I posted a note saying how bad I feel for Esteban but how glad I am he's leaving Alpine (meaning to say that I hope he goes to a good team) and a good friend of mine replied with "yeah I don't like him, bad driver, agreed" and I have no idea how to respond to that... I'm a new F1 fan so no stats ready but I DO know he's not a bad driver but all I can talk about is his background growing up but IDK I need help responding pls?
hi!! same sentiment here, hope he has a contract but glad he left that toxic team.
he's not a bad driver, despite what people say. if u check his stats in feeder series like f3 n gp3 he was a consistent driver that was usually in the podium. if you check his early f1 stats, he had good first full year in force india (points in every race except a retirement and a p12) and was usually close to checo in the standings (if he wasn't being disqualified or had retirements) or his other teammates (last year with 6 retirements vs gasly's 2 and like a 4? 6? point difference)
the year with the biggest position difference is 2020, covid year, in which esteban had not raced in an f1 car for a year against dric who had already a year on the team.
most people think he's a bad driver because of the collisions he has been in, specially with his teammates, but only two of them have been fully his fault (a collision with perez and now in monaco with gasly). the problem is the people he gets in collisions with, and the reason why most people are quick to blame him. drivers that, as usual, blame the other before checking the on-board after the race (which is normal behaviour btw and totally expected, it's weirder if a driver doesn't defend themselves) but ocon never really defends himself, and his biggest/most memorable crashes are with drivers like checo, alonso and verstappen that have big diehard fanbases.
it's true that his style is agressive, but he has also proven he is a team player when needed (defended gasly in australia 2023 after the crash, does follow team orders on the radio, not to mention that he has never talked badly about any team nor teammate he has had and is always cheering the team up on the radio [radio this year after alpine sucked, he was the first to open the radio and cheer the team up, while gasly said the car sucked (true)]). people forget that your teammate is your first rival, but ocon doesn't and unless he is told otherwise, he races them as if they were any other driver. and he normally is on par with his teammate, so of course there are going to be fights between them.
most of the time he does deliver with his overtakes and defense. he is good at managing tyres (record for longest stint in c3 tyres in baku, turkey 2021 where he didn't change tyres, alpine relying on him to manage tyres for all their one pit stop strategies all these years) and good at qualifying.
also, he has never been in a good car, either backmarkers (now and his first half year in f1) or midfield cars and yet he has a win, a 2nd place and a 3rd place. he is consistently in the points if the car allows it, has been praised by prost and is a good test driver and at giving feedback.
i hope the reason why he left alpine is because of the disrespect he has been put through and i really hope that he has a contract for next year. i have never seen a driver been more attacked by his own team (rossi, bruno, otmar) than ocon in the recent years.
#azda.asks#in between tests so its not researched extensively sadly#but yeah most of his crashes are either not his fault or not fully his fault like most people assume#f1#esteban ocon

According to a new survey, lawmakers are playing an increasingly important role in holding corporations and governments accountable for failures to tackle the climate crisis.
The research was done by Columbia Law School, and was commissioned by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). It revealed that the number of climate-related court cases has more than doubled since 2017 and is steadily rising around the world.
Their report confirms a trend highlighted in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2023, which claimed that individuals and environmental organizations were, more and more, turning to the law, as it became clear that the pace of transition to net-zero emissions was too slow.
“Climate litigation is increasing and concerns about emissions under-reporting and greenwashing have triggered calls for new regulatory oversight for the transition to net zero,” the Forum report said.
The UNEP report catalogues a number of high-profile court cases which have succeeded in enforcing climate action. In 2017, when climate case numbers were last counted, 884 legal actions had been brought. Today the total stands at 2,180.
The majority of climate cases to this date (1,522) have been brought in the US, followed by Australia, the UK, and the EU. The report notes that the number of legal actions in developing countries is growing, now at 17% of the total.
Climate litigation is also giving a voice to vulnerable groups who are being hard hit by climate change. The report says that, globally, 34 cases have been brought by children and young people, including two by girls aged seven and nine in Pakistan and India.
