Hey! I saw that you published some books (looking forward to checking them out, actually), but I was wondering how you did that? I'm not out of high school yet, but I've already finished my first draft of book one of my series, and have been working on editing and fixing up the second draft. I do have an editor, which is nice. I was wondering how you published? Any advice/ info would be greatly appreciated!
Hey, cool! My first book legit came out when I was still in high school.
I'm an indie author, so I'll talk about indie stuff... and traditional... and oh dear that's a lot.
Let's go over some pros and cons and what to expect.
Crow's (oops not) Quick Guide to Publishin'
Self Publishing:
Tumblr media
This is what I did for Good Angel, Bad End, my duology!
Self pubbing:
+Total control of end product +No deadlines +Full control of changing it at any time -You do all the work (or pay) -It costs you money for jobs you can't (or shouldn't) do yourself like editing -Extremely limited reach of audience, very hard to sell
I queried GA/BE around a bit but ultimately decided to self publish it. It's just too niche for mainstream, being a weird genre mix up with way too queer characters. Multiple neopronouns used by funky angels in magic school slice of life that turns apocalyptic? yeah, I felt it'd be best I just put it out.
You'll need to
Edit the text (I'd recc multiple friends, a paid editor)
Proofread the text (I'd recc paying a pro)
Assemble the text files formatting (for digital, print)
Get a cover
Make pages for it on GoodReads etc and promote it
Self-publishing can be a lot of work. I did GA/BE's interiors myself using first Microsoft word, then adobe indesign for the recent revamp. Using Word/other text programs can give you a fully workable interior file, but abusing the free trial system of adobe will allow more advanced inclusions. Getting ebook files to work is a nightmare, and print can also be a pain- it's a lot of following online tutorials and trial and error I found. Calibre then is the program you use to finish digital files for release.
Costs for editing can be very high. Editing is a high skill, high time job- I got my books done on discount from a friend for next to nothing, but expect definitely a few hundred bucks. Research though fair prices. You don't need to hire someone to proofread or edit, but it is a good idea. That or outsource to many friends, ideally ones who give honest feedback. A proofreader is much cheaper as they only look for errors, I again got it cheap for 65£ per book. Art wise, I bought mine on commission- talk to an artist and make it clear it is for a commercial project and that you have the right to sell the end result. My cover for each book was about 100£
You might notice this is adding up to a few hundred quid, and yes: it cost me like, 350£ or so per book to publish, even with myself doing a lot of the work. This is a lot! Does it pay back? Usually no. I have at this point now "made a profit", but it took years. You can't typically go into self publishing looking for profit.
I really enjoy self publishing GA. It meant I could put a project out that I kinda only made for me, and have full rights to do whatever I want with it. I got to design the cover and choose what to do at every step... but it was a crazy amount of intensive work too. Marketing wise I've found is about impossible- your best bet 100% is to send the book to as many people as possible (digitally) for review and just try to get enough people reading it. Then you hope they like it and talk about it. I've found no other method of marketing particularly useful: word of mouth is still king.
Indie Publishing:
Tumblr media
Indie pubbin:
+Don't have to spend any money (get paid) +Professional editing/cover/formatting +Backing of publishing house's marketing team -Deadlines -Less creative control -Contracted -Must query and be accepted
My first book was Angel Radio, which actually I sold when I was 17. came out when I was 18. The timescale for traditional publishing, even indie, is typically at least a year.
There's a lot of indie publishers out there, and we should read them more often. However, being published by an indie publisher (aka, a small, non-mainstream one- unlikely to ever be 'on shelves') takes extra, different work.
Do your research!!! There's a LOT of scam publishers out there. A publisher will never, ever, not even slightly ever, charge you money or pressure you to spend money (like buying your own copies of the book). A great way to check is to just look up 'publisher name + scam'.
Prepare a query letter. This is a pitch for your book, basic book info, and a bit about you. Every publishing house will have a 'submissions' page which explains specific wants (such as several pages of your book or a synopsis), so every application is slightly custom.
