Unveiling the Origins of "In the Black" in Financial Terminology
Written by Delvin In the world of finance, we often come across phrases that seem to have sprung from a bygone era, yet continue to permeate modern discussions. One such phrase is âin the black,â which is deeply rooted in the history of financial record-keeping. The term âin the blackâ is a popular expression used to signify profitability, financial success, or a positive balance. It finds itsâŠ

Can you share about your dissertation on historical trans men? That sounds interesting
man tumblr just straight up didn't give me a notification about this, sorry this late but here's my overdue, overly long rambling about my diss đ€
it's basically about trans cowboys. or an analysis of the formation of the "american identity" amd american ideology that was created during the westward expansion (manifest destiny, american exceptionalism, and the caricature of american masculinity), and how these values were (or were not) represented amongst gender nonconforming groups.
Harry Allen (fka Nell Pickerell) was the classic outlaw type, I had over 40 newspaper articles about his crimes - which included marrying multiple women at one time, most of whom were prostitutes he was supporting. he was the poster child for my dissertation cause of how vocal he was about being a man. finding transmen in history is difficult because of the lack of terminology they had to self-identify, and so many women lived as men for financial and personal security. Allen's mother was even known for showing up at the jail where Allen was being held and asking for her son Harry, refusing to listen to anyone who referred to him as Nell or her daughter. there's actually a dissertation from the 1920s in which Allen did an interview regarding his gender identity, which ngl I was so excited when I found it
Charley Parkhurst lived for over 40 years as a man, and is considered by some to be the first 'woman' who voted in America because he was able to vote as a man. he did an interview with Harpers Weekly (Washoe Revisited, you can find it on the way back machine), where the journalist describes him as a well respected and well known man in the community. he was a stagecoach driver who was known as the driver who could do the routes no other driver could. there's an incredible drawing of Parkhurst in the article, where he's shown as a rugged aging man. Parkhurst wasn't outed until after his death
Theodore Hoffman was the girl-bell-boy at hotels who reached out to newspapers in order to have interviews where he could defend his gender identity. he posed a threat to traditional masculinity because unlike Allen, he wasn't a "degenerate" who was hellbent on causing trouble, so his gender identity couldnt be excused as part of an act to disrupt polite society.
if anyone's interested in transwomen, there's a really interesting discussion surrounding transwomen and race, as the only named accounts of transwomen I could find were Mrs Nash, who was a Mexican women (who married 3 different men, 2 who used her for money, and 1 who was her soulmate who loved her until her death), and Lucy Hicks Anderson, who was a socialite Black woman. both women had their race weaponised against them in order to attack their gender identity. they're incredible women and I recommend looking into them more (especially Mrs.Nash, who I have a soft spot for)
There's some really cool articles on Native American gender identities that I didn't manage to touch on in my diss. the rigid gender structures we know today were laregly a response to two-spirit people, in order to keep the American identity white and heteronormative.
Peter Boags "redressing Americas frontier past" is an incredible book for anyone who wants to read about historic transpeople, and he's written a load of articles where he deepdives into individual people. Susan Stykers "transgender history" is also a great read, and branches out from the American West. library of Congress website has a fuck ton of newspaper articles about Harry Allen (search Nell Pickerell, sort by Washington state 1880-1920)
also all my chapter titles were red dead redemption 2 quotes. so that was pretty cool
#sorry for the formatting i wrote this on my phone lmao#long post#if anyone wants any links to any articles or resources please hmu#i have them all saved still#i love talking about my diss

