#India-Singapore defense relations

hello hello! i'm still buzzing from the game <3 assorted (mainly sonny-related) thoughts off the top of my head:
me and everyone i knew understood even a goal against south korea would be considered to be a great result for singapore, given the gulf in quality, investment, structural support etc. practically no-one expected that there would be a 7-0 loss, however...
quite a few spurs shirts everywhere in the local crowd! whenever sonny scored some would take their shirts off and wave it to sonny. they went absolutely mad when he did his iconic celly <3
the lions could've been two goals up in the first 45 minutes if they took their chances. that was the closest they came to a sniff at goal, which wasn't helped when the defense folded and they were meek in regaining possession. there were some great clearances and individual moments of brilliance, but unfortunately they never were at the same level as south korea, who took their chances and were so clinical and daring.
the korean away support was elite! the chants, drums and the energy definitely made them the south korean team's twelfth man.
everyone (both south koreans and plenty of singaporeans) was so excited whenever sonny had the ball or took a corner. my mum and i almost yelled our lungs out when he got his brace! sonny was at his best, getting into so many dangerous positions; beating his man; making those crucial runs and practically storming up the pitch towards goal.
watching sonny play with such ease and skill made me miss angeball so much though. the energy, the pace, the vibes... can't wait for preseason & next season where we can see sonny knock more in for spurs <3
when sonny did his lap of honour around the entire pitch i was cheering so loud i think i was alienating the non-spurs crowd around me đ although this isn't a spurs match, i'm so grateful sonny's our captain. he gives his all towards any game he's in and he's nothing but heart. i just admire him so much <3
my mum and i got what we came for (sonny scoring and seeing a good match) but i couldn't help but reflect on our national team. they definitely put up a good fight, but the discrepancy in the strength of our players vs south korea's shows how long we have to go as a nation to be a force in football.
hope you don't mind me ending the ask on a little bit of a melancholic note (and reading through the word salad that's my ask) but those were some of my thoughts on the match! it was definitely an exciting one and i loved the atmosphere throughout. - đ
hi there friend!!! ah iâm so glad you had a good time! i did not expect it to be a 7-0 either honestly đ but itâs nice to hear that there were lots of spurs shirts in the crowd, itâs so lovely seeing the support for sonny and spurs all over asia. it just speaks testament to sonnyâs legacy that it doesnât really matter where weâre from on the continent, weâre all just proud to see him doing so well and seeing that love being passed over onto spurs as well is wonderful!
no need to apologise for ending the ask on a melancholic note either, iâve been thinking about the same these days. we as a continent have a long way to go when it comes to football and especially investment and grassroots development. i can speak for where iâm from in india and though football is well loved amongst my friends, sports like cricket will always take first place and the lack of investment shown in football by sporting organisations doesnât help. i really hope that one day weâll see more and more asian countries produce talent the likes of sonny and not just stop there but revitalise their local leagues and the structures in place to get people interested in local footy. weâve got a long way to go but asian football is more exciting by the year! đ¤

How I remember MH17
17 July marks the anniversary of the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) in eastern Ukraine in 2014. All 298 on board, mostly Dutch, Malaysians, and Australians were killed. I had just finished up with a short term job interstate and was looking for further employment at the time, and had the time to follow the reporting of the incident online. In 2014, I would not have guessed that the event would shape my view of discourse and disinformation in eastern Europe for years to come. Ukraine was on the other side of the world and I had no real interest or understanding of the invasion by Russia back then, but people from my country were on that plane, so I paid attention. The blame game started in earnest.
âUkraine fired the missile.â
âRussia fired the missileâ
âIt was an accident.â
âThe Ukrainians are looting the crash site.â
âThe Russians are looting the crash site.â
âMalaysian Airlines was at fault and shouldnât have been flying over a warzone.â
âThe pilot was at fault.â
âThe investigation is biased towards Russia/Ukraine/Malaysia/Australia/Netherlands...â
âRussia/Ukraine tampered with evidence...â
It even got ugly in some less reputable ânewsâ sites and far right conspiracy theories spread online, that it was the âmissingâ MH370 that crashed into the sea months earlier, that the US did it because reasons, islamophobia, men in black, hijackers, crisis actors, aliens... As a queer person, I paid attention to the fact that several AIDS researchers were on board, and stigma surrounding AIDS was and is still very rife, which fed into the more extreme discourse. The world wanted answers.
Round and round it went. It did eventually emerge that Russia, or âseparatistsâ - really Russian proxies - fired the missile, from a Buk launcher that was later filmed being carted back to Russia carrying three missiles instead of its usual four. The billboard was used to geolocate the truck and Bukâs to the border.
Pardon my terrible MSPaint edit.
