So I may or may not have started watching another silly little show from the 90s. It kinda hit the sweet spot for me, with it having a fun gimmick while also being a detective show with compelling characters. I also feel like that clown meme looking at the mountain of episodes I still have to get through.

Also I'm going into this show completely blind so please keep spoilers out of this post; as of posting this, I have just finished ep 193! :)

Dude idk how you’re dealing with all these asks so well, I’m not even the one getting them and it’s infuriating me to see everyone up your ass with their own opinions about the ending looking for you to agree with them as if personal preference isn’t a thing that exists. Honestly it fucks me off how ungrateful everyone is acting when Horikoshi has given us such an incredible piece of LITERATURE, and I do mean literature, tackling such important topics when Japan isn’t best known for accepting “society sucks and needs to change” as a message. That man has worked his health into the ground to give us the media and characters and relationships that we all love so dearly, and everyone is too busy thinking they could write a better ending to bother appreciating him for it. Endings are NOTORIOUSLY difficult to write, I beg any one of your anons finds a long running story that ends completely satisfyingly.

And that’s not to mention the fact that most people’s criticism seems to be “why didn’t we get a wiki with the answers to every possible question I have ever had or will ever have”, that’s what FANFIC is for, assholes. Everyone in fandom is so desperate to know every single bit of information, which is FINE, but they forget that generally speaking that’s not what media is for. Imagine how dull books and shows and manga and anime would be if every single thing is spelled out for us, if nothing was left up to interpretation.

I think Horikoshi did a fantastic job at wrapping up a decades long story, and even if I didn’t think that I wouldn’t be out here trying to convince strangers on the internet that they’re wrong to like something, or that their reasoning is good enough reason to say some bullshit like “weird hill to die on but at least you’re dead” or whatever that whack ass anon said.

This was a long ass rant to say: you’re a better person than me, Pika. The way you patiently explain your thoughts even in the face of obstinate idiots is truly admirable and you deserve some cookies or some shit.

Thank you anon, hehe. I can only respond to insults with facts. I suppose that's the mask I've constructed for myself, the way I cope with confrontation that seems to work best for me. It's hard for me to take seriously claims that Horikoshi is a bad writer when such claims refuse to specify what about the writing is bad and why. I don't have reason to believe most of these people have done much study in the art of writing yet, but I do hope they get the chance to do so someday if only to give the rest of us some peace. I've only been lucky enough to have two formal courses in it myself and many years of on-and-off self-study. I'm far from an expert, but I feel confident I know enough to be able to tell when someone is bullshitting their way through it. Hopefully they can go forward in their lives with minds open to learning rather than spending their time hurling feckless insults at strangers on the internet. Fill your life not with hatred and inflexibility but with learning and curiosity. And cookies. Cookies sound great right now.

I don't think I have ever hyperfixated on something this long other than bts.. I've always had interests that stayed with me for a long time but then for a few months I kind of stopped because there was no content or I got into something else... But with bangtan it has been a constant interest for years. And it really sucks that they have to go, even though Jin is coming back in 6 months.. I will be forever grateful for them for how they handled their solo era. I know lots of people simply couldn't keep up with all the content (me included, I still have a few things I need to watch when I'll have time) and/or burned out because of how much we got but at the same time, time flew by so quickly. I mean Jin left a year ago and it doesn't feel like a year? At least to me.

I'm a little bit afraid of the future though because while I know they recorded a lot of content for us, I feel like it'll be different and fewer than a solo album promo. Now I'm not trying to say that they didn't do enough for us before anyone misunderstands! I just want to say that I feel like because the content will be different and nobody here to idk randomly go live, time will feel slower than it did in the past year :( I'm also really curious if I can keep my hyperfixation throughout this period or if I'll also take a break for awhile. Bangtan has never really stopped before so it felt like there is always something to do or watch.

it’s very valid to worry about how these next few months will go; as you said yourself, both them and us fans never experienced such a period of time before. it’s so normal to be a scared of the unknown, of the future in general, in my opinion! but as I try to vehemently tell myself these days: we have no choice but to find out eventually, and however it will go, time will pass anyway (yes it’s this infamous quote that has been going around social media but it’s so true!).