Hope Because Humanity Is Within Us
âBeing human is given. But keeping our humanity is a choice.â â Ida Protuger
This quote simply showsor tells us that humanity is a choice.Meaning wenare human ourselves but living here in this world, humanity is hard to keep for some of us.
When we get asked, what is humanity? Answering this question is just as easy as a pie. Humanity is the good qualities a human could have. Humanity is our ability to have compassion, care, empathy and love others. Humanity is helping other wherever and whenever, it is being selfless. If humanity is a person, the best example is Mother Teresa. But, the real question is, is there any hope for humanity when some of the human beings keeps on ruining humanity in our world? Our deepest humanity, however, is rooted within the fragility of all of our lives. Unless we work together we are going to be unable to save lots of the earth. If we cannot see that our vulnerabilities, and not our masks of perfection are what bind us to one another, we are going to be left wondering what's wrong with us.
There is such a common scene in human history when the media community says that men have lost their trust in humanity. That's because most people these days are starting to be cruel to themselves and others. They hurt themselves and the people around them. A common problem was the many facts that made this "virus" bigger and affected the whole world. When we talk about humanity, we should think of it only about human life, not because humanity is about humanity, including all humanity on earth. It is also a terminology of the qualities that make us human. For example, the ability to love, be considerate, be creative, and not be a robot or an alien.
We have to keep humanity within us. Why? Because that is our only key to prevent chaos in our modern world. Without a little bit of humanity do you think we can live, sleep peacefully and have friends around us? No. I listed some acts that show humanity from the website Good Housekeeping . ( https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/inspirational-stories/news/gmp5124/random-acts-of-kindness/)
1. Florence Rescue Force - After Hurricane Florence caused devastating flooding in North Carolina this fall, kindhearted citizens like Amber Hersel jumped into action. The volunteer from the Civilian Crisis Response Team helped rescue 7-year-old Keiyana Cromartie and her family from their flooded home on September 14, 2018 in James City.
2. Donor Network - The decision made by Patricia Almonte (right) to donate the organs of her late 3-year-old daughter Veronica Garcia helped save three lives: Essence Walls (left), an 8-month-old baby, received her heart; a 2-year-old received her liver; and a 68-year-old woman received her kidneys.
3. Canine Heroes - A lucky dog got a ride from some unnamed helpers in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew two years ago. Photographer Sean Rayford caught these two men pushing a makeshift boat through the floodwaters in Lumberton, North Carolina.
4. Earthquake Heroes - Frida the rescue dog and her trainer Israel Arauz Salinas went viral for their life-saving efforts during the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook Mexico City in 2017. The 9-year-old Labrador has detected the bodies of 52 people during her career, and the duo recently received their own statue for their service to the Mexican navy.
5. Helping Hand - American Abbey D'Agostino and New Zealander Nikki Hamblin won a special Olympic commendation for their sportsmanship at the 2016 Rio Games. After Hamblin tripped in a 5,000-meter heat, and brought D'Agostino down with her, the American helped her competitor to her feet. Later on in the race, D'Agostino fell again as a result of her twisted leg, but Hamblin stayed by her side until the finish line.
6. Moments after posing for a fun photograph at a local beauty spot, brave teenager Cheng Changjiang was dead. Despite being unable to swim, Cheng, 18, waded into the lake to save the lives of three young children who had got into trouble in the water. But the brave act cost the teenager â branded a âheroâ by onlookers â his life. Cheng was enjoying the public holiday at the rural spot in Xinyang, at Henan province in central China, when tragedy struck.
7. ryclecticâ wrote: âMy Buddy Witnessed an Act of Utter Kindness TodayâŠWhile he was standing on the corner waiting for the crosswalk he saw this woman buy two meals at a street vender and go sit down beside this man and give him one of the meals. She proceeded to introduce herself and talk to him about his life and just shot the [breeze] with him. She wasnât acting superior, she was his equal, she just wanted to talk to and express inclusion to a fellow human being.â
8. This is a picture of a chap called Tully holding a 46 year old, wheelchair bound man with severe mental handicaps. Tully picked him up so he could go on the hay ride with everyone else. 5 minutes into the ride the man got so excited that he peed all over himself and Tully. Tully sat there soaked in pee for the remainder of the 40 minute hay ride. As soon as it was over he changed the mans clothes before his own. If that doesnât show character we donât know what does.
9. I will not let you go. This woman spent 3 hours holding the horseâs head above the tide after it got stuck in the mud on a beach in Australia. The horse was later rescued, unharmed.
10. Strangers Leave her Money While She Gently Sleeps. âalexthegreat90âł wrote: âI took this picture this morning. Ever been somewhere and seen something that amazed you? Iâm at the east side McDonaldâs and this lady was sitting in front of me sleeping. She has everything she owns in a small backpack. Curled up with her blanket she sleeps not knowing what is going on around her. While she is sleeping everyone is getting their money out and putting it on the table so itâs there when she wakes up.â
These are only few of the acts that restored humanity. These acts showed us that no matter how cruel the world is. There are still people out there who shows kindness and selfless love without any hesitation despite any situation. So what are those things that could destroy our humanity? Stephen Hawking who is known for his work on black holes and gravitational singularities thinks that there are three things that ruin our humanity, but I will only cite two. He have this outspoken ideas about human civilization. Hawking suffers from a nerve cell disease just like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, which left him paralyzed and unable to talk without a voice synthesizer. But that hasn't stopped the University of Cambridge professor from making proclamations about the wide selection of dangers humanity faces -- including ourselves. He is part of a small group who voiced out their concerns about artificial intelligence.
First, according to Stephen Hawking, âThe development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," "The human failing I would most like to correct is aggression. It may have had survival advantage in caveman days, to get more food, territory or partner with whom to reproduce, but now it threatens to destroy us all," The Independent reported. I believe that Hawking here is telling us that AI could destroy us just like in the movie entitled Wall-e, we could see there that the AI are already controlling every move of the humans in the ship. They are dependent to the robot around them and donât seem to care to anyone. There would be no care, love and empathy left.
Second, if AI wonât kill us, our own self might kill us. For example, a major nuclear war would likely end civilization, and could wipe out the human race, Hawking added. When asked which human quality he would most like to chose, he chose empathy , because "it brings us together in a peaceful, loving state.â Chaos would be everywhere without humanity.
In the current time, we ask ourselves sometimes, where is humanity? There are certain issues in our modern world that made us question ourselves. Despite those, we should look at the brighter side. There are still good people who we have mentioned above.
This year, our humanity is being tested. During this pandemic time we should remember our humanity. On the occasion of taking care of the elderly, and those who are sick and needy. This is what's happening in countless hospitals, clinics and medical aid units round the world, where truth heroes of this ordeal â the doctors, nurses and physicians ïżœïżœïżœ are risking their lives to avoid wasting others. This deeper humanity must spread to each street, every neighbourhood, every city and each country if we are to defeat the virus with our science and technology but also showing wisdom, compassion and humanity.
In the event that food and fun are what we were destined to be, there is one thing we should remember. Indeed, even creatures can do such exercises. In the event that God made us human, there must be an explanation behind it. No one but people can comprehend the importance of mankind, and it is humankind because of insight that truly gives the center substance to human presence. You needn't bother with a solid financial balance to add to helpful exercises. Paying your family help reasonably is humankind as well. You're prepared to pay a large number of dollars for your clinical test, yet with regards to paying your collaborator; You need to spare each penny. Compassionate exercises ought to never be embraced to pick up distinction or get a superficial point of interest. You can without much of a stretch accomplish popularity through the work you do. Lifting the weighty sack of an elderly person is humankind, helping an incapacitated individual to go across the road is mankind, helping your mom at work is humankind; truth be told, it is humankind to help whoever needs it. How would we express or show mankind? One approach to show our mankind helping poor people and the individuals who crippled. Additionally utilizing indicating counterfeit mankind to pick up distinction ought to never be one your choice. Did you experience finding a major measure of cash and when you return it, there's the incredible inclination that we can't clarify? Since on the event of indicating our humankind to other people, we have that believing that we can not get.
Humanity is significant in our daily lives. It teaches us to understand the problem and gives us ideas. It helps us understand others. Humanities students specialize in writing and critical reading. Humanity encourages us to think creatively. They teach us to explain why we are human and to ask questions about our world. Humanity produces informed and critical citizens. Democracy cannot flourish without humanity. We all need to assist one another. We humans are like that. We need to live by each otherâs bliss â not by each otherâs hopelessness. We donât need to despise and loathe one another. Because that's not what humanity is.
Some may say, we are losing our humanity. No, we are not losing it. We could see it everywhere. It is within us. Humanity is lively and the light is sparkling profoundly within the hearts and souls of numerous individuals from all works of life. They are of all races, societies, social status and religions. It is individuals who see their commitments to the world as their employments and they continuously inquire what can l do to contribute to distant better;a much better; a higher;a stronger; an improved" a stronger world. Itâs just that, humanity is covered by our selfishness, our hatred, all negative traits that prevents us from helping and doing good for someone. Never lose hope for we still have humanity stored in us.

