had an idea about a MAS horror coffee shop au. meet cute on tbe surface but secretly serial murder mystery drama under the lid. now hear me out

sabo owns and runs a coffee shop in town where both ace and marco happen to get coffee, theyre both his regulars but theyre never there at the same time--

marco comes in during the mornings when he jogs during the weekend, he always orders a plain coffee with oat milk, and he talks to sabo about anything new hes found particularly interesting. hes a family doctor with a hobby for traveling, hes silvering at the sides of his hair, usually smiling, and is a down to earth guy you can trust.

SECRETLY , marco is a private detective after spending years as a battlefield medic, he consults with forensics on murder cases sometimes for his familiarity with weapons and violence. for months now hes been quietly following the gruesome serial murders of high profile officials and wealthy people in town and thinks the culprit is the citys local vigilante, the mysterious Fire Fist

ace comes in at the oddest hours of the night when hes strangely beat up or bored and orders something different every time but he never wants it to taste like coffee. he makes jokes and teases and flirts from the dark corners of the shop and doesnt let sabo get a good look at him, but hes suprisingly sweet. tells him he better not be keeping the place open 24/7 (hes not. he keeps it open 20/7 thank u very much) and always smells a little burney, but is a nice guy you can be yourself around.

SECRETLY ace is the local vigilante Fire Fist whos been protecting the city for the last couple years (does he have powers ?? idk. maybe hes just going at that shit dirty batman style) and who has been playing cat and mouse with that private detective for a while now but hes kind of got a thing for the silver fox look soooooo 👀 but hes trying to catch whoevers committing the murders and keep people (marco) safe, without ruining his secret identity and getting arrested

sabo grew up in a strict rich family to the son of an investor, not even a businessman his father never worked at all, but he grew up seeing the way people with money treated others, terrible crimes would just get paid away. so sabo left and built a life on his own instead, started a little coffee shop in an old run down building, he lives in the tiny upstairs unit but hes happy with it. hes too skinny and pale and has a weird scar he prefers to cover with hair and loose clothes, but hes a guy you feel you can tell anything to.

SECRETLY sabo has been spending his free time hunting and slaughtering members of the upper class in increasingly violent and gruesome ways, with his favorite go-to being Lead Pipe At Your Body. but hes meticulous, he never leaves a trace behind, and neither the police nor the detective nor Fire Fist can find him. sabos a vigilante in his own sort of way, the people hes killing are associated with trafficking or violence anyway, but he only knows that because hes been torturing and murdering people for information. which does not stand up well in court. so hes decided will handle it his god damn self instead

now hes trying to keep his secret under wraps by keeping his friends close.. and his enemies........well......... you know 😏

And Seth has definitely never shown signs of liking Charlie in any sort of romantic way, at times Seth may actually seem like he downright hates Charlie, but he secretly looks up to him and respects him and cares for him. But Charlie And Seth have never kissed, whatever picture your friend showed you must be fake. It doesn't necessarily mean he's lying. Maybe he was tricked into believing it and then he tricked you into believing it. Again, I'm not trying to criticize your friend. I just want you to know the truth, and I think you should tell your friend this because he should know the truth, too. so for this one i would switch up things a bit, it's sorta an AU where the MC accidentally becomes the cinderella bc everyone thought she was someone else and she gets in too deep that she's afraid to reveal the truth. she discovers that nico is a spy for that other country!! she doesn't immediately rat him out bc she understands what having a possibly life-threatening secret is like, she just uses it as a way to make him do whatever she wants THEN he finds out she's an imposter so they keep each other's secrets to save their own asses... u know what this needs? enemies to friends to lovers… they grow from inherently hating each other to understanding each other and even tho the way they did it in the game was trash, i did want to use kidnapping as a plot device bc ofc who doesn't love a little damsel in distress every now and then lmao

17: how did they spend their summers/free time as a child?

When not helping his parents around the house n farm he was probably catching frogs, playing in mud, and climbing trees with Bea. I imagine Bea tells a lot of good stories about grand adventures and make-believe, Mutt could just sit and listen to them for hours. He'd read his own books, too, he just liked the way she tells em. He didn't have many other friends.

As a teen he got a bit scrappier and was running around town more often, helping with the farm less, made more friends. Boy friends he didn't know how to handle bc he secretly like-liked them and didn't understand so was always scrapping and tussling with them instead. (biting you) (intricate rituals, etc)

I don't think he minds lying or stealing all that much, mostly because the closest person in his life currently would tell him anything and if not there must be a good reason for it and he can't imagine himself getting hurt in that way. He probably could, feel hurt from it, but he hasn't experienced that yet. Keeps his expectations low, maybe, or simply thinks a lie isn't necessarily malicious. Its not like he's exactly truthful about himself to people around town. They think him n Bea are in love, not, married for convenience. And stealing is.. whatever as a general concept, he doesn't have anything super valuable but he does have meaningful items I don't think he realizes would hurt if they were lost. But just u know, if they steal food if they steal money they musta needed it.