Here are five of the climate breakthroughs achieved by legal action so far.
1. Torres Strait Islanders Vs Australia
In September 2022, indigenous people living on islands in the Torres Strait between northern Queensland and Papua New Guinea won a landmark ruling that their human rights were being violated by the failure of the Australian government to take effective climate action.
The UN Human Rights Committee ruling established the principle that a country could be in breach of international human rights law over climate inaction. They ruled that Australia's poor climate record was a violation of the islanders’ right to family life and culture.
2. The Paris Agreement is a human rights treaty
In July 2022, Brazil's supreme court ruled that the Paris climate agreement is legally a human rights treaty which, it said, meant that it automatically overruled any domestic laws which conflicted with the country’s climate obligations.
The ruling ordered the government to reopen its national climate mitigation fund, which had been established under the Paris Agreement.
3. Climate inaction is a breach of human rights
Upholding an earlier court ruling that greenhouse emissions must be cut by 25% by 2020, the Netherlands Supreme Court ruled that failure to curb emissions was a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The December 2019 ruling stated that, although it was up to politicians to decide how to make the emission cuts, failure to do so would be a breach of Articles 2 and 8 of the Convention which affirm the right to life and respect for private and family life.
4. Companies are bound by the Paris accord
Corporations, and not just governments, must abide by the emissions reductions agreed in the Paris climate treaty. This principle was established by a 2021 ruling in the Netherlands brought by environmentalists against energy group Royal Dutch Shell.
The court ordered Shell to cut its CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030 bringing them in line with Paris climate targets. The judge was reported as saying there was "worldwide agreement" that a 45% reduction was needed, adding: "This applies to the entire world, so also to Shell”.
5. Courts overturn state climate plans
Up until now, three European governments have been defeated in the courts over their climate plans.
In March 2021, Germany’s highest court struck down a climate law requiring 55% emissions by 2030 cuts, ruling it did not do enough to protect citizens’ rights to life and health. The same year, the French government was ordered to take “immediate and concrete action” to comply with its climate commitments. And in 2022, the UK’s climate strategy was ruled unlawful for failing to spell out how emissions cuts would be made.

9 people to get to know better
Thanks for the tag @kingfisherprince :)
LAST SONG : 'Govyachya kinaryava' which is a Marathi song in the konkani dialect, because I hate it when I've been surrounded by people who don't speak my mother tongue for extended periods of time so I play my Marathi playlist to just hear the language. It soothes me more than you can imagine 😊
FAVOURITE COLOUR : Ultramarine blue or sea green, because they both remind me of the ocean which in turn reminds me of home 💙
CURRENTLY WATCHING: It's a documentary called 'Bandon me tha dum' about the legendary Border - Gavaskar trophy series India vs Australia of 2020/21. My god the way we played cricket with a team at less than half capacity, countless injuries and hostile conditions, it is truly awe inspiring.
SWEET / SAVOURY / SPICY : Spicy all the way! Give me all the spice, I wanna burn my mouth 😁
RELATIONSHIP STATUS : Somehow found a guy? I don't know how it happened myself but we love him
CURRENT OBSESSION : As you can probably tell, it's cricket 😅. It seems to be the only thing I can write about these days
LAST THING YOU SEARCHED : Sertraline, which is an antidepressant drug. And no, I'm not depressed, I'm just a medical student who has to give a Pharmac in less than 10 days (which might actually be the same thing...)
Don't think I can tag 9 people for this, but...
