derin
What makes these two a perfect match? Well for one, Fablane understands Ini’s body perfectly, making it easy to create looks that flatter and accentuate her best assets, while managing to keep it fresh and interesting each time. Who can forget their take on the Mafia theme of Kemi Adetib’s King Of Boys’ movie premiere or the black and white ensemble Ini wore while sightseeing in Paris?
Ini attending the MET themed premiere of Ocean’s 8 in Fablane by Derin
Considering their constant support for each other, and shared love for fashion and figure-hugging pieces, we can definitely see these two working together for a very long time to come.

From Darren Star’s Sex and the City, to the Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman fronted murder mystery, Big Little Lies, the world is finally realizing that female fronted stories have an audience and are relevant now, more than ever. While Nollywood has tried the “group of friends navigating love and life” storyline with shows like Before 30. It has always ended up being panned for its story archs which seem contrived, or all around bad acting on the part of its stars.

Ever since it was announced that Arese Ugwu’s groundbreaking financial book, The Smart Money Woman, was being made into a TV show, we’ve been itching to see what it would look like. The book which follows a group of women in Lagos and hands out much needed financial nuggets to millennials, was critically and commercially successful.
With a cast that includes Osas Ighodaro-Ajibade, Ini-Dinma Okojie, Lala Akindoju, Toni Tones, Sharon Ooja, Eku Edewor, Timini Egbuson and Instagram sensation, Temisan “Taymesan” Emmanuel, this is by far the most anticipated show of the year.

Just like Sex and the City which made a name for its incredible jawdropping styling, Smart Money Woman, is shaping up to be one show that would serve us major looks and have its audience gagging. We’ve seen some stills from behind the scenes and we can confirm that the styling team is ready to step on necks!
While we are thrilled and proud that women are finally getting to tell their stories BY THEMSELVES (The show has a female director, writer and producers), we are also head over heels in love with how the show plans to merge high fashion and TV.
Here are some of the looks we’ve spotted on set

Rita Dominic and Lanre Dasilva Ajayi; Ini Dinma Okojie and Fablane by Derin; and Eku Edewor’s love for Jewel by Lisa, Designer, and muse continues to focus on the symbiotic relationship between our favorite stars and the designers that help them churn out incredible red carpet moments.
Adesua Etomi Source: Instagram/MaiAtafo
Adesua Etomi is undoubtedly one of the most in-demand actresses in Nollywood. Ever since her compelling breakout performance in the 2014 Desmond Elliot directed feature, Knocking on Heaven’s Door, the talented actress has gone on to become a critical darling and box office juggernaut with lead roles in EbonyLife’s record-breaking, The Wedding Party 1 & 2, as well as, Niyi Akinmolayan’s critically acclaimed thriller, The Set-Up (read our review, here).
With a slew of movies coming out yearly, Adesua is constantly juggling red carpet premieres and press tours. While she might not be seen as a “fashion girl”, Adesua rarely misses the mark anytime she chooses to make an appearance. The AMVCA winner has been known to show loyalty to brands like Tope FnR, April by Kunbi and most recently, Orange Culture. It is important to note that while Adesua is not a huge risk-taker when it comes to fashion, often sticking to the same silhouette, she is however aware of what works for her and like the famous saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?”
Adesua Etomi in Mai Atafo on her Wedding Day Source: PulseNG.com
What do a majority of Adesua’s iconic looks have in common? If you guessed, Mai Atafo, then 50 points to Gryffindor, because absolutely no lies were told! From her look to the 2017 AMVCA ceremony, that sparked a controversy based on its similarity to Kerry Washington’s Marchesa Emmy dress to the custom piece she wore for her 2017 nuptials to musician and actor, Banky W, Mai Atafo is definitely on Adesua’s speed dial.
Mai Atafo who gained attention for his menswear and bridal work, is one of the biggest names in Nigerian fashion, laying down the blueprint for new-age designers like T.I Nathan and Emmy Kasbit. With a clientele that includes his regular muse, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Adesua’s man, Banky W, Mai is the go-to tux and suit guy. However, he has been known to dress some formidable women in entertainment like Waje, Lala Akindoju, and Omawunmi. Mai’s ability to create pieces efficiently reflect Adesua’s elegance is one reason why they work well as a team. He has consistently guided her looks without changing her style.