Knowing what Dorian did and why he did it, though, I know Mutt understands and doesn't really judge him for it. It's different, it's different when you gotta protect yourself. so january 1st i was walking with no shoes around haberfield. i saw this person who called me over and asked me about my feet and then about jesus. she spent like half an hour trying to convince me and kind of berating me for not believing in jesus.

she showed me this insane poster of hers, covered in plastic and tape, sort of falling apart from being rolled and re-rolled. the images were clearly put together by someone who doesn't have a ton of experience putting stuff together, but please understand i don't mean this in any kind of mean or put-down-y way. i have a huge love for outsider artists, and i kind of consider myself one too.

shit, i guess i need to explain what outsider artists are,,,,,,,,,,

yall probably already know this but the definition of "outsider artist" is basically "someone who is an artist but doesn't really do it the way ur supposed to, or someone who is completely independent from traditional art systems or whatever." so an independent musician who's style is really really weird and obscure and not-the-thing-you-are-meant-to-do might be an outsider artist. it's definitely a vibes-based term, who is and isn't an outsider artist is kind of up to you.

to me, outsider artists are usually people who seem kind of out-of-place in the world. and everyone is out-of-place to some degree, but i guess there's some kind of magnetic out-of-placeness to them. something really divergent and itchy about their persona or their history or work. i'd almost call vincent van gogh an outsider artist, but he ended up kind of becoming a figure of the establishment after he died.

there's also musicians like daniel johnston, who made super cheap recordings in the 90s and managed to gain a cult fan-base of weirdos (especially cos of kurt cobain being a fan of his). his style is really inspirational to me! i recorded this weird cover of his song "walking the cow" just to kind of say thank u to him for existing, cos he lived a really sad and too-short life and it can feel like suffering like that isn't worth it, and what was the point? but also - walking the cow mightn't have saved my life, but also it might have. it's one of the many things that collectively save my life constantly.

the first outsider visual artist i found out about was henry darger, who i found out about through another outsider musician called jordaan mason (whose album "divorce lawyers i shaved my head" is absolutely insanely good)

this is just one of many excellent songs on the album!!! i also recommend "racehorse get married" and "avalanches" ("avalanches" is a total banger and completely changed how i play guitar). anyway this album features a lot of references to henry darger's "in the realm of the unreal". this is a kind of graphic novel thing which was never published or even finished, and yet it's over 15,000 pages long. when henry died, it was found by his landlords and eventually it gained notoriety.

unfortunately i've never been able to read it or any part of it, cos it's really hard to get ur hands on. i don't think it's ever been released in full to the public, which really bugs me. the artwork in the manuscript has inspired lots of my favourite musicians - jordaan mason, sufjan stevens, avey tare from animal collective.

but even still, more than the work itself, the idea of someone secretly inventing huge worlds in private and dying without ever being discovered is so cool to me. i worry about not mattering, and truth is that even if i was a famous artist person, i would still worry about that. making worlds like henry's brings me genuine comfort. i consider my tv show to be my version of "in the realm of the unreal", and its really great having a place to go and imagine the lives of these beautiful weirdos, and letting my friends see it, letting them influence it. and hopefully one day letting them help me make it, letting them create it.

anyway!

one other outsider artist that the musician sufjan stevens was associated with is royal robertson. his work was really inspirational on sufjan's best album (heeheheheheheheh) "the age of adz", from 2010.

here's the best song imo on the album, and probably the song i'd take with me to a desert island if i could only pick one. royal robertson drew the artwork for the album. royal was kind of a paranoid schizophrenic, and according to sufjan was pretty misogynistic too. he had a family, but it fell apart, and a lot of his art is about umm how much he hates his wife??? there's also a lot of biblical imagery in there, very black-and-white us-vs-them mentalities.

the art produced by people who are convinced of some kind of intense delusion or seem to live in a different world to most people is really cool to me. i'm a person who lives in my own head a lot, and i've always struggled to make that inner life fit in with the world, and to try let the world change me enough that i can survive. it's often not very healthy to go the whole way into the darkness, like with royal robertson.

recently i've watched someone who i consider to be a great artist, ye (formally known as kanye), basically become that same paranoid figure. royal seemed to really react badly to his divorce and the loss of his wife, and turned that anger outwards towards her rather than into some kind of wake-up call. i don't really want to judge, i don't know these people. but ye seems weirdly similar, turning towards christianity, becoming more agitated and paranoid, more public with his most harmful and scariest beliefs, and a lot of this really hit it's lowest point after his divorce.

