via The WordPress.com Blog,
At the Official WordPress.com Growth Summit, the two-day virtual conference running twice from August 11-13, you’ll have access to about 50 speakers and presenters across 90+ breakout sessions and keynote conversations. The varied lineup will appeal to new and established bloggers; professionals in tech, media, and marketing; and anyone ready to build or expand their presence on the web.
Event highlights include a talk from Smitten Kitchen creator and cookbook author Deb Perelman; panels with Newspack founder Kinsey Wilson on the state of independent and local journalism amid a struggling media landscape and in the age of COVID-19; and sessions with founders and representatives from companies and organizations like Xbox, Google, Sandwich, African Queer Youth Initiative, Out in Tech, Looka, and more.
Wondering what to expect? Here are 10 entrepreneurs, founders, bloggers, and developers scheduled to speak at the summit.
Jason Snell
Jason is the founder and editor-in-chief of Six Colors, a site that covers Apple, technology, and the intersection of tech and culture. Previously, as the lead editor for Macworld, he covered every major Apple product release for more than a decade.
In a breakout session on content and community with web designer and A List Apart founder Jeffrey Zeldman, they’ll share blogging and podcasting tips, advice on growing your audience, and making money with paywalls, stores, advertising, and more. “Membership programs can build loyalty and provide the most enthusiastic portions of your audience with more of what they love,” says Jason. “I switched to WordPress in order to build a richer — and more marketable — membership program, and the results have been excellent.”
Tina Wells
“The 4Ps of marketing — product, place, promotion, and price — have changed dramatically,” says Tina Wells, the founder of Elevation Tribe, a community and lifestyle publication focused on helping women of color launch, grow, and lead their businesses. In her breakout session, Tina will talk about creating a marketing plan for beginners and small businesses. “We’ll go back to basics and discover how we can make the right changes to help your business not only survive, but thrive.”
A business strategist and passionate entrepreneur, Tina believes in the power of an effective online presence. “Your website is your first storefront, and it tells the story of your brand,” she says, noting that a strong visual identity and fresh design are critical. You can see both in action at Elevation Tribe and on Tina’s website.
Kristin Smith
“My authenticity is what allows me to share my brand with others. Being yourself — and transparent — is what people see and keeps them coming back. There’s only one of you, and that alone is enough,” says Kristin Smith, food blogger at Krisp X Kristin and podcast co-host of At the Bar.
In Kristin’s breakout session, you’ll find out how she turned her passion for cooking into a popular blog and podcast. She’ll share what she’s learned, giving you a set of actionable steps to inspire you to overcome your fears and get started on your website.
“Sometimes in the beginning it’s hard to see a finish line. But, keep your head down and keep working. Throw yourself into it, network with other likeminded people, and continue to learn,” says Kristin. “It all will pay off in the end.”
Paul Bakaus
“The web used to be the best platform for content creation, distribution, and consumption,” says Paul Bakaus, a senior staff development advocate at Google. “But today the walled garden — closed social apps and platforms — are drinking our milkshake. I say it’s time we stop letting them! We need to, as a community, work on making the web more visual, frictionless, and bite-sized. Web Stories are our approach to help with that, and we can’t wait for you to join us.”
In his breakout session, Telling Web Stories with WordPress, Paul will introduce you to Web Stories — a mobile-first tool that allows storytellers to create visual narratives with engaging animations and tappable interactions — and show how you can use them on your website with the Web Stories for WordPress plugin.
Anton Diaz
“We want to contribute to an awesome post-COVID-19 world,” says Anton Diaz, traveler, founder, and creator of Our Awesome Planet. “We’re helping food businesses to connect with foodies and travel destinations to engage with travelers.”
In his breakout session, Anton will share the principles that have guided his food and travel blog for 15 years. “There are core beliefs that have helped Our Awesome Planet stand out,” says Paul. “We make sure that all the food and travel experiences we feature are based on first-hand experience, grounded on our original vision: documenting the food and travel adventures of our family as our four sons — Aidan, Joshua, Raphael, and Yugi — have grown.”
Deb Perelman
Deb Perelman, the longtime food blogger at Smitten Kitchen, is a WordPress.com community favorite. What started as a food blog and side project in her tiny New York City kitchen has grown into one of the most popular food blogs on the internet, as well as a series of best-selling cookbooks.
“I just really, really enjoy blogging,” Deb said in an interview with WordPress.com several years ago. “I love having a place where I can share what I’m working on in an immediate way and have a conversation with people who are equally excited about it, and who encourage me to try more stuff that scares me in the kitchen.” At the conference, Deb will share her story and the journey of Smitten Kitchen, from start to present.