Query and wait. It takes many weeks to hear back with queries. Usually you should do them in small batches of like five. It's very rare to get a deal- it may not be your book, it might just be market trends or they already got a book about dragons on order.
DOUBLE CHECK YOUR CONTRACT. Contracts can be hard, so seek help if you want, though I've found my one contract to be not that long and readable. Still, you should always read a contract, especially as a scam publisher might try to trick you there.
Indie publishing is good because... it's more accessible and diverse than mainstream, but still offers the same benefits to authors. Just on a way smaller scale. I don't think my publisher, Harmony Ink Press, did much jack or shit for me marketing wise, and that's pretty typical. Marketing is very hit or miss and very expensive, so the onus is still on you to market (spoilers, these days marketing is on you no matter what). You also have more leeway in edits and covers- I designed AR's rough cover and worked with the artist directly! That's uncommon.
Most indie publishers also have a common royalty scheme where you pay it back. This isn't a hallmark of a scam, it's pretty normal: You get advance cash upfront, but then do not earn royalties until your book has paid itself off. Which it may not. Angel Radio sold for 500$, not a huge amount but not exactly tiny, especially for a teen. But I haven't earned a penny on royalties because it never sold well enough! I think I'm a little over halfway there.
Traditional Publishing
(I don't have a book of this type. yet...?)
Y'know, like, books?
+Large advance +Big support team +Marketing +Books on shelves +Most lucrative and recognizable -Sharper deadlines -Least control and rights -Must query (hardcore mode) -Still marketing yourself
Traditional publishing is the longest timescale and hardest method. Obvs. You again are looking to write a good query, but now you need to go through a literary agent. You query an agent with your book (again, should only ever be free), the agent then essentially queries publishers on your behalf ("out on submission"). An agent is your liaison to the business of publishing, taking a portion of your earnings for the service. You just can't make it into publishing without an agent.
A query letter ideally is... roughly, quickly, this is my format guide.
Hi there [actual agent name]
I'm here proposing my cool book, XYZ of ABC, a GENRE book of ??k words that IS SOMETHING UNIQUE SELLING POINT. MAIN CHARACTER is LIKE THIS but faced CONFLICT when PLOT HAPPENS, in SOME KINDA WORLD OR WHATEVER. THIS IS THE PART WHERE YOU WRITE A 2-3 SENTENCE PLOT BLURB. But when TWIST happens, will MC have SOME EYECATCHING IDEA? This book will appeal to fans of THIS KINDA THING and is extra good because RELEVENT DETAIL LIKE OWNVOICES. I believe JUST KEEP SELLING KID. I myself SOME SORT OF ACCOMPLISHMENT LIKE UNI, PAIRED WITH A RELEVANT HOBBY. thank you for your time
Hot and dirty, something like that. You gotta recall at all times this is a market. It is economic. Your passion... matters, but uh. It doesn't matter. Gosh that sounds rough. But make your passion clear but your sound business proposal clearer: You need to show why your book is worth picking over thousands of other queries.
Querying is a horrible torturous process that does help you slowly build up exposure therapy to rejection and failure. Anyways, that will take a bit typically (I've been querying on and off for ten years for an agent, but a lot has been 'off' time). Then you wait and eventually, bam! Probably post some edits, your book is sold.
You still wait a long time though, and have a lot of work to do. So much work. Your book will come out on shelves at the end, sure, but that's still not a promise of success. The author these days is especially the product, and while you start on a higher stage (maybe even the marketing team will f---ing do something), you still gotta claw. There's a high level of scrutiny too on debut authors on any tier, but especially the traditional publishing tier. So your success is very dependent on each book you do, with it being harder and harder to sell books if you aren't doing fantastic.
