I guess a more fitting title would be: Why I Have Grown to Love Minneapolis.

It’s been a city that’s not hard to love. From the allure of being along the Mississippi River, to the comfort of having well-groomed parks nestled within the city, Minneapolis has thus far been my “goldilocks city” within the States. It’s just right. It’s developed enough to have access to a range of options for an average gal like myself – be it on recreation, shopping, dining.. you name it.

Beautiful landscapes in every season

Minnesota is infamous for its horrible winters. But, what is less known is the fact that (well, a fact based on my own observation, that is!) intense winters make for wonderful spring, summer, and fall. Maybe it’s something emotional – or there could really be a physical phenomenon of the kind – but the coming of spring is much more pronounced, the greeneries of summers are more lush, and the array of colors of fall are more magnificent than other places I’ve seen. And, winters aren’t that bad either. A common snowstorm transforms the city into a seemingly magical winter wonderland!

Convenient public transit and daily commute

Buses and light rail connect the city, internally and out to nearby suburbs. The light rail, which I would call the major artery of the Twin Cities’ mass transportation, has (2) major lines that converge in downtown Minneapolis, and diverge to take people out to St. Paul (Green Line) and to the Mall of America (Blue Line). Along the way, at each station are connecting buses that will take you almost to everywhere within the cities. There are multiple bus routes that run within Minneapolis. With frequencies ranging from every 15 to 30mins, you will not have to wait hours if you happen to miss your schedule. However, do note that expresses buses that have routes to the suburbs often run on a limited number of trips within rush hour only.

On top of that, Minneapolis is known to be one of the safest biking cities in the country. You can actually take your bike (to cut on that walk to the station from your house or apartment) and comfortably sit on the light rail or the bus thereafter since each MetroTransit service vehicle has a bike rack. There also bike lanes and bike trails all over so you can either bike to and/or from work, or go on a leisurely ride around town to your heart’s content.

For those who prefer or have to drive everywhere, rush hour traffic is not that bad either. Relative to other cities in the Midwest, you can usually sense “Minnesota Nice” on the roads. And the one thing I’ve just recently noticed: the road signs in the Twin Cities are significantly larger and readable than other States! It makes a world of difference when you are new to the city.

Minnesota State Fair

Please just see flyers and ads for details as there is sooo much to see and do! It really depends on what floats your boat you know… for me, it’s all the food that you can try! From the must-have’s like Sweet Martha’s cookies and Pronto Pops, to just random deep-fried stuff like deep fried candy bars, the State Fair is never short of interesting and mouth-watering treats for your tastebuds.

Disclaimer: the State Fair Grounds is actually in St. Paul, not Minneapolis – but still, it’s an arm’s reach away. 😉

Great selection of restaurants

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I am glad my job brought me here. There are restaurants in a lot of pockets in the city – in Eat Street, or in Uptown, or Downtown, or Dinkytown, or in Northeast, or in South Minneapolis. Each area caters to the full spectrum of affordability. There could be a classic American diner that’s been serving the same delicious meals for decades situated right across a fancy fusion restaurant that raises the bar for innovation – talk about options, right? Minnesota is also home to a number of African and Hmong immigrants so you can find great restaurants for a variety of interesting and superb cuisines.

Better shopping experience

Minnesota may not have the best shops and boutiques but, in MN, basic needs like food, shoes, and clothing are tax-free! So, you can go on a shopping spree for your closet and feel great about saving up on sales tax.

Big on arts and culture

Downtown Minneapolis is home to a number of theaters that show renowned and respected plays. As for those who prefer still art, during the summers, there are a number of art fairs where upcoming and even known artists display their work. Uptown hosts one biggest art fairs in the country where artists show and sell their masterpieces.

Why I Love Minneapolis I guess a more fitting title would be: Why I Have Grown to Love Minneapolis. It's been a city that's not hard to love.

What would be the most ideal local/regional public transit system in the city of Arlington?

Arlington is currently one of the largest U.S. cities without a public mass transit system. This is interesting because with all that Arlington has to offer, such as Six Flags, AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Park, Hurricane Harbor, UTA, and much more, it still lacks a public transportation system. A system that is convenient to use, reliable, and connects all areas of the city would likely help Arlington thrive. There have been many attempts create city wide transit, however the residents have not been supportive of it in the past and even voted it down three different times since 1980. It may seem like there is a cultural aversion to public transit systems and preference for private vehicle ownership, however the higher than national average rate of car ownership and well established highways do provide a more realistic and convenient means for travel than the other transportation options currently available.

