The Women and Men Who Marched on Washington, In Their Own Words

While the aerial photos from yesterday’s Women’s March on Washington show the half-a-million attendees filling streets and spilling out onto the lawns of the capital—a teeming blanket of pink and black, on the ground, with barely any cell service and sign-wielding marchers sandwiching you in from all sides—it was close to impossible to conceive just how far the crowd really went. What was clear, however, was the diversity of the people on the ground: families with three generations of women who had trekked from across the country, longtime activists rallying beside first-timers, mothers and fathers holding photos of their young daughters, and trans women banding together to demand a voice.
MORE: What Women (and Men) Wore to the March on Washington
The myriad faces in the pack were matched by innumerable reasons to take a stand, from the hyper-personal to the political (though at times like this, the two seem to be one and the same).
Read on for why 14 marchers decided to join the movement in Washington this weekend:

Sally
Ann Arbor, Michigan
“I have three daughters that deserve to grow up with the same reproductive freedoms that I had. Two of my daughters are gay, and one of them is going out with an African-American Muslim woman, and she’s frightened, and that breaks my heart. This is not the America we should be living in.”
Can you tell me about your jacket and signs?
“These ribbons are the voices of the women who couldn’t attend—friends, coworkers, family members, Facebook friends. I offered to take their voices to Washington, so I’ve taken down what they wanted to say and posted them on my sleeve so they feel represented. There are so many issues that Donald Trump is attacking. I don’t really feel that he’s a legitimate president, and I don’t think he represents myself or the American people. We all spoke and we elected Hillary. And the back sign is about democracy—I really feel that our democracy is under attack, and we have to stand up like this and do something about it now.”