Still, it's hard to deny the appeal of that mainstream success. Man, I'm chasing it myself! But it's not just easy book out there you go. I'm pals with traditionally published authors and you'll still be very busy, if you can get your foot on the ladder with an agent to begin with. Being on submission generally takes months, and even when your book is with a publisher it may be a lot of time and work before it ever comes out. Even then, hitting the shelves still doesn't mean you're set for life.
Still. Good luck. Go try!
(BTW look at my books, I guess, as a sticker on what I hope is good advice, and good luck! I first decided to try publishing Angel Radio with HIP because of a post by someone else published by them on tumblr... like 10 years ago now....)

How do We Outsource Epub Conversion Services?
Publishers, writers, and other entities seeking fast and cost-effective ePub conversion might consider outsourcing. eBooks are often formatted in ePub, which is compatible with eReaders and mobile devices. Outsourcing eBook conversion lets companies concentrate on their strengths while benefiting from eBook conversion experts. In this detailed blog, we'll tell you how to outsource epub conversion services.
Tumblr media
Understanding ePub Conversion: Understanding ePub conversion is essential before outsourcing. Converting PDF, Word, or InDesign material to ePub, an open standard file format for digital publications, is possible. To guarantee eReader compatibility, text, photos, and other materials are formatted.
Define Your Needs: Before outsourcing, define your project needs. Specify the input format, multimedia complexity, and formatting or stylistic options. Provide specific recommendations to help prospective service providers understand the project scope.
Check Prospective Service Providers: Finding outsourcing partners requires considerable study. Find experienced eBook-converting organizations or freelancers. Consider experience, customer feedback, and service range. Online platforms, industry forums, and references may help identify trusted services.
Verify Technical Expertise: Assess possible service providers' technical skills. Make sure they can utilize Adobe InDesign, Sigil, or Calibre, which are needed for ePub conversion. Test their skills to format tables, pictures, footnotes, and hyperlinks.
Quality Assurance and Testing: eBook conversion requires quality assurance. Ask about the provider's proofreading, device testing, and ePub standard compliance. Ask for examples or case studies to evaluate their work.
Pricing Strategies and Transparency: Know possible outsourcing partners' pricing strategies. Some give set project prices, others by page or hour. Pricing should be transparent and encompass revisions and post-delivery assistance for the conversion process.
Due to the sensitive content, prioritize data security and confidentiality. Ask about secure file transmission methods and non-disclosure agreements. Make sure the outsourcing partner follows data protection laws.
Communication and Project Management: Outsourcing requires good communication. Select a service provider with an effective communication and project management system. A defined point of contact, project updates, and quick replies to questions help cooperation.
Scalability and Flexibility: Assess the outsourcing partner's capabilities. Check their ability to convert high quantities on schedule. Project scope and demand modifications necessitate flexibility.
Conclusion Outsourcing ePub conversion simplifies content digitization for digital dissemination. Following these processes and factors, firms may choose the ideal outsourcing partner for their purposes. Working with a reliable epub conversion services provider assures ePub conversion quality and accuracy and lets companies concentrate on their main goals while extending their digital presence in the booming eBook market.

The work that goes into producing a full-length fiction novel is enough for a full-time staff with at least a forty-hour work week. For many indie authors, including myself, it is typically a one-person operation. There are authors with teams, helpers, and roped-in family members, but even for multi-person scribe-squads, the workload can be daunting. The tasks run from the actual writing/typing, editing, marketing, and, among other things, designing the art. When it came to my debut young adult sci-go superhero novel, Unsecret Identity: Eric Icarus - Book One, I ultimately ended up tackling these assignments solo.
Simply because I wear many hats when it comes to creating this particular story does not necessarily entitle me to any special treatment or extra credit. As previously mentioned, there are numerous writers who bear the work weight on their shoulders with not much assistance. My journey so far has seen numerous learning curve-balls thrown my way as I figure out this whole author thing on the fly. I still have miles to go before I can go around boasting about my writing skill—the biggest lesson so far is that you never stop learning. Trends change, tastes differ, and technology advances. As I continue to develop my techniques, I roll with more punches than I hand out hits.
