"When a severe water shortage hit the Indian city of Kozhikode in the state of Kerala, a group of engineers turned to science fiction to keep the taps running.
Like everyone else in the city, engineering student Swapnil Shrivastav received a ration of two buckets of water a day collected from India’s arsenal of small water towers.
It was a ‘watershed’ moment for Shrivastav, who according to the BBC had won a student competition four years earlier on the subject of tackling water scarcity, and armed with a hypothetical template from the original Star Wars films, Shrivastav and two partners set to work harvesting water from the humid air.
“One element of inspiration was from Star Wars where there’s an air-to-water device. I thought why don’t we give it a try? It was more of a curiosity project,” he told the BBC.
According to ‘Wookiepedia’ a ‘moisture vaporator’ is a device used on moisture farms to capture water from a dry planet’s atmosphere, like Tatooine, where protagonist Luke Skywalker grew up.
This fictional device functions according to Star Wars lore by coaxing moisture from the air by means of refrigerated condensers, which generate low-energy ionization fields. Captured water is then pumped or gravity-directed into a storage cistern that adjusts its pH levels. Vaporators are capable of collecting 1.5 liters of water per day.
Pictured: Moisture vaporators on the largely abandoned Star Wars film set of Mos Espa, in Tunisia
If science fiction authors could come up with the particulars of such a device, Shrivastav must have felt his had a good chance of succeeding. He and colleagues Govinda Balaji and Venkatesh Raja founded Uravu Labs, a Bangalore-based startup in 2019.
Their initial offering is a machine that converts air to water using a liquid desiccant. Absorbing moisture from the air, sunlight or renewable energy heats the desiccant to around 100°F which releases the captured moisture into a chamber where it’s condensed into drinking water.
The whole process takes 12 hours but can produce a staggering 2,000 liters, or about 500 gallons of drinking-quality water per day. [Note: that IS staggering! That's huge!!] Uravu has since had to adjust course due to the cost of manufacturing and running the machines—it’s just too high for civic use with current materials technology.
“We had to shift to commercial consumption applications as they were ready to pay us and it’s a sustainability driver for them,” Shrivastav explained. This pivot has so far been enough to keep the start-up afloat, and they produce water for 40 different hospitality clients.
Looking ahead, Shrivastav, Raja, and Balaji are planning to investigate whether the desiccant can be made more efficient; can it work at a lower temperature to reduce running costs, or is there another material altogether that might prove more cost-effective?
They’re also looking at running their device attached to data centers in a pilot project that would see them utilize the waste heat coming off the centers to heat the desiccant."

India’s Tech Sector to Create 1.2 Lakh AI Job Vacancies in Two Years
India’s technology sector is set to experience a hiring boom with job vacancies for artificial intelligence (AI) roles projected to reach 1.2 lakh over the next two years. As the demand for AI latest technology increases across industries, companies are rapidly adopting advanced tools to stay competitive. These new roles will span across tech services, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), pure-play AI and analytics firms, startups, and product companies.
Following a slowdown in tech hiring, the focus is shifting toward the development of AI. Market analysts estimate that Indian companies are moving beyond Proof of Concept (PoC) and deploying large-scale AI systems, generating high demand for roles such as AI researchers, product managers, and data application specialists. “We foresee about 120,000 to 150,000 AI-related job vacancies emerging as Indian IT services ramp up AI applications,” noted Gaurav Vasu, CEO of UnearthInsight.
India currently has 4 lakh AI professionals, but the gap between demand and supply is widening, with job requirements expected to reach 6 lakh soon. By 2026, experts predict the number of AI specialists required will hit 1 million, reflecting the deep integration of AI latest technology into industries like healthcare, e-commerce, and manufacturing.
The transition to AI-driven operations is also altering the nature of job vacancies. Unlike traditional software engineering roles, artificial intelligence positions focus on advanced algorithms, automation, and machine learning. Companies are recruiting experts in fields like deep learning, robotics, and natural language processing to meet the growing demand for innovative AI solutions. The development of AI has led to the rise of specialised roles such as Machine Learning Engineers, Data Scientists, and Prompt Engineers.
Krishna Vij, Vice President of TeamLease Digital, remarked that new AI roles are evolving across industries as AI latest technology becomes an essential tool for product development, operations, and consulting. “We expect close to 120,000 new job vacancies in AI across different sectors like finance, healthcare, and autonomous systems,” he said.
AI professionals also enjoy higher compensation compared to their traditional tech counterparts. Around 80% of AI-related job vacancies offer premium salaries, with packages 40%-80% higher due to the limited pool of trained talent. “The low availability of experienced AI professionals ensures that artificial intelligence roles will command attractive pay for the next 2-3 years,” noted Krishna Gautam, Business Head of Xpheno.
Candidates aiming for AI roles need to master key competencies. Proficiency in programming languages like Python, R, Java, or C++ is essential, along with knowledge of AI latest technology such as large language models (LLMs). Expertise in statistics, machine learning algorithms, and cloud computing platforms adds value to applicants. As companies adopt AI latest technology across domains, candidates with critical thinking and AI adaptability will stay ahead so it is important to learn and stay updated with AI informative blogs & news.
Although companies are prioritising experienced professionals for mid-to-senior roles, entry-level job vacancies are also rising, driven by the increased use of AI in enterprises. Bootcamps, certifications, and academic programs are helping freshers gain the skills required for artificial intelligence roles. As AI development progresses, entry-level roles are expected to expand in the near future. AI is reshaping the industries providing automation & the techniques to save time , to increase work efficiency.
India’s tech sector is entering a transformative phase, with a surge in job vacancies linked to AI latest technology adoption. The next two years will witness fierce competition for AI talent, reshaping hiring trends across industries and unlocking new growth opportunities in artificial intelligence. Both startups and established companies are racing to secure talent, fostering a dynamic landscape where artificial intelligence expertise will be help in innovation and growth. AI will help organizations and businesses to actively participate in new trends.