Deanna Dewey, Leah Taylor, Nikola Bergos, Elizabeth Dunbar, and Courtney Nichols
Brooklyn, New York, Connecticut, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles
Courtney: “I bought a ticket the night of the election—I had a call to arms, in a way. I’m very active in the revolution [laughs]. I did a lot when it came to the Dakota Access Pipeline, and then Black Lives Matter, and reproductive rights. I’m hoping to get a sense of solidarity out of today. I plan on crying nonstop and feeling the witchy womanhood that is us. I hope these protests continue for the next four years.”
Elizabeth: “I wasn’t going to come to the march originally, but these two were like, ‘We’re coming to town and we want to go!’ And I thought about it, and I wasn’t going to go originally because I didn’t think it would make any difference, wouldn’t change anything, wouldn’t change the outcome. But really I think it’s about more than that—we get to see all the people who believe in the same things that we believe and will fight together to keep the things that we have and get the things that we want. It’s been tough on women and minorities and LGBT communities and everyone that isn’t in the majority, but it has ended up with more support for causes like Planned Parenthood and causes that we all care about, but don’t necessarily put our money where our mouth is, so hopefully we can keep the momentum going.”
Aleesha Woodson/STYLECASTER
Ingrid
Kansas City
“I didn’t really decide to come to the parade until today. I am glad that everybody’s here, but also feel like there could be more representation for people other than white women. It’s very, like, Hillary Clinton feminism. I just hoped that people could branch out a little bit. I came here with that in mind and I’ve seen a lot of that, but a lot of the speakers were women of color, or trans women of color, so it’s a lot better than I thought.”
Aleesha Woodson/STYLECASTER
Erin Morris and Nicole Bennett
Brooklyn, New York
Erin: “We are here today to make some noise—but also spread some positivity with our heart sign. For me it’s definitely about reproductive rights, and also fighting against that nonsense that’s up there [gestures at group of counter-protestors with anti-Black Lives Matter and anti-gay signs].”
Nicole: “I’m here to fight for women’s reproductive rights. We decided to come a couple months ago. We came with her whole yoga studio—she’s training to be a yoga teacher—so the studio was like, ‘Let’s go and spread the love and be happy.’”
Aleesha Woodson/STYLECASTER
Melissa (left) and Amanda
Bridgewater, New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York
Amanda: “I feel like there’s been an attack on every segment of society, and before it was covert and now it’s blatantly obvious, and we need to stand up and fight back. I’m reading this book called “Dark Money,” which I suggest to everyone, about how there’s been a lot of funding of groups, a lot of changing society from what it was, of making “progressive” into a dirty word, and now it’s very clear that they are taking our rights away from us—healthcare, equal pay, rights for minorities. And it’s all out in the open. There’s a sign over there that calls Black Lives Matter protesters “rioters” and “thugs,” which everyone knows is a code word. It’s just unacceptable.
Melissa: “I completely agree with my daughter. I’ve never protested ever, so this is a first for me, but I just thought it was important to come out and really alert folks to what’s going on, and that we can do something about it if we stand together. People really need to wake up, and I think just by the crowds here, it says a lot of people are starting to take notice.”
So what are the next steps?
Amanda: “I’m a lawyer, so I’m organizing. I think getting involved locally is the biggest thing. They can’t run away from us—we’re their citizens.”
Aleesha Woodson/STYLECASTER
Tim Jackson
Memphis, Tennessee
“I’m here because I’d like to believe that I fought for something more. I was in an Iraq campaigns in 2006-2007, and if I was willing to go over there when I was younger, I’d like to believe in what I was fighting for, and I can’t get behind the direction the country is going in right now. I came with my fiancée, Ashley—we took the train and drove—and I also wanted to come to break the stigma about vets that we’re very conservative. I don’t want to blanket people, but there’s a stigma, and I want to show that there are those of us that believe in equal rights for everybody, simply put.”
Aleesha Woodson/STYLECASTER
Anne and Judy
Boston, Massachusetts
Judy: “We’re here to bring attention to the very poor president that we elected and to oppose him.”
Anne: “We’re very outraged. Planned Parenthood was there for me when I was young, and I’m here for Planned Parenthood. We’re here for equal rights: we don’t believe that lesbian, gay, and transgender people are a special interest group or that Black Lives Matter is a special interest group. They’re American citizens, same as everybody.”
Have you been to many marches and rallies like this in the past?
Judy: “Oh yes. We got married on the steps of the IRS with about 5,000 other gay couples—actually, we’ve gotten married three or four times, but that was one of them.”
Anne: “We go back to Civil Rights and we go back to Vietnam. This is fabulous. It’s great that people are marching at this time, right after the inauguration. It just shows right away that there are a lot of people out there that don’t support his policies. We decided to come way before the election, but I just didn’t think this would happen—it was really heartbreaking. I really thought in my lifetime I’d see a woman president, and Hillary was by far the most qualified.”
Aleesha Woodson/STYLECASTER
Stewart and Quinn
Flemington, New Jersey and Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Stewart: “I think a really big thing is that this is trying to be intersectional, trying to include racial justice and economic justice, and just looking though the crowd, color was necessary to be here. I’ve been doing activist work for a few years now, but this is my first time doing it in Washington.”
Quinn: “I guess I’m here because I’m queer? [laughs] And obviously this administration has very little support for many people of America, including myself. I first marched on Washington for the Iraq War, and I’m hoping that this leads to more activism, not just in the next four years, but just a movement of people being more active in their government and how things are run in our country.”
Aleesha Woodson/STYLECASTER
Tyler Orr
Maryland
“I’m here to protest women’s rights—I decided to come last week with my friends from high school. I’m standing here [in front of anti-LGBT and anti-Black Lives Matter signs] because of these bigots behind me. I wanted to cover all that up. This is my first protest, but definitely not my last.”

