Radha Agrawal makes Gita Garlic acceptable

“For the first 10 years of my entrepreneurial career, my father would tell me: Radha it’s not too late to go to medical school. He always wanted me to opt for something safe like medicine or law,” Indian-origin social entrepreneur Radha Agrawal says over Skype from her office in New York. That’s a sentiment countless Indian parents would identify with. Fortunately, Agrawal, named one of 20 “millennials on a mission” by Forbes last year, did not heed that advice and went on to start a series of ventures, including a nutrition education company, Super Sprowtz, which has caught the attention of First Lady Michelle Obama. Agrawal’s latest is Daybreaker, a by-invitation early morning dance party (that’s right, early morning) where you dance up a storm before heading to work, without the haze of alcohol, and which seems to have caught the fancy of even a blasé city like New York, according to The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other publications.

Already in San Francisco, Daybreaker is now looking to launch in eight more cities across the globe, including Mumbai and Delhi, for which talks are on. “It all started when one of my best friends, Matt Brimer, and I were eating falafel around 4 am after a night of clubbing. We started talking about how there had to be a better way to dance and have a great time without having to get back home kind of drunk, and not feeling very good,” she says. That “way” turned out to be an early morning, alcohol-free dance-a-thon held on a weekday. “The whole idea is that you don’t need alcohol to break down barriers, to dance and to feel comfortable in your own skin,” she says. She speaks from experience: “I ended up meeting my boyfriend at a Daybreaker event! I saw him on the dance floor and neither of us felt shy about talking to each other because we were both dancing.”

For the first party in December, 200 of their close friends turned up — Agrawal says as incredible as it might sound, she has 40 best friends in New York, having lived there for 12 years. This ballooned to 800 guests at one one of their last, held on a triple-decker yacht which went around New York at 6.30 am on a Wednesday.

Agrawal (right) partnered her twin, Miki, to launch a chain of organic, gluten-free pizza restaurants, which gave her the idea to launch Super SprowtzThere are other “take back the morning” parties, such as Morning Gloryville, which originated in London and is set to debut in India on Monday, in Bangalore. But Agrawal prefers to call Daybreaker a “community movement,” because she feels it gives people a place where they feel they belong. Their last party for 500, she says, ended with a 200-person group hug. “I had people coming up to me afterwards bursting into tears and telling me they’ve been looking for this kind of community all their lives. For me, that was very exciting,” says the vivacious 35-year-old. With only her parents, twin sister Miki, also a social entrepreneur, and elder sister Yuri, a brain surgeon, in this part of the world, she says the Daybreaker community also feels like extended family for her. While Daybreaker may not have been started as a business venture, sponsorships and ticketing sales ($25 in New York) have been sufficient to hire a team and even support independent artistes who perform at the events.

What occupies most of Agrawal’s time and “her heart and soul”, though, is Super Sprowtz, which she founded to address the growing threat of childhood obesity in the US, where one in three children is reported to be obese. Through the use of storytelling, multimedia aids and characters with names like Brian Broccoli (there’s even a Gita Garlic, named after Agrawal’s aunt), the idea was to convince children that eating vegetables is “cool”. “We are the Sesame Street or Galli Galli Sim Sim of nutrition education, and we are the only children’s brand looking at the issue in this way,” she says. Launched in 2011, the company’s work came to the attention of the US First Lady, a vocal advocate for healthy eating, who did not hesitate to shake a leg with the vegetable characters for a Super Sprowtz video.

A study conducted by Cornell University researchers covering 10,000 students in schools across New York has found that there was a 250 per cent increase in children eating vegetables when Super Sprowtz characters and branding were involved, she says. “The study will be released in fall this year and it should really help put us on the international map as a programme that works.” Talks are already under way with Dubai, which has the second most overweight population in the world, to expand there and pilots have been conducted.