The still image is grabbed from a video that was posted by Ukraineâs Defense ministry, but forms part of a broader investigation by Bellingcat, an independent collective of open source researchers, that is too detailed to write here but tracked the movements of the Buk and the truck carrying it to and from the launch site. (link: https://www.bellingcat.com/tag/mh17/)
There was nothing wrong with the plane, the pilot, or the flight path. Passenger planes from Air France, Air India and Singapore Airlines were transiting nearby.
Now, it was obvious that MH17 wasnât an intentional target. The commanders of the brigade that the Buk belonged to initially posted on social media that they had downed a Ukrainian fighter jet, and then rapidly deleted their celebratory comments when photos of the wreckage appeared online. In my mind, all Russia had to do was acknowledge it was a mistake, or a mistake by âseparatistsâ, court martial the guy who pulled the trigger, apologise and fork out some form of compensation. Install a plaque at the site, send flowers, and the world would have eventually looked away from the not-really-civil-war in faraway eastern Europe and their brush with a southeast Asian airline.
Why the lies? Acknowledging the mistake would have been magnitudes cheaper and simpler than the overall war effort. Why was continuing to perpetuate a firehose of falsehoods more important than the truth and trying to repair relations? I couldnât answer those questions then, but now realise that keeping the information space muddied and flooded with crap is now the norm for disinformation coming out of Russia. Its like they canât help themselves.
Fast forward to today.
The âseparatistâ commanders are still involved in the invasion of Ukraine, now unmasked as regular Russians. No commercial flights operate over the country for now. Disinformation, so heavily weaponised during the long months of pandemic lockdown and the former president of the US, runs rife. I posted my own little memorials to the tragedy on social media, year after year, and got bot farm and troll reactions downvoting or pushing them into invisibility. Iâm not important enough in the big scheme of things to have a flesh and blood russian troll come to debate me, not that I have the time and energy for it. Iâm also not the only person who refuses to forget it, even if the loss pales in significance to the atrocities perpetuated on Ukraine from last year. The lies meant that when the 2022 invasion started along with the inevitable discourse, we also remembered which side was more likely to be lying. The Netherlands and Australia are very supportive of Ukraine, Malaysia is officially neutral (mostly due to convoluted reasoning of America = bad imperialists, America supports Ukraine, so supporting Russia good etc) though many individuals still go against the grain to donate or volunteer. I canât change what others think, but at least I can prevent them from forgetting.

IMAGES: IAF debuts HAL Tejas in exercises with France and Singapore
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/25/2022 - 12:00 in Military, Military Operations
The Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted large-scale exercises with the French Air and Space Force and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) from October to November. The light combat aircraft HAL Tejas made its international debut in a joint exercise.
The exercise between the air forces of France and India called Garuda-VII was held from October 26 to November 12 at Jodhpur Air Force Station. The French Air and Space Force participated with four Rafale fighters, an A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and a contingent of 220 people.
The IAF put on the field Su-30MKI, Rafale, Tejas and Jaguar fighter planes, as well as the LCH (Light Combat Helicopter) Prachand and Mi-17 helicopters. The IAF also deployed refuelling aircraft on flight Il-78, Phalcon AWACS, Netra AEW&C and Garud special forces units.
This was the seventh edition of the bilateral exercise. The first, third and fifth editions were held in India in 2003, 2006 and 2014. The second, fourth and sixth editions were held in France in 2005, 2010 and 2019.
The Air Marshal of the IAF VR Chaudhari and the Chief of Staff of the French Air and Space Force, General StĂŠphane Mille, carried out combined missions on November 8. While ACM Chaudhari flew on an IAF Rafale fighter, Gen. Mille flew on a Su-30MKI fighter also from IAF. Both participated in the exercise as part of a combined training mission.
Speaking to the media, along with General Mille, ACM Chaudhari noted that Garuda offers a unique opportunity for both Air Forces to learn and absorb best practices from each other during operations.
He also highlighted the growing interoperability between the two Air Forces, which has been developing with each successive edition of the exercise since 2003.
Already on November 3, the 11th edition of the annual Joint Military Training between IAF and RSAF began at the Indiana Air Force Station in Kalaikunda.
The two Air Forces resumed this formation after an interval of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The joint training was carried out over a period of six weeks.
The bilateral phase of the exercise was held from November 9 to 18 and saw the two Air Forces engage in advanced air combat simulations.
RSAF participated with more than 10 F-16 aircraft, while IAF put the Su-30MKI, Jaguar, MiG-29 and Tejas aircraft on the field.
The exercise highlighted the strong and lasting relationship between India and Singapore in the field of defense cooperation. It provided the participating contingents with the opportunity to share valuable operational knowledge, experiences and best practices, while strengthening the professional ties between the two Air Forces.