Review - Dan McCrum, Money Men: A Hot Startup, A Billion Dollar Fraud, A Fight for the Truth, 2022

Yeah, I was always going to love this one. I've watched the docu, listened to the interviews, integrated poodle-shaving into my vocabulary when discussing economics. This was more of the same, just with more detail. For anyone who isn't interested in reading a whole book, I do suggest giving the documentary a go. It's a good watch. I made two friends watch it with me and they also enjoyed. (one of them repeatedly tried to get the concept of short selling through my thick skull, as did the doc, but I still don't really understand how it works)
In short, Wirecard was Germany's hottest rising tech giant. It had expanded from its initial business model of processing risky transactions (from porn, gambling, etc) to processing payments for mainstream businesses all over the world, earning a hefty fee from each transaction. The money was rolling in, the share price could only go up, and it was even in talks to merge with Deutsche Bank. And for six years some annoying British journalist kept publishing hit pieces in the Financial Times accusing it of being a bunch of scams, cooking the books, lying about its business model!
Each chapter in this book goes something like this: Dan gets a lead -> a whistle-blower provides incriminating and/or bizarre documents at great personal risk -> Dan does legwork in some part of the world Wirecard allegedly operates -> Dan writes up a story and sends the incriminating facts to the German regulator (BaFin), Ernst & Young (Wirecard's accountants), German prosecutors, literally anyone who could do anything -> all those responsible institutions take a long hard look at the evidence of crime, and decide that Corrupt Foreign Journalists are trying to undermine our Beautiful German Company and sue the FT.
Meanwhile we also get a narrativised account of the goings on at Wirecard during that point in time (obviously using evidence and interviews that came up later after the trials). The book strikes a pretty good balance between revealing the mysteries as Dan discovered them, and providing enough context of what was actually happening so that you can understand the significance. It's a sometimes terrifying window into the lives of extremely rich people.
It also really humanises the whistleblowers, who are the true heroes of the story. In a story that is so often about powerful people circling the wagons, it was nice to get to know the ordinary people with integrity who brought the whole thing down. Special shoutout for the Indian-Singaporean lawyer and his ex-banker Mum, who were the first major ones. (His Mum emailed out the info for him because she got sick of his dithering, lol)
If I have any criticisms, it's that sometimes the structure of the book encourages emotions too akin to those experienced by McCrum over his years of obsession with Wirecard. It becomes a real slog as year after year BaFin does nothing, Ernst & Young give out another rubber stamp apparently based on firm handshakes and vibes, Wirecard's lawyers send threatening letters, and the German prosecutors pursue criminal proceedings against Dan. Like come on. It's darkly funny how much the entire German state fumbled this one.
On the upside, Wirecard's fall is incredibly satisfying. It ultimately took Dan revealing that 1/3 of their business was entirely falsified, for a different accounting firm to be called in to settle the doubts forever. Surprise! Not only was 1.9 billion euros missing, it never existed at all! The book was entirely cooked! This whole saga had an incredible amount of fallout. BaFin cleared house (turns out a bunch of BaFin employees owned Wirecard stock! How was that not disallowed already!?). Ernst & Young is splitting in half and several responsible persons might be criminally liable. Jan Marsalek is hiding out in Russia, unclear whether in an oligarch's house or in several oil barrels.
There's still some mystery around how much the CEO, Markus Braun, actually knew. Bellenhaus, one of the top guys, who flipped to the prosecution during the trial, of 'my grandfather was a Nazi and it's good enough for me' infamy, claims Braun was the architect of the whole scam. Braun maintains his innocence and claims he's a victim of Marsalek's conspiracy. He's either a great actor or an absolute credulous moron. Could go either way.
