The man and woman here are married. They live in the house of the boy's parents. The women do housework while men relax.

The women cook a fresh 3 meals every day, do sweeping and mopping, wash the clothes by hand, prayers and so on.

The mother in law of the girl eventually has to leave the house to go to her daughter's house (It's a tradition in many parts of India for a pregnant woman to be cared for by her maternal family).

The girl is suddenly pressured with a lot of housework and misogyny. Eventually she gets her period and is treated very badly by her husband and father in law because of it.

During the beginning of the movie, there's a leaky pipe in the kitchen. The husband refuses to call a plumber or fix it or do anything to fix it. The girl has to put rags to soak up the water and a small jar under the pipe-hole to collect the water and throw it away routinely.

At the end of the movie, she is asked to make and serve tea to all the men who mistreat her and consider her impure because she is a woman and because she menstruates.

She fills two cups with the dirty water from the pipe-hole and leaves them there. Her husband and father in law arrive to beat her. She throws the whole jar of dirty water on them and locks the door and leaves.

She divorces him, gets a job (which her father in law and husband had refused to allow) and get's her own car and basically becomes independent.

Her ex-husband remarries and mistreats the 2nd wife as well.

Browsing through the official photos of the annual BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan last month yields intriguing surprises. In several of them, Russian President Vladimir Putin holds a mock-up banknote featuring the flags of the five core BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Looking at the pictures, one could be forgiven for assuming that the BRICS had just launched a common currency. This is exactly what Moscow would like the world to think as part of its bid to demonstrate that Russia is far from isolated on the global scene.

To the Kremlin’s chagrin, however, things did not go according to plan in Kazan. No BRICS currency was launched, and the official captions to Putin’s pictures do not even mention the banknote. The Kremlin also failed in its efforts to push for the adoption of BRICS Bridge, a financial mechanism that would help the group’s economies bypass Western channels. Interest from other BRICS members was so lukewarm that the scheme did not even make it into the final summit communiqué. Russia is unlikely to stop pressing, however: Developing non-Western financial mechanisms is an almost existential imperative for Moscow—and it highlights how finance has become a new arena for great-power competition.

In Kazan, the Russian summit hosts had a simple goal: to launch as many financial schemes as possible in order to mitigate the impact of Western sanctions on Moscow. Proposals include BRICS Pay (a scheme that would allow visitors from BRICS countries to make payments in Russia); BRICS Clear (an attempt to circumvent Euroclear, Clearstream, and the other Western firms that provide the global infrastructure for trading securities, such as stocks and bonds); BRICS (Re)Insurance (a bid to mitigate restrictions on the provision of insurance for Russian-owned aircraft and ships); a BRICS ratings agency (an alternative to the Western giants Standard & Poor’s, Fitch, and Moody’s); and the BRICS Cross-Border Payments Initiative (a scheme to facilitate payments between BRICS countries in their own currencies, such as the Russian ruble or the Brazilian real).

All five mechanisms matter, but attendees in Kazan quickly understood that Russia cared even more about a sixth scheme—BRICS Bridge. The project’s goal is both simple and ambitious: getting rid of intermediaries for international transactions made with central bank digital currencies (digital coins issued by central banks and stored on mobile phone wallets). To understand BRICS Bridge, picture a long-haul flight between, say, India and Brazil. Instead of having to go through an airport hub (a correspondent bank that is often located in the United States), these systems allow payments to make a direct trip between Indian and Brazilian banks. The benefits of going direct are obvious: Financial transactions do not need to make a stopover in a correspondent bank likely to be located in the United States or go through Swift, the Western-controlled global payment system between banks.

The symbolic dimension of BRICS Bridge is massive. As Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said in 2023, “Every night, I ask myself why all countries have to base their trade on the dollar. Why can’t we do trade based on our own currencies?” This is not only about countries wondering why they need to settle cross-border trade using the greenback instead of their own currencies. Another aspect of the frustration is linked to the dollar being the currency of choice for issuing sovereign debt, putting developing economies at the mercy of the monetary policy of the U.S. Federal Reserve.

