Been meaning to talk about this for a few days, but holy fuck, what a week for women's sport.
(Before we get started: INR 1 lakh is about £1,000. INR 1 crore is about £100,000)
The Board of Control for Cricket in India have finally got behind the growth in women's cricket and are launching the inaugural Women's Indian Premier League this year and the player's auction was held last Monday.
The 5 franchises were each given a salary cap of about £1.6m to build a squad of 15-18 players by buidding for their services. So £8m to be spread among around 90 players.
Reserve prices began at 10 lakh rupees and were capped at 50 and while some players didn't generate much interest (for example, Royal Challengers Bangalore got a big bargain by securing the Australian bowler, Megan Schutt at her reserve price of 40 lakh, and Alyssa Healy only went for 70 lakh) a few made bank.
Mandhana cost RCB 28% of their cap. No other player in either the men's or women's IPL takes up as much of their team's cap as her. It's also nearly 7 times the value of her central contract with the BCCI to play for India and vastly more than the £30k she gets playing in the gimmicky Hundred tournament in England.
It's a fresh tournament and the teams need stars to act as faces of the franchise. And so, in places they've mirrored the men's game. Mandhana, India's best batter and who wears 18, joined RCB, whose men's team have Virat Kohli, who also wears 18. (They also signed Ellyse Perry for 1.7 crore and the destructive Richa Ghosh for 1.9 crore). Harmanpreet Kaur, India's captain, got 1.8 crore from Mumbai, whose men's team feature Rohit Sharma, who is also India's captain.
These prices are for a tournament that begins on March 4 and ends on March 26. Three weeks. 8 to 10 games. Pro-rata, the top women are getting paid like footballers (and even those whose salaries are counted in lakh are getting healthy paydays).
This tournament will be successful. The BCCI wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't going to be. And it will grow. Lots of talented foreign players fell victim to squad building restrictions and went unsold. The league will expand. Maybe to 6 teams, before eventually ending up with 8.
All that's holding it back is how quickly talented Indian players are identified and their skills develop. The cash the BCCI generate from this will supercharge that search. The top players already have access to top coaches and training facilities, but for some, the 10 or 20 lakh they get from this tournament will help them build a future and lifestyle as professional cricketers and generate opportunities for others, which in turn will allow the BCCI to expand the tournament.
Within 10 years, I'd be surprised if the WIPL isn't the biggest women's sports league on the planet.

[ad_1] UP Warriorz head coach Jon Lewis ahead of WPL 3 (PC: WORDSWORK) UP Warriorz have announced the retention of most of their squad for the third Women’s Premier League (WPL) season in 2025. With 15 of their 18 players from last season retained, the franchise aims to build on its current foundation and strive for new achievements together in the coming years. Alyssa Healy, who led the team in the first two seasons, continues as a key part of the squad, along with Deepti Sharma, last season’s Most Valuable Player. The team’s core includes a strong mix of experienced international players and promising Indian talent, including Tahlia McGrath, Chamari Athapaththu, Sophie Ecclestone, Grace Harris, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Anjali Sarvani, and Shweta Sehrawat. In a recent trade, England batter Danni Wyatt moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore, while Parshavi Chopra, Yashasri S., and Laxmi Yadav are set to re-enter the auction pool. This continuity highlights the Warriorz’s approach to strengthen their team’s cohesion and build on their potential from past seasons, focusing on creating a tight-knit unit to pursue success in WPL 2025. Reflecting on team flexibility, head coach Jon Lewis emphasized the value of versatility, particularly in the fast-paced format of the WPL. “What you will see with the group of young Indian players and core batters we have, is that there will be flexibility. They will have to be flexible when they choose to step into international cricket, and this will be a good grounding for them in teaching them different roles and developing different roles within their game. Their ability can open lots of different avenues for them moving forward. So, I think having flexibility and adaptability as a player to play in multiple different spots is really important.” For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Retention List for UP Warriorz for WPL 2025 Remaining Purse – 3.9 Cr#WPLretention #WPL2025 #UP #TATAWPL pic.twitter.com/L929J2PWoV — RevSportz Global (@RevSportzGlobal) November 7, 2024 Kshemal Waingankar, Chief Operating Officer of Capri Sports, shared optimism about the team’s progress as they gear up for WPL Season 3. “The UP Warriorz have begun the preparations for Season 3 of the WPL, and we believe that continuity is one of the key aspects in terms of doing well in team sport. A Look Back: The Evolution of Women's Cricket in India
Are looking for the rise of Women cricketer for India
Women's cricket in India has seen a remarkable transformation over the years, evolving from its humble beginnings to becoming a celebrated sport with a dedicated following. This journey is marked by the perseverance, talent, and determination of numerous women cricketers who have broken barriers and set new standards. Let's take a detailed look at the evolution of women's cricket in India, highlighting key milestones, influential players, and significant achievements.
Early Days and Beginnings
The roots of women's cricket in India can be traced back to the 1970s, a time when the sport was predominantly male-dominated. The first recorded women's cricket match in India was held in 1973, which laid the foundation for the formation of the Women's Cricket Association of India (WCAI) in 1973. This organization played a crucial role in promoting and organizing women's cricket in its early days.