maybe we as a fandom will finally be able to slow things down to actually enjoy and appreciate the content we get during that time more (I feel like everything has been incredibly fast-paced which took away a lot of my enjoyment, actually) but also the content we received so far. also what namjoon said in his letter today is something I try holding close to my heart; it really is a comfort to have something to look forward to. they won’t be back forever, this is all temporary, and life will inevitably go on. repeating this to yourself about a hundred times a day actually helps a little! ….. and it’s gonna be insane once they all come back. just imagine that pure joy. it’s worth waiting for.

if they have been such a constant in your life, this little time apart will only make your heart grow fonder, I’m sure of it. a hyperfixation isn’t the healthiest thing, pretty sure we all secretly know that (yet here we are), so hey, this could be a pretty good opportunity to dabble into various new things, or to go back to old loves of yours, or to just concentrate on something else entirely. your heart is so big, there’s more than enough space for your persistent love for bts and fresh and new beloved things that you might come across!

that comfort-giving, fondness-inducing, seven-butt imprinted corner in there (taps your chest sternly) will always be there if you want it to!! 🤍🤍🤍

💝 what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

hmmm, I'm a litte surprised that my Hawkeye/Frank fic got a lot of positive comments, but as a smaller pair it does kinda make sense since people looking through the ship tag are more likely to find it and be excited about a new fic.

Also in general any comments about someone being emotionally affected by what I write is a little surprising (and really awesome), because I'm pretty emotionally detached from my own writing, and I tend to aim for subtle indications of emotion over big statements and idk if it works most of the time lol, so if I make someone feel some kind of way it feels like a real success.

💋when you leave comments on a fic, do you want to hear back from the writer?

I actually don't care either way, whatever the author does is fine with me. If I leave a long involved comment I might look forward to a response, but if I don't get one I'll forget about it in a day or two anyway lol, and it's nbd.

🍭why did you start writing?

Like way back when I was a kid I just had ideas I wanted to express somehow, and I was no good at drawing lol so it had to be writing. I usually only wrote summaries and outlines of stuff at first, then I started writing scenes and failed attempts at fic that never got anywhere bc I'd run out of steam after half a scene, then longer scenes, and now I'm finally writing full fics. And I still write because I have ideas/opinions/hot takes that I want to express and sometimes meta just doesn't cut it.

There's also a 'be the change you want to see' mentality lol, I only feel inspired to write if no one else is writing [concept]. One nice thing about being really picky about characterization is that the motivation to write remains pretty constant, because the more specific I am about what I want to see, the less likely it is that someone else has already written it.

🌿how does creating make you feel?

I enjoy it! If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't do it lol, I have v little willpower to push myself through something I don't want to or have to do. I do find it most enjoyable when writing from Hawkeye's pov right now - like I genuinely really enjoy describing things from Hawkeye's pov, the comparisons he makes, the way he phrases stuff, it's super fun to emulate and I always get a little kick when I write something that feels genuinely funny or witty lol. If I'm writing "my own" prose (or BJ's pov lol) then I find that the act of putting words together feels more like work and I have to get enjoyment from just creating what I want to see.

I'm actually unofficially planning to polish up and finish a Berserk wip I've had in my docs for like 5 years for a fandom event, and I'm wondering if I'll have fun or find it a chore lol, since I'm not at the height of my Berserk obsession and neither character has an intrinsically fun voice to write in.

How has the pandemic been treating you? honestly, not terribly. im very grateful for the experience ive had bc i know its a privilege. i kept my job, as did my friends and family. the additional time has left more opportunities to pursue hobbies and interests, and i am a homebody, so my preferred lifestyle has been the norm. that said, there's also been the requisite fear, guilt, anxiety, and stress to contend with.

hiii! I've recently returned to legion fandom after having loved the show years ago! I'm hearing lots of noise about the new bendis run and u seem to have all ur stuff in order! If it's possible, could u school me about the new run is working against what losh stands for? Thanks for reading!

First off, welcome back dude! Glad to have you with us!

But second, oh bro. The new run is... hm. I have some opinions. As a reference, I’ve read the full first issue and a good amount of screen caps from the others, but you don’t have to read far to pick up most of the problems I’m going to talk about.