Agrawal’s latest venture is Daybreaker, a by-invitation early morning alcohol-free dance party before heading to workAgrawal traces the origin of her nutrition education company to her childhood, when she grew up eating sushi and curry in Montreal (her mother is Japanese). “Super Sprowtz is my way of sharing the excitement of new kinds of food and culinary adventure and it’s a company that combines the arts, through storytelling, with business and food,” says the Cornell graduate who majored in communications and even spent a year with an investment bank on Wall Street earning a six-figure salary just so that she could prove to her father that she could do it. “But I was in New York when 9/11 happened and that’s when I realised life is way too short and that we must pursue our passions. And I didn’t want to do investment banking anymore — I f***ing hated it!” She partnered with Miki in launching a chain of organic, gluten-free pizza restaurants in New York and Las Vegas, which was also where she began noticing how children were ignoring vegetables, thus laying the foundation for Super Sprowtz.

The entrepreneur says she maintains close ties with India, visiting once every two years. “I even went to Hindi school in Canada for 10 years and can read and write,” she says, adding for good measure, “Main Hindi thoda thoda bolti hoon (I can speak a bit of Hindi).” More than anything else, it was being the daughter of immigrants that has shaped her. “My father came to the US with $5 in his pocket which he used to buy a jacket from the Salvation Army. And though my mother came from a very wealthy family in Tokyo, she had to renounce all that to marry my father,” she says. “Coming from such disparate backgrounds (her grandparents ran a sari shop in Varanasi), there were a lot of challenges. To be a witness to that but also to have them shield us from so much of their hardship really gives me the motivation to make them proud.”

Her third social enterprise is perhaps the one which would find the most resonance in India. Launched with her twin sister and their friend, Thinx is a leak-proof underwear they have developed for women to wear during their period, instead of a sanitary napkin or tampon. Each Thinx panty that is bought funds seven reusable sanitary napkins for girls in Uganda, for which the sisters have partnered with non-profit AFRIpads. “Millions of girls in developing countries are either missing school or dropping out because of something as simple as their period and that creates a huge imbalance. We’ve already helped around 1,500 girls in Uganda but I’m very motivated to go to India next, and we are already in talks with potential partners,” she says. Thinx, the founders hope, will act as a vehicle to end the silence around menstruation and “break the taboo”, as the company slogan terms it.

With such diverse achievements and ventures (and more in the pipeline though she refuses to go into details) under her belt, did her father finally come around to her career choice? “Yes, when we raised $5 million for Super Sprowtz through private investors. He figured that if people have enough faith in my ideas to invest that kind of money in it, he should too.”

Heart of London Business Alliance today revealed the latest statue to join Leicester Square’s ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie statue trail will be of the king of romance, Shah Rukh Khan, alongside his co-star Kajol, from their film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. This will be the first-ever long-term Bollywood statue erected in the UK. The announcement, thus, marks the 25th anniversary of Indian cinema’s most loved film, DDLJ, and also coincides with the big 50th year celebrations of Yash Raj Films.

  Written and directed by debutant Aditya Chopra, DDLJ shattered all box office records and is one of the biggest all-time blockbusters in the history of Hindi cinema. It also went on to become the longest-running Hindi film of all time! DDLJ is also the winner of a record-breaking (at the time) 10 Filmfare Awards and the film literally changed the face of Bollywood globally.

The film was made at a budget of Rs. 4 crores and the blockbuster, in 1995, collected Rs. 89 crore in India, Rs. 13.50 crore in overseas markets. Thus, total collections stood at Rs. 102.50 crore worldwide in 1995! In today’s inflation-adjusted value, DDLJ’s collection stands at a staggering 455 crore in India and Rs. 69 crore in overseas territories, taking the total worldwide collections to a phenomenal Rs. 524 crore!

DDLJ, often dubbed the Romeo & Juliet of Bollywood cinema, is about two non-resident Indians, Raj and Simran, and their star-crossed love story across Europe and India, beginning on a train from King’s Cross Station. The statue is set to be unveiled in Spring 2021 when organisers hope that its stars Khan and Kajol will be able to travel to unveil the statue in a special celebratory event.

The location couldn’t be more fitting, as Leicester Square featured in DDLJ in a scene when Raj and Simran first cross paths, albeit unbeknown to one another. Fittingly, the scene features two of the square’s cinemas prominently, with Raj seen in front of the Vue cinema, and Simran walking past the Odeon Leicester Square. The new statue will be positioned along the eastern terrace, outside the Odeon cinema, honouring this scene. Other London locations featured in the film include Horseguards Avenue, Hyde Park, Tower Bridge and King’s Cross Station.

