Introduction to the Carers Trust Impact Report from their President, The Princess Royal.
Over the past year, the cost-of-living crisis has continued to make life extremely difficult for many people. As President of Carers Trust, I have seen first-hand the alarming impact it is having on unpaid carers, many of whom were already experiencing severe financial hardship because they had had to give up work to carry on caring for a family member.
This is why it has been so important this year to mark 50 years since the establishment of the first local carer organisation in the UK. The result was the Crossroads Care scheme which, along with The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, worked to develop a network of local carer organisations. As the need for a UK-wide network of local carer services became ever more obvious, the two charities merged in 2012 to form Carers Trust. The merger represented a key milestone in the building of such a network.
As part of marking this year’s 50th anniversary, I was pleased to attend a supporter reception in London in June. I was delighted to be able to personally thank the trusts, foundations, corporate partners and philanthropists that have enabled Carers Trust to keep delivering essential support for unpaid carers and local carer organisations.
In my visits to local carer services within the Carers Trust network, including Bridgend and Gloucestershire this year, I have seen the invaluable support and collective impact that Carers Trust and its network of local partner organisations continue to deliver right across the UK.
I am particularly pleased that The Princess Royal Respite Fund for Carers continues to enable Carers Trust to provide local carer organisations with funding to support unpaid carers to access much-needed respite and breaks. The Fund is successfully achieving its two main outcomes: reducing isolation and increasing resilience and optimism around life balance for unpaid carers.
I do hope you will choose to support Carers Trust in our endeavours to continue to expand our network and improve the lives of more and more unpaid carers.

Recofloor ‘hits the road’ to support the industry
Recofloor hosted several pop-up visits and trade events at flooring distributors during summer 2023, which provided an excellent opportunity to introduce how the waste vinyl flooring collection scheme works and how it can help the flooring sector solve their disposal needs and challenges.
From May to September, Recofloor Scheme Manager, Carla Eslava visited distributor trade counters located from Manchester to Cardiff where she gave an overview of Altro and Polyflor’s take-back scheme to the trade counter staff and foot traffic.
In the first face-to-face visits since the start of the pandemic, Recofloor’s proactive approach was welcomed, particularly by trade counter staff who benefited from the latest news. New contractors were more interested in the longer and more educational morning trade events learning more about the scheme. Recofloor promotional materials, flyers, chocolates and pens, plus Altro and Polyflor goodies were delivered at the event. Recofloor branded window decals, specifically designed for distributors that indicates the site is a designated Recofloor drop-off point, were also dropped off.
“Many contractors were interested to hear that Recofloor can accept LVT offcuts and loose lay vinyl and were keen to increase their collections that include this material. It was helpful to remind them of what we can collect,” comments Carla. “Through engaging with customers, we can spread awareness of the scheme and the convenience of free waste vinyl flooring disposal and how their participation could contribute to winning more business. As so many Recofloor members can attest, ‘it’s a win-win all round’ for the environment and business cost savings.”
In addition to the visits and the morning trade events, the scheme undertook additional calls to distributors who also received flyers along with a short Recofloor video clip for those with a promotional monitor at their trade counters.
Pop-up visits and morning trade events, which included scheme promotional items, were held at the following locations:
May 2023
TradeChoice Carpet and Flooring, Birmingham
3D Flooring Supplies, Bristol
Trade Choice & Flooring, Bristol
Richards, Bristol
July 2023
Pennine Floorings Supplies Ltd
TradeChoice Carpet and Flooring, Manchester
Branagan Flooring Services Ltd
Lee Floorstok Ltd, Liverpool
September 2023
HFD Ltd, Bridgend,
3D Flooring Supplies Ltd, Cardiff
Birch Distribution Ltd, Sheffield
This year, Recofloor also welcomed two new distributor members to their drop-off network – HFD Ltd, Coleshill and SASGO Ltd, Glenrothes, Scotland, bringing the number of UK-wide drop-off sites to more than 60. Recofloor bins are now set up at the new sites and promotional flyers were delivered, informing vinyl customers of the service. More distributors are invited to join the network and benefit from extensive Recofloor support. All participants were invited by email to register for the regular Recofloor e-newsletter.
Carla adds: “We provided flyers, in both digital and print formats, to promote distributors’ drop off points, also informing customers of the easy access to the Recofloor bins on site. The service is free, simple and offers a sustainable and cost-saving alternative to traditional waste disposal routes.
“As part of our ongoing communication efforts, we’re encouraging our distributor members, who are not already, to subscribe to our e-newsletter so that they receive timely updates and stay informed about all the latest developments within the Recofloor scheme.”
To subscribe, simply click on the following link: https://www.recofloor.org/subscribe-to-recofloor-enews/. For more information on the scheme, visit www.recofloor.org or contact Recofloor on 0161 355 7618 or at [email protected].