I would also like to preface this by saying I in no way mean to legitimately insult Bendis as a person, this is solely about how he’s writing the LoSH run. Rant under cut.

I was really excited when this run was announced. I grew up with the animated show and it was my introduction to both DC and superheroes as a whole, so the world and characters are very close to my heart. When the new series was getting teased, I was looking forward to not just the awesome character designs, but also for the new fans it was going to introduce to LoSH with the pull of Super Sons characters (more on that later).

However, just within just the first few pages it felt really off. The pacing was weird and the dialogue felt like it was jumping from point to point just to get the exposition out there. I know comics in general have faster pacing than graphic novels, shows, or movies, but that wasn’t the problem. The writing felt choppy and confusing.

That brings me to my other writing issue. Bendis clearly... doesn’t... get these characters. I know he’s done other stuff that’s good, my dad praises the daylights out of some of his work, but as a first time reader... not a fan.

All the characters feel weirdly sterile? Like they don’t understand human emotion to the point that they come off as cold/creepy it’s :/ but I don’t think it’s on purpose? The big issue that grew off of characterization, however, came with the Super Sons crossover.

Basic premis leading up to this, Jon got aged up five years shortly before this run by way of some space time weirdness, came back, and ended up creating a future holiday that was really important to the United Nations.

The Legion came to the past and was like: yo you’re important and we need your help with a thing, want to come to the future and be on our team? Which already turned a lot of people off because Jon had just gotten back to his family after some big trauma. But anyways, he goes with them like it’s the best opportunity ever, but there’s a case they’re working on in the future involving Aquaman’s trident and Jon’s like: Oh Damian would be perfect for this.

Queue the shit show.

There’s better breakdowns of this out there that go into detail about how fucked up this issue was but to summarize the main big no nos:

Right off the bat, air in the future is weird and you need a special medical patch to breath. As a result, when Damian is brought to the 31st century, he starts choking/suffocating. Jon is freaking out because holy shit my friend is dying but the Legion just stands around like... what are we supposed to do? Help him? Until Brainy finally does the only human thing (ironically) and takes Damian to the medical bay.

Throughout the whole issue everyone is treating Damian like shit because in whatever timeline they’re in he turns evil in the future. This not only undoes a lot of Damian’s character development (and is a plot point DC writers have already done to death) but also makes the whole team look like dicks for being hostile to a kid who hasn’t done anything yet.

Finally, when Damian ends up actually helping them, proving he’s a good person, Imra tells Jon Damian has to go back to his time. They’re both confused because there’s no reason for that to happen, so then Imra, without asking, completely erases all memories of coming to the future from Damian’s mind and forces him unconscious. Jon is rightfully angry and Imra tries to convince him to let her take Damian back, which he does, and that’s just kinda how it ends. Reading this scene is really creepy because Imra comes off very manipulative and like... idk it just makes me really uncomfortable.

They also have Cham also call Damian baby Hitler at one point so that’s fun 👍

There was, of course, huge outrage when this issue was published. It was pretty much universally accepted that Damian was treated like shit the entire issue and that it was both out of character for Jon and (from Legion fans’ perspectives) out of character for the whole team to act the way they did.

It was a slap in the face to Super Sons fans and fans in general to have a character be treated so grossly, and it tainted a lot of non LoSH fans’ perspectives of the characters.

That was probably the most painful thing for me. These characters have been and are a big part of my life, so to see them written the way they were, and to see so many people hating on them (rightfully so for these versions) sucked.

I haven’t looked into the newer issues if there are any more out, I’m just ignoring the run at this point because it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I really hope Bendis takes it in a new direction, that the story itself gets more cohesive and that the characters become actually likable, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it just stays at the level it is. At this point, I would just stick to older LoSH comics if you want more content.

(Though let’s please agree as a fandom to steal some of these designs because they’re fucking fantastic. The art is the only part of this run I’ll praise.)

If you have more questions or want clarification feel free to ask! There are also a lot of other people on here and on other sites who have talked about their own issues with the run. And of course there are people who are enjoying this story or are at least waiting to see where it goes and that is also valid, it’s just really not my cup of tea.