Bypassing Western financial channels also offers a layer of protection against sanctions from G-7 countries and their allies, since in most cases those sanctions only bite if the sanctioned country’s firms use Western currencies or have ties to G-7 economies. This highlights how BRICS Bridge is part of the effort by the West’s adversaries to sanctions-proof their economies by ditching Western currencies (in addition to reverting to old-fashioned barter, Russia now settles around 80 percent of its international trade in non-Western currencies) and building alternatives to Swift (like China’s homemade mechanism, CIPS). Dodging Western financial mechanisms also makes it easier to hide sensitive transactions that could trigger U.S. secondary sanctions, such as Chinese sales of military gear to Russia.

A final advantage of BRICS Bridge has to do with its digital nature. BRICS central banks could easily program a digital mechanism so that it blocks transactions that run counter to their interests or, in extreme scenarios, restricts Western access to their markets. Even short of these scenarios, the digital nature of BRICS Bridge would make it easier for surveillance-heavy dictatorships like Russia or China to track international transactions. By pressing ahead, BRICS economies could also be seeking a first-mover advantage in establishing a digitalized global financial architecture—betting that controlling emerging standards in the sector will enable them to weaponize global finance in the future.

Considering the potential benefits of BRICS Bridge, it may look surprising that Russia’s push for the mechanism’s adoption was met with lukewarm reception in Kazan. Moscow’s initial plans were to trial the scheme in 2025 before fully launching it around 2027. The fact that this timeline now looks unrealistic did not come as an entirely unexpected development for Moscow. A few weeks before the summit, China, India, and South Africa had already skipped a BRICS finance ministers’ meeting that was supposed to talk about the scheme.

The reluctance of other BRICS economies to get on board highlights three reasons why the development of non-Western financial mechanisms is unlikely to prove straightforward.

The first obstacle has to do with BRICS members’ diverging views of the urgency of such plans. At one end of the spectrum, Russia is the most enthusiastic backer of BRICS Bridge; the country has nothing to lose as Western sanctions already restrict its access to Western payments schemes. Other BRICS members are less convinced. China is doing preemptive work to have backup plans in case it were to be cut off from Swift or Western currencies, but it has no interest in ditching the dollar or Western financial channels any time soon. Meanwhile, Brazil’s plans to de-dollarize appear to have more bark than bite. South Africa and India are even less eager to connect to BRICS Bridge; bankers in both countries are uneasy about getting too cozy with non-U.S. financial initiatives for fear of antagonizing their Western partners.

A second factor hindering the development of BRICS Bridge is that the system can work only if all BRICS countries issue their own digital currencies. They are far from that point. Among them, only China has both a pilot digital currency in circulation—the digital renminbi—and the infrastructure in place for cross-border payments—through mBridge, a scheme that appears to have inspired the architecture of BRICS Bridge. (Shortly after the Kazan summit, the Bank of International Settlements, which led the development of mBridge, announced that it was withdrawing from the project after media reports suggested the scheme could help dodge sanctions.) Yet China’s extensive capital controls that restrict cross-border transactions will hamper the global rollout of the digital renminbi, including for use among the BRICS grouping. Without China on board, the mechanism is unlikely to have much global clout.

Basic economic theory highlights a final difficulty. With BRICS countries registering trade imbalances among themselves, it is hard to imagine how, say, Russian oil firms would not end up with huge piles of digital rupees for their sales to India. The issuance of a common BRICS currency would prevent such an issue. However, plans for what has been dubbed the “R5” (a potential joint currency replacing the rand, real, renminbi, ruble, and rupee) or for the “unit” (a potential gold-backed digital currency) can be dismissed as far-fetched for now if BRICS countries cannot even agree on launching BRICS Bridge. This looks a bit like a chicken-or-egg problem: BRICS Bridge is unlikely to launch before the five major BRICS economies have a common digital currency, but launching such a currency is useless if BRICS Bridge is not operational. As long as the BRICS countries do not come to a political agreement on the need for BRICS financial systems, these debates could last for a while.