Impact of Changing Regulations on Private Equity Lawyers in India
The private equity (PE) landscape in India has seen remarkable growth over the past decade, transforming the investment climate and becoming a major contributor to the country's economic development. However, this rapid evolution has been accompanied by a slew of changing regulations, requiring private equity lawyers in India to continuously adapt and navigate the complexities of the legal framework governing these investments. The impact of these changing regulations is profound, influencing deal structures, compliance requirements, cross-border transactions, and overall legal strategies.
1. Increased Regulatory Scrutiny
One of the most significant changes impacting private equity lawyers in India is the increased regulatory scrutiny surrounding PE transactions. Regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), have been proactive in creating and enforcing laws to ensure transparency, compliance, and fairness in PE investments. This has led to more stringent reporting and compliance obligations, compelling lawyers to meticulously ensure that their clients adhere to these regulatory mandates.
For instance, SEBI has mandated detailed disclosures for funds, tightened norms for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), and introduced new guidelines for Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs). This increased scrutiny can affect deal timelines, legal costs, and even the feasibility of certain investment structures.
2. Taxation Changes
Taxation has always been a critical consideration for private equity lawyers in India. Recent changes to tax regulations, including amendments to capital gains tax, have significantly impacted how PE deals are structured. The introduction of the General Anti-Avoidance Rule (GAAR) and changes in tax treaties with countries like Mauritius and Singapore have forced lawyers to rethink traditional investment routes and structures.
Private equity lawyers must now carefully evaluate tax implications and identify optimal structures for their clients to maximize returns while minimizing tax liabilities. This often involves complex cross-border taxation considerations and requires staying abreast of frequent changes to tax laws.
3. Cross-Border Transactions and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Regulations
India's FDI policies are evolving to reflect global economic shifts and national security concerns. Recent amendments have targeted specific sectors, such as technology, e-commerce, and defense, introducing restrictions or requiring government approval for foreign investments. Private equity lawyers in India must have a deep understanding of these changing FDI regulations to guide their clients through the approval process and mitigate potential risks associated with cross-border deals.
Moreover, tensions related to geopolitical issues have led to additional scrutiny of foreign investments from certain countries, impacting deal flow and legal complexities for cross-border PE investments. Lawyers must provide strategic advice to ensure compliance while facilitating smooth transactions.
4. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Regulations
As global focus on ESG issues intensifies, Indian regulators are also embracing the importance of sustainable and responsible investing. This trend has introduced new obligations for private equity lawyers in India advising PE firms, who must now consider ESG factors in their investment strategies. Lawyers play a critical role in ensuring that investments comply with ESG criteria and reporting standards, which can impact deal selection, valuation, and post-investment monitoring.
5. Corporate Governance and Compliance Requirements
Indiaâs corporate governance framework has undergone considerable changes in recent years, with increased emphasis on transparency, accountability, and protection of minority shareholder rights. Private equity lawyers in India must ensure that portfolio companies adhere to corporate governance norms, particularly when it comes to board composition, related-party transactions, and disclosure requirements.
In PE transactions, lawyers must also address shareholder agreements, rights of minority investors, and compliance with the Companies Act, 2013. This regulatory environment creates both challenges and opportunities for lawyers advising PE clients, requiring them to adopt a proactive and strategic approach.
6. Impact on Deal Structuring and Execution
Changing regulations can significantly impact the structuring and execution of PE deals. For example, amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) have made distressed asset investments a viable opportunity for PE firms. Private equity lawyers in India play a pivotal role in navigating these complex transactions by advising on legal strategies, bidding processes, and compliance with IBC norms.
Similarly, changes to competition law, particularly those related to merger control thresholds and reporting requirements, can influence PE deals, especially in high-stake mergers and acquisitions.
Conclusion
The dynamic regulatory landscape in India presents both challenges and opportunities for private equity lawyers in India. Staying ahead of regulatory changes, understanding their implications, and providing sound legal advice are crucial for successfully navigating the complex world of private equity. As regulations continue to evolve, private equity lawyers must remain agile and proactive, leveraging their expertise to ensure that their clients can seize opportunities while mitigating legal and regulatory risks. By doing so, they play a critical role in shaping the future of private equity investments in India.

Climate Change and Water
Climate change is triggering dramatic extremes in the global water cycle, which weâre experiencing more and more directly.
Here in the Western United States the issue is too little water, with a historic drought drying up trusted lakes, streams, and wells, and contributing to the intense wildfires that increasingly blanket our region in smoke for some months each year.
The Environmental Defense Fund summarizes scientific studies of how climate change is worsening drought worldwide, citing greater drought severity in the Mediterranean, Western Amazon, South Africa, Russia, India, Australia, and southern Europe. Human-caused climate change triggers droughts in at least three ways: Increasing temperatures cause more evaporation, drying out soils and vegetation; changing circulation patterns alter where storms develop and the path they follow; and increasing temperatures and changing precipitation patterns reduce snowpack volumes and lead to earlier, faster snowmelt, which reduces streamflow and the amount and quality of water available when itâs needed for vegetation, farming, and fishing.