Tory Jamie Wallis Comes Out As First Openly Trans MP In Emotional Post
Jamie Wallis came out as the first openly trans MP in a heartfelt post shared on Twitter early on Wednesday morning.
Following a dinner with the parliamentary party on Tuesday, Wallis explained why they had lent on the Conservative Whips heavily since being elected to the Commons in 2019, but “not for the reasons you might think”.
They wrote: “I’m trans. Or to be more accurate, I want to be.
“I’ve been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and I’ve felt this way since I was a very young child.
“I had no intention of ever sharing this with you.
“I always imagined I would leave politics well before I ever said this out loud.”
It's time. https://t.co/cbt0tKQZuNpic.twitter.com/IUaCjm9PtE
— Jamie Wallis MP (@JamieWallisMP) March 30, 2022
The Conservative MP for Bridgend in Wales explained they were blackmailed in April 2020 when someone “outed me to my father” and sent photographs to other relatives, asking for £50,000 in exchange for silence.
Wallis said that this person was arrested, pleaded guilty and sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.
They then skipped to September last year, explaining: “I ‘hooked up’ with someone who I met online and when I chose to say ‘no’ on the basis that he wouldn’t wear a condom he chose to rape me.
“I have not been myself since this incident and I don’t think I will ever recover.
“It is not something you ever forget, and it is not something you ever move on from.
“Since then things have really taken a tumble. I am not ok.”
Wallis explained that they fled the scene after crashing their car on November 28 last year “because I was terrified”.
The statement was met with messages of support from MPs from all sides of the Commons.
Love to you today and always - here's to us celebrating your living life as your true self xxx
— Alicia Kearns MP for Rutland and Melton (@aliciakearns) March 30, 2022
💪💪💪💪
— Johnny Mercer (@JohnnyMercerUK) March 30, 2022
Incredibly brave and honest, Jamie. Your courage will help so many and I hope will show how much support there is. Solidarity and strength to you.
— Chris Elmore MP (@CPJElmore) March 30, 2022
Sending you love and solidarity from the other side of the Commons. This is hugely courageous of you to share.
— Wes Streeting MP (@wesstreeting) March 30, 2022
Sending loads of support, Jamie. I hope you’ll be overwhelmed by love for taking the plunge and revealing your truth.
— Layla Moran 🔶 (@LaylaMoran) March 30, 2022
Wallis made headlines after hitting a wooden post in a Welsh village, triggering a brief internet outage – no-one was injured in the crash and no other vehicles were involved.
Wallis was arrested after the crash and charged with failing to comply with the solid white line road markings. They had to pay a £146 fine, £34 victim surcharge, £90 in costs and had three points on their licence.
They added: “I have PTSD and I honestly have no idea what I was doing except I was overcome by an overwhelming sense of fear. I am sorry that it appears I ‘ran away’ but this isn’t how it happened in the moment.”
Wallis also expressed their gratitude for the support from their colleagues, and said it reminded them “how important it is to be yourself”.
They concluded: “I have never lived my truth and I’m not sure how. Perhaps it starts with telling everyone.”