While there is a variety of smaller systems in operation, they are contained within smaller areas of the city, reserved only for specific events, demographics, districts, function, etc., and therefore are not adequate means of transportation for daily life and commuters. Arlington is also unique in that its residents usually do not work in Arlington, and those who work in Arlington are not residents. Because of this, one would imagine that the residents were more supportive of a public transit system that could help them get to work easier and cheaper.

Some examples of these smaller systems are:

- Via Rideshare, which operates in select areas of the city, making connections to key destinations and to the CentrePort TRE station. Riders can book a shared ride using a smartphone application or dial-in phone number for a flat fee of $3. Via typically only operates from 6am to 9pm Monday through Saturday and the small areas of operation change over time.

- Milo, a free autonomous shuttle that can carry 12 passengers, is operating as a pilot project in the entertainment district during Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys games.

- There's also a privately owned trolley company that serves Six Flags Over Texas, Hurricane Harbor and other attractions within the Entertainment District. From 2013 to 2018, average weekday ridership on light rail and buses dropped about 13 percent to 194,495.

- The city also offers Handitran Self-Service for elderly residents and residents with disabilities. Anyone with a disability must apply for a certificate to use the service.

Many potential transit trips are hindered by the difficulty of traveling between a point of origin or destination and the closest high-frequency transit route. This is especially the case in suburban areas with lower population or job densities. This gap between people and service is often referred to as the first/last mile problem.

Because the current transit systems do not work together and are scattered throughout the city in little patches of operation, it would be very inconvenient and unreliable to have to plan a travel route using multiple services.

The ideal public transit system for Arlington, TX would be the culmination of light rail/street cars, buses, bike networks, pedestrian ways, and public spaces that connect the various systems hubs so that the public can conveniently, safely, and affordably transfer from one to the next as they choose. This ideal transit system would gradually come to fruition as Arlington’s population grows and density increases. Such a network would require supportive existing transportation systems to collaborate and for the proper organization and regulation of traffic signaling and intersections in order to be successful. The key to success here is that the various means of transport are interconnected.

People will typically walk to public transportation if it is within a comfortable distance (about a quarter of a mile).

By contrast, Seattle’s entry shows how the city has invested in a frequent and fast bus network, with lots of access points in the densest neighborhoods. That’s led to great success—transit ridership there is outpacing most American cities by a long shot

The cafe is awsome and soo cheap, the area is amazing! For the money we paid id reccomend this place 10 fold and ive been sevrel times before to new york. The shower was ice cold the first night but there was a notice saying they were getting it sorted and i did have hot showers some of the most confortable matresses ive ever had in a hostel. Im sure the facilities were great unfortunatly we diddnt get chance to use them cos we were soo busy. The gym, basketball and pool were busy throughout everyday tho. Great community centre. If u wanna feel a bit more a part of new york instead of one of those easy to scam tourists this is the place! the area is awsome and right next to flushing medows with zoos and museums etc.

It is a great value for NYC! All the staff are very friendly, you can use the gym & there is a tiny little cafe where you can get snacks, bagels, & drinks. I slept very well there – it’s very quiet, warm & cozy.

The room was nicely made and cleaned daily so that was great. They had a huge kitchen (which I didn’t use but it was nice to see it was possible to do so). The place is directly close to the subway on 116th street so this was excellent. I also liked the fact that I could walk towards Manhattan and get to restaurants and bars in that area. It was like a 15mins walk but pretty simple and straight forward.

In our room something was broken on the third day, the facility manager directly checked and repaired immediately. Good service! Bakery directly on the opposite provides good breakfast for a reasonable price.

The room was warm and cozy after a long morning of being out in the cold. The bathroom had towels we weren’t expecting. Had extra pillows in each bed, so I was extra comfy and warm. The location of the hotel was a couple blocks up from where we were planning to visit, along with everything else being at walking distance.

Can’t beat the price anywhere in or near manhattan for this quality of room

At this location, I experience a wonderfully comfortable sleep, nice and unique showers, plenty of hot water. The staff is polite and businesslike. The decor seems to improve over-time. On my last visit, I did not think that my room on the 5th floor should have had two beds. It made the room two crowded with hardly any room to walk around. It was too warm, but I was able to open the window and make it more comfortable. Staff came within ten minutes when I reported that the TV was not working.