@the-slythering-raven @madhare0512 @sleepstxtic @ronika-writes-stuff @ishuess
And anyone else who is interested! 😊

[ad_1] Mitchell Starc and Yashasvi Jaiswal durimg the 1st test between India and Australia in the Border Gasvaskar trophy 2024-25. Photo: Debasis Sen Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon – clearly one of Australia’s best bowling attacks ever, with an incredible 1,443 wickets between them. And yet, in the last 10 years, they haven’t beaten India in a Test series. Each of them played the 2018-19 and 2020-21 series, and they all played in Perth. Each time, they finished second-best. So, while we accept that Australia beat India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the 50-over World Cup final, it is also true that India have consistently had the better of them in bilateral Test series. Adelaide and the pink-ball Test will perhaps be the last roll of the dice for this Australian bowling line-up. They know the conditions well, and have played much more with the pink ball than India have. They will also remember the 36 all out and try and take inspiration from it. They also know, however, that India have Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, along with Harshit Rana or Akash Deep, and if they don’t bowl and bat well, there could be another disaster on the horizon. Much more than a one-off WTC win, a five-match Test series will always rank higher in the pecking order. In alien conditions, a team have to be at their best over a two-month period to win an away series. That’s what India have been able to do for the last decade. And that’s what will haunt Cummins and co. The pressure, may i say, is squarely on Australia. For More Sports Related Content Click Here Australia vs India, Perth Test (PC: Debasis Sen) Perth, as Gideon Haigh said, was the most alien of conditions for India. Australia had planned it in a manner that they’d go 2-0 up by Brisbane, and India would be demoralised. However, the Perth punch has left them stunned. And Adelaide, as I said, is their only chance. Another loss, and India would know the series is within touching distance. Mentally, the Aussies would be further scarred and a comeback would be near-impossible. In every way, the pink-ball Test is massive for Australia. While India now have room to manoeuvre, Australia have their backs to the wall. They can’t afford another failure, and that’s why it will be all about pressure. Can the bowling unit step up in Adelaide and soak up the pressure? Can they push the Indian batters twice and make sure that their own fragile batting has some cushion? Can they breach the defence of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul? Can Starc come up with something special? India know that two more days of excellent cricket will open the door to a series win. Fissures will appear, and Australia could well disintegrate. And to produce these two days of excellent cricket, they will want to use the Canberra game starting on November 30 really well. Akash Deep or Harshit? Where will Rohit Sharma bat? Plenty of questions will be answered in this game, and it could very well set things up for Adelaide. Australia Looks to Cement Dominance in Women's T20 World Cup
Australia are heavy favorites to win their seventh title at the women's T20 World Cup, which begins on Thursday and marks their first tournament entry since four-time tournament winner Meg Lanning quit. Alyssa Healy, the new captain, will face a test in the UAE, managing a team that has only won the 20-over trophy twice since the competition began in 2009. The 34-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has been a part of Australia's previous six title victories, but she admits she is going into this year's event with "no real expectations".
"It's the best vs the best, and whoever can be the most consistent or win those small moments along the way will win," Healy wrote in a blog for the International Cricket Council's website.
Still, she stated that her team was loaded with fresh talent, identifying up-and-coming all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, 22, and batting sensation Phoebe Litchfield, 21, as players to watch.
Australia faces formidable rivals India and New Zealand. They arrive in the UAE after defeating New Zealand 3-0 in T20 cricket.
Since the 20-over competition's inception last year, India's hopes have been boosted by the Women's Premier League's resounding domestic success.
"When I talk about this team, we have a few individuals who have been playing for a long time and know their roles well," skipper Harmanpreet Kaur stated.
"This is the best team we are bringing for a T20 World Cup with."
India finished second in 2020 and fell in the semifinals in 2018 and 2023.
Sophie Devine of New Zealand will stand down as captain at the end of the competition, having competed in every World Cup and finished second twice.
"The T20 World Cup's become an important vehicle in the rise and growth of the women's game," Devine told the gathering.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan complete the first group, while Bangladesh, England, Scotland, South Africa, and the West Indies form the second.
'Breaking the barriers'
The South Africans, who fell to Australia in last year's final in Cape Town, have a new captain in Laura Wolvaardt, who is eager to improve on their performance.
"Reaching our first-ever World Cup final in 2023 was a significant milestone for us," she wrote on the ICC website.
