Friday, August 30: Judas Priest, "Children of the Sun"
Firepower was ultimately all anyone could really hope for from a latter-day Judas Priest album: in its better moments it was catchy, heavy and stirring in equal measure, and the band played with conviction throughout. It was only once pre-release advertising noted that Glenn Tipton would retire from touring that suspicion arose about the extent of his contribution to the record, even as Rob Halford and Richie Faulkner insisted he wrote and played on every track. And to be sure, there were enough familiar touches to “Children of the Sun” that one could believe Tipton was at least somewhat involved in its construction and recording- that it was a bit more of a march than a charger actually made it more credible that Priest’s longstanding guitarist and primary creative force was still at the driver’s seat here. The track was trademark Priest in its stridency and clarity of purpose, with Halford focused and powerful without stretching his vocals too thin while Tipton and Faulkner churned riffs that retained no small amount of melody even as they oozed molten metal. Scott Travis had a bit less to do and mostly stayed steady with the beat, but his percussion was focused and maintained a certain momentum. “Children of the Sun” wasn’t a world beater by any stretch, but it was exactly the kind of late-career track that had enough of the old magic (not to mention an unerring sense of craft) to not only justify its existence but also make that case that new Judas Priest music was something worth indulging.