Paper 2 Section A - Model Paragraphs
Q2 â summary and inference on both sources with quotes (8 marks)
Child labour is presented as both horrific and as a form of exploitation in both sources. In Source A it seems awful in âskin was broken and blood ran downâ implying the pain and suffering of the child is high, whereas in source B the emotional rather than physical suffering is shown âI was not allowed to restâ tells us that the child is being worked extremely hard. Both sources explore child labour as a form of suffering. It is also exploitation as Source A compares the child labour to sex work âNo brothel can beat itâ which is very degrading to the children, while Source B tells of the children being âforced into the sex tradeâ which is absolutely disgusting and shows both writers feel appalled by the poor treatment of the children.
Q3 â Language analysis â quotes â terminology â meaning + why? And effect. (12 marks)
First the writerâs attitude appears to be a dislike of the way children are exploited, however she uses facts and a lack of emotive language to present this. She relates the anecdotes from âLakshmiâ a girl who was âsexually assaultedâ showing the true horror of what can happen to children who are abducted. Also, she explores the threats and intimidation âhonour would be destroyedâ implying that the victim was being black-mailed by her captors so she felt ashamed of what had happened to her. The writer also tells us her uncleâs story showing the impact child labour can have on family. The third person account uses rhetorical questions such as âwhat can we really do?â to imply the family are helpless and because they are âpoor Peopleâ no-one will care about their missing children. This reinforces the writerâs attitude as they seem to be highlighting the exploitation of the poor and how the âgreedyâ men have all the power and control. âGreedyâ has connotations of being financially worthwhile to these men and creates a feeling of disgust at these actions. The final repetition of many statistics like âhalf a millionâ creates an understanding of the huge scale of the child labour issue confirms the writerâs attitude is one of horror as the statistics show how awful this is for those children.
Q4 â Comparison â mini essay â intro â 3 paragraphs and conclusion covering 3 quotes from source A and B and using connectives of comparison.
Both writers dislike the exploitation of children and want it to stop. They show this by highlighting the horrible conditions in both sources.
In Source A Lord Shaftesbury presents his speech using facts about the hard labour children suffer from in âcommon practiceâŠdrag carts of coalâ inferring this is hard work for children and shouldnât happen, whereas in Source B the hard work is more domestic rather than industrial. In B the triplets âcooking, cleaning and taking care of childrenâ suggest the girl is being used as a domestic slave, while A appears to make the child sound like an animal.
Another example of cruelty in both sources is how many areas this happens in. In A the listing of geographical areas âShropshire, Derbyshireâ etc. implies that this is fairly normal and lots of people think children working in the mines is okay, but clearly Lord Shaftesbury doesnât. Similarly, in B â16 girls have been lostâ shows also how wide this problem is and how girls are taken from their families to work. Both sources show child labour is happening often and the writer despises this.
Finally, in both sources it is evident that child labour is horrific. In A Shaftesbury is horrified at the terrible conditions and uses his first person experience of a child âstood shivering from the coldâ to emphasise in his speech that this was unacceptable and inhumane. Similarly to this in B the girls are described by the head of a charity trying to help the girls as âcheapest and most vulnerableâ with this emotive plea from him showing that the situation is reprehensible to him and also to many others who are trying to help the child labourers. Both sources show how dreadful they think child labour is.
Clearly the writerâs attitudes towards child labour are similar as they both find it abhorrent.

The 13th
The Netflix documentary, âThe 13thâ is a well understood documentary that can be shown to a wide audience of different people, in order to explain why the US has such high levels of mass incarceration. This documentary serves as a valid source because it not only breaks down current policies and cases, but emphasizes how important historical context is in today's society. Money makes the world go round and since the beginning of time, humans have taken advantage of others in order to financially benefit. The documentary begins explaining slavery and the economic gain of the South before the Civil war. When 4 million slaves were set free, a high economic decline was arising creating problematic issues for southerners who relied on slaves for production. The 13th amendment was enacted in 1865, stating that ïżœïżœNeither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been dully convictive, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction, congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislationâ providing a loop whole for politicians to manipulate the freedoms of a specific group of people. (Duvernay and Moran, YouTube). Alternating the old language of what it means to be black to new language such as âCriminalsâ. Resulting in increasing arrests for petty and minor crimes such as loitering. The criminal justice system at the time would then in turn make these âcriminalsâ do forced labor as a way to accommodate for their financial losses after the Civil War. I argue that this proves that slavery exists now in different forms of policies that harm and target a specific group of people for once again financial gain.
The âBirth of Nation'' was a film released on February 8th, 1915 that explained how blacks were viewed in society during this era. Blacks were dehumanized and seen as monsters. Representations of blacks in this film were animalistic whereas the K.K.K was represented as a glorifying union. The Ku Klux Klan would murder African Americans in mobs, justifying it by stating they are rapists and criminals. During Reconstruction and WWII, segregation laws such as Jim Crow were passed as a way to make African Americans second class citizens in society. It is important to understand that public opinion was altered based on what was being fed from government officials. As the civil rights movement was progressing during this time, more arrests were spiking, resulting in doubling in funding for the criminal justice system. In this era, the drug war was a tactic to control the social mobility of poor, low income communities.
John Ehrilichman, who was council and assistant to President Nixon stated, âThe Nixon Campaign in 1968 and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left, and black people⊠you see what Iâm saying? We knew we couldnât make it illegal to either be against the war or black but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin and then criminalizing both heavily we could disrupt those communities, we could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up there meetings and vilify them night after night in the evening news, did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did'' proving racial intent in terms of policy but difficult to prove because of terminology. (Duvernay and Moran, YouTube). This small quote is a factor that contributes to institutionalized racism and a different form of slavery in the 21st century. Nixon is not the only president that centralized crime as a tactic to win the election, but presidents following him attempted to incorporate handling crime in America through harsher punishments and sentences

