CIF/FOB Gulf Grain-Soy, corn barge bids steady as freight firms Aug 26 (Reuters) - Spot basis bids for soybeans and corn shipped by barge to the U.S. Gulf Coast were mostly steady on Monday, amid ongoing concerns about low river levels and as corn futures slumped to new multi-year lows. Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) most-active corn futures Cv1fell to the lowest levels since 2020 on Monday as expectations of a bumper corn crop and a continued stream of farmer selling weighed on futures, analysts said. A closely followed U.S. crop tour run by advisory service ProFarmer projected record crop yields in major producing states Illinois and Iowa, reinforcing a global oversupply picture. While the chance of rainfall across the Midwest this week increased, some weather models are calling for a warmer and drier outlook across the central U.S. in early September, forecaster Maxar said. That is raising some concerns among traders about low water levels on the Mississippi River slowing barge shipments of export-bound crops and adding logistical challenges to grain movement. Fleet delays and falling water levels could further drive up empty barge freight rates, which are already high, brokers said. BG/US CIF Gulf corn barges loaded in August were steady at 72 cents over Chicago Board of Trade September corn CU24 futures. September corn barges were also steady at 86 cents over futures. FOB Gulf September corn export premiums were steady at about 95 cents over CBOT September futures, while October export premiums also steady at about 100 cents over CBOT December futures CZ24. CIF Gulf soybean barges loaded in August were steady at about 68 cents over CBOT November soybean SX24 futures, while September soybean barge bids were up 2 cents at 70 cents over futures. FOB soy export premiums for early September loading at the Gulf remained around 110 cents over November futures. Last-half September shipments were steady at about 95 cents over futures.

In South America, the DAP market witnessed a bullish trend throughout the fourth quarter of 2023. Scarcity of imported supplies due to drought conditions in the Panama Canal and subdued demand from end-user fertilizer markets drove prices up. In the logistics industry, there are many terms that are being used on a daily basis like less than truckload, drayage, reefers, intermodal, dry vans, etc. Most freight brokers and logistics professionals know about them. But intermodal and drayage trucking is two such terms that often confuse people and are sometimes used interchangeably. Both are two very different segments of the freight industry that are closely related.
What do they mean? What’s the difference between the two? How are they connected with each other? Let us find out.
Intermodal & Drayage Trucking: What do They Mean?
Intermodal shipping involves moving goods via multiple modes over long distances without having them handled by individual haulers along each leg of the journey.
For example, a company in Maharashtra, India needs to export spices to Chicago, Illinois. They will first need to move the containers via ocean from a sea port in India to the one in the US. From the sea port in the US, the load will then be delivered to its final destination via road. Since, here more than one mode of transportation is used to ship the container, it is intermodal shipping.
This method saves money since only one carrier needs be paid instead of several independent contractors along each route segment between two destinations. It also reduces environmental impact because fewer trucks will be on roads at once carrying goods across country lines which helps reduce congestion caused by idling engines idling away precious fuel resources waiting for traffic lights ahead.
On the other hand, drayage trucking involves moving shipments over short distances between hubs within port districts. Drayage carriers provide services to and from ports, terminals, rail yards and warehouses. They transport cargo from one location to another within a single mode of transportation (such as by land).

Intermodal and drayage trucking are two intertwined segments of the freight industry. The connection between intermodal trucking and drayage changes depending on your perspective. To ship your loads, you will need two or may be more than two modes of transportation.
However, if you are a broker or a carrier who is into OTR transportation, you will be concerned about only one step. In such case, both the terms will have no connection for you.
Intermodal Shipping Versus Drayage Trucking: Which One to Choose?
If you have to ship a container locally between hubs within port districts, go for drayage. While both intermodal shipping companies and drayage trucking companies can handle small loads that need to be delivered locally, a drayage company will be able to move them quickly and efficiently while an intermodal carrier may not be able to do so as easily.
Remember that drayage carriers are usually local to the port district and do not usually have a national network. They are also smaller than intermodal carriers because they don’t ship out of state or across country very often. Grenville M. Dodge was born in Danvers, MA in 1831, and graduated from Norwich University in 1850 as a civil engineer. He began surveying in Illinois and in 1851 was hired by the Illinois Central Railroad, and then the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad from Davenport to Council Bluffs, IA. He relocated to Council Bluffs in 1854 and opened a second business as a freight shipping agent from the Plains to Colorado. He also married in 1854, and from 1854-1860 surveyed the Union Pacific Railroad and opened a bank, becoming a very prosperous citizen.
Badly wounded at Pea Ridge, upon Dodge’s recuperation he was promoted to brigadier general. General Grant placed him in command of the District of Corinth, Mississippi, part of Grant’s Army of Tennessee, as well as the Second Division, 16th Corps.
The District was not the combat command Dodge preferred, but it did have two tasks which, given his limited number of troops, were serious challenges for Dodge: first, to protect Grant’s lines of communications in his operations against Vicksburg; second, to provide Grant advance warning of any Confederate moves to assist the Vicksburg garrison.
Dodge dealt with these challenges in two main ways: first, he was a prolific builder and manager of railroads to provide Grant the most efficient logistics possible—it was doubtless Dodge’s railway experience that led Grant to give him the assignment. Like US Military Railway Superintendent Herman Haupt, Dodge gained a reputation as a man who could repair a railroad faster than Confederate raiders could cut them.
Dodge also built one of the largest intelligence networks of the war—at least 100 agents, many of whose identities remain unknown to this day, ranging at least as far as Atlanta. He used code names and numbers for most of them. To avoid paper-trails in the Army’s paymaster department, he funded many of his agents through the proceeds of captured Confederate cotton and other contraband sold at auction. When his immediate superior, General Hurlbut, insisted on seeing his lists of agents, Dodge risked relief by refusing to share them. General Grant stood by Dodge’s decision, and in fact told Dodge he regretted not being able to give him a field command, but felt him too essential in the intelligence and railroad work he was doing. In the Vicksburg Campaign, Dodge’s reliable intelligence was absolutely vital to Grant, both in determining Pemberton’s numbers and plans, and in keeping abreast of the activities of Johnston’s and Bragg’s armies, which were desperately seeking ways to relieve Pemberton.
After Vicksburg and his Division’s participation in the relief of Chattanooga, Dodge was rewarded for his successes with the field command he desired: command of the 16th Corps in Sherman’s Army of the Tennessee. Unfortunately, he was badly wounded during the Atlanta campaign in August 1864. Upon his recovery, he took command of the District of the Missouri, where he took the surrender of Confederate forces under “Jeff” Thompson and fought with the Indians before returning to civilian life in 1866. Iowa’s Fifth District almost immediately elected him to Congress, but either Washington life or Congress did not please him; he did not run for re-election in 1868, and returned to Council Bluffs, becoming Chief Engineer of the Union Pacific Railroad.
Dodge played a leading role in the completion of the trans-continental railroad, and became one of the richest men in the American West. Remaining in private business for the rest of his career, he was a lifelong lobbyist in Washington and Des Moines for railroads and Civil War veterans until his death in 1914. (x)