Jaclyn Hill Just Revealed Her New Launch — & It's Sending Makeup Fans Into A Tizzy

#MorpheXJaclynHill ❤️ I have worked hand in hand with @linda_morphe perfecting my dream palette for my loving subscribers. Linda gave me complete control & I was SO picky with the pigmentation, application & blend-ability. Our goal was to create something high quality with an affordable price. After two years we feel we mastered it. Coming in March❤️
A photo posted by J A C L Y N (@jaclynhill) on Jan 20, 2017 at 1:14pm PST
Update: If beauty vlogger Jaclyn Hill’s posts these last few weeks have left you on the edge of your seat, there are two things you should know. First, we wouldn’t blame you (in fact, we’re right there with you). And secondly, Hill finally announced the news we’ve all been waiting for: She is teaming up with Morphe Brushes to release her Jaclyn Hill Palette. Though not much was revealed in her Instagram reveal, we do know the palette will feature 35 brand-new shadow shades, and will be out in March. Here’s hoping we’ll see even more sneak peeks in our future.
Update (January 11, 2017): As if the news circulating the internet right now hasn’t already sent you through an emotional roller coaster, beauty vlogger Jaclyn Hill just gave us another. Late last night, the YouTuber confirmed on Twitter that her upcoming beauty launch — a tease that threw makeup fans everywhere for a loop earlier this month — isn’t actually her own makeup line, as we originally suspected. (At least not yet.)
But don’t be too sad about the news. She also let a hint slip about the product itself — it’ll be an eyeshadow palette collab with another brand. And while she didn’t drop any more info, we’re willing to wager it’s enough to keep the beauty world buzzing for the next few days.
To everyone asking… My eyeshadow palette is a COLLAB that will be launching in 7 weeks. It is not my own makeup line. Not quite yet!
— Jaclyn Hill (@Jaclynhill) January 11, 2017
This story was originally posted on December 30, 2016.
Jaclyn Hill, one of YouTube’s OG beauty vloggers, has had one hell of a year. First, she teamed up with Becca Cosmetics to launch a limited-edition Champagne Pop highlighter. The product sold so fast (it actually broke a Sephora record for most purchased on its release day) that she quickly introduced another, warmer iteration called Prosseco Pop — which also flew off the virtual shelves.
But if you thought 2016 would be the year Hill reached her peak, we’ve got news — kind of. The YouTube star took to Twitter late last night to drop a hint about her next beauty collab, which she claims has been two years in the making.
Are you guys ready for my next collab??!! Im going to start giving hints in 2 weeks! Been working on this one for 2 years!! biggest yet!
— Jaclyn Hill (@Jaclynhill) December 30, 2016
Hill added that she’d be hinting at the lucky partner in the next two weeks. Given her massive online following, you might be able to guess what people did next: They lost their collective shit. Dozens of fans replied to the tweet with words — and GIFs — of affirmation.

Some even guessed that the news might include her very own cosmetics line, which she first mentioned that she was working on two years ago. Whatever it is, there’s one thing we know for sure: The best things in life are worth the wait.

What I Learned From Female Trump Supporters on Inauguration Day
SAVE ON WEDDING & PROM DRESSES at http://ift.tt/23SccX9 Where Smart Shoppers Shop!
Yesterday, Obama said goodbye to the White House after 2,921 days as president, and Donald Trump started the first day of his 1,460-day term. For millions of Americans, this Inauguration Day is an occasion of mourning, one that will be protested peacefully by hundreds of thousands participating in tomorrow’s Women’s March on Washington. For millions of others, today is a huge victory, a transfer of power to conservatives who will run the government—and the country—for the next four years.
As a liberal, a march participant, and (like Meryl Streep) a proud “Hillary lover,” for me, this weekend represents much more fear than excitement. The only thing harder than watching our first female presidential candidate concede the election is watching our first black president leave the oval. Still, if there’s anything I’ve learned in the last few months, it’s that we could all do a better job listening and talking to one another—especially those whose opinions don’t just differ from, but completely clash with, our own.
MORE: How Your Birth Control Rights Will Change With Trump