Surprisingly, the Proteas beat England in the semi-finals.
"It was a significant 'breaking down limitations and breaking the bounds' event for the squad.
"Before that, we'd made the semi-finals on several occasions, so to go that one step further was very important for us as a group.
"Now our goal is to go that one step higher to lift the trophy."
Heather Knight's seasoned England team, which includes Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey, Sophie Ecclestone, and Lauren Bell, will be out for retribution when they face the Proteas on October 7.
Bangladesh faces Scotland at Sharjah in the opening match of the tournament, where the prize money is for the first time equal to the men's edition with a $2.34 million The purse for the winners of the October 20 finals.
That's a 134% rise from the $1 million granted to the Australians when they won the title in South Africa last year.
The ICC stated that the change was aimed to "prioritize the women's game and accelerate its growth."
Bangladesh was slated to host the tournament but it was shifted to Dubai and Sharjah after weeks of political unrest in July and August ousted the government of autocratic ex-premier Sheikh Hasina.

Record-breaking ticket sales for the India vs. Australia Boxing Day Test
According to Cricket Australia ticket sales for Australia's Test match against India on Boxing Day this year in Melbourne have exceeded all previous records.
According to the host association, sales on the first day of business have tripled compared to 2018–19. The game was played in front of only 30,000 viewers at the 100,000-plus capacity stadium during the 2020/21 tours owing to COVID-19 restrictions.
CA went on to say that purchases for days 2-4 have increased by an astounding 5.5 times since India's 2018–19 Down Under tour.
Joel Morrison, Executive General Manager, Events & Operations at CA stated "The Border Gavaskar series is a highly anticipated event and current ticket sales show there is enormous interest in the upcoming contest between Australia and India."
"We're asking fans to buy tickets now to ensure they don't miss out on any of the behavior, as tickets are going by fast for all five Tests as excitement for the upcoming summer continues to build" he said.
The percentage of tickets purchased by Indian fans has increased to 3.9 percent from just 0.7 percent in 2018–19, which is another significant figure.
A significant number of out-of-country groups are anticipated to attend Test matches this summer Morrison added. "We continue to see strong sales from Indian fans as well as Australian fans presenting an excellent chance to celebrate the lasting connection between our two countries both on and off the field."
The first game of the five-Test series between Australia and India will take place in Perth on November 22.
The caravan will then shift to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and finally Sydney which will host the traditional New Year’s Test.

Occupancy Sensor Market Segments Analysis and Growth Opportunities
The occupancy sensor market was valued at USD 2.2 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 3.6 billion by 2025; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.3% from 2020 to 2025. Occupancy sensors are widely used in applications such as lighting, HVAC, and security and surveillance systems. They are now being integrated into consumer electronics such as PC.
Occupancy sensors are based on primarily 3 types of technologies—passive infrared, ultrasonic, and dual technology, which is a combination of passive infrared and ultrasonic. There are also other emerging types of occupancy sensors, including Doppler sensor, which is similar to radar sensors, RF sensors, and microwave-based occupancy sensor.
Download PDF Brochure: https://www.marketsandmarkets.com/pdfdownloadNew.asp?id=3859894
Based on Applications, the lighting systems segment to dominate the occupancy sensor market in the year 2020 The occupancy sensor market for lighting control applications is expected to grow at the CAGR of 10.9% from 2020 to 2025. Lighting systems are the most crucial application because it represents a substantial portion of energy expenses in all types of buildings, including commercial and residential. For instance, lighting systems in any commercial building contribute nearly 38 to 40% of the monthly electricity bill. However, approximately 70% of savings can be expected with the installation of occupancy sensors
The APAC region expected to be the second largest market for occupancy sensor in 2025 Increased construction activity in APAC has significantly contributed to the growth of the occupancy sensor market. New opportunities for smart lighting, occupancy sensors, and home automation are expected in APAC on the back of strong activity in the smart home space in China, Japan, South Korea, and India. The occupancy sensor market has huge potential in APAC. Countries with considerable market for occupancy sensor systems are China, Japan, Australia, and South Korea. These systems, which are an integral part of a digitalized household, are expected to find increased acceptance among consumers in this region. Although energy-efficient smart lighting products are considered an expensive option in this region, the higher energy savings vs. traditional lighting systems justify the bargain.