The statue will join nine other film icons from the past 100 years, eight of which were unveiled in late February and recently granted longer-term residency by Westminster Council to remain in Leicester Square until at least July 2023. In September a statue of Harry Potter also joined the original line up, while visitors can still encounter Laurel & Hardy, Bugs Bunny, Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Mr. Bean, Paddington, and iconic DC Super-Heroes Batman and Wonder Woman.

We caught up with Prachi Garg & Himadri Garg who runs Ghoomophirosisters Indian travel blog. 1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog? Ghoomophirosisters are the two sisters who have been exploring India from 10 years and above. Besides this, they do organize women solo travel events and motivate women to travel solo and propagate how wonderful it is to travel solo. In their quest to promote Tourism they do organize specific twitter chats and attract several international travelers. They pen down their travel musings at ghoomophiro.com which boasts of being one of the most inspiring travel blogs from India. They have been awarded by MadhyaPradesh Tourism as their best friend on Social Media in travel awards 2016/2018 and by Gujarat Tourism Board for their services and have been featured by CNN global as company for the women, by the women. 2. Describe what inspired you to start your blog? Back in 2007, Whenever we used to be back from our trips, and share our verbal stories to our friends, they get super excited and would want us to share the places to roam around the place etc in emails. It is then we realise why not disseminate the info that we have, experience we have to the larger group  for their benefit and this is how we started our travel blog ghoomophiro.com. Ghoomophiro in Hindi (our native language means – to roam around) 3. How do you motivate yourself to keep the blog up and running? The responses/ queries that we keep getting on our social media channels keep pushing us to evolve as better bloggers. 4. How active are you on a weekly basis? How often do you communicate with your followers? As on today, there are multiple channels to interact with the followers. We try to be in touch with our followers daily via Instagram/twitter posting pictures from our latest/past trips. However, we blog whenever we are back from any trip. 5. What do you think is the best social media strategy for getting more visitors to a blog? Good ContentRegular Engagement with the followersKeep Evolving with the time 6. Would you encourage other people to make their blog? Yes!! One should have a blog. It is the best way you can express yourself to the world with minimum investment. 7. As we don’t see our blog as an easy way to make money online.  For us our blog ghoomophiro.com is an outcome of expressing our travel experiences to the world which can be used by our readers. In fact, in our opinion, if you start blogging with the mindset of making easy money, the quality of content suffers as you might be biased in your writings. 8. What was the most challenging moment in your blogging journey so far? Whenever we travel, we never capture things/places keeping in mind that we have to blog about it and once we are back, it gets really tricky for us to collate the content and present it the way, our followers look forward for. Believe us, this always remain a daunting task for us. 9. What is your greatest achievement outside of blogging? How did you manage to put together this elite group? This is a dream cast, all credit to the director. He had this in his mind for some time. I was not on board initially. But he was sure about Suresh sir (Suresh Gopi) and Shobana. There was also a bit of confusion about the heroine. Wasn't Nazriya cast initially? Yes. There was some clash in dates and so she could not join the team. Then Kalyani came in; I came on board and things got fleshed out a little more. Are Suresh Gopi and Shobana present throughout the movie? (Laughs) Yes, they are! It's not just cameo roles. It's like a multiple narrative. They are coming together after 14 years and some narratives are similar to Manichithrathaazhu. There is lot of curiosity among fans regarding the movie. Expectations are rather high. Yes, but it's all very organic. I don't think it's gimmicky in any way. We have been correct in terms of casting. I am excited about the narratives, they are very interesting. The movie talks about arranged marriage. What is your take on this? I don't think you can put it down to just arranged marriages. I think the trailer did that, giving that sort of impression. Well, my take . (laughs) I don't think there is any right way in meeting the right person. Actually there is no particular way. These things just happen in life. It's great to see 'slice of life' movies which the audience can relate to. Is that a genre you are particularly comfortable with? I think it's important to me that I relate well to the role that I do. That could be the reason I get drawn to 'slice of life' movies. Believable roles. Even the books I read, I need to be able to relate to the book, the characters in the book. Overly commercial roles . well, they are not for me. I cannot do them. I don't think I will be