Kim Newton
Kim Newton, a global marketing executive with over 20 years of experience working with corporations and brands, is the creator of The Intentional Pause, a project that empowers women to follow their dreams using the power of pause. “I give every woman permission — yes permission — to just stop and think,” she writes on her website. “I want to help women to embrace pausing as a powerful way forward, with intention, to achieve their dreams.”
Kim has had many successes in consumer marketing, corporate strategy, and business development, and will share her insights on marketing and PR at the summit.
Chris Coyier
Chris Coyier, the co-founder of CodePen, is a front-end developer and designer. He’s also the creator of CSS-Tricks, a resource that’s all about building websites, mostly from a front-end perspective, and was built on WordPress since day one. “I’m a solo developer for the most part on CSS-Tricks. Just me over here. I don’t have the budget for a fancy development team. But I still want to feel powerful and productive. That’s one of the things that WordPress has given to me. I feel like I can build just about anything on WordPress, and do it in a way that doesn’t feel like a mountain of technical debt that I would struggle to maintain.”
In his breakout session — Putting WordPress to Work — Chris will take us behind the scenes at CSS-Tricks, sharing “just how powerful WordPress can be as a platform to run a publishing business on.”
Amy Chan
For Amy Chan, blogging provided the path to a publishing career. Amy is the founder of Renew Breakup Bootcamp, the world’s first breakup bootcamp, and the author of Breakup Bootcamp: The Science of Rewiring Your Heart. “Heartbreak is something that affects everyone, so people were able to connect quickly with the company’s offering,” says Amy.
In Amy’s breakout session — How I Accidentally Became a Thought Leader By Blogging — she shares her own story, and how you can transform your side gig into something bigger. To start, Amy says to just do it: “Stop hiding. Stop waiting. Stop perfecting. Perfection is procrastination in disguise,” she says. “Start the blog, launch the event, put your creation out in the world. Whatever it is, just get in a mindset of taking action. Create as a way of being. Launch it now and develop it later.”
Danica Kombol
Danica Kombol founded Everywhere Agency to help brands tell better stories through social media and influencer marketing. As CEO, she leads a team that works with brands to launch content-driven campaigns and to create meaningful conversations with followers in powerful, measurable ways.
Danica also launched Everywhere Society, a network of about 5,000 established influencers and bloggers, which powers the agency’s influencer campaigns and brand ambassadorships. Her session will cover blogging for purpose and profit.

HAPPY NATIONAL WINE DAY – HERE'S A WHISKEY DRINK: It was already sour week for me, and I wanted to make sure to cover the New York Sour with it's beautiful red wine float atop a pillow of whiskey sour lusciousness. 🍷 It's pretty much the only way I drink wine these days. 🍷 The full article which includes the history of the New York Sour is on my website – link in bio – but I'll tell you that I didn't find a clear consensus on wines to use to float on a whiskey sour.  🍷 When experimenting and taste testing (creating cocktails is hard work) it seemed that choosing a wine that went with the ingredients was much like choosing any other cocktail element. In the end I chose a cab/shiraz blend that a friend gave to me. It was fruity, but not overly sour, and definitely dry. It played very well with the oaky notes from the rye I used. 🍷 Remember that the kind of red wine you choose will need to play well with the other ingredients. You may want to focus on fruity wines to pair with the sweet in the whiskey sour, but you might decide to go dry and let the tannins/oaky qualities pair up with the aged whiskey. It’s your choice.   🍷 Full recipe is in the link in bio. New York Sour: -rye (Old Overholt 100) -lemon -simple -bitters (@oldforester hummingbird bitters) -optional (egg white or aquafaba) -red wine . . . . #rye #cocktailcontessa #feedfeed #bourbonwomen #whiskeygirl #whiskeylove #whiskeylife #whiskeycocktail #whiskeysour #newyorksour #fryeday #bestcocktails #nationalwineday #cocktailsforyou #cocktailsathome #imbibegram #mixeddrinks #cocktailculture #cocktailsofinstagram #homebartender

17 Whiskey Experts You Should Be Following on Social Media
Tumblr media
American whiskey is a tricky business. Staying in the know about bourbon, blends, and the wild West of American single malt is a challenge in normal times, and more so while we’re largely left to explore and share experiences inside. In these times, the best way to stay up to date with the latest whiskey releases and cultural tips is online.
Of course, following the right whiskey experts is key. That’s why VinePair consulted our whiskey-loving friends and experts throughout the spirits community to tell us who they’re following on Instagram and Twitter right now. From whiskey writers to bartenders, the individuals below each offer a unique perspective into the world of whiskey.