Key Market Players: The occupancy sensor market is highly competitive with a large number of global and regional players. Legrand (France), Johnson Controls (US), Schneider Electric (France), Eaton (Ireland), and Signify N.V (Netherlands) are the major players in the occupancy sensor market. These players have adopted various growth strategies such as contracts, joint ventures, partnerships & agreements, acquisitions, and new product launches to expand their presence in the Occupancy Sensor Market.
Legrand (France): Legrand SA is a global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructures. The company has a strong product portfolio pertaining to the lighting control and management system market. The wide product portfolio enables the company to maintain its leading position in the market. Also, it has robust research and development capabilities that enable product innovation. The strategy of Group’s acquisitions focus on small to mid-size companies that complement its activities and have leading positions or proven technological expertise in promising markets. For instance, in 2018, Legrand acquired Netatmo, a start-up, which manufactures products related to smart home. This acquisition will help Legrand grow in the smart home market, which is becoming popular across the world
Johnson Controls (US): is engaged in providing products, services, and solutions to optimize energy and operational efficiencies of buildings; lead-acid automotive batteries and advanced batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles; and interior systems for automobiles. The company's strategically balanced product offering reduces its business risks and enables the company to tap opportunities in new and existing markets. The growth of the company is mainly driven by its organic growth initiatives, expansions and acquisitions. For instance, in 2017, it announced and launched its Asia Pacific headquarters in Shanghai, China

Pakistan National Cricket Team Vs India National Cricket Team Timeline
India and Pakistan's cricket competition is known for being very intense and is considered one of the fiercest in sports. Not only are these teams' games the most anticipated in cricket, but they are also some of the most-watched sports events in the world. In ICC tournaments, India has a great track record, winning 11 wins in total. These are two Cricket World Cups, two T20 World Cups, and two Champions Trophies, all at the top level. Pakistan has also done well in the ICC tournament, winning five games, one in each group. In the ICC World Cup, India has won 14 games and Pakistan has only won one. There has been a lot of history and political tension between the two countries, starting with the Partition of British India in 1947 and continuing with the ongoing Kashmir dispute and several other wars between India and Pakistan. Even though they both grew up playing cricket in British colonies, these problems have made their competition much worse. In head-to-head contests, Pakistan has always had the advantage in both Test matches and ODIs; India has an incredible record in World Cup events, having won all the matches against Pakistan in this esteemed event. Head-to-Head Match Records Examining the head-to-head records, Pakistan has always held an advantage in one-day internationals as well as test matches. This figure reflects the fierce rivalry and fair playing field these meetings usually bring. In spite of this, India has kept an undefeated run against Pakistan in the ICC World Cup, a height of international cricket, therefore showcasing an interesting feature of their rivalry where pressure and high stakes bring out amazing performances. Also Read - Afghanistan National Cricket Team Vs. India National Cricket Team Timeline T20 International Success India has a clear advantage over Pakistan in the more recent version of Twenty20 International cricket, which was especially clear when the two teams played each other in the Asia Cup. Not only do these games decide who wins the event, but they also show how the teams are doing and what their current plans are. Two teams from different countries were able to show off their skills, speed, and strategic thinking in the fast-paced T20 version of the Asia Cup. Outstanding Performances By Individuals Individual records and performances have also been important parts of this long-running battle. Sachin Tendulkar, a legend in Indian cricket, has scored the most runs and fifties in one-day internationals between India and Australia. Saeed Anwar's amazing 194 runs in a single ODI is still the best score by an individual in a match between these two teams, showing how good the competition is. Also, Shahid Afridi has the record for the most sixes, which shows how good he is at hitting big balls. Wasim Akram, on the other hand, is the best bowler in this series, with the most catches. IND vs AUS: India Wins Seventh One-Day Series Against Australia, Ashwin-Jadeja Shine After Iyer-Gill
With the series victory, India has turned the tables on Australia in this year's one-day series. Earlier this year, Australia had defeated India 2-1 in a three-match one-day series in March. The third and final match of the current series between the two teams will be played in Rajkot on Wednesday, September 27.