Speaking of technology, my experience as a graphic designer has proved to be greatly beneficial when creating cover art. Utilizing software programs like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, I am able to format the manuscripts as well as include interior art. As of this writing, Unsecret Identity is nearing its completion in transitioning from being only available as an ebook to a printed paperback edition. I was prepared to cross the finish line when I decided to insert more illustrations as part of the book. It’s an exciting concept that could help set the novel apart and further express my vision of the characters and settings, but… it also means more delay.
This is where tech comes back into play. I’ve been drawing my entire life, but as pencillers know, the sketching process can be time-consuming. Digital drawing has changed the game for me: using the Apple Pencil on an iPad while running the Procreate drawing program has drastically improved my illustration process. Don’t get me wrong, I believe I will always prefer the traditional method, but using a stylus on a smooth screen not only allows me to zoom in for meticulous detail (along with an overwhelming amount of brush choices), but the slick glass surface is much more preferable for me. I’m not sure why exactly, but I've always had a sensitivity to the feel of paper. So, naturally my greatest interests are writing and drawing—two paper-based hobbies. Thanks to the digital age, the only limit is my imagination (and battery life).
Well, there is at least one other limit - my time. Similar to other self-publishing authors, my writing time is usually whenever I can carve out a short period throughout a typical day. As quick and convenient as tablet drawing can be, it’s still a matter of how exhausted I am after tending to “real life” commitments. This leads to the reason I do not simply outsource the jobs: cheap labor! I don’t consider myself a control freak, though saying that, it is a bit of a point of pride to be able to complete these mounting tasks myself. The entire book-making process is a gauntlet but it’s something I can use all talents for (opinions on the end result may have some questioning the extent of this talent, but, hey, like I said, it’s cheap labor!).
As if performing all these duties with a lack of downtime wasn’t enough of a challenge, I intend on recording the audiobook version of Unsecret Identity myself. I am not sure if I’m a jack of all trades or a glutton for punishment, but regardless, I’m ready to DIY.
Stay in the loop for more details by following Jonfcition Blog on Substack and be sure to check out jonmcbrine.com for more info about this and all my books.
Unsecret Identity: Eric Icarus - Book One is available now from the Amazon Kindle store.

Best Content Creation Software to Help You Write Better
If you’re looking for the best content creation software to help you write better, you’ve come to the right place. In this blog post, we’ll recommend three of the best content creation software programs that can help improve your writing.
Whether you’re a professional writer or just getting started, using one of these programs can help take your writing to the next level. Not only will they make it easier and faster to produce quality content, but they can also give you access to powerful features that will make your writing even better.
Best Content Creation Software for Blogging
As a blogger, you know that content is king. Creating high-quality, engaging content is essential to growing your audience and furthering your career. But what’s the best way to create this content?
There are many different ways to approach creating blog content. Some bloggers prefer to write everything themselves, while others outsource some or all of their writing. And still others use a mix of both methods.
There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to how you create your blog content. ultimately, the best method is whatever works best for you and helps you produce the type of content that will resonate with your audience. If you’re not sure where to start, though, here are five of the best pieces of software for creating great blog content:
Best Content Creation Software for Businesses
There’s no shortage of content creation software on the market today. So, how do you choose the best one for your business? Here are a few things to consider:
First, what kind of content will you be creating? If you need to create visual content like infographics or videos, make sure the software you choose has strong visuals capabilities. Likewise, if you’ll be mostly creating written content, look for software with powerful writing and editing tools.
Second, who will be using the software? If it’s just for yourself, then any basic word processing program should suffice. But if multiple people will be collaborating on content creation, then you’ll need something more robust like Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Third, what’s your budget? There are free and paid options available depending on your needs. Be sure to compare features and pricing before making your final decision.