Should Western policymakers lose sleep over BRICS Bridge? Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has turbocharged the fragmentation of the global trade landscape between geopolitically aligned blocs. It is therefore no surprise that financial systems are becoming increasingly geopolitical, as well. The threat posed by such schemes may be overestimated in the short term, since the dollar and Swift are nowhere near losing their global hegemony. However, we can bet that non-Western financial mechanisms will become more mainstream in the long run, further fueling the fragmentation of the global financial landscape. Perhaps the only certainty is that Russia will continue to pretend that it is successfully leading efforts to launch BRICS financial schemes—even when there are none to write home about for now.

The iconic U.S. Air Force (USAF) U-2 spy plane has many distinct features, such as its deep black paint. But this week, one of the Dragon Lady from Beale Air Base, California, is displaying a silver pattern.

The TU-2S '1078', the "T" meaning coach, is back in the skies after almost three years on the ground, or 1,030 days, undergoing a series of regular repairs and maintenance, according to Beale Air Base.

During its time in the 21-month repair area, the 1078 had its iconic black paint removed, exposing the silver panels of the fuselage.

Although the '1078' is back in the sky, it still needs to undergo a series of airworthiness tests before receiving a new layer of black paint.

Beale Air Base said the training aircraft is halfway through the reintroduction process before coaches and interns can use the spy jet again.

Beale, located in Yuba County, is the only United States Air Force Base operating the U-2 Dragon Lady and hosts the entire stock of U-2S and T-U2S.

On January 11 of this year, another TU-2S Dragon Lady (number 1065) of the U.S. Air Force made its final flight, being deactivated after 41 years of services provided in the training of pilots of the iconic jet.

Tolerance and Capitalism; Slavery and Swindle: the Mixed Legacy of the Dutch in New Amsterdam

Two remarkable letters are on display in the New-York Historical Society’s installation “New York Before New York: The Castello Plan of New Amsterdam.”

One, a 1626 letter to the Dutch West India Company from an official in New Amsterdam, the seat of colonial government in New Netherland, describes the “purchase” of “the island Manhattes from the Indians for the value of 60 guilders” (converted by a 19th-century historian into $24). That letter is the only record of the infamous transaction.

The second letter, written by present-day Lenape chiefs whose ancestors inhabited the region when the Dutch arrived, declares the “purchase” invalid. Indeed, says Russell Shorto, director of the New Amsterdam Project at NYHS and exhibition curator, who reached out to the tribes for this response, the transaction was a swindle: The Lenape would have viewed the transaction not as a sale but as a land-use treaty, amounting to an economic and defensive alliance with the Dutch. The items valued at 60 guilders (kettles, knives, and such) would not have represented payment for land but gifts typically presented upon the sealing of a treaty.

The chiefs’ letter, addressed to “Ancestor,” decries the 400 years of devastation experienced by the Lenape people but proclaims that the surviving families have reconnected with “The Land and Waters of Manahahtáanung.”

The NYHS exhibition, which marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Dutch settlers, brings together rare items that document the ugly legacies of African enslavement and dispossession of Native tribes while also speaking to the valuable contributions of non-Europeans. It also describes two foundational elements of Dutch culture that positively influenced the city we know today.

“The Dutch brought a tolerance that was unusual in Europe at the time—in fact, intolerance was official policy in France, England and Spain,” said Shorto in an interview with the Rag. “You had this mix of people speaking different languages and worshipping different ways. [The Dutch] showed in effect that tolerance of others was a recipe for economic success.”

As inventors of the stock market, they also imported capitalism. “They were a practical, seafaring people, and it was in their interest to have an entrepôt [a global trading post],” said Shorto. “Everyone in New Amsterdam was a trader. They would put money back into particular ventures and voyages.”

Business in the New World centered on the fur trade—particularly the “soft gold” of beaver pelts, which were secured by Native trappers—paving the way for New York to become a commercial hub. But the city would also become a center of the slave trade.