Acne: Acne is one of the most common skin diseases. It causes various blemishes and pimples on the face, especially around the chicks. It clogs pores, and also it could cause bacteria.

Most of the time, it causes red, swollen, dry and itchy skin. The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis. This usually affects babies and children, and adults too.
Psoriasis: Psoriasis has its roots in the immune system. This causes skin cells to form too quickly. Then they generate patches on the surface of the skin, and these patches are called plaques. They are often thick and red and have silvery scales. They are very itchy and painful. Usually, they appear on the elbows, knees, legs, face and scalp. Sometimes they're on the bottom of the feet.

Ex-Muslims Dealing with Homelessness in UK – What to do?
Who should read this: Generally Ex-Muslims in UK who are already homeless or at risk of being so, although Ex-Muslims living in other parts of the world will find some information helpful.
Being threatened with homelessness in UK:
If you are an Ex-Muslim in UK who has just been threatened with homelessness as a result of confessing to your family or partner that you have left the Islamic faith, this is likely to be an instance of domestic violence. According to UK law, this could incorporate controlling and coercive behaviour if anyone is pressurising you to live a certain lifestyle against your will and punishing you by removing you from their house. If this is the case and you feel you are in immediate danger, leave the property immediately and call 999.
Being threatened with homelessness will be a difficult time of your life and you will often feel isolated and as if you are the only Ex-Muslim in this situation. However, you are not alone. Ex-Muslims dealing with homelessness is not a new phenomenon. Although resources available to help Ex-Muslims are not readily available or frequently heard of, you can be anonymous and engage with a growing community of Ex-Muslims on Reddit who can give you good advice.
Reddit --> A Boston Ex-Muslim threatened with homelessness - https://www.reddit.com/r/exmuslim/comments/6scdlm/im_gonna_go_homeless_on_the_streets_of_boston/
Reddit --> Another Ex-Muslim discussion on the risk of being homeless - https://www.reddit.com/r/exmuslim/comments/2j8fam/to_be_homeless/
If you came out to your family/parents as Ex-Muslim and facing constant criticism, certain aggressive behaviour and feel like you will soon be told to leave the property, you can start planning to take some steps to find emergency accommodation and prepare for any such crisis.
1) If you are disabled and require specific support – contact Disability Wales http://www.disabilitywales.org/social-model/tai-hygyrch/
a) Register yourself in the Accessible Housing Register (AHR). It can help identify your needs and match you with accommodation based on your suitability –
· Wales:
Bridgend Accessible Homes (hosted by Valleys to Coast) – Janet Jordan, 01656 762464
Cardiff Accessible homes (hosted by Cardiff Community Housing Association ) – project Co-ordinator Rob Baker
Newport South East Wales Accessible Homes (hosted by Charter Housing) – Andrea Fry, Co-ordinator
Choicehomes@pembrokeshire – Dylan Evans, Customer Services Manager
Pathways to Adapted Housing Rhondda Cynon Taf – hosted by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council Tel: 01443 493621,
ADAPT Swansea (hosted by Coastal Housing Group) – Swansea Housing
Torfaen – within Homeseeker
· England, and Scotland:

Disabled Persons Housing Service
London Accessible Housing Registers
Glasgow AHR www.gcil.org.uk
2) Write to your local MP. Explain with a concise and clear email that context of the situation you are facing and the support you need. If you have children, explain it to them as both you and your children will need legal assistance and possibly, protection. A member from your MP’s office will generally write back to you within 2 to 4 working weeks. It will also alert them to support other Ex-Muslims in your area who are at similar risk. Find your local MP here: http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/
3) The Women’s Aid has published a Survivor’s Handbook with useful tips and contact information. Read it, even if you do not identify as a woman.
4) If you have a trusted friend or relative’s house where you can take immediate shelter, keep their address private. Prepare a small bag containing few clothes, cash, medicine and copies of following items and leave it with them so that in case you are removed from your existing house without warning and your abusers lock your valuable possessions and then destroy them, you have a copy of them –
Your passport/immigration paper
Marriage/academic certificate
Driving license
Birth certificate
Any legal document where your ownership to properties/assets are stated
Document stating businesses/shares you own
Bank details
gold/precious jewelery (if you are married and they are your asset)
You can also scan these items and upload them on secured cloud folders such as Dropbox, One Drive, and Google Drive.
5) Find your local authority/council here - https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council. Contact them either by phone or in person. Importantly, get into your local council’s housing register - https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-council-housing
6) Find your local homeless advisor provided by charity Shelter, they will be able to give you more tailored information - http://england.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/advice_services_directory
If you are already homeless in UK:
1) Find a nightshelter – they provide temporary one-night accommodation, generally for young people aged 16-25. You can either get in touch with them via Shelter here - https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/homelessness/temporary_housing_if_youre_homeless/nightshelters or
Use the Homeless Link’s website – you can find nightshelters nearest to your postcode à http://www.homeless.org.uk/search-homelessness-services
2) Use Homeless Link’s website to find an emergency shelter - http://www.homeless.org.uk/homeless-england/search?search_api_views_fulltext=&field_homeless_link_member=All
3) If you have certain health conditions, such as speaking difficulties, asthma, migraine etc. and you are too ill and there is no one to help you, it is best you address your health concerns first. Find your local NHS Urgent Care Service - http://www.nhs.uk/service-search/Urgent-Care/LocationSearch/0. Pearson and Booktrust Announce 2012 Booktime Titles for Annual Free Books Programme
vimeo
(3BL Media) May 3, 2012 – Booktrust and Pearson today announce the new titles for Booktime, which will give two free books to every child starting school in England and Wales in the 2012-13 school year. This year’s books for children in England are The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit, published by Frederick Warne &Co., an imprint of Penguin Children’s, and Tim’s Din, from the Phonics Bug series by Pearson UK, part of Pearson’s education business. 4-5 year olds in Wales will receive The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit as well as a Welsh language title, to be announced this summer.
725,000 children aged 4-5 will receive a free book pack in their first year of primary school, each pack containing two books to keep. In total 1.45 million books will be given to reception-aged children through Booktime, which aims to inspire a lifelong love of reading by encouraging families to have fun reading together. Each free book pack is a timely reminder of the continuing importance of sharing stories with children even when they have started school.
This will be the first time the free books programme has delivered books to every 4-5 year old in Wales, after a successful Booktime pilot in Bridgend and Wrexham. Thanks to a partnership between Pearson, Booktrust and the Welsh Government, 35,000 children in Wales’ Foundation Phase will receive a free Booktime book bag in the 2012-13 school year.
The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit is a playful and funny retelling of Beatrix Potter’s original story The Tale of Peter Rabbit. It is a special anniversary edition to mark 110 years since Frederick Warne first published the original tale. Through Booktime, this lovely picture book will introduce a new generation of readers to the escapades of Britain’s most famous rabbit. Families all over England and Wales will be joining in with Peter Rabbit’s 110th birthday celebrations by sharing this very special story.
In England, Booktime packs will also contain a book for children to support them on their reading journey, from Pearson UK. Tim’s Din, written by Monica Hughes and illustrated by Bill Ledger,is a lively and entertaining story about the mischief that little monkeys can get up to when they’re bored. With simple rhyming text and expressive illustrations, Tim’s Din gives children the chance to try telling a fun and simple story themselves.
Peter Hughes, head of corporate responsibility at Pearson, said:
‘One of the greatest gifts that we can give the next generation is a passion for reading. Books open doors to new worlds as well as help explain the world in which we live. Good reading skills are the basic building block that is essential for all of us to learn and to progress through our lives. It is also never too early to inspire a passion for reading. We and Booktrust hope that the gift of the Booktime books will provide another way for families, teachers, librarians across England and now Wales as well as the Pearson Booktime volunteers to help hook the next generation of kids on reading.’
Viv Bird, Chief Executive of Booktrust, said:
‘Booktime is bringing two exciting books to over 700,000 homes this year, thanks to the partnership between Booktrust and Pearson. This year’s book pack for England combines the timeless appeal of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit with the modern, computer generated artwork of Tim’s Din – and we await the selection of the Welsh language title with great anticipation. We know that all families will find something to love in their two free books, and that they will enjoy lots of laughter and surprises as they share the stories over and over again.’
The inclusion of The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit in this year’s Booktime pack is a highlight of a year-long celebration of Peter Rabbit’s 110th anniversary. Other elements of the year include the September publication of the brand new 24th tale: The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit by Oscar-winning actress and screen writer Emma Thompson, the launch of an exciting new Peter Rabbit website and special anniversary publishing including the release of all 23 Original Tales in coloured editions. In addition, ‘Happy Birthday Peter Rabbit’ events will be taking place throughout the year including Peter Rabbit appearances at Hay, Edinburgh, Bath and Cheltenham Literature Festivals. A brand new Peter Rabbit animation is also scheduled for 2012/2013.
Francesca Dow, Managing Director, Penguin Children’s said:
‘Encouraging a lifelong love of reading is a fundamental part of what we do at Penguin Children’s and it is so exciting that through Booktime, we are able to reach so many children and enable them and their families to share in the joy of reading. Beatrix Potter was a wonderful storyteller – so good that 110 years later, her naughty little rabbit is still with us, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit can be enjoyed by a new generation of readers through this very special retelling. I hope these books will inspire many hours of mischievous fun and laughter for children across England and Wales.’
Booktime will be supported by a range of downloads and games on the website: www.booktime.org.uk