BestContent Creation Software for Students
There are various software programs available to help students create content. Here is a list of some of the bestcontent creation software for students:
1. Adobe Creative Suite- This suite offers a comprehensive set of tools for Content Creators, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. It is widely used in both the graphic design and publishing industries. Students can benefit from using these tools to create high-quality visuals for their projects.
2. iWork- This software includes Keynote (presentation), Pages (word processing), and Numbers (spreadsheets). It is designed with an intuitive interface that makes it easy for users to get started creating content right away. These applications are great for students who need to produce professional-looking results without spending a lot of time learning complex features.
3. Google Apps- Google provides a free suite of apps that includes Docs (word processing), Sheets (spreadsheets), Slides (presentations), Forms (surveys/quizzes), and Drawing(graphics). These web-based apps can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, making them ideal for collaborative work or distance learning situations.
Best Content Creation Software for Teachers
There are a lot of content creation software options out there, and it can be tough to decide which one is best for you. If you’re a teacher, though, there are some programs that stand out above the rest. Here are four of the best content creation software options for teachers:
Adobe Creative Suite is probably the most well-known and widely used content creation suite in existence. It includes programs like Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, which give you everything you need to create stunning visual materials. The downside to Adobe Creative Suite is that it can be expensive; however, if you’re able to swing the cost, it’s definitely worth considering.
Canva is a newer player on the scene but has quickly become one of the most popular content creation tools around. It’s beloved by users for its ease of use and wide range of features; plus, it’s free (with paid upgrades available). Whether you need to create an infographic or a simple presentation slide deck, Canva should be your go-to tool.
3rd party cms platforms such as WordPress
WordPress is perhaps better known as a blogging platform than a content management system (CMS), but it can actually be used for both purposes quite effectively. While WordPress does have some limitations in terms of design flexibility compared to something like Adobe Creative Suite (or even Canva), its user-friendliness makes up for that deficit in many cases—plus, there are tons of plugins and add-ons available that can help extend its functionality..
Best Content Creation Software for Gamers BestContentCreationSoftwarefor Musicians . .10
As a musician, you know that producing great content is key to success. But what’s the best content creation software out there? Here are 10 of the best options for creating high-quality music and audio content.
Conclusion
There are a lot of software options out there for content creation, but which one is the best? It honestly depends on what you need and what you’re looking for. However, if we had to narrow it down to just a few, here are our top picks for the best content creation software.
1. Adobe Creative Suite- If you’re looking for comprehensive editing and design tools, Adobe Creative Suite is hard to beat. While it’s not strictly writing software, it has everything you need to create beautiful visuals to accompany your words.
2. Scrivener- This program was designed specifically for writers, and it shows. It’s packed with features like outlining and organization tools that make writing long documents a breeze. Plus, its distraction-free mode ensures that you can stay focused on your work instead of getting sidetracked by social media or other online distractions.
3. Google Docs- Yes, really! Google Docs has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a simple word processing program. These days, it boasts powerful features like version control and collaboration tools that make it perfect for team projects or multi-author works

Why Should A Client Choose An Established Company For Getting Catalogues Designed?
Tumblr media
A well-designed catalog is part of the marketing strategy. As it contains all the information about the product, it can help generate leads and get conversions. But, Catalog Design Service is probably considered to be a niche area where only a few companies can be said to hold a good reputation. In this blog, we will discuss the reasons for choosing a company with a lot of experience designing catalogs.
The company will collaborate with the client
Elaborate consultation is required when it comes to designing catalogs. This is because every product is unique, and the demographics it caters to are also different. All these things have to be considered before the designing process starts.
An established company will have an in-house team
Many companies outsource the work to a third party which hurts the results. An established company with experience in the catalog will have copywriters to write product descriptions in-house.
A work portfolio is maintained by the company
Most companies will not have any previous work to show. But, a reputed company will have a portfolio of previous work done. The clients can even choose a particular style of catalog from among them.
