Chapter 7: Different runways in fashion shows
Christian Dior SS23 RTW by Maria Grazia Chiuri
The French artist Eva Jospin created a grotto for the stage, its exquisite details belying its basic cardboard structure. In order to stage a sensual dance, Chiuri also enlisted the help of Dutch choreographers Imre and Marne van Opstal and their team. As for the garments shown in this collection the focus was on the extremely particular Baroque period in the 16th century. The Tuilieries Garden, where Dior's ready-to-wear for women is typically shown, continues to serve as Grazia Chiuri's source of inspiration. She is enticed to the area when she encounters Catherine de Medici, an Italian noblewoman who is still viewed as an iconic figure by the French court for her image of women in leadership. In order to appreciate the natural, curvaceous female forms, women's fashion for the Baroque era evolved to include darker hues and more extravagant designs. The collection adheres to the stylistic patterns of that time period, including long dresses with low necklines, virago sleeves, and lace collars used as decorative accents. Grazia Chiuri's short and long gowns were inspired by the fluidity of the garments and their flowing lines. The majority of the looks in the collection were white, black, off-white, gold, and floral, with the general color scheme remaining in the Baroque period style. The corset, a crucial component of the era, is revived in the collection with a modernized "quasi-geometric shape." With the SS23 collection, Dior maintains true to the period's exaggerated motions, extravagant detailing, and majestic traits.

Imre Van Opstal in Sara, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, February 2015. © Rahi Rezvani.
Sara had not enough drama or dance to make it stageworthy. Wearing white contact lenses and full footed unitards, the dancers look like mutated minions from the land of science fiction. Costumes aside, the action consists of little more than the bulk of the troupe twitching and convulsing upstage right while van Opstal crouched, writhed, and gnarled her body and lip-synched.