Наслов: Industry Experts and Pro Bloggers Come Together to Inspire, Teach, and Help You (and Your Site) Succeed, Линк: https://ift.tt/3g8R1Z8 , Садржај:

SEO Negotiation: How to Ace the Business Side of SEO — Best of Whiteboard Friday
Posted by BritneyMuller
SEO has become more important than ever, but it isn't all meta tags and content. A huge part of the success you'll see is tied up in the inevitable business negotiations. In this helpful Whiteboard Friday from August of 2018, our resident expert Britney Muller walks us through a bevy of smart tips and considerations that will strengthen your SEO negotiation skills, whether you're a seasoned pro or a newbie to the practice.

Video Transcription
Hey, Moz fans. Welcome to another edition of Whiteboard Friday. So today we are going over all things SEO negotiation, so starting to get into some of the business side of SEO. As most of you know, negotiation is all about leverage.
Tumblr media
It's what you have to offer and what the other side is looking to gain and leveraging that throughout the process. So something that you can go in and confidently talk about as SEOs is the fact that SEO has around 20X more opportunity than both mobile and desktop PPC combined.
Tumblr media
This is a really, really big deal. It's something that you can showcase. These are the stats to back it up. We will also link to the research to this down below. Good to kind of have that in your back pocket. Aside from this, you will obviously have your audit. So potential client, you're looking to get this deal.
Get the most out of the SEO audit
Tumblr media
☑ Highlight the opportunities, not the screw-ups
You're going to do an audit, and something that I have always suggested is that instead of highlighting the things that the potential client is doing wrong, or screwed up, is to really highlight those opportunities. Start to get them excited about what it is that their site is capable of and that you could help them with. I think that sheds a really positive light and moves you in the right direction.
☑ Explain their competitive advantage
I think this is really interesting in many spaces where you can sort of say, "Okay, your competitors are here, and you're currently here and this is why,"and to show them proof. That makes them feel as though you have a strong understanding of the landscape and can sort of help them get there.
☑ Emphasize quick wins
I almost didn't put this in here because I think quick wins is sort of a sketchy term. Essentially, you really do want to showcase what it is you can do quickly, but you want to...
☑ Under-promise, over-deliver
You don't want to lose trust or credibility with a potential client by overpromising something that you can't deliver. Get off to the right start. Under-promise, over-deliver.
Smart negotiation tactics
Tumblr media
☑ Do your research
Know everything you can about this clientPerhaps what deals they've done in the past, what agencies they've worked with. You can get all sorts of knowledge about that before going into negotiation that will really help you.
☑ Prioritize your terms
So all too often, people go into a negotiation thinking me, me, me, me, when really you also need to be thinking about, "Well, what am I willing to lose? What can I give up to reach a point that we can both agree on?" Really important to think about as you go in.
☑ Flinch!
This is a very old, funny negotiation tactic where when the other side counters, you flinch. You do this like flinch, and you go, "Oh, is that the best you can do?" It's super silly. It might be used against you, in which case you can just say, "Nice flinch." But it does tend to help you get better deals.
So take that with a grain of salt. But I look forward to your feedback down below. It's so funny.
☑ Use the words "fair" and "comfortable"
The words "fair" and "comfortable" do really well in negotiations. These words are inarguable. You can't argue with fair. "I want to do what is comfortable for us both. I want us both to reach terms that are fair."
You want to use these terms to put the other side at ease and to also help bridge that gap where you can come out with a win-win situation.
☑ Never be the key decision maker
I see this all too often when people go off on their own, and instantly on their business cards and in their head and email they're the CEO.
They are this. You don't have to be that, and you sort of lose leverage when you are. When I owned my agency for six years, I enjoyed not being CEO. I liked having a board of directors that I could reach out to during a negotiation and not being the sole decision maker. Even if you feel that you are the sole decision maker, I know that there are people that care about you and that are looking out for your business that you could contact as sort of a business mentor, and you could use that in negotiation. You can use that to help you. Something to think about.
Tips for negotiation newbies
Tumblr media
So for the newbies, a lot of you are probably like, "I can never go on my own. I can never do these things." I'm from northern Minnesota. I have been super awkward about discussing money my whole life for any sort of business deal. If I could do it, I promise any one of you watching this can do it.
☑ Power pose!
I'm not kidding, promise. Some tips that I learned, when I had my agency, was to power pose before negotiations. So there's a great TED talk on this that we can link to down below. I do this before most of my big speaking gigs, thanks to Mike Ramsey who told me to do this at SMX Advanced 3 years ago.
