hey :) i really liked your post about combustion bender zuko, but I wanted to note one thing.
i'm half desi and a not anymore practicing hindu, a shaivaite. just wanted to note that your third eye kind of has to have three horizontal lines, like combustion man and p'li have in the show. this third eye that's been popularized is a symbol of shiva, one of the main gods of hinduism.
"Tripundra, to those who apply it, is a reminder of the spiritual aims of life, the truth that body and material things shall someday become ash, and that mukti is a worthy goal. Tri means three, pundra means one which is released. There are three horizontal lines of vibhuti (holy ash) on the brow, often with a dot (bindu) as the third eye. Holy ash, remains from yagya or sacrificial fire-wood is a reminder of the temporary nature of the physical body and the importance of spiritual attainment and closeness to Shiva (Atman-Brahman). " - wikipedia.
It's very integral for a lot of practicing hindus to either wear a tilak or a bindi (depending on gender) and it's also very integral to keep the symbolism of that in the same way, like for vaishnavas who's tilak represents the foot of their god showing them respect and blessing them with knowledge.
"The first line is equated to Garhapatya (the sacred fire in a household kitchen), the A syllable of Om, the Rajas guna, the earth, the external Atman, Kriyā – the power of action, the Rigveda, the morning extraction of Soma, and Maheshvara.[6][7] The second streak of ash is a reminder of Dakshinagni (the holy fire lighted in the South for ancestors), the sound U of Om, Sattva guna, the atmosphere, the inner Atman, Iccha – the power of will, the Yajurveda, midday Soma extraction, and Sadasiva.[6][7] The third streak is the Ahavaniya (the fire used for Homa), the M syllable in Om, the Tamas guna, Svarga – heaven, the Paramatman – the highest Atman (Brahman), the power of perception, the Samaveda, Soma extraction at dusk, and Shiva.[6][7] The "Tri" in the word Tripundra signifies the Triguna – Satva, Raja and Tama; Triloka – Bhuhu, Bhuvaha, Suvaha; Tritapa – Bbhoutika, Daivika, Adhyatmika. Tripundra is also called as Bhasma or Vibhuti. Tripundra also signifies Prana or life force and the three responsibilities performed by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva respectively. Thus Tripundra symbolises the Holy Trinity of Hindu Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.[9] Applying Tripundra on the forehead is termed as "Bhasma dharana". The word Bhasma means calcined ash. Those who wear Tripundra on their forehead, often recite the mantras of the Lord while remembering its spiritual meaning and it is not just a sign of culture or identification." - also wikipedia
with such little representation of hindus and indians in popular media, even though I've left the hindu community, i believe it's really important to keep this representation safe.
thank you so much :) hope this helps and i'm really, really sorry if this came off as condescending in any way, shape or form.
Thank you very much for the information. When I was looking into Shiva to draw parallels to Zuko, I saw artwork that depicted Shiva's third eye with different designs, some with or without lines or sometimes only 2. Now with you pointing out the flaw in my concept, you help me realize the significance of the 3 lines and that my sources must've been incorrect in their depictions. Coincidentally, the use of ash ties in well with the element of fire for Zuko.
Now P'Li had a bindi included in her design while Combustion Man did not. Does Zuko require that in his design or is that gender specific like I gathered?
Also, Zuko will get the third eye tattoo after receiving spiritual teachings from Guru Pathik. That way it will still hold spiritual significance.

here's a short thing i wrote in anger about the design of a character from cotc, neha, as i'm going to link it as supplemental to a post about issues with octopath.
this is neha:
The mark on an Indian person's forehead is called a "bindi" (for dot) or a Tilak/Tilaka/Tika. Neha is "a popular Hindi/ Sanskrit Indian feminine given name." So, Neha is Indian.
Why does she have a crystal ball? "using crystal balls was widespread within the Roman Empire" and the first result for "Indian fortune telling" is a practice about parrots (the animal). You don't picture a Roman when you think of a fortune teller though, do you?