The earliest known map of New Amsterdam, known as the Castello Plan, is a highlight of the exhibition. Drafted by Jacques Cortelyou, the surveyor general for the Dutch territory in the New World, and illustrated by cartographer Johannes Vingbooms, the map offers a bird’s-eye view of the city at its peak, around 1660. It depicts 300-some houses, home to about 1,500 people; extensive gardens; a windmill; a fort; and a church attended by Christians of many denominations, including enslaved Africans—all south of the fence that would become Wall Street. A 3-D rendering of the map allows visitors to tour the city virtually, taking them down a canal and under bridges.

The map is on loan from the Laurentian Library in Florence, Italy. (It was sold in Amsterdam to Cosimo III de’ Medici, an Italian grand duke, and went missing for over 200 years before turning up in 1900 at the Villa di Castello in Florence; hence the name.)

Though it resembles a small frontier village, the city depicted on the map offered great opportunities for wealth-building, especially for white Europeans. A 1655 book encouraging European emigration to New Netherland (the Dutch-claimed territory that included large parts of the northeast and mid-Atlantic) said the Dutch “regard foreigners virtually as native citizens” and that in the capital, New Amsterdam, “anyone who is prepared to adapt can always get off to a good start.”

But not all were welcomed with open arms. On display is a petition to the city from Asser Levy, one of New Amsterdam’s 24 Jewish residents, who sought burgher status. Peter Stuyvesant, director-general of New Netherland from 1647 to 1664, had barred Jews from being burghers (citizens), which meant they couldn’t serve as guards for the city. Adding insult to injury, Stuyvesant then taxed them for not serving. Levy’s initial petitioning to become a burgher was unsuccessful, but Jews eventually won their case.

The exhibition introduces us to Native figures of the time, such as Seweckenamo, a chief of the Esopus people living north of Manhattan, who in 1664 proposed a treaty to Stuyvesant by carrying a branch to New Amsterdam and promising peace as “solid as a stick.”

It also reveals how Dutch leaders in Europe, appalled by a two-year war between the settlers and the Native population, condemned Stuyvesant’s predecessor, Willem Kieft, for “abominations” against the tribes and recalled him. Kieft had ordered soldiers to massacre Indigenous people in their sleep, sparking a war in which over 1,000 Native people and hundreds of colonists were killed.

Most surviving artifacts from New Amsterdam relate to European settlement, but in 1984, a special group of objects – presumably collected by an enslaved African – was unearthed near present-day Pearl Street. This “mpungu” collection, found buried in a basket covered by a Dutch plate, includes shell fragments, shards of pottery, marbles, and a copper thimble. It was a Central African belief that the objects had to be broken and previously used so that a healer could engage with their energies.

Despite centuries of rapid and unceasing changes on Manhattan island, the original street grid of New Amsterdam remains remarkably intact. But the Dutch colony itself came to a quiet end in 1664, when its citizens surrendered control without resistance to the British. Shorto, whose books include Island at the Center of the World, a history of Dutch Manhattan, says he’ll be writing about the British takeover next.

Kuala Lumpur: Estuary of Cloudy Streams

”The world was so recent that many things lacked names, and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point.”

This may be the most fitting description of what I encountered as trying to order the breakfast in the Little India, Kuala Lumpur. Sitting outside the door, a customer was having a balloon-resembled food, something between bread and pancakes. I wanted to order the same thing but didn’t know how to express it, so I simply pointed to the photo on the menu and ordered what looked the most similar to it.

”We don’t have that anymore,” the waiter spoke with a southern accent, ”because…blah blah blah. Would you like something else?” I could understand nothing more than 70% of what he said, and ended up ordering something else that looked somewhat similar. What came was a round and crispy, deep-fried balloon-like pancake, like a inflated Chinese scallion, served with coconut milk and curry. The curry was mild, scattered with powdery-textured potatoes. the ‘pancake’ tasted pretty good with it. I ordered a glass of Lassi, whose sweetness is so strong, that I canconsider it as a standard accompaniment to Indian cuisine for me.

What was the name of that dish again?