A design proof will be sent to the client
Before it goes for printing, a design proof will be sent to the client for approval. Revisions will be carried out based on the suggestions given by the client. A reputed company will be on its toes till the delivery of the catalog. At every step, the focus is on making the catalog error-free.
Many formats are available with them
A one-size-fits-all approach does not work in catalog design. Rules need to be bent to achieve a particular look for a catalog. Designing software like InDesign helps the catalog design service company experiment with newer formats.
The name of the game is customization  Since the clientele of a company providing catalog design services may vary widely, they need to customize. High-quality product photos can be provided by established companies. For this, the company has an in-house team of photographers, photo editors, and photo retouchers.

What You Need To Know About Speeding Up Your Graphic Design Process
Tumblr media
Having a graphic design London strategy for your business is an essential part of your marketing efforts. You can reach a new segment of your audience with it, make your website look more professional and polished, and give your brand a more unique identity with it. While there is a lot to do as a graphic designer, it can sometimes be challenging to keep up with all the demands that are part of the job.
To help you increase the speed with which you complete your graphic design task, we have put together this 2023 guide.
The following tips will give you a head start on your holiday shopping.
Establish a template and style guide for your project
When you work on web design Barnet projects, putting together templates and style guides is an efficient way to save time and effort. Using templates as a starting point for each project will ensure that you do not have to start from scratch before you begin the project.
Additionally, they are also very useful in ensuring that you have a consistent look across all of your designs, which is a big part of branding. As well, style guides help you maintain consistency by providing guidelines for the use of typography, color palettes, logos, and other design elements related to your work.
Get the right tools for the job by investing in them
In order to speed up your graphic design process, you need to have the right tools at your disposal, and having the right tools can be a big help to you. The best way to start is by investing in top-of-the-line software-Adobe Illustrator or InDesign are both great options-as well as high-quality stock photography sites and font libraries that will allow you to find exactly what you need quickly and easily. Investing in a graphics tablet or pen display can also be helpful for those who plan to use Photoshop for a lot of sketching and drawing.
If necessary, outsource the work
A great way to speed up your workflow is by outsourcing some of your tasks so that you do not have to compromise on the quality of your work. In order to improve your efficiency, you don't have to outsource everything just focus on those tasks that take too long or that require specialized skills that you don't possess.
Is your graphic design process ready to be sped up? Give these tips a try?
If you are ready to start, click here? Let's get started?
It is inevitable that deadlines will be met.
We live in a world where deadlines are a necessity. The ability to seek support when you are under deadline pressure is extremely important. Whether you are working for yourself or for someone else, it is important to know when to ask for help.
Occasionally, you may be able to meet deadlines on your own, but in other cases, it might be best to hire someone else to help you. It's certainly true that there are many benefits to outsourcing tasks, such as being able to do more in less time, save time by not having to pay for an office space, and be able to focus on what you do best without having to worry about other things, such as bookkeeping or web design.
The deadlines that you have to meet need to be met, regardless of whether you are a freelance graphic designer.
It is common for graphic designers to have a lot of clients, so they have to keep busy. There is a need for you to be able to meet their deadlines, even if they are not your only client. Your clients need to know that you can deliver on time so that they can put their money to good use and get the most out of their investment in your services for the money they spend.
It is important not to fall behind deadlines as a graphic designer. If you are slow in meeting deadlines, your clients will lose confidence in your ability as a graphic designer and may look to someone else for help with their projects--or worse yet, they might stop working with you altogether.
The problem is that sometimes you may find that there is simply not enough time to complete all the projects you have.
Although you may want to complete as many tasks as possible, you might eventually find that you simply do not have the time to do so. The cause of this could be any one of the following.
There are too many things on your plate at the same time, so you are overwhelmed
There is a need for help from outside to help your team when you are stretched thin
It is evident that your current staff lacks certain specialized skills that you need
You might need some help with things like social media marketing and ensuring that your website is maintained on a regular basis.