Girl’s 200-mile trips for leukaemia treatment
Image copyright Family photo
Image caption Elin Rowlands was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2013
A family whose daughter had to make 200-mile round trips for cancer treatment are calling for more help with the costs of travel.
Elin Rowlands, 13, from Anglesey, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2013 and had to travel to Liverpool’s Alder Hey hospital to get specialist treatment.
Elin’s mother said it cost them between £35 and £40 for each return trip.
The Welsh Government said some families are eligible to claim for travel costs if they meet certain criteria.
There is a specialist cancer unit for young people in Cardiff but there is no service for those further north.
Alison Rowlands gave up work to care for her daughter Elin and said she had to depend on friends for financial help when their car broke down.
Mrs Rowlands told Newyddion 9: “At the start it was very scary… you don’t think about the journey right, it’s get your daughter there, get her better.
“It’s then as the treatment goes on, that it’s ‘oh my goodness, I’ve got to go there a lot’.
“We were spending roughly £35 to £40 each trip to go there and come back and most of them were day trips, and there’s a lot of them.
“We stayed there quite a lot in the beginning, but then we had to go back about four times a week.
Image caption Elin, pictured with her mother, suffered a relapse last year
“You had to look at the diary constantly, what time are we going? When do we need to set off? Have we got petrol in the car?
“My husband drove most of the time, but because of his job he couldn’t do it all the time.
“I wouldn’t like to imagine how much I’ve spent on the fuel in that amount of time.
“You worry enough about your daughter going through this horrible treatment without having to worry where the money’s going to come to put petrol in the car.”

Mrs Rowlands said the local community pulled together and collected “a really good amount of money” they were able to spend on fuel.
“If the government did decide to help out with families, that would be amazing – until you go through something like this, you have no idea whatsoever.”
Elin relapsed in January 2018 and needed a bone marrow transplant, but had to be transferred to a unit in Manchester.
She still travels to Liverpool and Manchester for tests, but no longer needs treatment.