I wandered through Little India looking for a place to buy souvenirs. The supermarket shelves were stocked with coffee, jam, oil products, various canned soups, and incense for prayer. There were several buckets filled with a variety of spices in the center of the supermarkets. The bag of branded coffee and the Kaya jam, which my friend highly-recommended, was eventually found at a department store on the upper level of Central station, or in Malay, Stesen Sentral.

After buying a ruby chocolate, which was said cannot be found in Taiwan, at the chocolate exhibition hall, I called a Grab ride to go to a western-style coffee shop in Chinatown on Jalan Petaling. I ordered a ”Summer Time”, a mix of lychee and watermelon juice, and began to write about my experiences in Kuala Lumpur. It suddenly came to my mind: the Indian dish I had for my breakfast, made of curry, coconut milk, and crispy bread.

We still don’t know the name of the dish we had that day.

The streets of Kuala Lumpur have a distinct tropical humidity, yet with a touch of freshness, which perhaps derived from the Muslims’ cleanliness, preventing the unpleasant odor of damp and muddy drains. Kuala Lumpur, Estuary of Cloudy Streams, at the confluence of muddy swirling currents; Muslims established mosques at the convergence of the Gombak River and the Klang River, and later the British built various Mughal-Gothic-styled government buildings in the same area.

As Crows gather along the riverbank and search for twigs to build their nests, a group of hijab-wearing college students happily pose for pictures with the architecture. An afternoon thunderstorm suddenly washes away the restlessness in the hearts of the diverse tourists. They quietly hide themselves under the covered walkways, listening to the recitation of the Quran emanating from the Masjid.

Time seems to been fragmented, yet never ceases to flow.

According to the Malaysian history book, the official version of Malaysia’s founding epic told us Malays came from Sumatra. ”A prince who lost his kingdom take his people to come to this land for rebuilding what they once had,” and they rooted themselves here, never to return to the other side of the straits. In the market, the aroma of coffee were permeating the air, and carried far away by the tropical breeze. A Tamil vendor introduced me to beautiful batik shawls. In my not-so-fluent English, I negotiated the price with him and ended up buying ones I’m pretty sure I would love.

Gentle sunlights spilling onto the shading canvas, notes of diaspora danced, in the fluttering signs of the bazaar, amidst the bustling city traffic, and within the oscillating fans at the train station. Secret-society members drifted here from the Northern Empire, Sri Lankan merchants brought by the monsoon winds, and the eventually settled-down Indonesian royal members, they are all smoothly shaped by the river flow into the time, slowly extending into an unending melody within stories.

In the cafeteria of the old Kuala Lumpur station, Ayam Tandori filled the air with a fragrant aroma. Although the beauty of the old station building couldn’t be captured by a camera, it appeared particularly lovely in the sunset. A photography team was taking pictures of a couple in front of the train station, though I couldn’t quite tell if they were shooting wedding photos or being Cosplayer.

The river, quietly flowed through the city, the Railwat went towards the harbour of Port Klang, and they would never to return. I watched the bustling traffic in front of the station, that forming an ever-turning roundabout, which are so fast, that seems in the next second, they would all dissolve into cream as the way tigers melt away.

Time clearly never ceases to flow, yet it is fragmented in a montage-like manner.

I delved into the crevices of history, let the approaching time drenched my body; Like a camel traversing the endless Silk Road, looking back at the scriptures I once wandered through. Inside the Islamic Arts Museum, I gaze at the coins displayed in glass cabinets, forming a long timeline connecting the end of the Silk Road to another end: the Umayyads, the Abbasids, the Fatimids; the Ayyubids of the Kurds, the Safavids of the Persians, the Mughals of the Mongols… Distant faith and the sound of prayers gradually reach the scattered archipelago of islands.

The guide at Masjid Negara introduces me to the distinctive features of their religious architecture: geometric patterns, designs devoid of images, and Arabic calligraphy that adorns every corner. He mentions that the average Malays do not truly understand Arabic, just like the Chinese, who do not really understand ”Namo Amitābhāya” or ”Om Mani Padme Hum.” However, the devoutness during prayer may overcome the language barrier, allowing the heartfelt yearning for tranquility to be conveyed genuinely to the beloved deity.