In other regions, the problem is too much water, with heavier and more frequent storms causing flooding that can damage infrastructure and buildings and contaminate fresh water sources.
The UN Environment Programme describes how climate change is making record-breaking floods the new normal. For example, in late 2019 a series of storms in the UK dropped the equivalent of one monthâs worth of rain in 48 hours in some locations. In July 2021, the eight inches of rain that fell in less than 24 hours in western and southern Germany flooded communities and caused more than 200 deaths. And in August 2021, areas in the U.S. state of Tennessee recorded more than 17 inches of rain â one-third of the regionâs typical annual rainfall â in just 24 hours.
While the worldâs governments try to address these issues from a top-down perspective, many communities â especially those living at or below poverty levels â are already suffering the effects of climate change-exacerbated water issues. In response, a number of social enterprises are stepping up to provide localized solutions to specific communitiesâ water-related issues.
At Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, weâre granted a front-row view of people and organizations dedicated to changing the story around climate change and water â from one of water excess or scarcity to one of resilience and hope.
Here are a few of their stories:
ECOSOFTT: Addressing communitiesâ total water management needs
To date, ECOSOFTT has implemented 70 projects in five countries â Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia â with a 100% success rate. Collectively, their solutions treat and recycle 50 million litres of water a day, providing 300,000 people with improved access to water and sanitation systems, including 50,000 in India and Indonesia at the Bottom of the Pyramid.
âThe effects of climate change are manifested through water, such as rising sea levels, prolonged droughts, and floods,â said Stanley Samuel, co-founder of ECOSOFTT along with Marcus Lim. âEffective water management is thus key to mitigate the effects of climate change and achieve greater resiliency.â
Nazava: Water filtration
Nazava is the only company globally providing WHO-certified household water filters targeting low-income rural households living on less than US$7 per day. By charging customers for the water filters â including through partnerships with microcredit organizations that ensure affordability by enabling payment in up to 50 installments â Nazava ensures its own business sustainability. Marketing is done through healthcare workers and midwives, and sales meetings include community training on hygiene, water treatment, and waterborne diseases. âNazava water filters help households become more resilient to climate change by expanding the range of potable water sources, providing alternatives to dried-up sources â even floodwater can be filtered and made safe for drinking â and by eliminating the need to gather wood, coal, or other fuels to boil water,â said Guido van Hofwegen, co-founder and co-director of Nazava, along with Lieselotte Heederik. âWith Nazava, our customers can filter their own tap, well, river, or rainwater â without the need to boil the water.â
Jibu: An entrepreneurial, franchise-based approach to safe drinking water
Currently, Jibu supports more than 2,830 full-time-equivalent jobs through its franchise network, almost half of which are youth. More than half of Jibuâs franchise owners in Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, and Zambia are women. âJibu has the potential to eradicate single-use plastic bottles and to transform the energy efficiency of the water treatment technology landscape,â said Galen Welsch. âJibuâs water purification system is energy efficient and designed to ensure low water waste and cost-effective production, which enables attractive pricing to the subscribers to our solution, who no longer need to rely on home boiling and the associated carbon emissions. Plus, returning and reusing our bottles significantly reduces pollution, and our decentralized production leads to fewer distribution-related emissions.â
Banka BioLoo: Transforming toilets and sanitation in India
To date, Banka BioLoo has installed more than 12,000 environmentally friendly toilet systems across India; sanitized more than 1,000 schools; served millions of rail passengers; and provided thousands of workers with access to sanitation at their workplaces. Their cost-effective, long-lasting, âfit-and-forgetâ bioloos serve marginalized and low-income populations, sold directly to consumers as well as through partnerships with governments, corporations, and philanthropies.
âOur climate-complementing bioloos contribute to climate resilience in a number of ways,â said Sanjay Banka. âThey require no external infrastructure for fecal waste treatment, they use no energy, and they produce reusable water and biogas as byproducts â thus actually generating more water and energy sources than they consume.â
Building on These Social Enterprise Success Stories
These four examples are just a few that I could share. What they have in common are the hallmarks of social entrepreneurship: recognition of a local challenge, creation of an innovative solution to address that challenge, and delivery of a solution that can then be scaled and replicated elsewhere.
The social entrepreneurship approach not only supports economically sustainable businesses, but also benefits the social enterpriseâs customers and the local community on multiple levels: greater climate resilience, better health, personal and household financial gains, and the promise of improved opportunity and dignity.
If youâre interested in learning more about how social enterprises are improving the climate resilience of the worldâs most vulnerable populations, I invite you to visit the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship website. And if youâre an investor looking to have a more meaningful impact in addressing the climate crisis for people living in poverty, please contact me directly.
Together, we must work to rewrite the global story of climate change.