I Wish You All a Happy New Year! Nowâs a Great Time to Earn Back on All You Spent During the Holidays⊠Discover the Cent Platform! Mournful salute and reverence, Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Greetings to all and again I bid you best wishes for the new year, may you have an abundance of Light, Life, Love and Liberty throughout this, the new year, having merely flowed in upon us all, from the winds of constructive, transformative change that brought them heretofore they reached us, from the deepest confines of infinite possibilities! You may think: âWhat is this guy smoking? Iâll have what heâs having!â after reading the aforementioned preceding comment you now just read. (chuckles) But hold on! Since my essential objectively subjective philosophical contribution (just a little sprinkle, I swear!) has been as savantly served and as skillfully consumed as could be for the circumstances given, then hopefully, it will end up processed and assimilated accordingly, while it yet remains probable, still not impossible, that the task might leave more than one, myself included, as baffled as the next fellow⊠⊠But I digress. Not that discussing philosophical and spiritual rhetorical allegories doesnât have its charm, but to each event, its right locale, to every object, its convenient location and disposition, to each person, its natural time and place, so these things shall come to take place in the proper setting and timing. Speaking of which, in the meantime, I want to talk about an ETHEREUM BLOCKCHAIN BASED decentralized blogging platform named CENT, where content creators, curators and consumers alike (yes, you can make decent money (no pun intended) just by developing a flair for a good story and SEEDING those posts early), such that you think have the most potential, as you will then, even as you yourself are rewarding the content creator through curation (seeding) , receive a fraction of every other consecutive SEED other users made following yours once the postâs eligibility for seeding expires, thus rewarding the implicated content creators and curators in a chain of what I felt so far was a WELL BALANCED REDISTRIBUTION OF THE VALUE CREATED BY THE USERS, as even the curators get some of their SEED back, giving fair recognition to all contributions. It might sound a bit complicated, as much as my fancy English presents it, but technical jargon aside, the way it works is actually quite simple: You can earn on CENT, as already mentioned, either/and/or, by â creating posts, including ideally your original content, accompanied with appropriate links and quoting the source of any work of reference or research used by the blogger. You can also earn tips as you interact with other users through the comments they leave on your post, as you attract their acclaim and their direct generosity. You can also tip them yourself, to reward their interaction or congratulate a comment you deem pertinent or as adding value to the post. â commenting on posts and their comments, sometimes making it in the form of an answer if the post includes a bounty that requires users to perform a certain task or set of tasks, in order to be allowed to benefit from said bounty reward, after it was sorted (voted) by the most users possible, inside a delay set for expiration of the post at the inception of the latter, rewarding the victors directly into their CENT wallet (the platformâs âsmart contractâ, linked to the Ethereum blockchain, where your coins remain safely, available for trade through that âsmart contractâ without ever leaving, until the trade has been successfully completed and the order closed or canceled, out of the hands of any third party, thus demonstrating the decentralized nature of the platform in more than just an exercise in terminological acrobatics. So that about wraps it up for now, as I will conclude by telling you that you need to have a metamask wallet setup, the same, or a similar add-on you might use already for other blockchain based dApps, be it on Ethereum or any other âsmart contractâ oriented platform with dApp deployment capabilities. Just start with their post on MEDIUM (http://bit.ly/2jI6EL0) if you feel you want to read a bit more before jumping in, otherwise, FEEL FREE TO JUMP RIGHT IN!!! , just click the link and see for yourself what the fuss is all about! Now that Ethereum is slowly on the rise, coming back after its monumental melt-down, a few weeks back, and considering A HARD FORK OF THE ETHEREUM BLOCKCHAIN NAMED CONSTANTINOPLE is bound to occur, somewhere around the mid to late January, possibly around the 15 or so, according to the CEO of the popular centralized exchange BINANCE. At the time of the forking, and the following day, TWO COMPLETELY NEW COINS will be airdropped automatically from a snapshot at the time of the forking block, to given ratios and in currency of coins you can research elsewhere. From what I understand, the Ethereum Classic blockchain would also be involved in one of the forks, another new coin being created, as there are more than one, the effect of all these combined factors ending up irresistibly pulling the price of ETHER upward, to the joy of the speculators and HODLers. These however, do not constitute financial advice, as cryptocurrencies are VERY volatile and you should NOT invest money you cannot afford to lose. DO YOU OWN RESEARCH! You can join us on CENT by following this link: https://beta.cent.co See you out there! Love is the Law, love under will. Here are 4,700 words worth of Mike Leachâs most memorable quotes
The former Texas Tech and current Washington State head coach has a long history of saying stuff.
Mike Leach has opinions on everything. Fans and media members like getting him to express those opinions. Letâs get right to it. Iâm sure Iâm missing a lot, so throw them in the comments for now.
Acoustics
Oklahoma's [stadium is] louder [than Oregon]. A&M's louder. Texas is on the bubble. Nebraska was definitely louder. LSUâs louder. I never went to Alabama. We beat Alabama, but it was at Kentucky. Depending whether or not you at the cowbells, Mississippi Stateâs comparable. Georgiaâs louder. Floridaâs louder. Definitely in that one end zone at South Carolinaâs louder. Tennesseeâs louder.
Little Rock, Arkansas, itâs as if you had a football game in the neighborsâ basement and all the kids were yelling louder than hell, and you could tell when you were starting out. Youâd clap your hands and youâd hear it five times and yell, âGo, go, go, go, hit, hit, hit, hit.â Well, then after, and you figure thereâs 45,000. You multiply that times five. That equals approximately 250,000.
Being the bad guy
It was right during the Gulf War, so we beat Navy, which was quite a deal, cause there was 300 million people that were ticked off and 250,000 that were happy. Itâs like being the Oakland Raiders in the â70s. It was awesome.
The Chicago Cubs
Thereâs some teams â the Cubs are one of them â where thereâs just too many fans. Theyâre one of those teams that, for whatever reason â I guess itâs cause people like the way their uniforms look or something â every yuppie with a BMW or some special attachment to its computer or some designer set of jeans or something like that is a Cubs fan and refers to it as âmy Cubbies.â
If you say âmyâ in front of your team, well, then thatâs dubious, OK? You know, âmy this, my that.â Come on, now. And so you get âmy Cubbies.â You donât get âmy Indians.â You get âmy Cubbies,â OK?
And I think thereâs just too many out-of-the-woodwork people that like âem, that just like âem cause they like the uniforms, donât know the first thing about baseball, probably have never even attended a Cubs game, but thatâs just gonna be their team since they have something to talk about over the copy machine and the cooler.
So as a result, you know, going against the whole wave of probably seven-eighths of America, I want the Indians. Me and the city of Cleveland.
Coffee
Mike Leach cooling off his hot coffee while Mark Dantonio answers a question during the Holiday Bowl press conference is the best Mike Leach moment ever. http://pic.twitter.com/jN6QyuUhDS
â Sam Adams (@SWXSamAdams) December 27, 2017
Concentration
Iâve specifically concentrated on not concentrating on this, and up to this point, Iâve done a really good job.
Craig James, the ESPN commentator who got Leach outed at Texas Tech
I think my opinion is consistent with most of the rest of America's. This is illustrated by a poll done in the Dallas Morning News where people were asked who they would vote for senator: Mike Leach or Craig James. I got 96.5 percent of the vote.
Dancing
All Scandinavians feel a tiny bit self-conscious, of which Iâm one. Iâm supposed to be outgoing and interesting; no, Iâve always been insecure about dancing. I was when I was in high school.
They used to have a segment of P.E. when I was in grade school. I used to get kicked out when theyâd have square dancing.
I have always felt insecure about dancing. My wife is a great dancer. But I donât dance. I walk in place, if Iâm forced out there. I donât have any religious reservation about it, and I respect people who can dance great. I donât look like Elaine from Seinfeld, but all Iâm going to do is tread water in place and make it go away.
Itâs like in junior high. You want social interaction. Long story short, if youâre a guy, you want to meet girls and vice versa. What a horrible social event. So Iâm going to burst into dance? No, Iâm not.
I was good at dodgeball. I bordered on great at dodgeball.
Dating in Cody, Wyo.
I'm a big movie guy. If you want to do it more like I did when I was your age, you can go to the Stars & Stripes Theatre because that's what they had in Cody, Wyoming. But otherwise, the movie theater's pretty good. But then you want to end it at some cool coffee shop-type of place, where there's bizarre-looking characters going in and out, so if the conversation isn't going well, you can reference some of the different characters you see coming and going from the place.
If it's a huge night and you're really having a good time, then you can trade computer schemes and emails and mischief that people are up to nowadays, which I know nothing about.
Dating in Lubbock, Texas
You want some place casual to begin with, because you don't want something real formal in the beginning. So some place casual. I recommend Cagleâs steakhouse, which is very casual. The other thing that's great about it is there's very little salad there at Cagleâs.
Dating in Moscow, Idaho
First take her to CDs Pit House BBQ in Moscow, ID. If she will get her hands dirty with some great BBQ, you will know you are on the right track!
Dating in Provo, Utah
Went to A&W [for my first date with my wife]. Had just finished a rugby game, went to A&W, had a coupon book. She said, âWhat are you getting?â Sheâs looking at the menu, âWhat looks good? What are you getting?â I handed her the 2-for-1 coupon book. I said, âI donât know, but hereâs the menu.â Seems to me we got some kind of bacon hamburger thing. She got a root beer freeze. I do remember that.
Then there was a Polynesian food place called the Bamboo Hut but that was closed at that point. The Bamboo Hut was a middle of the day thing that was open from like 11 to 3 or something like that. That was a Joe Salaveâa kind of place.
Dating in Pullman, Wash.
I would go to Black Cypress, if you really want to make a good impression. If you want just good, solid food and arenât as into the atmosphere, Iâd go to Mongolian Fire, which I really like. So one of those two. But if you go to the more high-end Black Cypress, Iâd talk to Nick beforehand because he has the menu and itâs all really good. Heâs got some great appetizers and heâll come by and keep hitting you up â hereâs this, try that â and I think it should work out really well.
Dating with financial savings
If youâre just trying to dress your life up a little and pretend you have a relationship, then maybe you donât want to use the coupon book, if itâs some kind of a volume deal. But if you want to zero in on one or two [serious relationships], break out the coupon book, saw off the weak right off the top, so you can get down the path to find the right one.
Itâs worked out pretty good, because Iâve been married ⊠I canât remember, a long time. Thirty years or something.
Deflategate
With everything thatâs going on, we're worried about how much air goes into a ball, when everybody uses their own ball. It's not like it's a forged football. We waste a lot of time with that, and then we worry about the Kardashians. How can it be that we laugh about England's obsession with the royal family? At least the royal family has college degrees and military service.
Disco
What a dark time for our country.