convincing. Yes, I tend (to do) more realistic movies. You are the epitome of fashion, the suave male of Malayalam cinema. How do you maintain your 'style-factor'? That is not a conscious decision. I like clothes, it's something I liked from a very young age. I have an eye for good things. I don't know, style is something unique to people. But it's not just about clothes. It's about how you come across, the sophistication. That's not conscious. I have been noticing people, their styles. This is how I am, you know. You work hard for your movies and it is reflected in your success, not just in Malayalam, but in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films, as well. Has the fact that you are Mammootty's son helped you or hindered you in any way? Maybe in the beginning it has helped me. You know, to get my portfolio right, that sort of thing. Beyond that it all depends on how you do, how hard you work. How you perform and how ardently your fans like you and accept you, that's what counts in the end if you need to survive. Does it irk you if your capabilities are taken for granted? (Laughs). No matter what, I have had to work hard, very hard. Otherwise you cannot stay on in the industry. But initially expectations would have been high... That would not be fair on any person when you are kind of comparing us to their 20 to 30 years of solid experience. You can't compare that to a new comer, it's just not fair. The success of a movie is more daunting when you produce one. Is it in anyway different from just being an actor? It's exciting. Yes, it's different, but thrilling. My initial intent in producing a movie was to be able to create. I needed to make a team of my own to start with. That took some time and I got together a good team. I did not want to make experienced people do all the work. I have ambitions. I want to be a regular content provider. It's about a group of youngsters getting together. It's an opportunity.  So that's bringing young blood into the Malayalam film industry. I love doing that. I think it's about providing opportunity. And in turn, I get great opportunities. But then again, let me tell you, it's not charity. It's something we should be doing for the industry. And, in return, I get to do what I love doing.  Has your degree in Business Management helped you when it came to production? I don't know. I am waiting for the results. I have done two movies earlier. But they were different. Each movie is a learning experience.  What excites you about acting? It's exciting to be a part of any project in any capacity, and the more roles you take up the more exciting it is. If you are an actor there are specific times to come in, and specific roles to do. But as a producer, you are involved full time. You play various roles. I just enjoy that. Are you looking at direction also? No. I don't want to take too much time out of my acting career. I enjoy acting.  Malayalam cinema is back on track with new-age movies telling real stories. Budgets do not seem to matter now. What is your take on big-budget movies in the present scenario? I think there is space for that also. People have the appetite for all kinds of movies. If you feed them with just one type of movie, like what you call new age movies, it may not go down well, may not always entertain them or get them excited. You have to constantly give them different genres. I don't believe the time has come for just real-life movies. There is space for all types of movies. I truly believe that. When the old school comes back, there is still a lot of excitement.  But don't you think young actors are getting more opportunities now? Yes, definitely. But then age does not matter in the Malayalam film industry. Everybody has work now. There are a lot of good movies; lot of scripting is happening. It's a great time now. It's not like there is a particular type of appeal, everybody is trying different types of cinema, different stories, different roles. There is so much happening.  Is this phenomenon only in Malayalam movies? Yes. We are coming out with good movies. It encourages artists when the content is good. A movie like Anjaam Pathiraa is essentially a thriller. The fact that there are numbers for such movies is very encouraging. And people are viewing it repeatedly though they know the thread, even though they know the mystery. The suspense is known, there is no shock value, but still people are watching it because it's a well made film. That predominantly has to do with Malayalam movies and its audience. You won't find it anywhere else. Be it Driving Licence, Anjaam Pathiraa, Kumblangi Nights, all these have numbers. That's Malayalam cinema for you. What is the major difference when you act in a Malayalam movie and a Hindi movie? Well, it really depends on the type of movie you are doing, the team you are working with. It's difficult to generalise the entire industry. I have been lucky to work with good teams trying to put out good work. Do you discuss your movies with your father? We both hear from directors all the time. Sometimes when I lock something or I kind of like an idea, yes, I discuss with him.  Would you take up only path-breaking cinema or would he encourage you to mix them with commercial cinema like he does?