I’ve been lucky to have candid, respectful conversations with women whose perspectives are worlds apart from my own about why they voted for Trump and how they campaigned to make it happen (props, ladies—your activism clearly made a difference). I spoke with an old friend who chose not to vote at all, who said, “Look, I think they were both flawed candidates, and a president’s job is about more than just social matters and civil rights—he also needs to address bottom-line issues like the national debt.” I bit my tongue when a former college roommate casually said, at happy hour a few days after the election: “Did I vote for Hillary? Yes. Do I think Trump’s win is the end of the world? No.”
Did I vote for Hillary? Yes. Do I think Trump’s the end of the world? No.
These words, as hard as they are for me and many others to stomach, are valid. Why? Because they’re the opinions of our fellow humans, citizens, and voters. The Electoral College might be an archaic institution that effectively nullifies the premise that every vote has the same value, but it’s a fundamentally American concept that every vote matters. On November 8, a minority of 62,979,879 Americans were empowered to put Trump in office, leaving 65,844,954 of the rest of us wondering how the hell this happened, and WTF is next. Pundits, journalists, historians, sociologists, and political experts will spend the next four years trying to figure that out, but right now, this is our reality.
MORE: 9 Times Donald Trump’s Hair Has Tried to Run Away

To start coming to terms with that reality, to learn to live with it without condoning it, and, most importantly, to use it as a springboard for passionate, positive change—the kind we might have taken for granted had there been a President Hillary Clinton—I went back to the women who had generously explained their points of view to me before the election. I wanted to understand: Were they as elated about Trump now, post-win, as they were before? Did they have any concerns whatsoever—if not for themselves, as women, but for their fellow Americans who’d felt victimized and marginalized by Trump’s treatment of minorities?
I did question some of Trump’s cabinet nominee choices.
“I was relieved and proud after Trump’s win, because our election process worked and protected our democracy,” says Ashley, 32, a Trump voter and stay-at-home mom from Massachusetts. “The results have naturally drawn some very passionate responses, and I wouldn’t have expected less. But my feelings about Trump remain the same: I knew he wouldn’t change minds overnight, nor did I think he would suddenly change his approach—not that a little filtering would be a bad thing—but I think his actions will speak for themselves, and I look forward to that.” As for his actions during the three-month transition, Ashley says that while she’s not “deeply concerned,” she raised an eyebrow at a few.
Obama delivering his Farewell Address in Chicago, January 10, 2017. Getty Images
“I did stop and question some of Trump’s choices for cabinet nominees,” she says. “I would have liked to see some nominees who were a little less controversial for the sake of unifying the country. That said, I have faith that Trump has a plan and that’s why I voted for him. Of course I feel there are things he could have handled a little better during the transition, but at the same time, I’m not sure it would have made a difference. People are angry and some are in complete disbelief that he is the new president. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and a chance to put his plan in place before critiquing too much.”
I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Other Trump supporters don’t have even a shred of doubt about his presidential competence. “I feel more enthusiastic than ever and I think he handled the transition beautifully,” says Sarah, 20, of New Jersey, who says she was cyber-bullied for supporting Trump. “Nothing he has ever done will make me feel concerned about how he’ll handle certain issues. I knew who I voted for when I went to the polls, and am excited to see real change and action take place. I think it will be quite a transition going from Trump Tower to the White House, but I’m confident in his intellect, intuition, and the team he has put together.”
Donald and Melania Trump travel to Washington for the Inauguration, January 19, 2017. Getty Images
Neither woman harbors fears for her reproductive rights, either. “Not many voters watched the Republican primary debates, but Trump was the one nominee who made it clear how important women’s healthcare is,” says Sarah. “As a young lady, I’ll never forget that moment. He even mentioned how he’d advocate for birth control without prescriptions! I realize that people are worried that defunding Planned Parenthood will hurt women, but that organization is making revenue, according to their annual reports, so federal defunding won’t necessarily mean the end of Planned Parenthood.”
We all need to try to have faith.
Shortly after Trump’s win, Obama said—in an effort to unify a gaping, angry divide—that Americans need to give Trump a chance, like it or not. Ashley echoed that message. “We need to give Trump the opportunity to follow through on his plans before judging his intentions,” she says. “We all need to try to have faith.” That’s something too many of us are feeling understandably low on. I asked Sarah what she’d say to those feeling targeted or marginalized by the new president. “I would say to anyone who feels Trump isn’t interested in their civil rights that they’re wrong,” she says. “He has reached out to minority communities more than any other Republican candidate. His supporters were of many backgrounds and ethnicities because his ideas will help them. There’s not a doubt in my mind that he’s looking out for all of us as Americans.” Let’s hope, for our country’s sake, that she’s not wrong.