Richard Pugh, from the Wales Cancer Alliance, is also backing the calls for more support: “The cost ramifications are huge because those specialist services aren’t that local.
“You’ve got to travel. Unless you’re in Cardiff and those services are right on your doorstep.”
The charity CLIC Sargent estimated Elin’s family would spend on average £600 a month on travel costs.
The charity want the Welsh Government to create a £250,000 annual travel fund, to help families pay for travel costs.
Mr Pugh said: “What we’d like to see is a travel fund for young people affected by cancer so they don’t have that financial burden.”
Image caption Richard Pugh said “in an ideal world” there would be multiple treatment units across the country
The Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff is the only specialist unit for young people with cancer in Wales.
Ashley Bassett, 23, from Pencoed, Bridgend, was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was studying for his GCSEs and visited the unit.
“This unit is very important. It’s a place I can come and relax. It’s a nice environment. There’s a pool table, TV and games,” he said.
“There’s opportunities to try and be as normal as you can in hospital, because hospitals aren’t place to be sometimes, but this unit makes it much more bearable.
“It’s unfortunate that people live too far away to come here for treatment.”
Cancer survival improvements slow down
Breast cancer taboo ‘can cause isolation’
Fast cancer checks urged for north Wales
Mr Pugh said “in an ideal world” there would be multiple units across Wales.
“Unfortunately, our workforce isn’t in the condition it should be to do that,” he said.
Image caption Ashley Bassett said the support unit he used has a “nice environment”
“We’re at a real cusp of some massive issues with our workforce, not just for children but across the board.
“So we need to make sure that we get the support for patients in the right location, at the right time. At this time, it does mean travelling.”
The Welsh Government said some families can be eligible to claim for travel costs if they meet certain criteria, such as claiming benefits.
A spokesperson said: “Families can be eligible to claim help for travel costs from the NHS if their child has to go to hospital for NHS treatment.
“We are committed to the provision of excellent care for children and young people but recognise that this may require families to travel outside of their health board area.
“While we appreciate the impact this has on families, it is also important to ensure that children and young people can receive expert care for what are often complex conditions from a sustainable service.”

Ford: 1,000 Bridgend jobs could be lost by 2021
Image copyright PA
Image caption The job losses in Bridgend would be phased over the next two years
About 1,000 jobs are under threat at a Ford plant in south Wales.
The car giant is looking to shake up its European operations, with their site in Bridgend set to be the hardest hit over the next two years.
If plans go ahead, the Bridgend jobs – more than half of the site’s workforce – will go in two phases by 2021, as part of 1,150 losses across the UK.
Ford declined to confirm the figures and said it was currently consulting with unions.
It said these talks were ahead of it implementing a “comprehensive transformation strategy”.
The Bridgend site produces engines for Ford motor vehicles and employs about 1,700 people in total.

The Unite union called it “grim news” and said shop stewards had been given a briefing.
“It is a devastating blow for our members and their families, as well as having grave implications for the Welsh economy and the supply chain,” said officer Des Quinn.
“Unite is fully committed to opposing any compulsory redundancies and campaigning strongly for Bridgend to have a viable future.”
He said representatives would consult with members over the coming days.

He added: “There are a number of factors behind this grim news – the main ones being challenging market conditions for carmakers generally, a lack of a coherent industrial strategy from the UK government and the uncertainty created by Brexit.
“Over the last two decades the UK car industry has experienced a renaissance of which we can all be proud of.
“The challenge for government, the carmakers and the unions in the near future is to fight very hard to maintain the environment that made that success possible.”
The 1,000 losses would come alongside 150 in Ford’s transport operations, which would affect lorry drivers.
On Thursday, the company said it would be speeding up plans to cut structural costs and thousands of jobs would go across Europe.
“We are taking decisive action to transform the Ford business in Europe,” said group vice president for Europe, Steven Armstrong.
“We will invest in the vehicles, services, segments and markets that best support a long-term sustainably profitable business, creating value for all our stakeholders and delivering emotive vehicles to our customers.”
The announcement from Ford came on the same day as Jaguar Land Rover said it was axing 4,500 jobs and Honda said it was halting production for six days after Brexit.
