Captain’s log, supplemental... 29/365 Part four: I love a great melodic line when it comes to a song, whether it is an original or a cover song. Jody Watley did a great job in the cover song,”If I’m Not In Love”. originally sung by Kathy Troccoli and written by Dawn Thomas. In Watley’s rendition, arranged and produced by Phil Gladston, the track utilized session musicians from the likes of Gladston on keyboards, John Robinson on drums, Michael Thompson on guitar, and the great Greg Phillinganes on piano to bring the song more to life.
Vocally, like Groove Theory’s “Hello, It’s Me”, Watley’s vocal not only smooths around the edges, but she also gives a great and convincing performance, thus making the song listenable. Also, compared to its predecessors, the notes sung from the high, lows, strong, soft and on beat are on point and do not feel out of place. The difference is clear: Neither Faith Hlll nor Troccoli herself were able to capture the vocal moment quite like Watley has.