Expanding the College Football Playoff
(Heâs been talking about this one non-stop for at least 11 years now.)
âFat Little Girlfriendsâ
Leach has repeatedly used âFat Little Girlfriendsâ as a symbol of distractions or something?
We pound on Kansas State, so A&M looks at the film all week. [My players] strut around and laugh, you know, ho-ho-ho, ha-ha-ha, and [my players] listen to their Fat Little Olâ Girlfriends, and pretty soon, what happens in Manhattan happens [to us].
Well, the first thing we do is we go in our meeting and we talk about we're going to respect everyone; we're going to fear no one. We're not going to compare scores, and we're not going to listen to our Fat Little Girlfriends.
Later that week:
As coaches we failed to make our coaching points more compelling than their Fat Little Girlfriends. Now their Fat Little Girlfriends have some obvious advantages. For one thing, their Fat Little Girlfriends are telling them what they want to hear, which is how great you are and how easy it's going to be. Iâm willing to go to fairly amazing lengths to make that happen. There will be some people inconvenienced, and if that happens to be their Fat Little Girlfriends, too bad.
Leach later made two editions of the Fat Little Girlfriends Cookbook with his wife.
Fighting
If you get into a fight, don't take your helmet off. We're looking for smart football players, not dumb ones. In the interest of time, don't get into any more fights today.
Fish
âNow, why would you want to use live bait? It seems to me the faster, more active fish would have to take the live bait, but that's not what you want, is it? You want the big fish.â
He's addressing the air, or us, or no one in particular, or everyone, or maybe just the dying light of the sun burning a brilliant purple-red hole hole in the horizon.
âIf I'm a big, fat, lazy fish, I'm not gonna work. I'm gonna eat the dead fish. It wouldn't make a difference to me, would it?â
The captain says something, but it's cut off by Leach's closing argument.
âFish aren't smart. It's not like they have advanced degrees.â

Football terminology
âWhy do you call the slot receiver in your playbook the Elf?â
Leach laughs. âBecause that was Wes Welker, and Welker looks like an elf? One time it's late, like 11 o'clock or midnight on Sunday, and we're having an offensive staff meeting when Welker comes in, and he's wearing an elf costume. Tights, the whole thing. He jumps up on the table and does a little jig. He's smiling, and then he jumps down, and just before he leaves he clicks his heels and then runs out of the door.â