9 Crazy Breakup Stories That Will Make Yours Seem Normal AF
SAVE ON WEDDING & PROM DRESSES at http://ift.tt/23SccX9 Where Smart Shoppers Shop!
Breakups are the WORST. I mean absolute, kick-you-in-the crotch, spit-in-your-face worst. Most of us have experienced the pain and heartbreak of being dumped, but what about when you’re the one making the break? It’s general knowledge that it takes two to be in a relationship, but the truth is it only takes one person to break up, and that shit ain’t fun—hence why so many people choose to ghost, instead (never cool, BTW).
For those of you with New Year’s resolutions of singledom, read on for real women’s survivor stories. Being the breaker-upper may not always be pretty, but it’s usually worth it.
I tried to slap him but ended up punching him.
Punch Line
“I casually dated this guy for about eight months, during which I made it clear that we were NOT a serious couple. For one thing, I was seeing other people, and for another, we were absolutely wrong for each other. It was the kind of relationship with great sex and horrible everything else. Every time I tried to end it, we’d end up in bed together again, and again, and again. I finally succeeded on the night of my best friend’s birthday. I hadn’t spoken to my non-boyfriend in about 24 hours, and I think we both knew that the end was near. I was at a birthday party with my girlfriends and he showed up, uninvited, with his friends.
He proceeded to make out with any and every girl in my eye line—no joke, I’d turn my head and he’d walk into my sight and find a new girl to make out with. After the fifth shot, I decided to confront him and end us for good. He started shouting at me about how I couldn’t break up with him because we were nothing, and I was nothing. I tried to slap him but drunkenly missed, and ended up punching him. Not my classiest moment, and the only time I’ve ever hit a man, but the knuckle bruises were worth it.” – Sarah, 27, Manhattan
Not-so-Happy Birthday
“I’d been seeing an OKCupid guy for three months, but wasn’t feeling it. I hated the way he smelled, and wasn’t really attracted to him. The day after my birthday I was at home with a broken foot, and he came over to watch TV with me. I could tell he was about to lunge onto me so I blurted out, ‘Listen, we need to talk, I just don’t think I can be romantically involved with you anymore.’ He sat there and looked at me for a few minutes and then said, ‘OK, yeah, sure, I was thinking the same,’ and stayed for an hour awkwardly watching trashy TV while I wished he would go away. Never heard from him again.” –Kate, 26, London
I broke his heart and then made him drive me to the airport.
The Saddest Ride
“The worst break up I had was with my boyfriend of five years. It was so serious at that point, that marriage, kids, and future cities had all been laid out before us. Even though I had a nagging feeling it wasn’t right between us, he had been my best friend for so long, it was a long time before I could articulate that I needed to get out. When I did, he was completely caught off guard and confessed he had been wedding ring shopping only days before. The whole conversation was completely heartbreaking, and to top it all off, it was a day before I was set to leave town for awhile to visit family. I broke his heart and then I made him drive me to the airport. Even though he offered, I still wish I had paid for a cab.” –Margery, 30, Boston
Blackout Breakup
“I dated Eoin for four years, and it took several tries before breaking up with him stuck. Finally, one Halloween towards the end, I got completely trashed. The booze gave me the courage to FINALLY lay into him about everything I was pissed about—supporting him financially and catering to his every emotionally need—and unequivocally end things. However, this was news to me the next day, as my ex came by to tell me how pissed he was. My response? ‘I don’t remember doing it, but I still stand by it.’ Thanks, blackout me.” –Semele, 28, Manhattan