India secured a series win against Australia by winning all three one-day matches. In the second match played at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24, India won by 99 runs based on the Duckworth-Lewis method due to rain affecting the match. This marks India's seventh victory in bilateral one-day series against Australia. The last time they had defeated the Kangaroos was in a three-match series at their home ground in 2020, winning 2-1. In addition to the series win, India has avenged their one-day series loss to Australia earlier this year. In March, Australia had beaten India 2-1 in a three-match one-day series. The third and final match of the current series between the two teams will be played in Rajkot on Wednesday, September 27. Australia Restrained at 213 Runs Speaking of the match, Australia won the toss and chose to bowl first. India scored 399 runs for the loss of five wickets in their 50 overs. Due to rain, Australia had a revised target of 317 runs in 33 overs according to the Duckworth-Lewis method. The Kangaroo team was bowled out for 213 runs in 28.2 overs. India's Highest Score Against Australia In this one-day match, India achieved their highest score against Australia. Prior to this, India's highest score against Australia in ODIs was 383 runs, which they achieved in November 2013 in Bangalore. Moreover, this marks India's seventh-highest score in all one-day internationals. India's highest ODI score is 418/5 runs, which they scored against West Indies in December 2011 in Indore. This also happens to be India's second-highest score at the Indore ground. Shubman and Shreyas Shine with the Bat For India, Shubman Gill scored 104 runs off 97 balls, Shreyas Iyer made 105 runs off 90 balls, and captain KL Rahul contributed with 52 runs off 38 balls. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav played a blistering innings towards the end, scoring 72 runs off 37 balls, including six boundaries and six sixes. Ravindra Jadeja managed 13 runs, while he and Yadav shared a 44-run partnership in just 24 balls. India scored 54 runs in the last five overs of their innings. Cameron Green took two wickets for Australia, while Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, and Adam Zampa each claimed one wicket. Ashwin and Jadeja Dominate with the Ball For Australia, Sean Abbott scored 54 runs, and David Warner made 53 runs. Marnus Labuschagne contributed 27 runs, and Josh Hazlewood scored 23 runs. Cameron Green added 19 runs, and Alex Carey made 14 runs. Matthew Short scored nine runs, Josh Inglis made six runs, and Adam Zampa scored five runs before getting out. Captain Steve Smith couldn't open his account. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja delivered a stellar bowling performance for India, each taking three wickets. Krishna, who is known as Shardul Thakur, took two wickets, and Mohammed Shami claimed one. Indore Records Seventh Consecutive Victory India has continued its impressive streak in Indore, where they have now won seven consecutive matches. The last time they played a one-day international here was in 2006, and they have never faced a defeat in seven ODIs at this venue. Additionally, India secured their second victory against Australia at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. In 2017, Team India defeated the Kangaroos by five wickets. Return of Rohit, Kohli, and Hardik For the third match of the series, regular captain Rohit Sharma, star batsman Virat Kohli, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be back in the Indian team. Along with the World Cup squad, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar will also be present. Both Ashwin and Sundar will have another trial before the World Cup. If injured Axar Patel is not fit, either Ashwin or Sundar may be selected for the World Cup." Read the full article

Mohammed Siraj tells a story about when he left KL Rahul annoyed
Mohammed Siraj's hard work has certainly paid dividends, and the Hyderabad pacer, who is called "Miyan bhai’ by his teammates, has evolved into a leading figure in the national team. He made his first international appearance back in the year 2017, and although it took some time for Siraj to rise, his stature as a fast bowler has since elevated, especially after the India cricket team's tour of Australia in the year 2020–21, where he also made his Test debut.