With the Vogue cover star set to put out 2 more films before the year runs out, we are sure to witness another classic Mai and Adesua moment and the truth is, we can’t be mad at that!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve looked at the fashion relationship between our favorite stars, and some of the biggest names in Nigerian fashion. From Ini Dinma Okojie’s love for sexy Fablane by Derin pieces, to Rita Dominic’s dedication to Lanre Da Silva Ajayi. So when the time came to pick out another pairing, it was a no brainer for us to go with one of the best dressed men in the industry, and the designer that played a huge role in getting him that title.
Ebuka Obi-Uchendu came into the spotlight over a decade ago, thanks to the first season of Big Brother Nigeria. While he wasn’t the most popular housemate at the time, it was hard to deny the gravitas Ebuka brought to the screen everytime the camera was focused on him. This all paid off with hosting gigs after the house, which eventually led to his own show with Channels TV, and his takeover of the show that brought him to the limelight.
Ebuka at the AMVCAs Image Source: Instagram/@ebuka
Outside being one of the in-demand hosts of the moment, Ebuka is also somewhat of a fashion star and influnecer. In a time when most men where sticking to their comfort zones, he made it his mission to stand out and make a mark on the fashion scene, taking a chance on rule-breaking labels like Orange Culture and Tokyo James. Who can forget how he stole the show at Banky W and Adesua’s wedding in a one of a kind piece by Ugo Monye. Ebuka doesn’t care if its a black tie event, or traditional wedding ceremony, he always dresses to stand out and make a statement.
Ebuka’s love for fashion has probably been influenced by his relationship with ace designer, Mai Atafo. The fashion symbiosis between the two can be seen in their collaborations, with Ebuka often serving as the designer’s constant muse. Mai has been known to dress Ebuka for everything from business events he’s hosting, the AMVCAs, Big Brother Live Shows, and even Ebuka’s wedding. I mean you have to really trust a designer to allow him tke charge on your big day right?
These two have inspired a new wave of Nigerian men who aren’t afraid to take fashion risks from Timini Egbuson to Tobi Bakare. Their decision to take what it means to be a classic man and turn it on its head, has earned them a spot on our list of favorite collaborators on the Nigerian fashion scene.

It’s hard to compile a list of the best-dressed women in Nollywood and not include Rita Dominic. Doing that would be an actual travesty. The Nollywood screen diva, known for her larger than life afro and bad girl roles from the early to late 2000s, has become a fashion icon we all look forward to seeing on the red carpet. When she’s not producing or physically transforming herself for rib-cracking comedies like “The Meeting” and “Surulere”, she’s attending the Chief Daddy premiere in custom Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, looking like a 50s screen goddess.

The fashion relationship between Lanre Da Silva Ajayi and Rita Dominic goes way back! The actress has been spotted in custom pieces that end up inspiring an entire LDA collection way before it even comes out.
Since Lanre Da Silva Ajayi came onto the fashion scene in the late 2000s with Victorian-inspired ruffles, she hasn’t looked back. One of the biggest labels in Nigeria at the moment, Lanre’s pieces have been spotted on everyone from Mo Abudu and Omoyemi Akerele, to Ini Dinma Okojie and Toni Tones. LDA was also one of the only labels Naomi Campbell walked for, at the Arise Fashion Week in 2018.
Rita Dominic at the Chief Daddy premiere in custom Lanre Da Silva Ajayi (Image from Instagram)
Combining Rita’s taste for classic high fashion with Lanre’s modern afro-centric interpretation of old English fashion, was one thing the fashion gods planned perfectly. The designer and actress understand what they’re looking for with every look and yes, they always nail it. From movie premieres to award shows, these two always collaborate on looks that end up on the best-dressed list. It is also beautiful to see that they both have a genuine love for each other, turning up at all times to support the other person’s project.
LDA might have a lot of clients right now, however, Rita Dominic will always remain the OG on that list in our books.