A Little Too Thirsty
“I broke it off with my ex of a few months, which involved me having to explicitly tell him I didn’t like him and didn’t want to see him anymore. After this awkward word vomit, he tried to kiss me in front of the train. Terrible. I even went so far as to tell him I was sleeping with someone else for a couple of months and hated having sex with him. He still didn’t get it and kept trying to date me, literally, for years.” –Mags, 26, London
Middle School Fail
“The first breakup I ever initiated was with a boy in eighth grade. He called my house, asked if I wanted to go to the movies, and I politely said ‘thanks, but no thanks,’ in the nicest way I knew how—sorry, but he was shorter than me, which was a feat considering I barely grazed 5′ back then. He then proceeded to make fun of me—in a mean, bully-ish way, not a cute, teasing way—for the remainder of middle and high school. Glad that life phase is over.” –Hailey, 30, Brooklyn
I pretended to be sick to my stomach so I didn’t have to have sex.
A Real Pickle
“My boyfriend and I were both back in our hometown for winter break—we’d been long distance in college—and I was at his family’s house. I wanted to break it off because I hadn’t been into it for awhile, but was too chicken to do it around his family, so I pretended to be sick to my stomach so I didn’t have to have sex with him. I even skipped the dinner his family made. I was so hungry later that night, I remember eating like 10 pickles, saying the salt made my stomach feel a little better! He believed me, of course, being the nice guy he was, and I eventually gathered the courage to end it a few days later. Why I just didn’t leave that night with my ‘stomachache’ and eat a real dinner I’ll never know.” –Sheri, 29, San Diego
I replied to his text with one word: Unsubscribe.
A for Effort
“I was dating this guy for around four months and everything was going great. Then, out of nowhere, he ghosted. No word, no explanation. About six weeks later, he tried wooing me back. Texts, calls, even flowers. I let it go on for awhile, about a week, saying just enough to keep the groveling going until I got bored one night and replied to a particularly long text message proclamation from him with a single word: ‘Unsubscribe.’ I never replied again, and he got the hint.” –Bethany, 31, Manhattan
Double Dump
“I broke up with my ex on St. Patrick’s day after months of a sexless, fight-filled relationship. This was a holiday he considered sacred—he was a borderline alcoholic with Irish heritage who loved a good publicly sanctioned reason to drink. He ended up out drinking on his own because I had to work the next day. When he came home in the early hours of the morning, he decided to show his disappointment by slamming glasses and pots around in our kitchen and loudly exclaiming, “I can’t BELIEVE you didn’t go out with me! This is like ignoring my birthday!” Side note: earlier in the year he ACTUALLY forgot my birthday, so my past rage was enough to haul me out of bed to tell him it was over.
After we talked it out for an hour, I ended our relationship on social media and went to bed. I woke up to a text from his best friend: ‘I can’t believe you broke up with him via social media.’ Turns out my ex hadn’t remembered our breakup. I had to break up with him all over again. Turns out, it wasn’t easier a second time.” –Anastasia, 29 Brooklyn

Lauren Jauregui Slays Onstage Sans Fifth Harmony

Fifth Harmony had a pretty rough final few weeks of 2016. Lauren Jauregui was found to be in possession of marijuana by airport security three weeks ago. (No charges were pressed.) Then Camila Cabello abruptly quit the group, prompting an ugly exchange of strongly-worded letters between Cabello and the remaining members of 5H.
But things are looking up for the women already — Lauren Jauregui in particular. Last weekend, Jauregui performed “Back To Me,” her collaboration with Marian Hill, for the first time ever.
Jauregui joined the American songwriting duo during their set at the SnowGlobe Festival in Lake Tahoe on Friday. The performance and its reception were delightfully drama-free. Proud fans captured footage and shared it on Twitter, praising Jauregui’s performance of her first major solo project. And the singer herself tweeted, “It’s so cool to sing your own words and watch people in the crowd fuck with it..truly the most incredible experience #thankyou.”
It’s great to see Jauregui is happily pursuing her solo career while remaining a part of the British group. (For now, at least.)