Go ahead and power pose. Feel good. Feel confident. Amp yourself up.
☑ Walk the walk
You've got to when it comes to some of these things and to just feel comfortable in that space.
☑ Good > perfect
Know that good is better than perfect. A lot of us are perfectionists, and we just have to execute good. Trying to be perfect will kill us all.
☑ Screw imposter syndrome
Many of the speakers that I go on different conference circuits with all struggle with this. It's totally normal, but it's good to acknowledge that it's so silly. So to try to take that silly voice out of your head and start to feel good about the things that you are able to offer.
Take inspiration where you can find it
Tumblr media
I highly suggest you check out Brian Tracy's old-school negotiation podcasts. He has some old videos. They're so good. But he talks about leverage all the time and has two really great examples that I love so much. One being jade merchants. So these jade merchants that would take out pieces of jade and they would watch people's reactions piece by piece that they brought out.
So they knew what piece interested this person the most, and that would be the higher price. It was brilliant. Then the time constraints is he has an example of people doing business deals in China. When they landed, the Chinese would greet them and say, "Oh, can I see your return flight ticket? I just want to know when you're leaving."
They would not make a deal until that last second. The more you know about some of these leverage tactics, the more you can be aware of them if they were to be used against you or if you were to leverage something like that. Super interesting stuff.
Take the time to get to know their business
Tumblr media
☑ Tie in ROI
Lastly, just really take the time to get to know someone's business. It just shows that you care, and you're able to prioritize what it is that you can deliver based on where they make the most money off of the products or services that they offer. That helps you tie in the ROI of the things that you can accomplish.
☑ Know the order of products/services that make them the most money
One real quick example was my previous company. We worked with plastic surgeons, and we really worked hard to understand that funnel of how people decide to get any sort of elective procedure. It came down to two things.
It was before and after photos and price. So we knew that we could optimize for those two things and do very well in their space. So showing that you care, going the extra mile, sort of tying all of these things together, I really hope this helps. I look forward to the feedback down below. I know this was a little bit different Whiteboard Friday, but I thought it would be a fun topic to cover.
So thank you so much for joining me on this edition of Whiteboard Friday. I will see you all soon. Bye.

Industry Experts and Pro Bloggers Come Together to Inspire, Teach, and Help You (and Your Site) Succeed

Subsequently, he revealed his low calorie and nutrient rich recipes, which became a resounding success, attracting thousands of people who wanted to be part of this new trend.
"Fitness in a way of life that transforms you inside and out, is a marriage between good nutrition and physical activity," says Sasha Barboza on her YouTube channel.

Fake-news patrolling may be next big Internet boom: Ryan Holmes
Earlier this year, a fake video circulated of Barack Obama calling Donald Trump “a total and complete dipsh*t.” The voice may not be exactly right, but the clip — which took a team of video pros at BuzzFeed 56 hours to create — vividly illustrates the nascent threat of Deepfakes, i.e. digitally altered videos that can pretty much make anyone say anything.
Deepfake technology is already being widely (and controversially) used to insert celebrity faces into pornography. But it’s not hard to see how dangerous it may prove in the political realm. Putting false statements into the mouths of state actors could easily spur an international controversy, a stock market panic or even an outright war. Far from science fiction, the threat is so real that DARPA, the U.S. defence agency responsible for emerging military technology, has already assembled an official media forensics lab to sniff out fakes.
Of course, forged videos aren’t the only threat on the fake news front. The 2016 U.S. presidential election offered a convincing illustration of the power of plain old fake headlines and news stories, spread on social media, to sway the course of world events. Since then, we’ve grown accustomed to second-guessing, and occasionally falling for, dubious stories spread on our feeds. (It doesn’t help that real journalism is now being conflated by some politicians with fake news.) In the end, we’re left deeply uncertain who and what to trust — if anything or anyone at all.
‘Very dangerous’: Donald Trump is accusing Google of rigging search results against him to favour ‘fake news’
Facebook to fact-check Canadian news stories to reduce spread of fake news
'They can't stop it': Inside the thriving business of selling fake YouTube video views
Social media sits at the crux of many of these challenges. It’s the primary place people get their news these days and, sadly, one of the places most vulnerable to manipulation. As someone who has built a career in social media, I find this worrying. I have tremendous faith in the power of social channels to create connection and open up dialogue. Networks like Facebook and Twitter have become part of the plumbing of the Internet and aren’t going away. But the spread of fake content — not just wacky, easily dismissed conspiracy theories but convincing videos that make even experts do a double take — is a real and growing threat.
