Inktober 11th!
Part two of Creepy Team 8: for Spooky Hinata I examined this lovely little book I have about Edo Japan. The last couple dozen pages are dedicated to Youkai, and that’s where I found Medama-Shaburi:
A beautiful woman who stands in front of bridges at night. She entrusts those who cross the bridge with a box. However, she warns them - “never look inside the box.” If you do, you will grow feverish and die. When your corpse is found, its eyes will have been gouged out.
Other places online suggested that the box was filled with the eyes Medama-Shaburi had taken from the corpses. And while the taking of eyes is more of an Uchiha thing, it may be kinda fitting for a Hyuuga too :))
ID under the cut:
[ID: A watercolour and ink drawing of Hyuuga Hinata from Naruto. As in the legend described, she stands in front of a bridge, holding a box wrapped in cloth. She looks you directly in the eye, with a bright and piercing glare, and seems to be telling or asking you something. /End ID]