Did Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas Just Become Instagram-Official?

Look alive, folks. It might be time to think up a couple nickname for Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas. SoJo? Starknas?
Things appear to be heating up between the Game of Thrones actress and DNCE frontman, and we mean that both metaphorically and literally. What could be hotter than a date down in Miami?
Turner’s Instagram now features a snapshot of her new beau smoking a stogie on a boat in Miami. Who does he think he is, Pitbull?

Jonas commented on the pic, which seems to raise the couple’s status to Instagram-official, with a winky-face emoji. He’s a man of few words, that one.
In all honesty, though, we’re super-jealous. Winter is coming, and these two are living it up in the MIA. Smart thinking, lovebirds.

Ellen's Fans Are Protesting Against An Iconic Guest After Her Homophobic Rant
SAVE ON WEDDING & PROM DRESSES at http://ift.tt/23SccX9 Where Smart Shoppers Shop!
Ellen DeGeneres is a dealer of good vibes. She makes guests like Rihanna and Harry Styles comfortable enough to discuss their sex lives and even got Barack Obama to awkwardly do that signature dad-dance when he first took office. The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a happy place that celebs of all sorts like to visit.
Which is why many fans are protesting against the legendary gospel singer Kim Burrell’s scheduled appearance on Thursday.
According to Vulture, Burrell went on a homophobic rant while preaching at her Houston-based congregation last week, saying:
“You as a man, you open your mouth and take a man’s penis in your face, you are perverted. You are a woman and will shake your face in another woman’s breast, you are perverted.”
Burrell is scheduled to perform the song “I See Victory” with Pharrell Williams and Janelle Monáe, which is the lead track for the recently released film Hidden Figures.
In an attempt to quell the backlash, the singer then released an half-hearted apology, but fans were not having it. A Change.org petition against her appearance on Ellen was started and has already locked in a few thousand signatures in a short period of time.
“I never said LGBT…I said S-I-N,” Burrell said in her apology.
“To every person that is dealing with the homosexual spirit, that has it, I love you because God loves you,” she said. “But God hates the sin in you and me, anything that is against the nature of God. I’m called to do what God called me to do, and that’s it, and I do it with passion,” she said according to Entertainment Weekly.
Yeah Kim, you can do better next time.
Williams tweeted what was clearly a message about that controversy after it emerged, despite not directly mentioning the show or Burrell.

Monáe also addressed the comments using the above tweet and her own, personal message.
In part, she wrote, “We cannot sit Idly by nor will we speak silently when we are confronted with such violence against members of our community. I am personally beyond exhausted by the ignorance and bigotry living in some people. At times I want to punch and I want to slap a lot of people when I read and hear the shit that comes out their mouthes !!! I will rejoice when folks stop thinking they ARE GOD, Jesus’ assistant, picking and choosing what “sins” are acceptable in the Bible, and using the Bible as a whip!”
I shouldn’t even have to post this as you guys should already know where I stand but If you do not pls know I unequivocally repudiate ANY AND ALL hateful comments against the LGBTQ community. Actually I’m tired of that label. We all belong to the same community, a shared community called humanity. And today and tomorrow and the next day I will continue to stand with other like minded people who condemn any and all statements and actions that would seek to deny the basic humanity of our fellow brothers and sisters. We cannot sit Idly by nor will we speak silently when we are confronted with such violence against members of our community. I am personally beyond exhausted by the ignorance and bigotry living in some people. At times I want to punch and I want to slap a lot of people when I read and hear the shit that comes out their mouthes !!! I will rejoice when folks stop thinking they ARE GOD, Jesus’ assistant, picking and choosing what “sins” are acceptable in the Bible, and using the Bible as a whip! WE can’t afford anymore tearing down of our shared humanity. My advice: If your religion is causing you to spew out words of hate, judge, or look down on others because of who one loves then you need to change it. And fast. If the religion don’t make you are more loving or better person, ditch it. But what do I know. My hope is that we ALL go into this new year considering for one moment that we don’t have all the answers. My hope is that we become more understanding, less judgmental, more tolerate, and more patient with one another. Including me. HAPPY NEW YEAR. ❤