How do we restore trust and confidence in online content in this climate? To me, the way forward isn’t just an algorithm tweak or a new set of regulations. This challenge is far too complex for that. We’re talking, at root, about faith in what we see and hear online, about trusting the raw data that informs the decisions of individuals, companies and whole countries. The time for a Band-Aid fix has long passed. Instead, we may be talking about the digital era’s next growth industry: content validation.
The burgeoning content validation industry
Interestingly, we’re already seeing a flurry of activity in this arena, as the arms race between fakers and detectives accelerates. The Deepfake phenomenon, in particular, has inspired a growing technological response. The startup Truepic, which has just attracted more than US$10 million in funding from the likes of Reuters, has set its sights on sniffing out such details as eye reflectivity and hair placement, which are nearly impossible to fake across the thousands of frames in a video. Gfycat, the gif-hosting platform, uses AI-powered tools that check for anomalies to identify and pull down offending clips on its site.
On the academic and research front, scientists at Los Alamos are building algorithms that hunt out repeated visual elements, a tell-tale sign of video manipulation, while SUNY Albany researchers have developed a system that monitors video blinking patterns. DARPA and its media forensics team, meanwhile, look for inconsistencies in lighting on AI-generated faces.
Trickier still, however, is flagging fake and biased text-based news stories — the kind of content that’s easy to make and likeliest to find its ways into our social streams. There’s little technical trickery required here, just an old-fashioned ability to tell convincing lies and use language to manipulate readers’ own biases and emotions. Perhaps for that reason, these fake stories seem to avoid machine detection and often require direct human intervention to suss out.
Facebook, for all its technical sophistication, has resorted to partnering with a growing army of human fact checkers to vet content on its platform in the wake of Cambridge Analytica and the 2016 election crises. Posts flagged as false by users (or by machine learning) are forwarded on to one of 25 fact-checking partners in 14 countries, including the likes of the Associated Press, PolitiFact and Snopes. Content deemed false is, in turn, demoted by Facebook, which pushes it lower in the news feed, evidently reducing future views by more than 80 per cent.
This manual, piecemeal approach admittedly leaves a lot to be desired: standards vary by fact-checking organization, and even patently fake stories may go viral before Facebook has a chance to demote them. Not to mention, the sheer scale frustrates human intervention: every 60 seconds on Facebook, 510,000 comments are posted and 136,000 photos are uploaded, according to one estimate. It’s little wonder there aren’t enough fact-checkers to review all false claims.
The future of trust
Is there a better way to address this problem? There has to be. Will it be easy? Nope. And this is where ingenuity and market opportunity need to come together. For instance, can we find a way to leverage domain authority — the search engine ranking scores that serve as a rough proxy for “trustworthiness” — in vetting content shared on social media? (An outlet like The New York Times, for instance, which has a domain authority of 99/100, would be ranked as highly trusted.) This approach is scalable but, admittedly, far from perfect, since domain authority is rooted largely in linkbacks rather than factual correctness.
Or could we take a cue from HTTPS protocol? The trusted lock symbol next to the URL on our browsers offers instant assurance that sites we’re visiting — banks or online stores — are secure and our sensitive data is safe. It’s not hard to imagine how useful this concept would be in the world of content: I’m picturing a nifty little badge on videos, photos and stories that have been verified as true and factually correct, not fakes. The challenge is that HTTPS is merely an assurance of encryption. Vouching for data accuracy is a thornier issue altogether and far more complex from a technical and human standpoint.
What about blockchain? The idea of an immutable ledger stored in the cloud, tracing the origin of all content to its source, definitely sounds appealing. Users could compare versions of videos or images to check for modifications, and watermarks would serve as a badge of quality. (Indeed, this is largely the idea behind the Truepic app.) But here, too, the question is whether this can be applied to text-based content, where the intent to deceive leaves fewer technical traces.
Ultimately, comprehensive content validation is far easier to imagine than to pull off. Once upon a time, we had a pretty great system for this — it was called journalism. For all of their limits and flaws, news outlets aspired to certain standards of accuracy, and professionals dedicated their lives to upholding them. With the advent of the Internet and social media, however, those traditional gatekeepers are long gone. Anyone can create news now. Anyone can spread false information. Anyone can cast aspersions on what we know to be real and true.
But here’s why I’m encouraged. The backbone of the digital economy — which, increasingly, is the only economy — is information exchange. When that information loses its validity, that’s a huge problem… and a huge market opportunity.