i find the art made by ye before his divorce often pretty problematic, but also earnestly beautiful, honest, endearing, yknow. complicated but very human. and to me, it felt like something coming from someone who is really unwell, especially his post-mother-death work. and i can relate to feeling desperate and needing some kind of relief, and being a fuck-up, and all that kind of stuff.

and now it's really different. when i listen to the newest music, it feels like it's coming from someone mostly incapable of introspection. it's really bizarre art. and that's attractive because it's so odd and unique, but it's also really repulsive and hard to empathise with outside of feeling pity.

anyway, ye had a super christian period in 2019, and his art was really reminiscient of the stuff the woman at the bus showed me.

the merch is so not-normal. idk how else to describe. it's not BAD, but umm.... it's kind of bad? but maybe that's what's good about it? it's just so WEIRD. and his 2019 album is the same, it's just bizarre. he is capable of making regular enjoyable music, he did it in 2018 and he did it in 2021. but in 2019, he just made something fucking bizarre.

i really like this album, but it's weird. i like it because it's weird. i like it cos it's uncomfortable and it forces me to see a world i don't really understand. and when i try to understand that world, unlike the newest material, i do actually see things i appreciate and wanna see.

i think the aesthetic is also kind of similar to memes that combine different qualities of font or resolution or image to make something just bizarre and funny.

I’ll be doing the 6 main OCs for Operation Peridot (Caleb, Jason, Maribel, Lewis, Mina and Siân) as well as my deity OCs (Eris, Carina, Aster, Pyre, Vanta, Danielewski, and Unnamed) as they’re the only ones that 💙 applies to. Also sorry this is long lol, I love discussing my OCs (thanks so much for the ask!)

Caleb Booth:

💙: As a part of Operation Peridot, all characters involved with Iridium Orbs can utilise powers associated with one word. For Caleb, that word is contain. He mostly utilises it for self-preservation purposes (contain yourself) and for keeping his powers in check (contain it), but also is useful for binding powers together. He also uses it to seal objects away from him, or to seal himself away from the outside world as a form of shield.

💯: Caleb is a huge fan of panel shows (a subset of comedy shows often involving comedians, a fairly simple premise and a lack of meaning for points) with his favourite being one I made up called Sleight of Hand about truths and lies (though real life panel shows he’d enjoy are Would I Lie To You and The Unbelievable Truth); he is ambidextrous, initially left handed but when his corruption set in he started to use his right hand more to compensate; Caleb would never use any forms of social media due to fears of being traced.

Jason Anastas:

💙: His associated word is warp. He mostly uses it in the form of portals and distortions

💯: He joined the organisation when he ran away from home thinking his parents wouldn’t accept him for being trans, turns out they did now he’s got superpowers and a supportive family (woo!); his favourite food is anything breakfast related, especially eggs; his favourite place is in urban locations at 3am.

Maribel Ignacio:

💙: Her word is fire. She mostly uses it in an arson way, but has recently started to be more creative, such as boosting luck (you’re on fire!) and charm (you’re looking fire). She has also used it to make enemy guns go off (aim and fire)

💯: She is a keen gardener and really likes roses; her favourite video game is Super Smash Bros Ultimate (she mostly plays random but secretly she hopes for Roy/Chrom or Samus/Dark Samus to show up); tried to make her middle name Danger when she transitioned but her family wanted a more namey name instead, she went with Gaia “because if I can’t be powerful, I’ll be the Earth herself!”.

Lewis Ford:

💙: His word is stun. He uses it to stun people.

💯: He is the least creative person on the team, and the only person to only have one use for their word; his default pose in pictures is finger guns; his nickname “Fore” comes from initially being the fourth person on a previous team before joining up with Maribel and Mina but said team didn’t really get to know him outside of being the fourth member, so out of spite he’s always number four even when there’s less than four members.

Sae Mina:

💙: Eir word is chill. Ey mostly use it to freeze their settings and to make things colder, though ey also occasionally use it to relax and unwind (chill out) which can act as a local anaesthetic ala laughing gas.

💯: Eir name is written in eastern order (last name, first name) which has led to many people calling em Sae as eir first name when it’s not; Mina primarily uses ey/em/eir pronouns but does like ae/aer and she/her; once Mina and Jason were bored and combined their powers for a “drug trip” (in reality it was just them chilling out and relaxing to weird warped visuals but it did help them relax).

Siân Nevitt:

💙: Its word is bounce. She mostly uses it to deflect attacks and to run away (gotta bounce). She has also used it to survive long jumps down.

💯: Doesn’t actually like basketball or any sports despite what her word may imply; actually has blue hair but due to experimentations in her youth her hair turned silvery white with a purple corrupted streak (it doesn’t mind and thinks it looks cool); has way too many board games and jigsaws at any point in time.