Belly dancing is the most prevalent stereotype of a middle eastern woman. It originated in Egypt, Asia Minor (Turkey), and Spain. It is not an Indian dance.
The generalization of belly dancing being applied to any middle eastern dancer (or even just the assumption that middle eastern women wear similar outfits) is the fault of some guy from New York City. Bloom states, "when the public learned that the literal translation was "belly dance", they delightedly concluded that it must be salacious and immoral … I had a gold mine."
It wasn't supposed to be, and was made that way by the appropriation and commodification of it. "A social dance… is performed… by ordinary people (male and female, young and old), in their ordinary clothes. …these events may be gender segregated."
Some professional dancers were educated, high class people who sang for events, or sex workers. Male Egyptian sex workers were discriminated against, and given a nickname that became used as a homophobic slur. (So Harry shouldn't exist as a belly dancer).
Know that there are many posts and articles about orientalism and belly dancing that are way more detailed than this; this piece was an attempt to very simply summarize what makes stereotypical belly dancer characters so inaccurate using Neha as an example.

Lumba Rakhi: A Token of Sisterly Love Beyond Sibling Bonds
Raksha Bandhan is a significant Indian festival that celebrates the beautiful bond between brothers and sisters. While Rakhi tying is a well-known tradition, there's another variation of this festival that is equally heartwarming and meaningful – Lumba Rakhi. This article will delve into the traditions and significance of Lumba Rakhi, and how it is strengthening sibling bonds not only in India but also across the globe.
Lumba Rakhi: A Unique Tradition
Lumba Rakhi, also known as Bhabhi Rakhi, is a special kind of Rakhi that is tied by sisters to their sisters-in-law. This beautiful tradition acknowledges the integral role that sisters-in-law play in the lives of married men. It symbolizes the love, respect, and gratitude that a sister has for her sister-in-law.
The Significance of Lumba Rakhi
Strengthening Family Bonds Lumba Rakhi is not just about the bond between a sister and her brother but also the bond between a sister-in-law and her brother-in-law. It reinforces the sense of family and togetherness, emphasizing the unity of the extended family.
Blessing for a Happy Married Life When a sister ties a Lumba Rakhi to her sister-in-law, it is not only a gesture of love but also a blessing for a happy and harmonious married life. It is a symbol of support and well-wishes for the new addition to the family.
Celebrating Female Relationships Lumba Rakhi extends the Raksha Bandhan celebration to honor the relationships between women in the family. It's a beautiful way to celebrate the strong bonds formed between sisters, sisters-in-law, and female cousins.
Lumba Rakhi Across the World
While Lumba Rakhi is deeply rooted in Indian culture, it has gained popularity and recognition beyond India. Indian families living abroad have embraced this tradition, making it a part of their Raksha Bandhan celebrations. It is a way to maintain their cultural ties and celebrate the unity of the family, even when miles apart.
Celebrating Lumba Rakhi
Selecting the Perfect Lumba Rakhi Lumba Rakhis are often intricately designed and adorned with colorful threads, beads, and tiny embellishments. Sisters take great care in choosing the most beautiful and meaningful Lumba Rakhi to tie to their sisters-in-law.
Traditional Rituals The rituals of Lumba Rakhi are similar to those of traditional Rakhi tying. Sisters perform aarti (a religious ritual) and apply a tilak (a mark) on their sister-in-law's forehead. They then tie the Lumba Rakhi on her wrist, symbolizing their love, protection, and a lifelong bond.
Exchanging Gifts As part of the celebration, gifts are exchanged between sisters and sisters-in-law. These gifts are a token of appreciation and love, strengthening the relationship even further.
Lumba Rakhi is not just a thread of love; it is a thread that weaves together the hearts of sisters and sisters-in-law. This tradition transcends borders and has become an integral part of Raksha Bandhan celebrations for Indian families around the world. It is a beautiful testament to the enduring bonds between women in the family and a reminder of the importance of love, respect, and togetherness in our lives. So, this Raksha Bandhan, consider embracing the tradition of Lumba Rakhi and celebrate the beautiful relationships it represents.