Georgiaâs gnats
âThe Macon crowd, it's funny, but they can sit there like nothing's happening and there can be gnats just biting the hell out of your face. And they'll just be, 'Da da da,' talking, and it doesn't even bother them. Even down in Valdosta, where the gnats rarely got down there, because it's too hot, I guess. This one high school coach, I'm down there recruiting, and he nudges me and says, âTry this.â Well I've got these big, fat, old lips, so it doesn't really work as well. But he'd fire up a little puff and just blow the gnats right off.â
A reporter tried to ask a question.
Leach: âAnd then Skin So Soft, I don't know exactly what that is, but evidently gnats don't like that. So they'd rub that all over and there'd be these fresh-smelling people everywhere who still had some gnats on them and looked kind of oily, you know? And what I think is, the gnats don't really care about [the Skin So Soft], but it probably puts a little sheet of oil on you so it's harder for 'em to bite you. You don't feel the bites. That's just one guy's theory; I'm sure I'm wrong.â
Again, the reporter: âCan you talk about some of your marquee games as...â
Leach: âWell, that's a fascinating question. So, Valdosta. Valdosta's hotter, yeah, and you're right by the Okefenokee Swamp, and there's alligators and water moccasins, and great fun is had by all. Now what was your question?â
Goths
Thereâs all these goths, thereâs like six goth people. Well, theyâre more like between Iâm gonna say 20 and 30-year-old goths. You know, they didnât have school its not like they were skipping school. And who knows, I donât know what theyâre going to do â âHey how you guys doing, great cemetery up here!â â and they just kind of gave me a frowney goth look, and just sort of nodded.
Because goths arenât in good moods anyway, I mean everythingâs about spider webs and black hair, black this â really white faces.
So anyway, hopefully I made about six new friends, but they didnât speak much, so.
Halloween candy
I think candy cornâs awful. You know, itâs like fruitcake. Thereâs a reason they only serve fruitcake once a year, because itâs awful. Thereâs a reason they only serve mint julepâs once a year, because theyâre awful. Now, that does beg the question, âwhy they serve it at all?â But anyway, thatâs my opinion. You eat it by the handfuls, because thatâs all thatâs left, and you get sick.
Home defense
I do have a Viking axe by the bed, if I need to whack someone. My wife bought me a Viking axe. The axe side curls down so you can grab the adversary around the neck and you can use it to climb walls, as a grappling hook.
Incorporating othersâ opinions
âI called six, or our call for four verticals. We had it, and I called it, and Kliff [Kingsbury, the QB] shook me off. Now most of the time I'm fine with quarterbacks shaking me off, but we had this, and I got mad and called time out and said some things to Kliff.â
Leach spits in the ocean.
âSo Kliff goes out there, and I call six again, and he shakes me off again, and now we get delay of game. It's fourth down, and we're on our own 40, but I just call it again and have some words with Kliff. We hit it against that corner cheating up for a touchdown, and Kliff comes up and starts yelling at me angry on the sideline. âFINE, FINE, ARE YOU HAPPY NOW? WE DID IT YOUR WAY, AND NOW ARE YOU HAPPY?â And I was.â

Kingsbury would go on to coach Texas Tech himself
Injury reports
Any stuff on that is so closely guarded. I donât know if you saw Harry Potter, but in the basement of this building, itâs guarded by serpents and wild dogs and things like that, and you can go try to find the secret to that, but chances of survival ... always a risk. Heck, it took until movie five before he got it done himself, and he had magic powers.
Anyway, [QB Connor Halliday] is doing just fine.
In-laws
If there is any resistance to them letting her go to a Texas Tech football game, it is a clear indicator that they would make terrible in-laws, and you need to get out of that relationship as quickly as possible.
Lawyers
I got my law degree at Pepperdine. I think the legal profession is getting somewhat corrupted. When it comes to lawyers, I think itâs kind of a Catch-22. On one hand, thereâs so much process, procedure and mess caused by the legal profession. But on the other hand, the only way to sort through all that process, procedure, and mess is through the legal profession. Thatâs why I think lawyers are both very destructive and very necessary. Itâs like if you have guys coming after you with a sword, well, you better have a sword too.
Making memories
Our offensive line has to be tougher people ... That will be addressed tomorrow. It will be an experience they wonât forget. Theyâll be talking about it when theyâre my age.
Mascot battles
A cougar obviously kills a duck and a beaver.
A cougar against a husky, that's pretty well a massacre.
A cardinal or whatever: I don't know exactly what ... a cougar would either climb it, or I wouldn't want to think of what else he'd do on it.
Now golden bears could be kinda tough. I think you'd want to be a little fast and loose with them. You don't want to get caught by that bear.
The Ute ... you gotta dodge some arrowheads, but I still like the Cougar.
Buffalo ... I think the buffalo would be pretty tough to beat.
Wildcat: Cougars are bigger than wildcats.
Sun Devils, that's mythical anyway. Trojans, they may be as well.
The golden bear, bruin, and buffalo .. I think those are the tough ones.
You know, buffalo are significantly bigger than elk. I grew up near Yellowstone, so I've been near buffalo. Buffalo are huge. And then the other thing I've always gotten a kick out of: when you play Colorado, there's those buffalo dragging those six handlers around. Those handlers aren't dragging the buffalo. The buffalo's dragging him. Ralphie's not even a big buffalo.

Any questions?
The pirates thing
Leach has fully explained the massive pirates analogy that became Texas Techâs identity. From 2005:
Last year, after a loss to Texas A&M in overtime, Leach hauled the team into the conference room on Sunday morning and delivered a three-hour lecture on the history of pirates. The analogy to football held up for a few minutes, but after a bit, it was clear that Coach Leach was just . . . talking about pirates.
The quarterback Cody Hodges says of his coach: âYou learn not to ask questions. If you ask questions, it just goes on longer.â

Reporter: Do you see your football players walking around-
Leach: Well, Iâve seen them doing that for the last 10 years, but nobody talks to people anymore. I mean, thereâs people wonât even talk face to face. Theyâll go across the room and text each other. I think itâs actually kind of disturbing. I think the days before cell phones, when it was dirt clod wars at construction sites, was a lot more wholesome and productive, to be perfectly honest.