Eris:

💙: Power to create gods and other godlike entities, domain over every world in existence. Powerful reality bender

💯: has existed for a very, very long time now and doesn’t remember her original family or purpose, has taken to rebuilding a new family to help; thinks the best thing mortals have created is cherry flavoured cola; his child self has once been brought back to haunt over a small town by transforming the residents into monsters unwillingly, but has since been freed from the curse and now has a new son… yay?

Carina:

💙: Messenger to Eris, can see basically anything with xyr third eye, can warp to any universe they please

💯: Favourite animal is a turtle, probably related to her enjoyment of the Discworld series of novels; uses Tumblr (it runs a blog dedicated to shipping the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxies) and is cursed with the knowledge of what a Tumblr sexyman is; first became a god/deity by wishing on a star to join it and sometimes watches over past/alternate versions of herself and her family.

Aster:

💙: Deity of fluidity, stars and wishes. Can grant wishes within certain reasons

💯: Was the one to make Carina into a deity so technically he’s her dad, but also they’re siblings thanks to Eris doing the hard work… not like it matters because they’re technically unrelated; very aroace and very bigender; on account of her arms constantly melting, doesn’t really like doing super fiddly things like Legos and origami

Vanta:

💙: God of darkness, nightmares, etc. He has recreated towns, people and situations to torment humans in and to make them break and submit to his will. Not a very pleasant guy

💯: First became a deity by disturbing natural spirits who cursed him to be only a shadow for his hubris, unfortunately he thrived on being one; once tried to scare some deer by uncanny valleying himself into one and accidentally caused a national scare of deer disease and gave a 9-year-old boy nightmares (that boy turned out to be another OC called Xander); surprisingly not into horror, but is into high fantasy shows (like Game of Thrones), has consumed a very large amount of isekai anime that way. Extra fun fact: he has tried many times to usurp Eris as the full holder of power in the spaces between but has failed. Repeatedly. Not out of lack of trying, Eris is just better than him.

Pyre:

💙: Minor domain over fire and twins. Can set itself on fire at will

💯: It is the child that set Eris free of the curse, as a thank you it is now a god instead of dying alongside the curse that brought it back to life (it’s complicated…); doesn’t quite understand what being a god entails and thus mostly just follows their alive, non godly twin sibling in the real world as they solve mysteries and do cool stuff without him; due to the fact that both of them have orange skin and are not fully solid, Aster considers Pyre to be her successor and is trying to beef with it, Pyre doesn’t understand and thinks Aster is the coolest.

Danielewski:

💙: Servant of Vanta, but also holds minor domains over music. No special powers

💯: In real life he used to be called Daniel Lato and was a part time SynthV producer under the pseudonym Danielewski (mostly used Eclipse Studio synths like SOLARIA and ASTERIAN), but was murdered and brought back by Vanta; doesn’t require the mask he wears, he thinks it makes him look cool; his favourite book is House of Leaves, favourite game The Stanley Parable, favourite non-vocal synth producer/band Tally Hall (he especially likes Miracle Musical II)

Unnamed:

💙: Servant of Vanta, holds minor domain over writing. Has minor healing hands and can perform other weak spells.

💯: In life, her name was Esme Lin and she was a ghost writer, upon resuscitating Danielewski and forfeiting her own life to rebirth them as gods she went by Unnamed to reflect how she felt in life: unnoticed and unrecognised; her body is covered in magical scarring from her ritual; she and Danielewski frequently have dance-offs in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep.

(Quick note: both Daniel Lato and Esme Lin exist outside of their god forms in another universe, hence why I will not be tagging them in here, I will expand upon the still living Daniel and Esme in another post hopefully)

You just tell her the truth, beamie. Time is not wasted unless you assume it so. Being lost is normal, and the fear is terrifying… but it is the truth and if your mother doesn’t understand (though by the sounds of it she won’t)… then it’s up to you to make sense of it.

I remember when I was in high school as a technical theatre student for my vocation. I made excuses when I first decided to go rather than pursue my passion. But I was just lost, and I felt a similar shame.

When my mom saw me finally apply for graphic design in college, I could tell she knew I had found my way. And even though I found it, I still had to gather my bearings and course correct after 4 years of doing tech work rather than performing like I knew I secretly desired. You may feel pathetic now, but I promise that what you feel is not how I see you and it’s probably how your mom sees you too.

The shit is gonna find it’s place and make sense in your life if you let it. Please don’t let these feelings take away the joy you have, because I can see it in the way you write that you love this. Most people who take breaks from tumblr don’t come back. But you did and I can’t tell you how relieved and happy I was that you did, because I saw it as a sign that you didn’t want to give up.

I have no idea if anything I said was a comfort or helped but I just had to say it. It hurts my heart to see y’all struggle, and I hope the ask comes out as something I wrote with positive intent.