When it comes to building a brand and connecting with potential customers, social media is a great way to do that. Socializing is not the only purpose of it.
Maintenance of your website is another area in which you may need some help from a professional. You can outsource this work to someone else so that you don't have to worry about it taking up time that would be better spent elsewhere in your business (like creating new content).
Hire an assistant when you need him or her instead of trying to handle everything yourself
Getting the right help when you need it is the key to success.
You may find it difficult to take care of everything yourself if you are just starting out in the field. As you might not have the funds or resources to hire an assistant, outsourcing can be an excellent option for you to save time and money in the long run compared to taking on a full-time employee.
If there are certain tasks that aren't making progress quickly enough due to lack of experience or expertise on your part, consider hiring someone who can take over those responsibilities so that they can focus on other aspects of their business--like writing blog posts.

How to Organize a Zine 101 #15
I’ve been putting this specific topic off since forever because ever since I thought about writing about it, I figured I should make a quick and sweet InDesign tutorial for it.
Alas, four whole ass years have passed, I came to the conclusion that I might never do such a thing and thus I’ll try to explain this the best I can in the simple format of a blog post (or several). Let’s talk
Designing your Zine Pt. 1: Software Picks
So, I don’t know if you know but I have a bachelor’s degree in Communication Design. Therefore I will be more thorough than I’m going to be on book-keeping and other stuff surrounding zines that I do not have a degree in.
First of all, I’d generally advise you to have an actual designer on your mod team, or outsource this portion to a designer/design student who focusses on layout and typography. Despite popular belief, only because you can draw well, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be a good designer, and vice versa. There are people who are good at both (like me, if I may say so myself), but it’s not the rule. So yes, that’s a thing.
But now, what if you don’t have someone to take over this part and you need to do it yourself? Or you are a designer but just never worked in print before?
Things I will stress is, get yourself a program specifically for designing layouts.
The most widely known/used one is InDesign from Adobe, the most recent version is available through their Creative Cloud subscription (which is ridiculously expensive but guess who is Booboo the Fool and pays for it because it’s industry standard) - students can get it for 50% off though, if you register with your uni email and stuff. Same goes for faculty members if I remember correctly.
There are also old Adobe Creative Suites available (try looking for CS6, that’s the latest before the CC came into the game), which also include old InDesign versions. Maybe you can get your hand at those. I’m not telling you to pirate software, absolutely not, how could I, ABSOLUTELY *DON’T* LOOK FOR PIRATED ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE 6 for your zine endeavours.
Another, much cheaper, option that also can open idml files from InDesign is Affinity Publisher, part of Affinity’s roster of design and photo software. I tried the demo and I think it works just fine, especially if you are not familiar with InDesign anyway. If you are used to InDesign, though, it needs quite some adjustments because it’s close but different, so get acquainted with the program.
If you have the EX version of Clip Studio Paint, you technically could also make your zine within that software, however, I would only recommend it if you have no text to work with, and to my knowledge you can also not really incorporate a design grid. For purely illustrated zines, though, it can work.
I’m sure there are more softwares out there, but I can’t really say anything about them, how they might work or anything like that. One thing though: for the love of everything that’s dear to you, please DO NOT use Microsoft Word or the OpenOffice/LibreOffice equivalent. They are not supposed to do what you need to do to design an actual quality zine. Here’s a quick checklist that you really should keep in mind while searching for a proper software.
Things your layout software definitely should have:
CMYK and RGB mode (CMYK for printed zines, RGB for digital zines)
the option to add bleed to your pages (printing)
option to export as printable and interactive PDFs
option to see and export your file as spreads and single pages
automatic pagnation options
grids. design grids will be your bread and butter
text fields that you can push around on the page
MASTER PAGES/SPREADS
paragraph styles
option to add more than 2 pages to a spread (printing)
option to change page sizing for a single page (printing)
page borders to avoid cutting away from important features like text
hyperlinks and text/page anchors (digital)
major formatting customisation for text, especially with finetuning for leading and kerning
layers (akin to Photoshop layers, mostly to make your life easier)
Now, this isn’t the be-all, end-all, but this is the very baseline you need to do your zine’s design and layout. In future parts I will deal with each individual discipline like text formatting, images, design base rules and other shenanigans. Those I will cover with the Adobe CC simply because that’s the tools I use on the daily, but I’ll try to keep them as general as I can so you can apply them to your personal choice of software.