Pro wrestling
My dad always watched wrestling and I seldom did. The one that comes to mind is the Vachon Brothers when I was a child. The image most prominent in my mind is the Undertaker.
Raccoons
One night, [my pet raccoon, Bilbo Baggins] got particularly feisty, so my dad and I drove him out to woods. Once we found a good spot, we stopped and I put him on the ground and took his collar off. He kind of ambled about, taking in the new surroundings. I preface this next part by saying I do think humans and animals share an unspoken understanding, to some extent. Thatâs why itâs so easy to bond with pets. So this is how I remember saying goodbye to Bilbo: He wandered 10 yards away or so from the truck, and then he turned and looked at us and kind of had this expression like, It was nice knowing ya.
Referees
It's a little like breakfast; you eat ham and eggs.
As coaches and players, we're like the ham. You see, the chicken's involved, but the pig's committed. We're like the pig. [Officials] are like the chicken. They're involved, but everything we have rides on this.
James Snook-USA TODAY Sports
Running up the score while up 56-17
There was 23 seconds on the clock. That's more than enough time. I think we all had a level of disappointment we didn't score one more touchdown.
Running up the score while up 70-10
Football is the only sport where [youâre supposed to] quit playing when you get the lead. In golf, you keep trying to improve your score every hole. In basketball, you don't stop shooting when you're ahead. In boxing, you don't quit punching when you're ahead.
Satellite camps
For all our posturing and pompously parading around and pretending everything is about the student-athlete, we've just cut out a whole bunch of opportunities for them, and we've done it for no better reason than we're selfishly, jealously, trying to guard our recruiting areas. Or we're too lazy to work the camps.
Are they really that sensitive, would they really be that paranoid and petty and say, âOkay, we're mad at Jim Harbaugh, and we don't like him or his tone of voice, and now we're gunna screw over the student-athletes a ton of other schools would have the opportunity to see and recruit because Jim Harbaugh was mean to us, and we didn't like what he said, and he hurt our feelings?â And somebody down there went and chalked Jim Harbaugh's name on the side walk, and our feelings are hurt, and we live in fear, so please change the rule.
Sports movies
You canât really talk about great sports movies, though, without mentioning Talladega Nights, that Ricky Bobby one. That movie is off-the-charts funny â and after getting to know some NASCAR guys over the years, I realize that it isnât just a straight comedy. Itâs part documentary. I know people who do stuff like name one of their kids Walker and the other Texas Ranger. If you go to any elementary school classroom in Texas, some kids in there are going to be named either Austin, Dallas, or Houston. Thatâs basically the same thing. I wouldnât do that, or at least Iâd try to get more creative with it. Name your kid Amarillo or Carrizo Springs. You know what, Iâm going to move back to Texas, have another kid, and name him Fort Stockton.
System quarterbacks
If [2003 record-setter B.J. Symons] is a product of the system, then heâs not getting any of those touchdown passes and all those yards. That means our coaching staff is. That would also mean we could go down to 7-Eleven and get the clerk behind the counter and let him play quarterback.
Technology and the end of humanity
All this button-pushing and whatnot. I mean, you can just imagine, based on whatâs happened in the last 15 years. Conversations wonât happen, 10 years from now. There arenât going to be people to talk to. Itâs going to be like this [mimes typing on a phone]:
âDo you want to go out on a date with me?â
âI donât know. What do you look like?â
âWell, I kind of look like this.â
âOK, what are your interests?â
âWell, what do you think my interests are?â
âLooking into this thing and typing into this, just like yours are.â
âYeah, no kidding. Thatâs what everybodyâs doing.â
âWell, where do you want to go?â
âWell, what difference does it make? Because all weâre going to be doing is looking into machines anyways.â
Well, thatâs true, and in the end, itâs going to be tough to perpetuate the species.
Texas A&M cadets
How come they get to pretend they are soldiers? The thing is, they aren't actually in the military. I ought to have Mike's Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is the bandana. When you're a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, we'll work pirate maneuvers and stuff like that.

Texas A&M fans
A&M wants to rip on our fans and all that. Our fans are as good as their fans are. One thing our fans don't do is sit around and whine about other teams' fans. Why don't they worry about what themselves are like?
It's interesting to me that all these Aggies â whether they're at A&M or here â are sitting around with halos over their heads, and they have some divine expertise on fanmanship. I just don't believe that's the case. For the record, I think our fans are better than the Aggie fans.

Weddings
The women lose their mind. Your fianceeâs gonna lose her mind, your mother-in-law is gonna lose her mind, your mom is gonna lose her mind, several of your sisters and female relatives are gonna lose their mind. And, theyâre gonna barrage you with constant questions â âwhat should we wear?â and of course my answer was âI donât care.â And then âwhat color should the invitations be?â â I donât care.â âWhat should we have for dessert?â âI donât care.â âShould we sit this way, or that way?â âI donât care.â But see, I donât careâs not satisfactory at all, and youâre going to get caught in a catch-22 â and Iâm certain that you already have â and that catch-22 is, âWell I want you to be a part of this too, so what color invitations?â âAlright, the blue ones.â âWell I kind of like the tan onesâ â âOK the tan ones then.â âOh youâre jut saying that bc you want this over, youâre not even thinking about itâ â which is, of course true. âWhat do you want for dessert?â âI was thinking strawberry shortcake.â âOh, OK, strawberry shortcake would be good. Well, what about the blueberry pie?â âWell I like the blueberry pie, we could have the blueberry pieâ â âWell I thought you wanted to have the strawberry shortcake?!ââ
And itâs just gonna go back and forth, and theyâre just going to play keep-away from you until after youâre married. Thereâs no answer that you give thatâs going to be satisfactory or correct. And if you successfully please a few of them, a few others will be âOh, well I just donât feel like heâs that interested.â So you need to work late, go in the back room and read a lot of books, take the groomsmen out so you make sure that they march in just right, and they know exactly, you know these swell outfits that you picked out, or however youâre doing it. And in the end, youâll wish you eloped.

That's not pleasant to say or pleasant to think about, but that's a fact.

