Game On: How Stray Kids 'Item' Captures Their Rise to Success
Introduction
Stray Kids made their name onto the scene with their powerful performances and self-produced music. Formed by JYP Entertainment through a reality show, the group comprises eight talented members: Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. Known for their loud and intense music, heartfelt lyrics, and unique sound, Stray Kids have quickly established a global fanbase. Their self-produced music often explores themes of self-discovery, resilience, and empowerment that reflect their own journey from trainees to successful idols. In their track "Item," Stray Kids continue this narrative, releasing a track that tells the story of how Stray Kids rose to success.
Stray Kids' "Item" is a B-Side track from the album "5-Star". This upbeat track integrates video game imagery of the game Pac-Man to cleverly convey messages of self-reliance, ambition, and success. The song captures the personal experience and story of the group's personal growth and resilience, framed within a metaphorical gaming context.
As a Stay since 2021, I was able to witness their journey to success. The group went from being called as the "Flop Group of JYPE" to being one of the "4th Gen Leader" of the K-Pop Scene. This title alone shows the successful growth that the group experienced until this year.
Lyrics Analysis
"Item, item, I ate them, Pac-Man / Item, item, I ate them all, game set"
This opening line sets the vibe and feel for the entire song, using the iconic video game character Pac-Man as a metaphor for the groups' story of rising to success. Just as Pac-Man consumes items to gain power and advance to the next level, Stray Kids gains experiences, skills, and knowledge to drastically improve, grow stronger, and progress in their career. The phrase "game set" is used to showcase that the group has completed a challenge.
"Item dependent? I am self-dependent / Full equipment, fully charged bag"
This particular line emphasizes the importance of being independent over dependance on external factors. As the group continues to strive, this line showcases the groups ability to rely on their own skills and talents. Stray Kids has been writing and composing their own songs since they debuted and constantly being involve in choreographies. Which shows that they are an independent group that doesn't rely on external resources to thrive.
"Instead of cash, I have ambition and courage / The trinity of truth, sincerity, and humility"
These lines emphasizes the value of intangible qualities such as ambition, courage, truth, sincerity, and humility over material things. Stray Kids showcases the value of personal virtues and determination and expresses the message that these are one of the true drivers of success. This is a reflection of the groups' qualities and how they prioritized staying true to themselves, being sincere and passionate towards their work, and still being down to earth despite of the success.
"Started from the bottom, I made it mine"
Reflecting on their journey, Stray Kids express pride in their progress from humble beginnings to achieving their goals. This line acknowledges the hard work and perseverance required to "make it" in their industry.
"Got the best of the best, nothing much, I confess / All the stars in my eyes make my galaxy"
These lines expresses the message about the groups' sense of self-assuredness and vast potential that they can see for themselves. The group utilizes the metaphor of a "galaxy", wherein a galaxy is filled with stars that also represents limitless opportunities, dreams, and aspirations that they desire. Stray Kids also emphasizes their confidence in their own abilities and that these abilities will be a bridge for the group to reach more opportunities. It also emphasizes their unique position in the music industry, where they shine brightly amid a constellation of talents.
"Even if you try to hurt me with sharp words / Sorry but there's no damage"
Being in the spotlight on a stage allows tomatoes to be constantly thrown. Throughout their journey, Stray Kids has received countless of bashing and negative feedback from the society. However, despite of the sharp words being thrown to them, the group never faltered and crumbled. This line highlights emotional resistance, it shows that negative comments and criticism cannot hurt them and crumble down their walls. It also serves as a message to fans, encouraging them to remain confident and unaffected by negativity.
Conclusion
"Item" by Stray Kids is an anthem of empowerment that uses video game metaphors to illustrate personal growth, resilience, and self-reliance. The song celebrates the journey from humble beginnings to achieving greatness through hard work and determination. It encourages listeners to harness their inner strength, remain humble, and continuously strive for self-improvement.