The peaceful coolness from the floor of Masjid gently touches my skin through my socks.

Perhaps due to its tropical location, even on weekends, one can feel that the nights and days in Kuala Lumpur are like different worlds. The deserted Independence Square during daytime comes to life at night with several food trucks gathering there. People ride bicycles and blow bubbles in front of the old government building, while the shimmering neon lights make the city’s stories vibrant.

At the night market on Petaling Street, the tables and chairs are already packed tightly by the vendors, making it difficult for the traffic to move. The aroma of delicious jerky fills the air, with each bite, I can feel its fresh, sweet, and crispy taste. I picked a few satay skewers, fried snacks, and even buy a serving of Balinese-style char siu rice. Slowly, I move to Bukit Bintang, the Starhill Avenue, where you can see a group street performers sing loudly in front of the subway station. The audience gathers in a circle on the sidewalk, eager to listen to their voices. Coinciding with the floral procession of Vesak Day, the streets are under traffic control, and Buddhist followers from around the world ride float after float, showering blessings upon those around them.

I step into a karaoke bar. It’s sparsely populated. I order a cola and sit at the counter. A staff member accosts me in a simple conversation in English. She tells me she is a Chinese from Myanmar, with a younger brother studying Mandarin in Taiwan, and a sister already married and has children in Taiwan. She proudly shows me photos of her siblings. The bar owner is Hakka, and I casually recite a few phrases in Hakka that I heard in the Subway announcements from Taiwan: ”Sṳ̀n-mùng-ǹg, án-chṳ́-se.” However, she looks puzzled. I ask her how to say ”thank you” in Malaysian Hakka, and she replies with ”唔該,” with the Hakka pronunciation. Haha, we bridge the language barrier and make ourselves understood. I select a song by Sandy Lam and another one by Jay Chou on the jukebox, At Least I’ve Got You, even if I Find It Hard To Say. A Japanese customer orders a beer, and as it pours into the glass, it turns into Bubble, as G.E.M. sings. The bar owner suddenly suggests that we should go together to taste some street food at Jalan Alor after closing. In the stir-fry restaurant, we order five servings of chicken wings, a large plate of fried noodles, and the Malaysians’ favorite ”lala” (clams). I thought it was a phonetic mistake for ”lâ-á” in Hokkien, but as I eat, the clams in front of me seem to play the ”Lala Land.”

I recall the previous night when I sneaked into a bookstore and browsed through interesting English books, searching for fragments of stories that have died but not yet been buried, as if I were a wandering ghost. That’s it. Knowing that stories don’t end like this, that’s it. Knowing that time doesn’t put a full stop on us, that’s it. Knowing that those timelines hidden in the Islamic Museum, the clocks that calculate prayers in the Masjid Negara, and the novels in my backpack are not the end of history. That’s it, I think.

I love Kuala Lumpur’s converging all of the stories, yet it hasn’t written the final chapter.

On the plane, I turned on my e-book reader and continue reading the unfinished book about Malaysian history: Portuguese captured Malacca, the White Rajahs ”inherited” Sarawak, the British and Dutch partitioned the Malay world, and the colonizers attempted to build a better world, like Raffles and Swettenham. The plane takes off towards the north, and outside the window, the weather is clear, with clouds leaping alongside the aircraft.

Once again, I hear the recitation of the Quran, reminding me of Fajr.

Poland will receive 8 Apache helicopters from U.S. stock before a contract for 96 helicopters

The Polish military will soon begin training on how to operate the AH-64 Apache helicopters, before the delivery of eight aircraft from the U.S. surplus stock.

“The U.S. army will provide Poland with Apache helicopters from its own resources, even before signing the contract for the purchase of 96 helicopters,” said Deputy Prime Minister Mariusz Blaszczak after the meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin, on May 5.

The topics of discussion also included Polish-American military cooperation, the security situation on the eastern flank of NATO and in Europe, the deepening of military interoperability and the US military presence in Poland.