Sapiens and Collective Fictions
Recently I read Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Harari. The basic thesis of the book is that humans require âcollective fictionsâ so that we can collaborate in larger numbers than the 150 or so our brains are big enough to cope with by default. Collective fictions are things that donât describe solid objects in the real world we can see and touch. Things like religions, nationalism, liberal democracy, or Popperian falsifiability in science. Things that donât exist, but when we act like they do, we easily forget that they donât.
Collective Fictions in IT â Waterfall
This got me thinking about some of the things that bother me today about the world of software engineering. When I started in software 20 years ago, God was waterfall. I joined a consultancy (ca. 400 people) that wrote very long specs which were honed to within an inch of their life, down to the individual Java classes and attributes. These specs were submitted to the customer (God knows what they made of it), who signed it off. This was then built, delivered, and monies were received soon after. Life was simpler then and everyone was happy.
Except there were gaps in the story â customers complained that the spec didnât match the delivery, and often the product delivered would not match the spec, as âthingsâ changed while the project went on. In other words, the waterfall process was a âcollective fictionâ that gave us enough stability and coherence to collaborate, get something out of the door, and get paid.
This consultancy went out of business soon after I joined. No conclusions can be drawn from this.
Collective Fictions in IT â Startups ca. 2000
I got a job at another software development company that had a niche with lots of work in the pipe. I was employee #39. There was no waterfall. In fact, there was nothing in the way of methodology I could see at all. Specs were agreed with a phone call. Design, prototype and build were indistinguishable. In fact it felt like total chaos; it was against all of the precepts of my training. There was more work than we could handle, and we got on with it.
The fact was, we were small enough not to need a collective fiction we had to name. Relationships and facts could be kept in our heads, and if you needed help, you literally called out to the room. The tone was like this, basically:
Of course there were collective fictions, we just didnât name them:
We will never have a mission statement
We donât need HR or corporate communications, we have the pub (tough luck if you have a family)
We only hire the best
We got slightly bigger, and customers started asking us what our software methodology was. We guessed it wasnât acceptable to say âwe just write the codeâ (legend had it our C-based application server â still in use and blazingly fast â was written before my time in a fit of pique with a stash of amphetamines over a weekend. Itâs still in use.)
Turns out there was this thing called âRapid Application Developmentâ that emphasized prototyping. We told customers we did RAD, and they seemed happy, as it was A Thing. It sounded to me like âhackingâ, but to be honest Iâm not sure anyone among us really properly understood it or read up on it.
As a collective fiction it worked, because it kept customers off our backs while we wrote the software.
Soon we doubled in size, moved out of our cramped little office into a much bigger one with bigger desks, and multiple floors. You couldnât shout out your question to the room anymore. Teams got bigger, and these things called âproject managersâ started appearing everywhere talking about âspecsâ and ârequirements gatheringâ. We tried and failed to rewrite our entire platform from scratch.
Yes, we were back to waterfall again, but this time the working cycles were faster and smaller, and the same problems of changing requirements and disputes with customers as before. So was it waterfall? We didnât really know.
Collective Fictions in IT â Agile
I started hearing the word âAgileâ about 2003. Again, I donât think I properly read up on it⊠ever, actually. I got snippets here and there from various websites I visited and occasionally from customers or evangelists that talked about it. When I quizzed people who claimed to know about it their explanations almost invariably lost coherence quickly. The few that really had read up on it seemed incapable of actually dealing with the very real pressures we faced when delivering software to non-sprint-friendly customers, timescales, and blockers. So we carried on delivering software with our specs, and some sprinkling of agile terminology. Meetings were called âscrumsâ now, but otherwise it felt very similar to what went on before.
As a collective fiction it worked, because it kept customers and project managers off our backs while we wrote the software.
Since then Iâve worked in a company that grew to 700 people, and now work in a corporation of 100K+ employees, but the pattern is essentially the same: which incantation of the liturgy will satisfy this congregation before me?
Donât You Believe?
Iâm not going to beat up on any of these paradigms, because whatâs the point? If software methodologies didnât exist weâd have to invent them, because how else would we work together effectively? You need these fictions in order to function at scale. Itâs no coincidence that the Agile paradigm has such a quasi-religious hold over a workforce that is immensely fluid and mobile. (If you want to know what I really think about software development methodologies, read this because it lays it out much better than I ever could.)
One of many interesting arguments in Sapiens is that because these collective fictions canât adequately explain the world, and often conflict with each other, the interesting parts of a culture are those where these tensions are felt. Often, humour derives from these tensions.
âThe test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.â F. Scott Fitzgerald
I donât know about you, but I often feel this tension when discussion of Agile goes beyond a small team. When Iâm told in a motivational poster written by someone Iâve never met and who knows nothing about my job that I should âobliterate my blockersâ, and those blockers are both external and non-negotiable, what else can I do but laugh at it?
How can you be agile when there are blockers outside your control at every turn? Infrastructure, audit, security, financial planning, financial structures all militate against the ability to quickly deliver meaningful iterations of products. And who is the customer here, anyway? Weâre talking about the square of despair:
When I see diagrams like this representing Agile I can only respond with black humour shared with my colleagues, like kids giggling at the back of a church.
When within a smaller and well-functioning functioning team, the totems of Agile often fly out of the window and what youâre left with (when itâs good) is a team that trusts each other, is open about its trials, and has a clear structure (formal or informal) in which agreement and solutions can be found and co-operation is productive. Google recently articulated this (reported briefly here, and more in-depth here).
So Why Not Tell It Like It Is?
You might think the answer is to come up with a new methodology thatâs better. Itâs not like we havenât tried:
Itâs just not that easy, like the book says:
âTelling effective stories is not easy. The difficulty lies not in telling the story, but in convincing everyone else to believe it. Much of history revolves around this question: how does one convince millions of people to believe particular stories about gods, or nations, or limited liability companies? Yet when it succeeds, it gives Sapiens immense power, because it enables millions of strangers to cooperate and work towards common goals. Just try to imagine how difficult it would have been to create states, or churches, or legal systems if we could speak only about things that really exist, such as rivers, trees and lions.â
Letâs rephrase that:
âComing up with useful software methodologies is not easy. The difficulty lies not in defining them, but in convincing others to follow it. Much of the history of software development revolves around this question: how does one convince engineers to believe particular stories about the effectiveness of requirements gathering, story points, burndown charts or backlog grooming? Yet when adopted, it gives organisations immense power, because it enables distributed teams to cooperate and work towards delivery. Just try to images how difficult it would have been to create Microsoft, Google, or IBM if we could only speak about specific technical challenges.â
Anyway, does the world need more methodologies? Itâs not like some very smart people havenât already thought about this.
Acceptance
So Iâm cool with it. Lean, Agile, Waterfall, whatever, the fact is we need some kind of common ideology to co-operate in large numbers. None of them are evil, so itâs not like youâre picking racism over socialism or something. Whichever one you pick is not going to reflect the reality, but if you expect perfection you will be disappointed. And watch yourself for unspoken or unarticulated collective fictions. Your life is full of them. Like that your opinion is important. I canât resist quoting this passage from Sapiens about our relationship with wheat:
âThe body of Homo sapiens had not evolved for [farming wheat]. It was adapted to climbing apple trees and running after gazelles, not to clearing rocks and carrying water buckets. Human spines, knees, necks and arches paid the price. Studies of ancient skeletons indicate that the transition to agriculture brought about a plethora of ailments, such as slipped discs, arthritis and hernias. Moreover, the new agricultural tasks demanded so much time that people were forced to settle permanently next to their wheat fields. This completely changed their way of life. We did not domesticate wheat. It domesticated us. The word âdomesticateâ comes from the Latin domus, which means âhouseâ. Whoâs the one living in a house? Not the wheat. Itâs the Sapiens.â
Maybe weâre not here to direct the code, but the code is directing us. Whoâs the one compromising reason and logic to grow code? Not the code. Itâs the Sapiens.