In 1976, the Indian women's cricket team played its first Test match against the West Indies in Bangalore, marking their entry into the international arena. Despite limited resources and recognition, these pioneering women cricketers showcased their talent and passion, setting the stage for future generations.
Key Milestones and Achievements
1. First World Cup Participation (1978): India participated in its first Women's Cricket World Cup in 1978, held in New Zealand. Although the team did not perform exceptionally well, this participation was a significant step towards gaining international exposure.
2. First Test Series Victory (2006): India registered its first Test series victory against England in 2006, under the captaincy of Mithali Raj. This victory was a testament to the growing strength and skill of the Indian women's cricket team.
3. ICC Women's World Cup Finalists (2005 and 2017): India reached the finals of the ICC Women's World Cup twice, in 2005 and 2017. The 2017 World Cup, held in England, was particularly memorable as India came close to winning the title, losing narrowly to England. The performance of the team in this tournament garnered immense support and brought women's cricket into the limelight in India.
4. T20 World Cup Finalists (2020): In 2020, India reached the finals of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in Australia. Despite losing to Australia in the final, the tournament was a landmark event, drawing record viewership and further boosting the popularity of women's cricket in India.
Influential Players
Mithali Raj: One cannot discuss the evolution of women's cricket in India without mentioning Mithali Raj. With over 20 years of international cricket, Mithali has been a pillar of strength and inspiration. She holds the record for the highest run-scorer in women's international cricket and has been instrumental in many of India's successes.
Jhulan Goswami: Jhulan Goswami, one of the fastest bowlers in women's cricket, has been a key player for India. She holds the record for the most wickets in Women's One Day Internationals (ODIs). Her dedication and performance have inspired many young girls to take up fast bowling.
Harmanpreet Kaur: Harmanpreet's explosive batting and leadership qualities have made her a vital part of the Indian team. Her innings of 171* against Australia in the 2017 World Cup semi-final is considered one of the greatest knocks in women's cricket history.
Growth and Development
The last decade has seen significant growth and development in women's cricket in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took over the administration of women's cricket in 2006, leading to better infrastructure, increased funding, and more professional opportunities for women cricketers.
1. Domestic Leagues: The introduction of domestic leagues like the Women's T20 Challenge has provided a platform for young talent to showcase their skills. These leagues have also attracted international players, raising the standard of the game.
2. Media Coverage and Sponsorship: Enhanced media coverage and sponsorship have played a crucial role in popularizing women's cricket. Matches are now regularly broadcasted, and players receive endorsements and sponsorships, which were rare in the past.
3. Grassroots Development: Grassroots programs and academies have been established to nurture young talent. Initiatives like the Khelo India program aim to identify and support promising cricketers from a young age.
The Road Ahead
The future of women's cricket in India looks promising, with increasing support from fans, media, and the cricketing fraternity. The success of players like Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, and Jemimah Rodrigues indicates a bright future for the sport. Continued investment in infrastructure, training facilities, and grassroots development will be crucial in maintaining and enhancing India's status in international women's cricket.
Conclusion
The evolution of women's cricket in India is a story of resilience, passion, and progress. From its modest beginnings to its current status as a celebrated sport, women's cricket in India has come a long way. As we look forward to more milestones and achievements, the journey of these remarkable women continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations.
By understanding and appreciating this journey, we not only celebrate the achievements of past and present cricketers but also encourage a new generation of women to take up the sport and aspire for greatness.

HISTORY
The brand was founded by Akash Westley in March 2000. Before that, he worked for one of the top luxury brands in Europe after completing his master's in France. When he attended a fashion courtesy in Italy, which is attended by top luxurious brands from all over the world, there were almost all countries taking part with their prestigious brands, but he didn't find India among them, so as an Indian, it touched his heart. So he decided to quit his job and start a premium brand in his own country. After quitting his job, he returned to India in 1997, and after 3 years, with his knowledge and experience, he started Valencia Zephyr, the luxurious brand in south India, at the heart of Kerala, Kochi.
At the time of starting the brand, there were many challenges that he had to overcome because the concept of a luxury brand was not well accepted by Indian people because it was like, 'Why does somebody want to spend that much money on clothing?’ That was the main concern that he faced. In addition to that, there were many demotivations, and people tried to pull him back, but he decided that no matter what, he would start his luxurious brand, so he chose Kerala as his destination because he found that people in Kerala are more fashion-oriented and welcome new innovations.
Five years after starting the brand and going through many struggles and downs, people started to accept the fast-fashion concept. After the 2005 brand started to witness significant growth in its sales, people from all over India came to Kerala to buy the luxurious clothing of Valencia Zephyr. People started to notice the quality of the materials, perfection in the stitching, and uniqueness of the designs that were offered by the brand, and they realized that it was worth spending and that it was complete value for money.
In 2006, Valencia Zephyr opened its second shop in Mumbai.