Note
as a person who literally works as an ebook developer for a traditional publishing company... even major publishers outsource part of the ebook production process. this is mostly due to the sheer number of titles, but like... yeah its a very specialized job and requires a lot of time/effort to create an ebook if you start from scratch. i know that AO3 has the ability to export your entire story as an epub, but from the fics i have done this to, they are in very rough shape as is. it is workable and could be made to look nice with a bit of fiddling, but would take a lot of effort, and if you dont know what youre looking at, it would definitely take WAY more time to get it to look nice. and then trying to follow the publishing guidelines for all retailers and stuff... and then to submit your epub to retailers is a whole other process. publishing companies have a way to do this to batch send epub files to all major retailers that sell ebooks all at once. if you want it to be on more than amazon, you have to go through the process to get THAT done as well. so like. YEAH!!! lot more effort than just click a few buttons and get it up on stores.
yeah!! i use scrivener to write and i haven’t played around much with its epub formats yet, but i’ve formatted enough comic and art books in inDesign to be intimately familiar with how tedious book formatting is 🥲
if unbound doesn’t work out then i’m probably only gonna do amazon/kdp because it’s just too much for me to do all the things

Advanced Photo Editing - Taking Photo Editing to the Next Level
Knowing the basics of photo editing will leave you yearning to know more. Once you start dabbling with your photos, you will get the feeling that there is more that you can do--and this is where advanced photo editing could come into play. You will see that once you get hold of the techniques that will make your photos look more presentable or would make them look like professional works of art, you will be more satisfied with your work once it is done.
Mixing Basic with Intermediate Editing
The first thing that you need to learn about advanced photo editing, whether it is for portraits or non-portraits, is that you will never leave the basics behind. Instead, you will need to balance these by adding on some intermediate editing techniques that will make your photo editing come up with better results. So instead of just adjusting the basic contrast and brightness of your photo, you could heighten this editing up a notch by putting in the exact amount of shadow and highlight details. The midtones should also be given attention as well so that your photo will have a balanced exposure that will increase its quality when it comes to its appearance.
Tumblr media
Advanced photo editing could also include fixing the balance of your photo's colors. This involves shifting the temperature of the color, which could range from a cool tone that will give off a bluish tint or the warm tone that is seen with a yellow tint. You could also make use of tint slider for shifting the magenta and green colors in scenic photographs.
Using Background Removal
If you want to be serious about doing advanced photo editing, then you should also venture into other editing techniques like background removal. If you are using Adobe Photoshop, there are many tools provided by this software that could help a lot in pulling out and changing the background of your photo. With the help of such tools as the background eraser, the magnetic lasso, the pen, and the channel mask, you can already pull out a non-presentable background and replace it with either a solid color or another background of your choosing. There are a great number of tutorials online that could help you get some advanced techniques in photo editing using Photoshop.
Tumblr media
Doing Some Photo Manipulation
One of the oldest advanced photo editing techniques being used by photographers and even by those just dabbling in photography is photo manipulation. A partnership between graphic design and photography that is constantly evolving, photo manipulation is when photo-editing strategies are done to photos so that enhancements or corrections could be made or so that an illusion can come out as a result. If you are the kind of person who would like to come up with some photo art, then photo manipulation is the best photo editing technique that you must master. With this, you could do more complex editing that is not limited to changing the color or the background.
If you need to have some advanced photo editing done on a number of your photos, then you should visit Clipping Path Resource Now.