Sherlock Is Back — & Breaking Our Hearts

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers about the season 4 premiere of Sherlock. Read at your own risk.
Take heart, Cumber-whatever-you-want-to-call-yourselves. Benedict Cumberbatch is back as Sherlock Holmes, and unlike last year’s letdown of Christmas special, he’s not wasted on some Victorian-era flashback that turned out to all just be a dream. Nope, tonight’s season 4 premiere was firmly rooted in the present-day and was (sob) all too real.
Mary Watson (Amanda Abbington) is dead. Not Sherlock Holmes dead or Irene Adler dead or even Moriarty dead (because at this point we’re not sure what’s going on with that guy). Like, actually dead. (This may be convenient for Abbington and co-star Martin “John Watson” Freeman given their just-announced breakup, but it’s pretty upsetting for Holmes heads.)
Watson’s missus had quite an episode. The beginning of “The Six Thatchers” saw the former secret agent giving birth to the couple’s daughter, Rosamund Mary (remember that name). Before long, however, she’d turned up as a person of interest in Sherlock’s latest case, which ultimately led to her fatal shooting.
Some backstory: Sherlock, conveniently exonerated for killing Charles Augustus Magnussen (Lars Mikkelsen) so he could pursue any and all leads pertaining to that bigger fish, Moriarty (Andrew Scott), spent the episode investigating the destruction of six busts depicting former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Sherlock correctly guessed that the culprit wasn’t just someone railing against the Iron Lady’s anti-union policies some three decades after the fact, but he got everything else wrong. The bust-breaking spree didn’t link back to his arch-enemy Moriarty — they implicated his friend, Mary, the very person he’d vowed to protect.
Back before she was pretending to be a nurse who would end up marrying Sherlock’s BFF, Mary was part of a four-member team of secret agents (A.G.R.A.) charged with rescuing hostages the British embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia six years ago. The mission fell apart, people died, and her former spy pal, A.J., now wants Mary dead as revenge for her “betrayal.” A.J., incidentally, was the one smashing up the Thatcher busts, because he’d hidden an incriminating memory stick in one of them.
Pictured: Sherlock (Cumberbatch) pursues a lead.Photo: Heartwood Films/Masterpiece.
And thus, Mary is forced to trade late-night feeds for some Jason Bourne-style antics, including temporarily poisoning Sherlock, embarking on a trek across the world that was still totally undermined by a certain British detective, and facing off in a shootout with A.J. He ends up dying, but not before letting it slip that the team had been betrayed by an Englishwoman who used the code word “amo.”
It takes a couple of guesses, but Sherlock finally figures out who that Englishwoman was: the secret service’s elderly, lollie-loving secretary, Vivian Norbury. Norbury spills all in an appropriately spooky confrontation with Sherlock, Mary, and the rest of the gang at the London Aquarium. Because she’s got nothing better to do, we guess, she fires a shot at Sherlock. Mary heroically leaps over to take the bullet instead, then uses her final breaths to reveal her real first name (Rosamund Mary, the name of her daughter and the “R” in A.G.R.A.). Then she dies, prompting Watson to emit some mournful death bleats and get very, very angry at Sherlock for not keeping his vow to protect Mary. (Then again, Sherlock wasn’t the one texting redheads on the sly, was he, Watson? Hmm?)
“Families fall out,” Sherlock tells A.J. halfway through the episode, and that definitely seems to be the case. Mary is dead. Watson has shunned Sherlock. The detective can only seek therapy and puzzle out his latest mystery: how on earth to honor Mary’s posthumous request that he “save John.”
Rest in peace, Mary. You may have been slightly shady, but you didn’t deserve death (or Watson’s sleazy sexting).