In a freewheeling chat with Gaurav Kapoor in his show "Breakfast With Champions", the fast bowler narrated an incident involving KL Rahul when he was on the receiving end. The incident took place when Siraj was yet to make his IPL debut and was a net bowler. He was bowling to KL Rahul, who used to play for RCB.
Siraj said, "I had performed with the Under-23 team. I had played one match in the Ranji Trophy. I had taken a wicket, but then I was dropped for the next two matches, and I was out of the team.
"Next year it was RCB vs. Sunrisers, and I was a net bowler then. I bowled bouncer after bouncer to KL Rahul, and he got angry. He told me, "Khali bouncer hi aata hain tujhe’. I said, ‘Bhaiya, I know other stuff too.’
Then Bharat Sir became quite impressed and went to VVS Laxman Sir to ask, "Who is this boy?"
He further added, "Next year, Arun sir became the coach of Hyderabad for the Ranji Trophy. The selectors were not selecting me for the Ranji Trophy. So Arun sir said, ‘I want this boy in the team. If you listen, then only I will join the association; otherwise, I will not. So Arun sir came and picked me, and I was the highest wicket-taker that year."

[ad_1] Washington Sundar in third test vs NZ (PC: BCCI/X) Over two Indian Premier Leagues, in 2023 and 2024 respectively, Washington Sundar bagged a mere four wickets in nine matches. It is true that T20 cricket is not exactly a barometer to judge someone’s credentials for the longest format. But there was no doubt that a piece or two of the jigsaws were missing from his bowling. It seemed as if Washington was mostly bowling with a flatter trajectory. Around 5-6 months later, when he was rather surprisingly picked in India’s playing XI, against New Zealand, for the Pune Test, Washington turned out to be the trump-card, bagging a 10-wicket haul for the match. The transformation was quite incredible, and for a moment, one pondered whether the previous version was akin to a long-lost twin brother of the bowler who took a string of wickets versus New Zealand. Just zoom your lens on Washington’s bowling in the just-concluded Test series, and it could be clearly seen that there was more energy in his run-up. The telling difference was the kind of overspin Washington imparted on the ball. Just think of the jaw-dropping delivery to Rachin Ravindra in the second Test. The ball dipped and turned, and there was inward drift. Eventually, Ravindra was beaten on the outside edge, with the stumps getting rattled. Washington’s exploits weren’t just restricted to the Pune Test as he added another five scalps in Mumbai to finish with a rich haul of 16 wickets for the series. Behind the scenes, Washington is said to have worked with S Sriram, who has had coaching stints with Bangladesh and Australia. With an impressive showing against New Zealand, Washington has also put his hat in the ring for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar-Trophy in Australia. The tall off-spinner is again expected to impart overspin and extract bounce from those surfaces in Australia. In the first Test at Perth, he could also come into the equation in the second innings. With the sunshine beating down on the pitch, generally tracks in Perth tend to crack as the game progresses, which should assist Washington. Lest we forget that Washington is competent with the bat in hand too. Who can forget the game-breaking stand with Shardul Thakur in the Gabba Test? With R Ashwin and R Jadeja in the mix, India also have a couple of experienced pros to choose from for the opening Test. But Washington might just be the best-suited candidate of the trio to take the number seven slot in the batting order. Just spool back in time, and it can be observed that Washington has grabbed every single opportunity with both hands. In the 2017 IPL, he replaced an injured Ashwin at Rising Pune Supergiant on the back of castling Steve Smith in trials. At the Gabba, in 2020-21, his contributions with both the bat and ball powered an injury-ravaged Indian side to one of their greatest-ever triumphs. A few years later, from nowhere, he established himself as one of the mainstays of India’s bowling line-up versus New Zealand. There is enough evidence to believe that the quiet and unassuming cricketer is all set to shine brightly in the forthcoming Test series in Australia.