In 2010, the brand opened branches in Chennai, Bangalore, Goa, Trivandrum, and later the branches of Bangalore and Mumbai, along with Kochi, which was considered the headquarters of the brand in India. After the great success in India, the brand opened its first foreign shop in the heart of Paris, France, which is known as the fashion capital of the world, to acquire more attention from the world, and later established its branches in Milan, London, and Berlin. Apart from Europe, the brand started to expand to parts of North America, including New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and California, as well as in Korea, China, Japan, Asia, Sydney, Melbourne, Australia, and some stores in the Middle East. Starting with one store, the brand now owns more than 5,000 stores all over the world.

Cold Sun by Anita Sivakumaran
Cold Sun
By Anita Sivakumaran
Dialogue Books
Publication Date 12 August 2021.
Cold Sun marks the start of a new crime series featuring DI Vijay Patel by Anita Sivakumaran. Based in the London Metropolitan Police, Patel has previously solved the case of The Dales Ripper during a posting in Yorkshire some three years before the start of this story. Yet there is a feeling that he is treading water in London when his superintendent calls him to his office. Patel is told that he will be sent to Bangalore in India to help the Indian police to solve the murder of the ex-wife of the British foreign minister. While he is told that out of 24 homicide detectives, he is the right man for the job, he is left with the suspicion that he is actually the one with the right skin colour. In fact Patel was born in Leicester to parents who came from Uganda while his grandparents came from Gujarat which located on India’s Arabian Sea western coast. The only time he had previously been to India was to play in a cricket tournament 10 years earlier.
Landing in Bangalore (referred to the novel as Bengaluru), he encounters initial confusion about his identity from the city police chief Rajkumar before resentment that this British detective has been sent. “The Bengaluru police force with its hundred and seventy detectives isn’t enough. It isn’t equipped with such prowess, such brains as you Mr Patel”.
While Rajkumar is hard to please, Patel does manage to develop what appears to be a more satisfactory working relationship with Assistant Commissionaire Chandra Subramanium buy referring to his role as that of a consultant. As Chandra has studied Criminology at Cardiff University she has a better understanding of his Britishness, although reprimands him for not speaking more clearly to her fellow Indians. She is also far too keen to use her ‘lathi’ baton when questioning suspects for his liking, claiming his superior morals make him ‘a white man in dark skin’.
Author Sivakumaran has previously published 3 titles including The Queen which was made into a high profile television series. Born in Madras, now known as Chennai, her descriptions of modern day India really give Cold Sun a strong sense of setting. The below describes Patel’s introduction to the police station:
"They passed police lockups populated by lowlifes and prostitutes. Habitués, he supposed. They huddled or lounged chatting or silent. Many stared at him as he passed. Chemical and metal smells: the ammonia in urine saturating the bricks, the metallic sourness of human sweat on iron bars. The stink of desperation, the musk of apathy. Bare bulbs glinted. Pan juice, the colour of old blood stained the walls.”
It's not a particularly pleasant beginning to the trip for Patel who is also reflecting on his unsatisfactory relationship with his girlfriend back in London. Unlike southern Indians he also struggles with the spicy food. It soon becomes evident that the police are looking for a serial killer who is targeting women of a high social standing in Bengaluru. There is a memorable scene where Patel is rating the women on their attractiveness to consider if this could be a link.
Patel’s presence brings unwanted personal attention to him from the press with news reports that even hark back to his professional cricket playing days. He is not aided by Rajkumar’s insistence on regular press conferences which seem to be geared towards his own self-preservation. When the deaths become more frequent and one has a tenuous link to Patel, could it be that the police chief will use him as a scapegoat for their failure to progress in capturing the killer?
In addition to the investigation, Sivakumaran strongly reveals life in a city on the border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu where the locals speak either the Kannada or Tamil languages. It’s a place where the population as a whole appear more trusting of the British than politicians in New Delhi. A city where first world technology does not always function with a third world infrastructure. Yet one where answering a mobile phone call or message apparently is the most normal or crucial of activities irrespective of what the person is doing at the time. In some aspects it is more progressive, in Chandra's team the male police officers are subordinate to her with no sign of resentment, in contrast to the UK.
At its best Cold Sun immerses the reader into the unfamiliar sights and sounds of Bangalore where Patel has to deal with people from a range of social classes with often unexpected or unpredictable results. The situation almost becomes too much for our main protagonist yet when he starts to believe Chandra is in danger, the novels speeds up to an exciting finale where the identity of the killer.
Cold Sun is an enjoyable novel which I feel realistically and effectively portrays a stranger in a strange land. I did feel that perhaps there were a few unnecessary steps, such as Patel’s trip to Goa which while valid as it did reveal some very outdated British views towards India, did appear slotted in and somewhat interrupted the flow of the story. I’d perhaps have enjoyed a bit more urgency within the storyline at times but that might be due to personal preference. The key attraction to the novel was following a British born detective's participation in solving a crime in India and I would certainly recommend Cold Sun on that basis. I am interested to see where Sivakumaran intends to take Patel’s character in subsequent novels as the challenge will be to maintain such a level of intrigue.
Many thanks to Random Things Tours and Dialogue Books for an advance copy of Cold Sun. Please look out for the other reviews of this book on the blog tour as shown below.
